We are pleased to introduce two new pastoral staff members and an integral volunteer. We hope you also introduce yourselves as parishioners to them and help us welcome them aboard. We are very excited and happy to have Michael, Manon, and Pam on our pastoral team.

Michael McGrath, Business Manager

I am a native-born "Pittsburgher." I grew up in Mount Washington and attended St. Mary of the Mount Elementary and High Schools from first through 12th grades. I received a BS degree from Duquesne Uni-versity and a MBA from Waynesburg University. I have worked in various churches throughout the Dio-cese (in one capacity or another) for most of my life since I was a teenager - a LONG time ago! I have served in the business manager ministry for the past eight years. I have been certified by the Diocese as a business manager and commissioned by Bishop Zubik as a Lay Ecclesial Minister.

Music has always been an avocation of mine. I love playing the piano and organ and singing. I have been blessed in my life to play the organ at St. Paul Cathedral for 17 years, and to sing with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh for 8 years, just to name a few opportunities I've had over the years.

I am a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan. All other life-activities become secondary during playoffs season.

Vatican II serves as the foundation for my "philosophy" and "vision" of church and parish leadership today. Every single one of us has a vital role in bringing God's kingdom to life. Liturgy is the most important thing we do as Catholics. If we provide excellent liturgies and thereby bring Jesus Christ to as many people as possible, then all other aspects of parish-life, spiritual AND temporal, will fall into place. I am very excited for the opportunity to work with Father Joe and all the members of the Sacred Heart/St. Raph-ael grouping to build our own little section of God's kingdom in the east side of Pittsburgh! Working together, it is my hope and prayer that we can build the BEST new parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh!

Manon Proulx, Secretary

I am Canadian, born in Montreal and I come from a very Catholic family. As a child, I remember my parents telling me stories about the faith of Saint Brother André and his devotion to Saint Joseph, which increased my faith and brought me to serve the Church in a music band for more than 10 years. I played classical, acoustic and bass guitars. I have a Bachelor degree in Business Administration and a College Diploma in Financial Account-ing. In 1986, my life changed when I met the Focolare Movement, an Ecclesial Movement in the Roman Catholic Movement of which I am a consecrated member and live in a Focolare community. I received my formation in the Spirituality of Unity of the Focolare Movement in a two year course at our International Center in Loppiano, Italy. I spent another two years in Switzerland. I moved back to Toronto in 1999, where I lived until 2015, before coming to USA. I am tri-lingual (English, French and Italian) and am active within the Focolare Movement in arranging and organ-izing retreats and engage actively in youth ministry. For the past 3 years, I was fortunate enough to be working as Administrative Assistant at the Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican Em-bassy in Washington DC for the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Christophe Pierre. These years were very important in my life and I cherish this experience because it widened my horizon in the understanding and vision of the Church, its beauty, universality and its place in today’s world. As I mentioned above, I am a musician and one of my hobbies is to play guitar or listen to music. I often organize musical concerts and work as choir director within the Focolare Movement. I also love playing all kind of sports and of course, enjoy watching a baseball or a hockey game. For me, working on a pastoral team is an opportunity to experience something new. One of the benefits of forming a team is that a team brings more resources to the table in order to reach more goals. I believe in this proverb: “Alone we are faster but together we go further!” I look forward to having the opportunity of getting to know many of you, and to foster unity and build something new together on the foundation of the richness and diversity which already exist.

Pam Matia, Safe Environment Coordinator

Pam has embraced the spirit of On Mission for the Church Alive! and offered to use her vast experience and knowledge of being a former Safe Environment Coordinator to serve our parish grouping. This is extremely generous of Pam, considering this important role and the fact that Pam has a full-time job outside the parish. Pam is well known among Saint Raphael parishioners, and she is looking forward to assisting both Saint Raphael and Sacred Heart in this volunteer position. Pam can be reached at the Safe Environ-ment Coordinator email address: [email protected].

INTRODUCING NEW MEMBERS OF OUR PASTORAL TEAM:

Page 4: 4 AUGUST 2019 THE PARISHES OF SACRED HEART & SAINT … · 04.08.2019  · cherish this experience because it widened my horizon in the understanding and vision of the Church, its

We are ready to begin the interviews for a new full-time Director of Music Ministries for the Saint Raphael – Sacred Heart Grouping. This person obviously needs to be a qualified musician. Both Saint Raphael and Sacred Heart have ex-cellent organs and can be proud of the liturgical music programs already in existence. Many people in both parishes are knowledgeable about sacred music and liturgy. They all recognize that Sacred Heart has one of the most historic Skinner Organs in the region. “Every rank of pipes, so far in place, has been carefully voiced, scaled, and regulated that when combined they produce one single tone of great clarity, brilliance and transparency, all of statuesque beauty and in per-fect balance” (A Sermon in Sculptured Stone and Jeweled Glass, 67). The following steps outline the process for hiring the Director of Music Ministries: Formation of a Search Committee

This committee evaluates parish needs; Searches out prospective candidates; Assesses the candidates’ applications; Selects the best qualified candidate.

