Is 25:6–10a / Phil 4:12–14, 19–20 / Mt 22:1–14 or 22:1–10

Sometimes Jesus’ words can seem quite vague to us; at other times, he makes his point with extreme clarity. The latter is the case today. For the past three Sundays, Jesus has used parables to  indict the religious  leaders for their self‐righteousness, their assumption of God’s  favor, and  their  rejection of  Jesus. Today he compares them to wedding guests who decline their  invitation to attend. Some must see to more  important  matters;  others  believe  they  needn’t  attend  because  they’re already in the host’s good graces.

The  story  doesn’t  end well  for  them,  and  outsiders  accept  the  invitations.  Jesus indicates  the  religious  leaders  can’t  slide  by  in  the  Father’s  eyes—salvation  is guaranteed to no one, especially not to those who reject the Father’s invitation.

We might too easily dismiss this story as one that doesn’t apply to us. We wouldn’t reject an  invitation to God’s banquet. Yet don’t we often put other responsibilities and  activities before our  relationship with God? Don’t we  sometimes  take God’s love  for granted?  “God  can’t possibly  expect us  to  live  as Christians 24/7.”  “That little lie I told isn’t so bad.” “God always forgives us, right? We don’t have to try that hard.” If those thoughts sound familiar, we have more in common with the invited wedding guests than we thought.

Our response to God’s  invitation should be an ongoing, daily response rather than one given only when it’s convenient. We have important responsibilities every day, but we can’t accomplish any of them without God—a truth Saint Paul echoed in our second  reading:  “I have  the  strength  for  everything  through him who  empowers me.”

With these words first on our lips, we can respondez, s’il vous plaît (RSVP), to God’s invitation with a resounding yes—and renewed commitment and conviction.

see the sign up at the front door of the church, or see Gwen Kurahara or Val Low .

In 2009 St. Damien of Molokai was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI  in a Mass at on October 11. Bishop Silva will celebrate the 12 Noon Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, on Tuesday, October 11th to commemorate the 2nd Anniversary of the Can‐onization of St. Damien.

Here at St. Stephen, we will celebrate 8:00 a.m. Mass in the Chapel of St. Catherine in the building next to the church. Please join us. We will also celebrate an evening Mass in the chapel at 6:30 p.m. with a potluck and a 60 minute documentary, Uncommon Kindness, narrated by Robin Williams on the life of Fr. Damien.

During  the beatification homily, Pope  John Paul  II  said:  "Holiness  is not perfection ac‐cording to human criteria; it is not reserved for a small number of exceptional persons. It is for everyone; it is the Lord who brings us to holiness, when we are willing to collaborate in the salvation of the world for the glory of God, despite our sin and our sometimes re‐bellious temperament."

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is primarily a class for those adults (over the age of 8) who are interested in receiving the Sacrament of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. This  year  the  classes will  include all  those who want  to  learn more about their faith, who need the Sacrament of Confirmation and those who are trying to come back into fellowship with the Church and with one another. Have you found yourself distracted, lost or bored during Mass? Unable to answer questions put forth by other Christians, powerless against  sin and  temptation? You may want  to check out some of the coming discussions and topics to be covered by RCIA. It’s not just for those who have never heard. Q&A session Oct. 30 after the 9:00 a.m. Mass.

This is the time of year where the Diocese asks us to count all those attending Mass. Please be certain to be at Mass early and plan on coming each week so that you can be counted.

This week we continue  introducing the corrections to the translation of the people’s parts and the Mass responses.   Please take a card home, pray it, study it and bring it back  next week for an additional card to add to your collection.

This week: The Penitential Rite Brochures are available at  the entrance of  the Church  regarding  the changes  in  the translation of the Roman Missal.

Dear Janice,

Before I answer your question, I offer my heartfelt sympathy to your friend over the loss of his sons.

The Church teaches that our lives are “not ours to dispose of” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2280). Suicide is a serious matter, but the Church also says that “Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide” (2282). Bearing that in mind, the Church compassionately states, “We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives.…God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives” (2283).

In general, Catholics who commit suicide are neither deprived of full burial rites in the Church, which commends all of the dead “to God’s merciful love and pleads for the forgiveness of their sins” (Order of Christian Funerals, 6), nor are they deprived of burial in a Catholic cemetery—a sacred place that helps bring peace to those confronted by the suddenness of suicide.

My friend’s son committed suicide. He was distraught over his brother’s death and not in his right mind. Can he be buried in a Catholic cemetery?
