SECTOR SOUTHERN PENINSULAR Since 1993, the Ministry for Agriculture, Food and the Environment’s Nature Trails Program aims to restore for- mer transport infrastructures, such as railway tracks, cattle trails and traditional routes, for public use and enjoyment. These routes take us to the countryside to discover the bio- diversity and beauty of our precious natural heritage, and discover the villages, sights, traditions and people that are part of the unique cultural landscape of our country. We invite you to visit them and offer you the keys to en- joy the trip. In this brochure you will find a brief description of the Segura Nature Trail and the map for the journey, along with recommendations to make the most of this ex- perience. We only ask one thing of you: do not forget to leave everything as you found it. The conservation of these pathways is also your responsibility. NATURE TRAIL SEGURA The Segura Nature Trail uses the Jaén stretch of the am- bitious railroad project that was intended to connect the towns of Utiel (Valencia) and Úbeda (Jaén). The Sierra de Alcaraz Nature Trail runs along its railroad. The trail crosses the municipal districts of Arroyo del Ojanco, Segura de la Sierra, Puente de Génave, La Puerta de Segura, Génave and Villarrodrigo, as well as the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and las Villas Natural Park, the largest protected area in Spain. TELPHONES OF INTEREST: Arroyo del Ojanco City Council: 0034 953 42 00 02 Génave City Council: 0034 953 40 30 81 Puente de Génave City Council: 0034 953 43 50 02 NIPO: DL: Arroyo del Ojanco to province boundary [ Jaén] OLIVE GROVES LANDSCAPE UNDER THE E PROTECTION OF SIERRA DE SEGURA A 1. The trail begins at an olive grove, next to a farmhouse, around km 217 of the N-322 road. It runs along almost entirely along the old railroad system, using many of the infrastructure that was built for the train. The first of these infrastructures that the trail encounters is the viaduct over the Guadalaviar river, which is also the starting point of an almost continuous ascent until the end of this route. Soon the traveller will meet the first of many passages under paths and roads, just before a stretch shared with vehicles. Not too further on, the trail reaches a rest area located at the top of one of tho- se passages over the railroad platform. 2. The itinerary is not very tough, almost following a straight route, with a main landscape consisting of olive groves. The trail passes over brooks or under tunnels, leaving a rest area on the side which takes advantage of the sha- de provided by a great pine tree, until it reaches another stretch that is shared. 3. Right after crossing a bridge over a road, travellers must be especially cautious, because the trail leaves the dirt path to continue, on the right, on a road that allows crossing the N-322 road. Once on the other side, the trail leaves the road and makes a detour on the left that meets the dirt road again and which reaches the Puente de Génave station. 4. The trail continues taking a long but smooth curve to the left in order to come closer to the town of Bonache, plunging into the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park, and changing the landscape when traversing a pine grove for a couple of kilometres. This curve changes direction suddenly as it passes by a dam in the Viña brook and the pine grove is abandoned soon after the trail comes to a new rest area. 5. After crossing the street, the trail continues alongsi- de the train platform among greenhouses, houses and small gardens, reaching a bike lane that overlaps with the rural trail, leading to the way of Granadillos. From here, the views include the coast of Grajuela, the point of Guapo on the background and the marina, together with the traditional fishing weirs. 6. After a straight low-gradient but continuous ascent, the trail reaches the Génave station. From here, you can access the town of Génave, where the Tercia tower (declared Site of Cultural Interest) or the church of the Inmaculada Concepción. Further on, given that the views appear once you cross a couple of brooks and pass by a long straight, you can observe, on the left side of the trail and over a hillock, the La Laguna tower, which is part of the town of Génave, and also declared Site of Cultural Interest. 7. After passing under a path that leaves the ruins of a farmhouse on one side, the trail plunges into an oak pasture, which means the end of the olive grove as the omnipresent landscape, which will be replaced near the trail by broom fields where some oaks are splashed on the first stretch, and then by croplands once the trail reaches the Villarrodrigo station. 8. Next to a rest area, the detour towards the town of Villarrodrigo (somehow far from the trail) is the last place where you can access easily this nature trail, via a secondary road connecting the N-322 road with the aforementioned town. The route still continues among croplands until it reaches the provincial limit, where it is connected with the Sierra de Alcaraz Nature Trail. NATURE TRAIL SEGURA The trail goes into a pine forest for a couple of kilometers Olive groves, and Segura mountain range in the background The trail uses old railway infrastructures SECTOR SOUTHERN PENINSULAR Guide to the Nature Trails of Spain SIERRAS DE CAZORLA, SEGURA AND LAS VI- LLAS NATURAL PARK The Segura Nature Trail runs entirely within the Sierra de Segura County, which is 70% of the surface of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park.
