Music is busting out everywhere. Times a wasting…let’s roll! Impromptu music at the Ice House… every day! As the season heats up around here, so does the live music scene. The impromptu gatherings of local musicians around the Tarpon Ice House continue to blow my mind. Billed as Denny and the Jets last week, locals Jack Gant, Denny Larkin and Robbie Owens showed up out of nowhere and put on one heck of a show. I can see these boys catching tread. And, when it looks like nobody else is booked at the Ice House, Mr. Mo usually steps up to the plate at the last minute. He did so last week with the amazing drummer, Chris Vanderkohn and guitarist, Dan McLeod, in tow and got a huge crowd going. You never know who’s going to show up and play at the last minute. This Tuesday was a hoot. This really sweet girl, Tiffany, who lives across the street on the roof of Castaways, came over late in the day and said she had these guys from the Hill Country who wanted to play with her and would it be all right…yeah, sure. They called themselves the Lost Boys. Tiffany showed up, The Lost Boys didn’t but it didn’t matter. Tiffany put on one hell of a show by herself. I’m seeing a singer-songwriter open mic in the making here. And the Open Jam over there every Sunday has really started to explode. It’s always a lot of fun and gets bigger and bigger every week. There’s no egos and anyone and everyone is invited to participate. They have a PA set up with a bunch of amps and instruments ready to use. It’s kind of exciting to see who’s name makes it to the chalk board out front late in the afternoon. Really, you should check it out. It’s really spontaneous. Back Porch news… The surprise performance of the week goes to Charlie Monague who played the Back Porch last Saturday. I wasn’t familiar with him but this guy has got some chops. He’s got a strong band and a really dynamic vocal delivery. His songs were hard driving and high energy…he really had a strong stage presence. I liked him. In the coming weeks, the Porch will host shows in May by Cruise Control, Jon Wolfe, Ruben V, The Dust Devils, Davin James, W.C. Clark, Gary P. Nunn and the always amazing Larry Joe Taylor. The great Joe Ely played the House of Rock last Sunday… Well, I finally made it off the island last Sunday and went into town to see the great Joe Ely at the House of Rock. He’s sounding as fabulous as ever. To my surprise, there were only about 50 people in attendance but Joe played like it was to 5000. He had a new guy with him…a lead guitarist from Chicago named Robby Gjersoe. I’ve seen some of the best guitarist ever accompany Ely through the years (Rick Hulett, Jessie Taylor, David Grissom, etc) and thought this gentleman certainly held his own. His passages were clean and warm and never cluttered up the mix. I thought he was a nice addition to Ely’s show. Joe played his songbook and even opened up the set list for requests. It was a wonderful, intimate show with the old master from Lubbock. I went back stage after the performance and talked to Joe for a while. He was asking me if there were any good gigs in Port A…hmmm. I can think of a few.