Drafting a Job Description Membership of the Search Committee The pastor selects the committee members with the advice and guidance of other staff personnel:

Kathy Kegarise: Sacred Heart choir member and very involved in the church and school at Sacred Heart Darlene Kiniry: current organist at St. Raphael; has worked there for many years and has a good understand-

ing of the St. Raphael music program Donald Fellows: Director of Music and organist at St. Paul’s cathedral; has vast knowledge of sacred music

and liturgy, as well as experience in logistics and hiring process for the position Matthew Radican: Current organist and choirmaster of Sacred Heart Parish, has been part of the music pro-

gram as an organist and choir member since 2017; has a good understanding and appreciation of the histori-cal significance and contribution that Sacred Heart has had to sacred music

Michael McGrath: new business manager, ex officio, and experience as organist and choir member Establishing Time Frames

The position was announced and advertised on June 27, 2019. Candidates were given until July 31, 2019 to apply. Applications were reviewed by Father Mele with the assistance of Father Jim Chepponis, Diocesan Director of Music, Mr. Kevin Maurer, President of the Pittsburgh Chapter of Pastoral Musicians, Mr. Don Fellows, Saint Paul Cathedral Director of Music Ministries and in consultation with Matthew Radican, Interim Organist and Choirmaster at Sacred Heart, and Darlene Kiniry, Music Director of Saint Raphael Parish.

Evaluating the Applications The committee examines all the usual factors considered in a hiring process. Confirm that each applicant meets the Safe Environment background requirements. The most important consideration is whether or not the musician has the specific training, experience, and vision necessary to lead the music program in the grouping. Send letters to those applicants we no longer wish to consider.

Interviewing and Auditioning the Candidates Prepare for the interview. Interviews will be conducted the week of August 12th. The Interview is conducted by the Search Committee. The Audition

Our search committee agreed that we would narrow down the field to two finalists. They will be invited to demonstrate their skills in the areas of hymn and service playing, accompanying a choral anthem, performing on the Sacred Heart Skinner Organ. They will also be invited to direct the Saint Raphael and Sacred Heart choir members that are available at the time of the audition.

Selecting the Musician Truly meets the needs of the grouping Has the support of the Administrator and pastoral staff. Has the support of the majority of the committee, if the decision is not unanimous

Determine preliminary salary and benefits range (Final figures are determined by a number of factors related to qualifications of the candidate selected for the position).

SAINT ROCCO STATUE PROCESSION THROUGH MORNINGSIDE WILL BE ATTENDED BY HUNDREDS

Some might consider it merely a touch of the Old World and that in itself is a reason for especially young families to attend this ancient tradition. This year marks the Fortieth Anniversary of a custom that started centuries ago in Italy and many other countries in Europe and the Americas. Organized by Rocco Didomenico and a Committee, this joyful tradi-tion begins with Mass in honor of Saint Rocco at Saint Raphael Church. Many of the former citizens that came from Maierato in the region of Calabria, Italy will return to Morningside from many plac-es to walk in the procession that follows the Mass. Rocco and his family have a sincere devotion to Saint Rocco for personal reasons but also because they want everyone in our area to learn the story of this wonderful Saint and his powerful intercession before the Lord. Next Sunday afternoon the Mass in honor of Saint Rocco will be cel-

ebrated at 4:00 PM in Saint Raphael Church. The procession follows immediately after Mass. The Ohio Val-ley Band along with bagpipe music will lead the way through the Morningside neighborhood. Dignitaries from the city and neighborhood will honor the occasion by their presence. The Clergy Team of Sacred Heart and Saint Raphael will walk closely to the statue and lead the prayers and bless the sick along the way. Hun-dreds of faithful people will participate in this joyful and festive procession. Families with little children and friends on the sidewalks, porches, in the yards and driveways of their homes will greet the procession along the way adding to the religious festivity. It is truly a gala event while at the same time maintaining the sanctity of the occasion. The spiritual journey through the streets works to rediscover the “profound sense of the sa-cred” through the solemn liturgy of the Church but also through the affectionate humanity of family and their love for neighbors. The purpose of the procession outdoors and through the streets of Morningside is also to bring the message of hope that Saint Rocco always brings to the sick and especially to those who lose hope from worries and being afraid. Saint Rocco, who served and loved the Lord Jesus, is hope not only for a broken people but also a bro-ken community when times are troubled. There is brokenness in too many neighborhoods and even in some families today. Sometimes and in some places, we see it everywhere. If we dwell on it too long our hearts grow heavy, discouragement takes root and we find ourselves feeling defeated. Then what? Where do we seek comfort to know no matter the brokenness all will be okay and it will get better? We all need a friend sometime is our life. So here we are, answering the call of Christ, We turn to one of his dear friends with him in heaven. We bring Saint Rocco’s statue to show our neighbors we all need healing but there is help. We need the comfort of this heavenly friend who is with the Lord and can intercede for us. Father Mele will preach in the homily of the Mass how Saint Rocco per-formed miracles while he lived on earth and why it can still happen today if we understand what the commun-ion of the saints really means. God always desires to intervene in the lives of his people. Come to the Mass in honor of Saint Rocco. See for yourself the human warmth in the eyes of this great saint that the sculptor captured in the statue. Allow yourself and your family to touch a little of the best of the Old World. At the same time, prepare yourself for everything else that happens during the very beautiful, moving and holy celebration of hope. You will find out just how much our entire world needs something as simple as a statue carried through all the streets on earth. Prepare to be touched by the mystical presence of someone from heaven with us bringing us the incredible, transforming grace of hope. We can all aspire to that hope. You are already friends of Jesus Christ and you can be friends with everyone on earth if you want to be. Yes, with every single person in this universe. If we all want this for the world!

