The evening raises money to support Craig Hospital’s Programs of Excellence, including therapeutic recreation, music therapy, return-to-work programs, the PEAK adaptive wellness center, the award-winning Nurse Advice Line and more. These innovative programs are vital to our patients’ success, yet not reimbursed by insurance companies. They are reliant on the support of generous donors like you. Proceeds of the PUSH paddle auction support the Patient Assistance fund, which helps patients with minimal income or inadequate insurance to travel with family members to and from Craig, purchase equipment like wheelchairs and shower chairs, remodel homes for accessibility, train caregivers, pay mortgages, and meet other urgent needs. PUSH funds also support Craig’s cutting-edge spinal cord and traumatic brain injury research. Today, more than 30,000 patients from around the world are leading better lives because of the medical care, rehabilitation services and research of Craig Hospital. Thank you for your support of the programs that change the lives of our patients and their families. Mike Fordyce President and CEO

DAVID AND KRISTY, A PUSH SUCCESS STORYWhen David Larkin was told his insurance company required a co-pay of several thousands of dollars for his new power wheelchair, he was worried. He hadn’t been working since he had been diagnosed with a staph infection that caused spinal epidural abscesses and loss of motor function. His wife was retired, and his Social Security benefits hadn’t kicked in yet.

“I didn’t know where the money would come from or how we’d do it,” says Larkin.

Larkin’s wife Kristy spoke with their Craig inpatient Clinical Care Manager, who arranged for the funds to be paid out of the PUSH-supported Patient Assistance Fund. The fund also provided Larkin with a shower chair and a refurbished donated manual wheelchair, allowing him to discharge to home.

“Craig made sure that I had the equipment I needed, it was such a big weight off our shoulders,” he says.

With the assistance of Craig’s Community Reintegration department and the Driving Program, he was able to return to his job with the federal government. The Larkins are now able to give back to the same Craig programs that helped them.

2016 AWARD HONOREES

INSPIRATION AWARD

MIKE UTLEY

The Inspiration Award recognizes an individual who stands out as a positive and influential role model for the community Craig serves. Award recipients have positively impacted others around them and have contributed meaningfully to increasing the quality of life for people with spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries, while achieving significant success in their personal and professional lives.

The 2016 Inspiration Award will be given to Mike Utley. On November 17, 1991, the Detroit Lions’ offensive guard was paralyzed during an NFL game against the Los Angeles Rams at the Silverdome in Detroit, MI. Mike’s courageous “Thumbs Up” gesture as he was carried from the field has come to symbolize his fighting spirit.

Mike rehabilitated from his injury at Craig Hospital. With the help of his agent, he went on to found the Mike Utley Foundation. Established to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, the Foundation supports research, rehabilitation and education for SCI.

DAVE AND GAIL LINIGER SPIRIT OF CRAIG AWARD

BRIAN AND ALICE BROWN This award recognizes a Craig graduate who, through their community service, professional achievement, and personal support of Craig’s patients, graduates, and mission, significantly brings to life the spirit of Craig Hospital to others in the community.

The 2016 Dave and Gail Liniger Spirit of Craig Award will be given to South Metro Fire Fleet Services Bureau Chief Brian Brown and his wife Alice. In 2006, Brian sustained a severe traumatic brain injury in a cycling accident on Mt. Evans. His rehabilitation at Craig made it possible for him to return to work 11 months post-injury.

Brian and Alice became passionate Craig supporters, founding and organizing the Racing For Hope Cycling Classic, a competitive race to raise money for Craig. As faithful volunteers, the Browns have served at Craig’s Family Night and have shared their story in Craig Hospital solicitations, media interviews, and the recent Redefining Possible portrait series. Alice is an active PUSH and Pedal 4 Possible volunteer.
