Lydenburg se privaat nooddienste N3 Fire and Rescue onder direksie van Roelf Castelyn, is omstreeks 2 uur die middag ontbied na die gewilde swemgat in die Stekspruit langs die Rooikat Rugbyklub. Volgens getuies het twee jong seuns (15 en 17 jaar) gaan swem, onder die water verdwyn en nie weer opgekom nie.Nadat die toneel deur die SAPS Lydenburg beveilig is, het Deon Broekman en Johan Horn (albei gekwalifiseerde duikers) die water

se water gedrink het kom jy altyd weer terug. Hier is n pragtige gesig van die lang gras en blou berge waarvoor Lydenburg al eeue bekend staan.

n Ma en pa met baie hartseer in hul harte het n innoverende manier gebruik om geld in te samel vir hul oorlede seuntjie (Melvin Jacobs) se grafsteen. Met hulp van die dorp is hulle al baie naby aan hul teikenbedrag.

1 025 kolwyntjies vir Melvin se grafsteen

Melvin Jacobs is in 2011 oorlede en sy masamel geld in vir sy grafsteen met

kolwyntjieverkope.

In 2011 is Melvin oorlede. Hy is gebore met klapvoetjies. Met sy laaste operasie was daar komplikasies uit die teater en hy het sy vlerkies gekry, soos sy ma Monique vertel het. Hulle wou graag n grafsteen ontwerp en oprig wat hom as kind beskryf.Die R6 500 wat dit sou kos het hulle nie gehad nie en Monique en haar man JJ het Meljays Cakes begin en 1 025 kolwyntjies gebak in drie weke.Soettande kon kolwyntjies koop teen R6 elk en R3 daarvan is na die grafsteenfonds. Die 124, wat nie verkoop is nie, is aan Lelievlei geskenk. Die res is almal bestel deur goedhartige mense. Dankie aan Martins Begrafnisondernemers Lydenburg vir hul hulp met die grafsteen.Die ouers wil ook graag die volgende mense vir hul kontantdonasies bedank: Pastoor Wouter Deysel, Amanda Visagie, Justus Lindeque, Louis en Janita van der Mescht en Inkdigo (Niki). Ook aan almal wat kolwyntjies bestel het, die hulp en bystand word opreg waardeer. Die fondse wat tot dusver ingesamel is, is reeds aan Martins betaal en die grafsteen is in die vervaardigingproses. Ons plaas hopelik een van die dae n foto van die grafsteen.

hindernis kan sien nie. Filosofies, ek weet. Maar met 'n rivier het ek groot geword. As ons op 'n reis of besoek die dorp verlaat het moes ons altyd die rivier oorbrug. Soms was dit douvoordag en ander kere sterk skemer as ons verby gery het. Meestal het ons ook oor die rivier se watervlak en toestand 'n vinnige gesprek gevoer. Daar was baie riviere. Net een het egter uitgeloop op my spesiale plek. Het iemand julle al afgevra: "As jy dink aan 'n plek as joune, waar is dit? Of 'n plek waar jy al totale vrede en rus ervaar het?" Wel, aangesien ons definitief 'n filosofiese pad loop vandag gaan ek 'n antwoord gee. My plek is Lydenburg, dis my hart. Maar 'n spesifieke plek? By die bos wit Abele (vuurhoutjiepopuliere) bome wat tussen die berge staan op die Dullstroom/Lydenburg-pad. In die winter is dit lang kaal vingers en in die somer is die blare fyn-groen spookasem. Dit is seker een van die eerste dinge wat vir my geleer is: dat hulle vuurhoutjies daarvan maak. My hele lewe was ek bang dat dit afgekap word en iemand sy sigaret daarmee sal aansteek. Want sowat 20 km voor ek Lydenburg inry weet ek al met hierdie landmerk ek is by die huis. Dit is die bos. Dis seker hoe Dalene Matthee gevoel het oor haar geliefde Knysna-bosse. 'n Pragtige waterval is net duskant die Abele met 'n natuurlike rotspoel. Trout River Falls is n bekende gesig op die Dullstroompad. Terwyl ek hier skryf hoor ek hoe die kristalhelder water oor die spoelklippe kabbel. Die uitdrukking op my gesig was een van gewaarwording. Verskriklike gewaarwording. Slange en adders het net vir 'n oomblik deur my gedagtes gespoel toe ek tussen die bome gaan stilstaan het. Ek het my o toegemaak en diep asemgehaal. Daar was nie woorde nie en ek het gehuil. Ja, ek is altyd emosioneel met diep ervarings. Dit was 'n kosbare oomblik wat ek nooit sal vergeet nie. In samewerking met die natuur is 'n klein paradys geskep by Trout River Falls. Die rivier en populiere is pure elegansie. Die bos wit Abele moet asseblief bewaar word. Bosweelde wat ek graag tot op my voordeur se drumpel sal wil bring. Lydenburg is my hart, my groot liefde en huis. Daar by die blou berge ...

