• Do I have enough information?

• Is someone else influencing my decision?

• Do I believe I can make the change?

• Am I allowing enough time to make the change?

• Life pressures, for example, finances, stage of life (child care responsibilities)

• Consider work portfolio or non work life

Following this session we encourage you to reflect on your previous career decisions

• What influenced you at the time?

• How did you decide?

• Are those influences still there?

• Think of a good career decision you made, why did it work?

• Discover your career decision making method and decide whether you are happy with it (e.g. pickers….)

Career counselling may help you deal with significant negative events which may have left you with:

• Lowered confidence – in your ability to do a job and to make decisions

• Grief and anger reactions – sometimes apparent to others

• Avoidance of related activities or industries

Apart from seeing a career counsellors you may prefer to:

• Talk it over with someone you trust

• Rebuild your confidence and strengths (time, getting back to old pleasant activities, recall life before and put it in context)

• Retrain and refresh skills – get back to basics

• Give yourself time and patience

Career Decision Making Theories

There are career decision making models and theories available, but remember its up to you to determine your preferred method

• “What do I think is important to in this decision?”

• Don’t take career questionnaires too seriously – you know yourself best what will ‘fit’

• Get feedback and recognise any unnecessary pressure you are bringing to this decision

• E.g. Planned Happenstance (1999), “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.”(John Krumboltz 2009)

Keep your networks active to know your industry• LinkedIn Groups and other online content• Be open to opportunities through word of mouth• Building your networks (e.g. LinkedIn contacts,

visiting organisations, professional associations/bodies)