BACKYARDS SO FAR The backyard gatherings have been a wonderful way for people in our grouping to get to know one another on a social level. At the same time, it was beautiful for parishioners to share spontaneous prayer together and es-pecially to discuss the Word of God in a group. We hope to create 60 small group communities that will meet regularly throughout our new parish by 2022.

The gatherings offered Father Joe & Father John many creative ideas of moving forward. All these sugges-tions will be given further consideration by the pastoral staff and the new On Mission Pastoral Council.

DON’T MISS THE LAST BACKYARD EVENT OF THE SUMMER!

This Backyard begins at 6:30pm and goes until about 8:00pm. Nancy and Hugh will provide light refresh-ments. Don’t forget your lawn chair and meet us in the backyard!

WHO IS SAINT ROCCO?

Perhaps you have never heard about Saint Rocco. St. Rocco was born of noble parentage about 1340 A.D. in Montpellier, France. At birth it was noted that he had a red cross-shaped birthmark on the left side of his chest. As a young child, St. Rocco showed great devotion to God and the Blessed mother. At an early age, his parents died leaving him an orphan under the care of his uncle, the Duke of Montpellier. Soon after, St. Rocco distributed his wealth among the poor and took a vow of poverty. St. Rocco dressed in the clothes of a pilgrim and departed for Rome. Along the way, he stopped at Aquapendente, which was stricken by the plague, and devoted himself to the plague victims, curing them with prayer and the sign of the cross. Legend has it that everywhere he visited, the terrible scourge disappeared before his miraculous power. He visited Mantua, Modena, Parma, and other cities, all with the same results. During his travels, he too contracted the plague which was evident by an open sore on his leg. Rocco was banished from the city and took refuge in a cave. There he slept on leaves and drank water from a small stream. Miraculously a dog that refused to eat, faithfully brought him bread as a means of sustenance. The dog used to leave a nearby castle and the lord of this castle having a curious nature followed this dog into the woods and discovered Rocco. The nobleman had pity on Rocco and brought him to his castle where Rocco was cured. St. Rocco traveled through northern Italy for two or three more years before returning to his birthplace in France. So weak and sick from suffering, the townspeople did not recognize him and he was thrown into jail as a spy without any proof. He was kept in prison for five years. On August 16, 1378, a guard entered his cell and found St. Rocco near death. The dungeon was illuminated with a blue light radiating from his body. Upon hearing this, the Governor demanded to know St. Rocco's identity. St. Rocco faintly replied, I am your nephew Rocco. Only one thing could prove that, so he had him disrobed and the red cross-like mark was visible on the left side of his chest. The Governor and the townspeople present in the cell then believed. A voice from paradise was heard announcing that St. Rocco's soul had merited immortal glory in Heaven. Even after his death, St. Rocco performed many miracles. St. Rocco is remembered on August 16th of each year.

Please read the information provided below about the process for determining membership on the On Mission Pastoral Council. I encourage all existing members to seriously consider staying on board if they believe the Holy Spirit is guiding them to do so. Once they let me know their intentions, we will open up the process to other leaders in the parish that might be willing to advise me and help with the envisioning work that will need to be done together. I ask everyone to read the material supplied in this bulletin and for all of us to pray for our grouping and its spiritual and pastoral success.

We will be having two informational after-Mass “coffee and conversation” sessions where anyone who has ques-tions or a need for further information or clarity about the process for determining members for the On Mission Pastoral Council is welcome to attend. The dates and location for these sessions are as follows:

Sunday, August 4th following 9:00am Mass – St Raphael Multipurpose Room Sunday, August 11th following 9:00am Mass – Sacred Heart Auditorium

I want everyone to have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have at this very important time in our grouping.

IT’S REALLY ALL ABOUT THIS!

1. Creating a compelling vision

2. Designing enabling parish structures to help make that vision a reality

3. Supplying the leaders with the appropriate competencies to sustain the vision

4. Relying on the presence and goodness of Christ to provide everything else we need to do His will for our

grouping
