STANDING OUT

Cover: Year 10 London Trip

Of course this week also saw our Year 11 students receiving the results of their pre-public (also known as “mock”) examinations. They have been eager to get the results of the exams that were completed recently. However, just like the real thing, they have had to wait for them to be marked and results collated.

Just like the real event the results were then “made public” at 09:00 on Thursday with students rushing to see how well they had done!

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Sara Davey Academy Principal

What a start to the Winter Semester we have had this week!

Once again our newsletter is crammed with stories and pictures of our life here at Mounts Bay, including great learning both on campus and further afield showing a huge range of activities and events off site.

It’s all about you...

Looking forward...

To continue with the theme of success we are inviting all Year 11 students and their parent/carers into the Academy next week

to participate in some fun and informative workshops that will help them to face the next few months in the countdown to their final public examinations.

To help with this we have also launched a newsletter, just for Year 11 students, which will be published periodically and contain

lots of additional help and information to assist them in their final few months with us. Click on the link to view: www.mountsbay.org/

Then in the evening it was an absolute pleasure to welcome back our Class of 2017 for our Annual Academy Awards Evening. The ceremony is a celebration of our students’ achievements and the chance for us to catch up on just what they have been up to since leaving us in the summer. It was wonderful to see them all again and I hope that they will all sign up to our MBA Alumni programme so that we can keep abreast of their progress in the future.

BE YOUR BEST

Da Vinci Journal

Last month Amy Jackson was fortunate enough to visit New York and New York State.  To help her remember this amazing trip she kept a journal of what she did and the highlights of her days.  She included receipts, pamphlets and tickets for the various places that she visited and stayed.  The journal is filled with so many interesting things that she did including visiting the Statue of Liberty and its museum, the Bronx Zoo and Niagara Falls.  At the NYSCI, which is a science museum in New York, she was particularly interested in an interactive digital world where you could divert a waterfall to grow plants and flowers. The message that she took from this was that it takes a lot of effort to sustain an eco-system.

She also reflected on why the United States is sometimes described as the ‘melting pot’ and has no official language and nearly every known religion is practised.  She also researched the climate of New York state and how the economy has grown and been sustained.

DA VINCI PROGRAMME

Her journal demonstrates a great deal of motivation and interest in the world around her.  She has produced a very detailed document that others can read and learn from and be inspired by, and that is why it is worthy of being awarded a Da Vinci.

EXCELLENCE REWARD

Last night the Academy welcomed back some familiar faces for our annual MBA Awards evening. The evening celebrates the success of last year’s Year 11 students and as usual was extremely well attended by both former students and their parents.

There were awards for Achievement and Endeavour in all subjects as well as the presentation of GCSE certificates and some special awards. We then moved on to our three most coveted awards.

The Pre-Public Examinations have taken place over a two week period  in the gym, in the same conditions as the real exam series. The students had been preparing for the exams

since early October and the staff have been working hard to get the papers marked in time for the results day.

On Thursday, the students gathered outside the front entrance, as they would do in August. At 09:00 the waiting was over and the students collected their results in reception from staff. The results overall were really encouraging and following the excitement, students were encouraged to Review, Research and Refine. Students will now get individual feedback in all subjects in the form of either Question Level Analysis (QLA) or Smith Proformas which will identify the next steps for students.

Well done Year 11on your effort, attitude and behaviour. The final Pre-Public Examinations take place in late January/early February.

BE CURIOUS

On Wednesday 15th November 2017, four Year 9 students and two members of staff left for the Comenius Project exchange trip to Germany.  We left  Bristol airport and flew to Munich before catching the train to Augsburg. We were picked up from the train station by our host families and straight into the German culture. The host families were welcoming and kind, they taught us the true Barvarian ways!

On the first day we went to our host school, Maria Theresia Gymnasium to take part in a graffiti workshop.  All of the exchange schools took part in this; Spain, Holland, Germany and us from the UK.  We had to create a piece of work that we thought summarised our school.  This was great fun.

