A 16 Island Moon November 29, 2012
By Ronnie Narmour
Saints and sinners all agree…Ready or not, it’s countdown to Christmas.
Though I’m not a huge fan of Christmas and all the commercial hype that comes with it, I am a fan of the warm feelings of fellowship and generosity that people share during these few short weeks. I think it’s too bad that most people wait until the eleventh hour of the year to show this compassion towards their fellow man. Maybe I’m getting soft in my old age but I’m ready for the whole world to lighten up. Maybe that’s why I cling to music so passionately. I even went to church for the first time in 41 years (except for a few weddings here and there). Don’t get me wrong, I still have the same complicated spiritual views I’ve always had, but it was really nice listening to music in such a serene, giving environment. My musician friend, Carol Elliott, invited me to watch some very talented young folks perform at Trinity by the Sea Episcopal Church and I thought, “Why not?” And it was splendid… very peaceful and uncomplicated. The weekly ensemble consists
of high school senior, Jenna Ward on angelic vocals and flute, and two brothers (both juniors at PAHS), Ty Morris on vocals and guitar and Jason Morris on djembe and cajon (hand drum). Elliott accompanied them on guitar and harmony vocals. And, though I wasn’t real sure what was going on with all the standing up and sitting down and kneeling and such, I did feel a sense of comfort. It’s amazing where music can take you. It even got me to church.
Moon Music CD cutoff Jan. 1st…OK guys, as of January 1st, we won’t be
taking anymore applications for our Moon Music CD. Just to refresh your memory, the Island Moon Newspaper is in the process of producing a compilation recording of Coastal Bend musicians with original songs in a variety of genres. The response has been more than encouraging and, though it’s a slow moving process, we hope to make our decisions by early January as to who will make the final cut. Either drop your recording off at the Moon office on North Padre or come to the Sunday jam at the Tarpon Ice House in Port A, and I’ll record you on my video camera. My email address is at the top of this page, so feel free to contact me if you have questions or want to get involved.
There’s a new kid in town…There’s a new
kid on the block and his name is Stevie Start (North Padre Island, TX). This summer Stevie contacted me with interest in being on our Moon Music CD. I met him at the Back Porch but shortly afterwards he had to head back to his
native New York to deal with his dad’s illness. He got back recently and showed up at the Ice House jam and that’s when I saw what he was all about. We happened to have a full band set up (Three Way Street) and a good dozen other players waiting in line to play, but Stevie patiently waited his turn and I’m glad he stayed. He has a strong vocal delivery and an aggressive guitar style which moves in a variety of directions. Most impressive were the originals sprinkled in with the Steve Earl, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan covers. Turns out Stevie has owned and operated several recording studios around NYC, as well as fronted a popular cover band, The Boomchasers, which opened for Marshall Crenshaw and Loudon Wainwright III, at such noteworthy venues as CBGB’s and The Bitter End. We dug him so much we brought him back the following weekend to run a jam of his own on a Saturday night and it turned out to be killer. He’s one well rounded musician, playing guitar, bass, keys, and drums. Keep an ear tuned for this guy… Stevie Start. I’m sure he’ll be making waves around here soon.
DO NOT MISS LISTThis weekend
Wanda Jackson, Folk Family Revival…Tomorrow, Friday
the 30th, the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, will perform at the House of Rock. Wanda Jackson began playing guitar when she was just a child. She decided to pursue
a music career after her father took her to see Tex Williams, Spade Cooley and Bob Wills. At the age
of 12, Jackson won a local talent show which got her a 15-minute daily show on KLPR. While hosting her own radio show, Jackson was asked to perform several songs with the Brazos Valley Boys, including the hit, “You Can’t Have My Love.” Jackson signed with Decca shortly thereafter. In 1956, Jackson signed with Capital Records. Her alternating of country and rockabilly style landed Jackson two Grammy Nominations and in 2009, Wanda was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The amazing Folk Family Revival (Houston, TX) will open the show along with Johnny Fritz. Btw, I saw Folk Family Revival a couple of months ago at the HoR and was blown away. This is definitely a DO NOT MISS show!
Ray Wylie Hubbard…
On Saturday, Dec. 1st, the Third Coast Theater will present one of the original Oak Cliff boys, Ray Wylie Hubbard (Wimberley, TX). Probably best known for Up Against the Wall Redneck Mothers, Hubbard has put out 16 recordings since 1971 which includes such jewels as Snake Farm, Screw You We’re from Texas and Choctaw Bingo. His body of
work is staggering; his introspective songs are sometimes hilarious, sometimes painful, but always insightful. I once drove by myself from San Antonio to Gainesville, Florida with only one CD in the truck, Delirium Tremolos (2005 Philo), and listened to it for 16 hours straight. I think the man is a songwriting genius.
Jul & the Chrome Wheels, Todd Dorn…
Also on Saturday, the 1st, Jul and the Chrome Wheels (Austin, TX) will be at the Tarpon Ice House. They’re a high energy blend of soulful rockin’ blues. Todd Dorn (San Antonio, TX) will play a solo show at Shorty’s. Todd is an island fave who has a laid back country groove that goes down as easy as a mango margarita.
On the horizon…Down the road, look for Slaid Cleaves (Austin,
TX) to play the Third Coast on December 8th. Also on the 8th, Shelly King will be at Doctor Rockits. On the 9th, Jason Boland, Cody Canada and Chris Knight will be at Brewster Street. On December 13th, there is an undeniable DO NOT MISS show at Brewster Street with Los Lonely Boys and Alejandro Escovedo. Shame on you if you miss that one! On the 14th, Buster Jiggs and Neal Edwards will play the House of Rock. Brian Keane (Austin, TX) of Band of Heathens will play the Surf Club on the 15th. I saw him at the Third Coast with Bruce Robison a few weeks ago and was very impressed. On December 20th, Brewster Street will have a dynamite Christmas show with heavyweights Robert Earl Keen plus
Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines. Also during Christmas if you happen to be in Austin, Joe Ely will be at the Saxon Pub on December 21-22. Also on the 21st, the white hot rockin’ funk band, Vallejo (Austin, TX) will be at the House of Rock and Ruben V (San Antonio, TX) will be at Doctor Rockits. Be safe out there!
And that’s the truth!
