Can you feel it? We can just about close the book on winter and start thinking about tuning up those lawn mowers. Spring break will rear its ugly head in a week or two…the good news is my beloved Back Porch will soon be open and the live music scene will really start popping again. But, what I’ve enjoyed most about this winter on the island has been the open jams. I commend both Jerod Clark and Ricke Burnett for their efforts at the Flats and Tarpon Ice House, respectively, with building a couple of successful events. The number of musicians showing up to play each week has consistently grown and the caliber of talent gets better and better each week. Good job guys! Another cool thing about March is the annual South By Southwest music conference in Austin. Hundreds of aspiring bands, as well as music professionals of every kind, flock to Austin from absolutely everywhere in the world to network and party. I haven’t been to SXSW in a while but I known it’s grown to be Austin’s largest single attraction and is attracting huge talent. This year Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band will actually play. But right now, time’s a wasting…let’s roll! Ray T injured in motorcycle accident Ray Tijerina, bandleader of Ray T and the City Crew (Aransas Pass, TX), was in a bad motorcycle accident on February 9 around 11:30 pm. The accident occurred on Hyway 361 between Ingleside and Aransas Pass and involved a pickup truck who stopped in the road causing Tijerina to T-bone into him at 55 mph. According to his rhythm guitar player and cousin, Juan Jimenez, Tijerina suffered a broken leg in two places (snapping both his fibula and tibula), several fractured ribs, lacerations to his lungs and liver and a ruptured spleen. He had a female passenger with him who is also in ICU at Spohn Memorial Hospital with similar injuries. The driver of the truck was arrested for DWI. Tijerina does not have medical insurance and a bank account has been set up for donations at Wells Fargo Bank under Estevan Reynaldo Tijerina (DOB: 03-01- 1973). Big John and Lynda Coward, owners of the Flat’s Lounge in Port Aransas, tell me they will be having a benefit for Ray soon. I’ll let you know when. Say a little prayer for brother Ray, he’s got a rough road ahead of him. Dicky Neely and Guy LeRoux Dicky Neely (Flour Bluff, TX) and Guy LeRoux (Corpus Christi, TX) played the Port Aransas Community Theater on February 20, as part of the Port A Parks and Rec’s Winter Sounds series. Neely is a longtime island fixture who plays a tasty blues harmonica and sings. He was accompanied on guitar by LeRoux. The audience at the PACT was 99% Winter Texans and half dozen locals (who all sat in the front row). The duo ran through a set of blues standards by the likes of Jimmy Reed, Sonny Boy Williamson. Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Little Walter, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Paul Butterfield, John Mayall and Muddy Waters… that’s the good stuff, people. I thought both artists played exceptionally clean with soulful, uncluttered passages. LeRoux is quite good and has a nice finger picking style. He also played a few originals and even a Cole Porter song. DO NOT MISS LIST Bruce Robison Bruce Robison (Austin, TX) will perform at the Third Coast Theater in Port A on March 3. Singer-songwriter, Robison is the brother of Charlie Robison and hails from Bandera, Texas. He has released nine studio recordings since 1996 and had songs recorded by the Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and George Strait. His latest album, From the Top, was produced by Rodney Crowell. He has been married to singer-songwriter, Kelly Willis, since in 1996 and often performs with her as a duo. Michael O’Connor Michael O’Connor (Brenham, TX) will play the House of Rock on March 8. Originally from Corpus Christi, O’Connor is often considered one of the top sidemen on the Texas curcuit. His guitar accompaniments for such artists as Slaid Cleaves, Adam Carroll and Susan Gibson are in high demand. O’Connor happily spent most of the last decade devoting more time to sideman gigs than on his solo career. But with the release of Devil Stole the Moon, the 45-year-old songwriter is gearing up to take center stage. “I’ll still be doing some selective sideman gigs, but I’m going to be concentrating more on doing my own thing,” he says, “It’s just time for a change.” Jim Beal, of the San Antonio Express-News, says of O’Connor, “...a collection of songs that take unvarnished looks at not-so-beautiful losers who populate the margins: the has-beens, the never-will-bes. With the line ‘a bar tab twice as long as Billy Gibbons’ beard,’ even losers win.” Ruben V Ruben V (San Antonio, TX) will play the Back Porch on Saturday, March 10. Yes folks, it’s finally here. The Back Porch opens on the 8 th and our old friend, Ruben Vela gets the honor of playing the first show of the season. I’ve known V since the early 90’s and have seen him play dozens of times. He is truly a master guitarist with a large array of song styles that include blues, rock, Latin and Americana. V has a vivacious energy about him that pulls you in. Every show is different; he has a vast catalog of songs to pull from. They may play a familiar song but change the tempo or instruments. The Ruben V shows become enlivened jams inciting the audience into a musical frenzy. He keeps the audience entertained and coming back for more. I like the way Ruben puts it, “My guitar might change shape and size; but, those six strings will always be a part of who I am and who I have grown up to be.” The Kydells The Kydells will play the Tarpon Ice House on March 16, 17 and 18. This is a band who lives all over the country. Holly Hendricks on vocals and percussion lives in Montana, Lee Baker on guitar and vocals lives in Austin, Milton Gore on vocals, guitar and mandolin and Dave Lora on upright bass live in North Carolina. The band plays a kind of hybrid of country, blues, Texas roadhouse and Appalachian blue grass with amazing harmonies. They first got together in North Carolina in 1995 and only get back together every so often. They recorded their first album in 1998 and just finished their second recently. This will definitely be a DO NOT MISS show in the same vein as the Shoemaker Brothers. And that’s the truth!
