To exhibit at the county and State Fair, 4-H members showing beef, dairy, dairy beef, dairy feeder calf, goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep and swine (so, basically everything ex-cept horses, dogs, cats and Llama/Alpaca) must be certified through “Youth for the Quality Care of Animals”. The goals of having 4-H members complete the YQCA training session include:

Youth will be more prepared to be ambassadors for animal agriculture in their role as youth livestock exhibitors.

Animals from youth livestock programs are treated with utmost care.

4-H members are contributing to a safe, wholesome food supply. Sign up & Options

YQCA Workshop dates will be added as an event at yqca.org. You will be required to log-in at yqca.org using your 4-H Online email and password to sign up for the workshop of your choice from a list of workshops and pay online.

In person workshops require online registration of $3, and online workshops require online registration of $12. Either way, you need to go online to pay. There are no free coupons this year. If you do not wish to use your credit card for the $3 registration, stop by the Extension Office for a $3 ticket so that you can register with the ticket number for the workshop option.

New this year is a multiple online certification available for youth who are age 12 and age 15 by January 1. You can take a multiple year “test out”. You will still pay $12.00 for each year you test out of. You only pay if you pass the test. You only have one (1) opportunity to take the test. Cost for age 12 is $36.00 (3 years). Cost for age 15 is $48.00 (4 years). Test out is ONLY available online. This would save you time to do the yearly workshop or the yearly online test.

Please understand that the fee is paid to YQCA for the curriculum and development. These fees were not set by the Indiana 4-H program, and 4-H does not receive any of these funds.

If you are unable to take the training in Wells County and do not wish to take the training online, you may register and attend a workshop at any of the locations listed. Dates for train-ings outside of the county will be released as they become available. Remember to identify your animals in the 4-H Online system. You will need to include a digital photo. If you have questions, contact your leaders.

Are you new to 4-H? If so, you will need to check out this information on Premise ID.

4-H Livestock mem-bers with cattle, swine, sheep and goats need to have a Premise ID.

This number is assigned to a farm location almost like an address. If your farm does not have an ID you can get the number from the Indiana Board of Animal Health at 317-544-2381 or by email at www.in.gov/boah

If you house your animals at another loca-tion, check with the property owner for the Premise ID number. The numbers are only needed for cattle, swine, sheep & goats.

Your Premise ID will be needed for: * To obtain a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) which is like a prescription feed. * Your 4-H Online Animal Enrollment * If you exhibit at the State Fair.

Swine Exhibitors for State Fair

Animal Project News

State Fair 4-H swine exhibitors are once again required to collect hair (DNA) samples from their animals and turn them into the Extension Office by May 15th in the special envelope that will be provided. Part of this process is that you must also record the animal’s RFID tag on the envelope. The Extension Office now has the envelopes and tags for you to pick up. Online entry for the State Fair is open and swine are due June 1st.

If you are planning to take an animal to Lengerich’s or Manley’s for processing after the 4-H Fair, please give them a call to schedule a time. With all the area fairs happening at approximately the same time, they need to plan accordingly.

Wells County is using ear notches and RFID Tag #’s as the form of identifying swine. Both are needed. RFID tags are available at the County Exten-sion Office. Each member can receive up to six (6) tags. Each tag after that are $3 each. You will need the tag number when you enter your animals into the 4-H Online system. If you choose to assign a tag to an animal and tag it later, make sure you keep a record so that the correct tag is used for that animal. These will need to match at fair weigh in.

The Swine Boosters / Committee will meet Monday, April 29, 7 PM at the Wells County Community Center, 4-H Park. Fair plans for the BBQ supper will be discussed along with the June Workshop and Weigh Day. All 4-H Swine families are invited.

Swine Boosters / Committee

Cattle Scales

All Beef Cattle, Dairy Beef and Dairy Feeder Steers that will be exhibited at the Indiana State Fair must turn in a DNA hair sample by April 1 (beef and dairy beef market steers) and May 15 (commercial heifers, registered heifers, and dairy feeder steers). Special envelopes are available at the Exten-sion Office. The envelope with the DNA hair sample must be turned into the county Exten-sion Office, envelope number recorded and forwarded to the State 4-H Office. Remember, this is only if you plan to exhibit at the State Fair.

The 4-H Association has ordered the new scale and it should arrive in May or June. Thank you to all of the clubs, families, and businesses that donated. Donations are still being accepted and they can be dropped off at the Extension Office.
