8 4-H NEWS October - November 2012

Both 4-H’ers and fair-goers enjoyed numerous activities at this year’s Wyoming County Fair

Thank you to all youth, volunteer leaders and parents who helped with exhibit registration, serve as teen evaluators,

junior superintendents, and judges. Thank you to those who also helped to sort and count exhibit entry tags, decorate and set up displays, and assisted with the various activities which took place throughout the week in the Youth Building.

We also appreciated the generosity of those individuals, community organizations, and businesses who donated their time, prizes, product or made a monetary contribution to support 4-H activities that took place in (or outside) the Youth Building! The success of our program would not be possibly without you all!!

Our judges were busy this year as 1382 exhibits were

judged and awarded ribbons at this year’s Wyoming County Fair. In addition, 119 4-H Cloverbud exhibits were on display and awarded participation ribbons. Several displays and activities in the Youth Building reflected this year’s fair theme, “One Great County – One Great Fair”. Receiving first place blue for their 4-H club educational exhibit was the A - C Citizens 4-H Club. The A – C Citizens 4-H Club will receive an additional $50 cash award, donated by the James Wright family in memory of Joyce Wright, former 4-H homemaking leader. Other placings included second blue for the Tri-County Kids 4-H Club and third blue for the Shooting Sports 4-H Club. Throughout the week, fifty-seven 4-H’ers repeated their public presentations and thirty-five 4-H’ers mannequin modeled in the Youth Building.

Many youth took part in the educational and fun activities held at this year’s Wyoming County Fair. The 4-H Team Jeopardy Contest was held Wednesday afternoon, August 15th in the Youth Building at the fair. Eight teams, comprised of three 4-H’ers and one adult, competed by answering questions focusing on animal science (dairy, beef, sheep, swine, etc.), plant science, family & consumer science (foods and nutrition, clothing and textiles, consumer education), Wyoming County/New York State trivia and general 4-H trivia.

The 4-H’ers and adult comprising the winning team and runners-up were presented with either a 4-H t-shirt, cinch bag, and water bottle. All participants received ribbons and were treated to free ice cream cones donated by the Pike Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary, Pike Masons, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and the Pike Youth Recreation. The competition was tough, but the following were victorious in the end!

In addition, 119 4-H Cloverbud exhibits were on display and awarded participation ribbons.

Wyoming County Teens Attend 4-H Career Exploration Conference Eleven Wyoming County 4-H teens attended this year’s 4-H Career Exploration Conference 2012 at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, June 26th – 28th.

Our 4-H youth joined over 500 other teens and adult chaperones from across the state for this three-day adventure on the Cornell campus. The fun-filled three days were a chance to learn about potential careers, check out college life, and develop leadership skills through one of several exciting programs. Career Explorations offers a program, called Focus for Teens, focused on the areas of interest for teens in 10-12 grade, and a less intense program, called University U, for teens entering 8 and 9th grade. Wyoming County teens participated

in programs ranging from Professional Dairy Careers, Natural Resources (Forestry, Wildlife & Fish), and Biomedical Engineering to Food Science: DNA Fingerprinting and Veterinary Science Discovery.

Free time activities allowed our 4-H youth to meet teens from across the state and renew friendships.

Representing Wyoming County 4-H were: Emelyn Bell, Pavilion; Grace Book, Bliss; Nicole Buresch, Alden; Cory Crowell, Arcade; Chelsey Downs, Attica; Megan George, Strykersville; Nicholas George, Strykersville; Adam Kirsch, Strykersville; Ryan Kirsch, Strykersville; Jamie Klein, Alden; and Liz Taylor, Alexander. Chaperoning the group were Roxanne Dueppengiesser and Vincent Kirsch. Registration fees for our 4-H’ers were paid for by funds from the 4-H Leader’s Association.

If you weighed in a meat animal project for the 2012 Wyoming County Fair, you need to submit a complete project record sheet, regardless of the degree of completion on the project to be eligible for the 2013 project year. Exhibitors will receive 20 bonus points for the 2013 project year for records received in the 4-H office on time. October 15th is a MONDAY this year! Please plan accordingly to have your records postmarked by that date or physically handed into the office by 4:30pm. Please do not send records by FAX! (they are hard to read and lots of times pages are missing) (*Even if you did not show and sell your animal you need to submit a project record to the 4-H office. If no record is turned in, you will not be allowed to participate in the 2013 meat animal program.) Forms can be found online at: http://counties.cce.cornell.edu/wyoming/4h/forms/index.htm or call the 4-H office.
