    JOB DESCRIPTION

    JOB TITLE: Physiotherapy Assistant - orthopaedics

    GRADE: Band 2

    DEPARTMENT: In Patient Therapy Department

    DIVISION: Clinical Support

    SITE/BASE: Watford /St. Albans Hospitals

    REPORTS TO: THERAPY TEAM LEAD

    ACCOUNTABLE TO: ACUTE THERAPY SERVICES MANAGER

    KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

    Physiotherapists, Patients, Administration Team, Doctors, Nursing staff, /occupationalTherapists

    JOB SUMMARY:

    To work under the supervision of qualified physiotherapy staff, to undertake avariety of tasks (clinical and non-clinical), to support the delivery ofphysiotherapy to patients.

    To work in a ward based setting, assisting patients to complete theirtreatment, teaching and correcting when necessary, individually and in groups,and to prepare the environment and equipment. To maintain stock andequipment including reordering.

    Non-clinical duties include data inputting and housekeeping which aid theefficient running of the department.

    To actively participate in seven day working including weekend workingreflecting the needs of the service.

    The main duties and responsibilities :

    Clinical

    1. To work under the day to day supervision and direction of qualifiedphysiotherapy staff implementing specific tasks for an individual or group ofpatients, as part of their treatment and rehabilitation programmes.

    This will include:

    Assisting the patients with functional activities of daily living, includingwalking, standing up from chair or bed, transferring.

    Teach and supervise simple exercise programmes for a patientcaseload

    Teach the use of walking aids

    Basic breathing exercises with patients as part of set programmes andgive advice when needed during physical activity.

    Basic clinical advice and reassurance.

    2. To assist qualified staff in the treatment of heavily dependent patients, throughrehabilitation handling skills or using hoists, patient handling equipment, etc.

    3. To demonstrate developed coordination and patient handling andrehabilitation skills through clinical teaching and observation /competencies, tobe acquired over a period of clinical working with physiotherapists.

    4. To take delegated responsibility from the physiotherapists for managing acaseload of patients, and organise own time effectively and efficiently. Usetwo-way communication systems in order to gain information required from the

    physiotherapists to enable a safe treatment is carried out.

    5. To carry out a specified treatment or programme, making independentjudgements regarding consent, understanding, pain or information from otherMDT members, which require decisions to be made with or without discussionwith the physiotherapist before continuing treatment.

    6. To work at all times within set clinical guidelines and procedures comprisinggood physiotherapy practice, and be guided by senior colleagues in doing this.

    7. Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informedconsent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patientswho lack capacity to consent to treatment.

    8. To be involved with the MDT treatment plans for individual patients andthrough communication with physiotherapists, assist in discharge planning.

    9. To assess and manage clinical risk within own patient caseload.

    10. To be responsible for maintaining up-to-date, accurate and comprehensivepatient treatment records in line with professional and Trust standards of

    practice.

    11. To be aware at all times of the needs of patients during illness or disability andto promote and encourage independence and restoration of function. Toidentify changes in objective markers analysing observations andmeasurements.

    12. To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures.

    1. To fully communicate with the physiotherapists at all times feeding backinformation regarding patient treatment programmes, condition and dispositioneg compliance. Use two-way communication systems in order to gaininformation required from the physiotherapists to enable a safe treatment iscarried out.

    2. Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicateeffectively with patients during treatment programmes, and to help patients

    feel supported in self-management of their condition. Some communication ofpatient progress may be discussed with family members and carers whereappropriate.

    3. The communication skills of persuasion, motivation, explanation and gaininginformed consent will be used with a wide variety of patients. Issues mayinclude bereavement, grieving, loss of independence, and must be dealt withempathetically and confidentially. Barriers to effective communication willregularly be evident including: cognitive impairment, expressive and receptivecommunication difficulties, embarrassment, anxiety, pain, fear andvisual/hearing impairment. When a barrier is identified strategies to overcome

    it will be put into place.

    4. To use communication skills to address language and cultural diversity issues.

    5. To communicate patient related information effectively, which may includesome complexity, to ensure collaborative working with the Multi DisciplinaryTeam (MDT) members helping to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinatedmultidisciplinary service.

    6. To achieve and maintain a competent level of skill using informationtechnology relevant to all areas of practice.

    Staff Management / Training

    1. To be actively involved in the Trusts Performance Development Programmeand be responsible for complying with your agreed personal developmentprogrammes to meet standard of knowledge and competencies..

    2. To maintain own continuous professional development (CPD) by keeping up-to-date with core competencies and progressing ideas of treatment and giveexamples of them within your work. To maintain a portfolio which

    demonstrates personal development and shows evidence of reflectivepractice.

    3. To attend the Trusts mandatory training.

    4. To receive regular clinical supervision.

    5. To attend the in-service training programme, for general inpatients and forassistants. May be required to present information at assistant trainingsessions where courses have been attended as part of communicating newskills and knowledge.

    6. To attend physiotherapy staff meetings as appropriate.

    Non Clinical and Domestic Duties

    1. To prepare the treatment area and tidying up after use, including the disposalof soiled linen and the cleaning of equipment. To include both inpatient areasand outpatient departments.

    2. To maintain stock and equipment including reordering.

    3. To undertake as directed the collection of data for use in service audit anddata entry. Carry out this data entry using IT skills.
