Calder Style
The Calder Portico is simple to erect and will certainlyprovide the classical finishing touch to any new orexisting property.
Incorporating solid traditional Tuscan columns, corniceand architrave, the Calder Portico requires no additionalreinforcement or insitu concrete, thereby making it adesirable feature that can now be added cost effectivelyto any development.

Portico Construction Guidefor most Types excluding Calder Style
Coping set in 1:2:9 cement, lime, sandmortar, recessed and pointed up withmatching mortar colour. Each coping with 2no. 6mm S/S pins site drilled and resinanchored.
Cornice set as coping but allow 14days for r.c. beam to mature before drilling.
Sequence of erection for main columns and beams.
1. Set out column at desired distance apart andaway from building wall, excavate forappropriate sized footings, set up 20mm dia Lshaped bar with threaded end at top to finish150mm above top of circular column baseunit and central to the core.
2. Set square section pedestal units parallel tohouse wall and central to core position in1:2:9 mortar, 6mm joints, line core withpolystyrene and hand fill with 25 gradeconcrete with small gravel aggregate and allowto set, checking plumb and level of unit. Fixsplice connector.
3. Set column base unit in 6mm 1:2:9 mortar, check centre, and level, line core withpolystyrene, hand fill with 25 grade concreteand leave to set.
4. Line main column with polystyrene, hoist intoposition set in 1:2:9 mortar joint 6mm thickand plumb up checking centres across the top.Compensate for taper of column with 27mmblock below neck to check plumb. Prop and
edge column on 4 sides, insert main 20mmdia column bar and screw tight, hand packbottom 300mm of column with 25 gradeconcrete, check plumb, leave 24 hrs to set.
5. Fill concrete column cores to within 200mmof top and allow to set. Bed column capital in1:2:9 mortar with 6mm joint onto top ofcolumn, check for square with 6mm jointonto top of column, check for square withbuilding and level top. Ensure bar spliceconnector is fitted prior to bedding on thecapital. Fit short angle shaped 20mm dia steelbar, tighten up and fix bar splice to main beamend. Hand pack concrete to top of capital, leave 24 hrs.
6. Scaffold around columns, fully acro prop andsupport 250x50 timber soffit support to frontand side beams, level 6mm above capital tops.Full width of J beam MUST be supported.Hoist and set side beams, then front beamsinto place, forming soft joint between top ofcapital and underside of J beam, check leveland square, install 20mm dia main beam bars, min 1000 overlap, and combined corner /side beam bars, min 900 return into frontbeam. Hoist precast soffit units and set on1:2:9 mortar (ensure slots in wall min 300tall) leave to set, ensure all joints filled and endof beam stopped. Fill beam with 25 gradeconcrete, leave support 14 days.

All Elegant Stone products comply with thespecification for cast stone as defined by BS: 1217:1997.
Mean Dry Density: Approximately 2250 kg/m3
Compressive strength: The average crushingstrength of three cubes as tested in accordancewith BS1881 part 116 shall be no less than35N/mm2 with no individual unit less than28N/mm2.
Water absorption: Components shall not exceed 1.0mg/mm2 for CapillaryAbsorption Test (CAT) as defined byBS1217:1997.
Dimensional tolerances:Up to 600mm ± 2601 to 1000mm ± 31001 to 2500mm ± 42501 to 4000mm ± 5over 4000mm ± 6

49
1. Pallets should be stored on firm level ground.
2. Never stack pallets on top of each other.
3. Ensure scaffolding poles, timber and all other objects do not come into contact with pallets inallocated storage area.
4. Always ensure when moving pallets that forks are extended as wide as possible to ensure base ofpallet does not deflect, thereby cracking lower units.
5. Lifting components directly with chains or slings is both dangerous and can lead to damage ofthe units.
6. When using grabs, always ensure they grip the pallet and not the stone.
7. Individual units should have suitable protection between faces to reduce the possible damage.
8. Components must be supported by timber bearers which should be positioned to preventpoint loading.
9. When removing polythene shrink-wrapping, do not burst open or tear off as this may damageedges and corners of components. Carefully cut open polythene using a sharp knife, taking carenot to damage units within.
10. Never drag or slide units across each other.
11. Components should be handled and stored in the plane to which they are designed tobe installed.
12. Once in place, components should be protected from damage or contamination fromfollowing trades, by covering with timber or heavy gauge polythene sheeting.

Site Practice and HandlingEfflorescenceEfflorescence or “lime bloom” is a temporary, naturally occurringphenomenon that can affect cast stone as well a other cement based products. Alightening of the surface may occur which may be more prevalent in dampconditions. Efflorescence in no way effects the structural integrity of the caststone and in most cases will disappear in time with normal weathering.
Repairs and CleaningCast stone products should be handled with care and protected at all times tominimise damage, subsequent remedial work and cleaning. However, repairscan be undertaken using a suitable mix supplied direct from our factory.Depending on the nature and extent of the damage incurred, repairs may becarried out by site operatives.
