'God Save The King'
In 1603 Queen Elizabe, thl, ruler of Britairu died and had a deathbed wish of her cousin,
King James VI, would take over her throne in England. King James VI used this name to
continue is reign on Scotland, but used King James I to rule England ("History of the British
Flag"). At this point, the England flag was white with a red cross and the Scotland flag was blue
with a white X shape. The two flags were merged together in 1606 to represent King James
ruling both nations together and it was known as the Union Flag. This version of the Union Flag
remained until 1801 because Ireland joined Great Britain and the flag was redesigned to
encompass the Irish national flag as well ("History of the British Flag"). The Irish flag was a
white background with a red X shape, which was merged with the former Union Flag to create \
this British flag that is still used today
The British National Anthem was publically performed for the first time in 1745 in L{t-."'
London, but it was not officially known as the National Anthem until the beginning of the
Nineteenth century ("National Anthem"). 'God Save The King' became an exftemely patriotic
song and well known, as the tune has been used by many composers, even in other countries.
There is not an authorized version of this National Anthem because the words are considered a
tradition and the word 'Queen' can be substituted for'King' whenever it is necessary.
