Lubrication systems according to API standardsWhat is a lubrication system?

Also called forced lubrication systems.

This equipment made a phisical properties interchange that make working properly the rotative element that they are acting in. These phisical properties are temperature, cleanliness, pressure and oil flow.

Lube oil system avoids metallic contact wearness on rotating movement parts.

It cleans the oil across filterings systems , retaining solid parts in suspension inside the lubricant, to avoid potential damage on contact surfaces.

It cools rotative mechanical elements. Oil loose lubricant properties to higher temperatures .



Introduction

In general, lube oil systems are incoporrated into multiple solutions, but mainly on oil & gas marke, petrochemical and energy.

It is usually designed with the final customer , the engineering or specifications applicable to a particular project.



API 610 11 Th. Edition – ISO 13709

API 610; standard to design centrifugal pumps for petrochemical plants.

In this standard there are some indications to desing the lube oil system.

Essential concepts

Pumps type lubrication for pumps to BB1 – BB5, according to ISO 13709 shall consider the following points.

Pto 9.2.6 Lubrication

9.2.6.1 If it is specified or it is recommended by provider and approved by purchaser, A lube oil system shall be provided to meet the required pressure to the bearings or the required points..

9.2.6.2 The lube oil system shall meet with minimum requirements specified on ISO-10438-3 figure B.8 and tablle B, which show minimum acceptable reyurements.

9.2.6.3 If oil is supplied by a common equipment to different machines, oil characteristics shall de same . This carachteristics shall be the ssame for all euipmentts

9.2.6.4 If it is specified, Lube oil system shall be according to ISO 10438-2, in this case customer to deliver project sheets. ,

Requirements

As indicated, in case that a lube oil system would be required, the following scheme shall be considered, according to figure B.8 and optional elements according to table B.1,..

Additionally, particulary projects specifications must be considered for each project.




API 614 5 Th. Ed. – ISO 10438:2008

API 614 standard define design parameters and manufacturring parameters for lube oil systems in oil & petrochemical market.

This equipments can be used for compressors, pumps, drivings, gear boxes….

Buyer shall define scope of supply, components level of quality, system type, equopment layout and all required requirements.El

Reservoir

- Design according to chapter required ( general or special purpose)

- Made in stainless steel AISI 304 or possibility to manufacture in AISI 316.

- Lube oil system location, part of skid, stand-alone or mounted on baseplate.

- Sloped bottom to improve draining.

- Optionals: Calm plates, prefiltering elements, magnetic elements…

Reservoir

Included accesories in reservoir are::

- Level gauge (reflex welded, with valves , magnetic.

- Level alarm (Pressure differential transmitter, magnetorestrictive, radar)

- Temperature control ( Thermometers, Thermostats, temperature transmitters, thermowells, thermocouples…)

- Electric heater (flanged, hazardous area, indirect heating,…)

Pumps

- Other standards that can be included in design can be API 676 , with casing in carbn steel and centrifugal pumps according API 610.

- Motors power consumption shall be sized accordingly, either alternative current or coninous current for emergency pumps.Motors can be according to IEC or NEMA; besides if it is required motors shall comply with the requested area classification. (explosionproof, antisparking…)

- The moto-pump shall include safety valves according to standard API 520-526

Heat exchangers

Water as cooling medium is the most used. However, air is very important in areas where wateravailability is not possible. Depending on application and project specifications, different types andcharacteristics shall be taken into account.

The oil/water and oil/air coolers can be simple or double

- Shell & tube, plates or fin-fan.

- ASME VIII DIV.1, TEMA C, TEMA R, API 661, U-stamp.(optional)

- Carbon steel, stainless steel, inhibited admiralty brass, marine brass Cu-Ni 90/10, etc…

- Optional thermostatic valve (self regulated, pneumatic control or electric),

-Simple filters or double changeable on working

-Fiber cartridge from 10 micron

- Body in carbon steel or stainless steel.

- Clogging indicator (Differential pressure gauge, pressure switch or differential pressure transmitter)
