tradition, the month of June is a time to honor
the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion to the
Sacred Heart is concerned with the love and
compassion that is poured fourth from the heart
of Jesus towards humanity. The devotion was
popularized by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.

30 June, 2019 – 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“For you were called to freedom, brothers and
sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through love.” (Galatians 5:13)
We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to “live the
good life.” But Jesus calls us to a different kind of freedom.
St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can
serve one another, share our gifts and promote God’s work
here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves.
Happy Independence Day!
4 July—9 a.m. Mass in Catholic Center Chapel
The Staff of St. Peter the Apostle University and Commu-
nity Parish wish you a happy and blessed Independence
Day! Remember to pray this week for our Country, our
Veterans and all those still in active duty serving our na-
tion and keeping us safe!
Our guide told us that it was, in fact, a dog’s paw print.
He explained that Romans, not unlike us, were very fond
of their pets, especially their dogs. During the imperial
persecutions, some of the graves of those who were not
martyred, but remained faithful to Christ in hardships,
were sealed with a paw print. It was the sign of fidelity, a
mark of honor that proclaimed, “as a dog is faithful to
it’s master, so this Christian was faithful to the Lord.”
In honoring Peter and Paul today, the two apostles who
are the foundation on which our faith is built, we are giv-
en a challenge and a goal for which we must strive. “I
have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept
the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits
me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on
that day…” , says Paul (2 Tim. 4:7-8) as he awaits the
outcome of his imprisonment.
The challenge is this: keep the faith. The goal, of course,
is Christ Himself who is the crown that awaits us. This is
the simplicity of the message for today’s feast. Just stay
the course. Do whatever faith, hope, and love require,
and persevere through the temptations, trials, or hard-
ships that may come as a result. Christ Himself awaits us
as our crown and sure reward.
Perhaps there is no greater mark of honor we could bear
than the “sign” of the paw print; as sign that proclaims,
“This Christian stayed the
course. This Christian was
faithful to the Master.”

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
On a July night in 64 AD, a fire broke out in the city of
Rome. The fire burned for six days, devastating most of
the city, killing hundreds of people and leaving thou-
sands homeless. Historians disagree about the cause of
the fire – whether it was an accident or set by the Em-
peror Nero himself – but this we do know: the public
outcry was so great against Nero that he shifted the
blame to an obscure but growing religious group in the
city; namely Christians.
According to the Roman historian Tacitus, hundreds of
Christians were arrested and put to death in the circus to
placate the angry Roman mob. Tradition tells us that
Peter, who was in Rome during this time, died in this
first persecution, crucified upside-down in Nero’s circus
on Vatican Hill. Paul, who was under house arrest in
Rome, was executed by the sword a short time later and
buried in a cemetery just outside the city walls.
For the next three centuries, the Church would suffer
brutal persecutions, some local, and some imperial-wide.
In Rome, Christians dug a network of catacombs outside
of the city’s walls in which to bury their dead. These
catacombs are famous not only because they are so ex-
tensive, but also for the early Christian art which deco-
rated them. Martyrs were buried on simple slabs under-
neath an arch, the Roman symbol for triumph and victo-
ry. Other tombs were decorated with all the familiar
Christian symbols we know
and revere today. But there
was one symbol I did not rec-
ognize the first time I visited
the catacombs of Rome. It
looked like a dog’s paw
print…

I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh. For the flesh has
desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh;
these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want.
But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
