Into The Light of Christ

We all know the pain and weight of a dark, shameful secret. If we can tell someone, the release is enormous. Saint Paul says that even when "dead in our transgressions" we can are be "brought... to life with Christ. (Ephesians 2: 5).

Mary Ann McNeil helps burdened people to find the light of Christ. She is the founder of PATH in Atlanta, Georgia, serving people grieving an abortion. Mary Ann knows the steep price they have paid. Some have blamed themselves for decades, convinced they are unforgiveable, or have fallen prey to depression, physical illness, or risky behaviors.

Mary Ann and her trained volunteers provide carefully designed mentoring, prayer, scripture study, and sharing. This enables people who are suffering to know they are accepted and forgiven. They can rise up with renewed faith and strength to embrace their lost children in the light of Christ. The Light of Christ brings life that can raise us from the dead.

RREEFFLLEEXXIIOONNEEMMOOSS SSOOBBRREE LLAA PPAALLAABBRRAA DDEE DDIIOOSS Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo. (Juan 3:17) ¿Piensas en Jesús como un contador divino? ¿Conoce a alguien que tenga un libro mayor y verifique si está a la altura de sus exigentes y rigurosos estándares? En el Evangelio de hoy, San Juan nos recuerda que Jesús fue enviado al mundo no para condenarnos sino para salvarnos. No vino a hacer un recuento de nuestras buenas y malas acciones. Vino a curarnos, protegernos y rescatarnos. ¿Cómo puede ser? Juan 3: 14-15 nos da una pista. Sí, estamos a la altura de los mandamientos de Dios y su visión para nuestras vidas. Pero en lugar de condenarnos con justicia, Dios envió a Jesús para ser "levantado" y dar "vida eterna" a todos los que creen en él. Eso se refiere a la historia en el Libro del Éxodo cuando los israelitas estaban siendo mordidos por serpientes venenosas por quejarse de Dios. Dios le ordenó a Moisés que hiciera una serpiente de bronce y la montara en un poste para que cualquiera que la mirara fuera curado (Números 21: 4-9). Como los israelitas, nuestro primer paso es reconocer nuestra necesidad de salvación, aunque eso pueda significar enfrentar todos los caminos en los que nos quedamos cortos. Reflecting on God’s Word

God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world. (John 3:17)

Do you think of Jesus as a divine accountant? You know someone who has a ledger and checks to see if you measure up to his exacting, rigorous standards? In today’s Gospel, St. John reminds us that Jesus was sent into the world not to condemn but to save us. He didn’t come to tally up our good deeds and our bad deeds. He came to heal, protect, and rescue us. How can that be?

John 3:14-15 gives us a clue. Yes, we do fall short of God’s commands and his vision for our lives. But rather than justly condemning us, God sent Jesus to be “lifted up” and to give “eternal life” to all who believe in him. That refers to the story in the Book of Exodus, when the Israelites were being bitten by poisonous snakes for complaining against God. God directed Moses to make a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole so that anyone who looked at it was healed (Numbers 21:4-9).

Like the Israelites, our first step is to acknowledge our need for salvation, even though that may mean facing all the ways we fall short. After all, what could be more convicting than knowing that Jesus bore our own sins on the cross? But like the Israelites, we can look to the answer God gave us: the cross of Jesus.

The salvation Jesus offers us is far greater than the Israelites’ physical healing from snakebites. He heals us spiritually. He forgives us and strengthens us to live differently. He restores us to a right relationship with God. And he gives us a real hope of heaven.

So don’t fall into the trap of thinking of Jesus as an accountant. He is not in the business of condemning but of offering salvation. Today, gaze on him, lifted up on the cross. Bring your neediness to him, and let him heal and restore you.