In the following days, we also attended lessons, and a conference as well as sight-seeing.  On the Sunday we visited the Dachau Concentration Camp.  This was really thought provoking and it opened our eyes to what went on in these camps in the past.

Overall the exchange trip was brilliant! We learnt so much about the culture and the history of Augsburg and Germany.

After a fantastic first day visiting the Central London Mosque, the Natural History Museum and seeing the Lion King, the students were very excited to experience day two’s activities.

Firstly, we went to the London Dungeons where the students experienced the history of London in an interactive way. We could all tell the students and staff were enjoying it by all the screaming and shrieking, not naming any names Miss Wearne!

After a thrilling time in the Dungeons we then headed for the London Eye Experience and we couldn't have had better weather. The skies were clear and we could see miles all over London, a perfect opportunity to see the culture of London from above.

The students on the trip were exceptionally well behaved. They were a credit to the Academy.

Year 10 Healthy Relationships

BE CURIOUS

CLEAROn the last day of Project Week Year 10 finished a scheme about healthy relationships led by the expert team from CLEAR. In Friday’s session the focus was on what

behaviours make positive relationships, with students working in groups to explore the consequences of negative and abusive relationships and how to respond. Through these sessions the importance of finding, forging and experiencing sustained positive relationships has been made real. Students built positive attitudes towards relationships by praising one another’s qualities - the kind thoughts were shared and brought a smile to many of their faces.

BROOKDuring this session an expert speaker from Brook in Cornwall talked to students about sexual health and sexually

transmitted infections.

SepsisMrs Astley described what Sepsis is, how it is caused and how to recognise the symptoms. She spoke about her personal

experience and the effect it has had on her and her family. A very personal look at an important health issue.

It is about providing students with life skills and experiences, earning their way to an amazing opportunity and learning real life geography

working with people less fortunate in a far off remote part of the world. One example of the entrepreneurship our students are showing includes this newspaper clipping showing Elsey Kirby’s fundraising efforts. Great job Elsey! Well done team!

The Call is an intriguing book with a dystopian theme. It's perfect for people who have enjoyed reading Game of Thrones or The Hunger Games as it's a fictional fantasy world set in Ireland.

It has a complex nature but once you get your head around some of the components of the story line, it becomes exciting and draws you in to the unique story line that Peadar O'Guilin has expertly created.

It follows the main character Nessa through her adventure in Ireland and the Grey Land, which is infested with Sídhie, pronounced ‘shee’ in Ireland and meaning fairy woman. Without warning, Nessa and her friends will each wake in the Grey Land, alone and hunted, with a one in ten chance of returning alive.

We highly recommend this book as both of us have thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

On Tuesday Year 10 GCSE Drama students took part in the Schools’ Shakespeare Festival at the Regal Theatre in Redruth. They had been working on their thirty minute version of ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ for a number of weeks and on the evening of Tuesday

21st they finally got to perform in front of an audience. The day started with the students travelling up to Redruth for a technical and dress rehearsal. The students were really receptive to the experience and followed directions given by the Shakespeare Festival staff.

In the evening the MBA students were on after the interval, and despite being quite nervous, they all pulled together and the piece really flowed with well paced entrances and exits. The piece was well received from the audience and the Year 10s took at least three bows as the applause was effusive. All the schools received feedback from the festival organisers and the comments given to MBA demonstrated their strength in

delivery of dialogue and their stage presence, which showed that their hard work had really paid off. The festival co-ordinators were complimentary to all the students and thought it was amazing to have a Year 10 student running the lighting, two students sorting costumes and another student running and setting up all the props required on stage.

A group of 14 young people from MBA opted to build their cultural capital and expand their horizons by experiencing the world renowned Kneehigh Theatre perform The Tin Drum at a packed Hall for Cornwall on Wednesday night. It was an evening of stunning

visual and musical experimentation and there were some performances of the highest quality from the talented actors. The play incorporated some intriguing contemporary political insights about power and how tolerant and stable communities of different ethnic groups can be destroyed by ignorant and close minded people who abuse power. There were dark moments that left some students feeling challenged as well as some hugely enthusiastic reviews of the performance from some experienced MBA theatre goers who thought it was brilliant and amazing.

