What is Public Speaking?

The process of speaking to a group of people in a

structured, deliberate manner intended to inform,

influence, or entertain the listeners.

Purpose range from simply transmitting information,

to motivating people to act, to simply telling a story.

Good speakers need to change the emotions of their

listeners, not just inform them.

Difference between Public Speaking &Presentation

* Public speaking skills are important but in corporate

environment you need to extend them to include the extras,

and that becomes Presentation Skills *

1. Informative Speech:

- when a person gives a speech before an

audience to impart information on a

particular topic or issue

- Well research on the topic

- Should include all the facts but you cannot take sideon a particular speech

- Success of informative speech depend on how muchthe audience could understand from the speech

2. Persuasive Speech

- When a person tried to persuade or convince a groupof people

- Aim to influence and changethe opinion of theaudience

- Difficult because facing a group of people who mayhave totally different views

- REMEMBER: not there to wage a war and should talkwithout hurting feelings



Tips to Overcome Nervousness

1. Know the room.Be familiar with the place in which you will speak.Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using themicrophone and any visual aids.

2. Know the audience.Greet some of the audience as they arrive.It's easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group ofstrangers.

3. Know your material.Practice your speech and revise it if necessary.If you're not familiar with your material or are uncomfortablewith it, your nervousness will increase.

4. Relax.Ease tension by doing exercises.

5. Visualize yourself giving your speech.

Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear, and assured.When you visualize yourself as successful, you will besuccessful.

6. Realize that people want you to succeed.

They don't want you to fail.Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative,and entertaining.

They are on your side!




7. Don't apologize.If you mention your nervousness or apologize for anyproblems you think you have with your speech, you may becalling the audience's attention to something they hadn'tnoticed.

8. Concentrate on the messageFocus your attention away from your own anxieties, andoutwardly towards your message and your audience.Your nervousness will dissipate.

9. Gain experience.Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effectivespeaking.




10. Turn nervousness into positive energy.Harness your nervous energy and transform it into vitality andenthusiasm.