“The play started off really well. Some really cool bits, like the way they showed windows smashing. Too long, but it was a good night out.” - Huck New

“This was my first experience of watching British theatre. The opening was really good and I liked the way they used the puppet. But it went on too long. There was lots of music, half I enjoyed, half not.” - Alois Neuling (German exchange student)

“Well thought out play, acting well rehearsed and slick, but the music was sloppy at times. I would have liked more excitement in the plot.” - Woody New

Any play that can produce such a range of responses must be celebrated. Well done Kneehigh and thanks to Shelley for keeping us all

at Mounts Bay in touch with professional theatre performances of quality.

Deputy Head Girl, Emma Eddy, travelled up to London this week to perform at the Royal Albert Hall with Cornwall Youth Orchestra, as part of the Music For Youth School Proms. Emma played first violin for the performance which featured ‘Night on a Bare Mountain’ by Mussorgsky and ‘Shine the Light Bright’ as the finale piece.

They were invited up to London after an epic performance at the National Music For Youth Festival in Birmingham earlier in the year, and were part of a really varied line up that included everything from DnB to traditional Indian music! It was the fourth time Emma has graced the Royal Albert Hall stage and we’re all really proud of her.

On Tuesday afternoon, MBA's award winning choirs were the main event at a concert to mark 125 years of St Thomas' Church in Heamoor. The concert, which was led by MBA's vocal and choir leader Mr Ben Hoadley, was organised in partnership with the

church to celebrate an important piece of our local community. The concert began with our ever expanding Boys Choir, who were followed by the first of two pieces by our HPI Choir. The audience was then treated to a stunning solo piano performance by Senara Rendell, a beautiful duet performance of When We Were Young by Ebony Maddock and Jess Lee, and another song from Senara, this time also on vocals. The show was rounded out with a barnstorming Daydream Believer from the Boys Choir, and the HPI Choir performed their Best of Festival award winning program from the Camborne Festival to finish. It was a lovely afternoon, warmly received by a very appreciative and respectful audience. It's surely the first of more collaborations with St Thomas' Church, and a huge congratulations to Ben Hoadley for putting it together.

The High Performance Programme is approaching the end of their first block of fitness and conditioning. The students this week were working on their power and explosives power. We were developing this through broad jumps, bounding and sprinting.

Although not all of these athletes run in their sports it will still benefit them to utilise the power for their sports. The students will have their mentor meetings and target setting in the next few weeks before we retest their fitness and conditioning.

At the weekend four MBA students took part in the 60th Annual English Schools Swimming Association Gala at the London Aquatic Centre at the Olympic Park in Stratford.

After a long journey and a good rest they entered the Olympic Park first thing in the morning to maximise their opportunity to see the facilities. All the girls entered their lunch time warm up with a mixture of excitement and anticipation as the surroundings were mind blowing, the music loud and the calibre of their fellow swimmers astounding. The hundreds of swimmers included the finest in the country in secondary education - juniors, intermediate, senior and Para categories  (age 11-16).  Charlotte Bell (Team Captain) represented Team MBA by parading with all the other teams around the pool parameter - cheered on by her team mates.

Their race (4 x 50m IM) at almost 5pm, heat 3 lane 9 was gripping. They entered the completion in 29th place and desperately wanted to PB and gain a higher place. First swimmer was Mel Roberts, backstroke, who was at the front of the pack until the 50th metre where Isabella Davy took over with the strong 50m breaststroke, holding their position in their heat. Amber Sanders then took the 3rd leg with a great 50m butterfly culminating in Molly Haines storming the final length with the 50m freestyle.  All four girls had impressive swims and pulled off a 2 sec team PB as well as individual PBs. They also improved their national position by three places.

The experience as a whole, and their race specifically, was what all those years of early

mornings, hard work and commitment has culminated in, and the girls should feel extremely proud of themselves for not only holding their own but excelling on the national stage.