South Africa's water resources required smarter management if the water-stressed country was to ensure long-term water security and avoid a ripple-effect knock to its economy.Plus Economics simulated limited water availability scenarios which revealed that a lack of water could lead to the loss of 200 000 jobs in the water industry and result in a 1.2% decline in gross domestic product.A decrease in available water supply, the firm found, would also have a ripple effect on other industries, leading to reduced production and job losses. For every one job lost in the water sector, over two jobs would be shed within other industries.South Africa was considered the thirtieth-driest country in the world, suffering from low levels of rainfall, with high variability and high levels of evaporation owing to its hot climate. Two-thirds of South Africa is semi-arid with an average rainfall of 420 mm less than half the global average.Further, the United Nations 'World Water Development Report 2012' ranked South Africa 148 out of 180 countries for water availability per capita.The Water Resources Group estimated that, based on growth projections and current efficiency levels, a water supply/demand gap of 17% would emerge by 2030, as demand for the scarce commodity continued to rise.Unresolved water security, water quality and associated water management challenges could restrict South Africa's socioeconomic growth.Prior to the recession between 2002 and 2008 the sector attracted significant investments towards water infrastructure development. Since 2009, this investment had maintained a downward trend.However, the threat to water security provided an opportunity for all stakeholders to partner to pull the industry out of its post-recession slump, develop the sector further and get the country's affairs in order.Plus Economics' research found that the

DURING a meeting that took place on 20 March between Mpumalanga Municipalities and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, SPD Skhosana with Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe, Executive Mayors were told to prioritize the basic needs of communities as non delivery perpetrated violent protests in the province.The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and find ways of dealing with violent protests that negatively affect government and law-abiding citizens. Speaking at the meeting, MEC Shongwe instructed the Executive Mayors to ensure that Ward Councilors have regular meetings with their communities to avoid unnecessary protests, which sometimes result in damage of properties and also unnecessary stretching police resources.You must not take people for granted; if you cannot deliver what you have promised them, report to them and not wait for protests to break before you communicate with them, Shongwe told the councilors.He added that police officers' responsibility is to arrest criminals and not to be security guards for protests; therefore ward councilors as community leaders must play a role in preventing protests. He further said that protests are a sign that there was no proper leadership in communities, and called for councilors who are not willing to work for the people to vacate their positions.We must also move away from having Izimbizo that do not assist communities; they should not be talk shows, people must see the results and benefits after those activities, emphasized Shongwe.Meanwhile, he also called for municipalities residing next to borders and border lines to assist by regularly monitoring border activities to eliminate corruption and crime.He said that this had an impact on service delivery as non-documented people from other countries unlawfully benefitted from government services, depriving deserving people of the province of quality service.

MEMBERS of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) in Thaba Chweu Municipality and other municipalities are striking again. The workers alledge corruption and slow service delivery. They say they have raised these issues with the municipality but in vain. One of the matters raised is salary issues.This strike left the town in dire straits again as refuse removal and other basic services came to a stand still. The SABC 2 news at 19:00 on Monday reported on the strike at Thaba Chweu and other municipalities. Apparently a spokes-person of TCM gave the comment, the strikers know, no work no pay. That will remain to be seen. The Thaba Chweu Municipality was asked about the strike and other issues on Friday already by the Highlands Panorama News (proof on email). SINCE its launch to the South African public in April 2012, Kia's dramatic and eye-catching Optima midsize sedan has played an important role in building the Kia brand locally and has positioned itself as a vehicle that visually stands out from everything else in the D-segment. The Optima was originally launched with a Theta II 2.4 MPI CVVT petrol engine, delivering impressive power and performance. For 2013, the engine on the Optima has been upgraded to an improved, naturally aspirated Theta II 2.4 GDi (Gasoline Direct Injection) Dual-CVVT (Continous Variable Valve Timing) engine. Power figures on the Optima increase by 16kW from 132kW@6000 rpm to 148kW@6300 rpm, while torque increases by 19Nm from 231Nm@4000 rpm to 250Nm@4250 rpm.The two main differences on the new model include GDi technology, where petrol is injected directly into the cylinders as well as the upgrade from CVVT to Dual CVVT, both resulting in a significant increase of power and an improved overall driving experience.A serious limitation of conventional fuel injection is that, as engine revolutions increase, the valve opening and closing times get progressively shorter, thus reducing the time available to inject fuel. The GDI technology on the Optima positions the fuel injector in the most optimal location - directly inside the combustion chamber to offer unparalleled precision. With this shorter and more direct path, far greater control is attained over the combustion process: A high pressure fuel pump injects the fuel in precise amounts and intervals. Compared to a conventional engine of the same displacement, GDI delivers 8 percent more torque at low engine rpms and 10 percent more torque at the high-end for better take-off and overtaking performance. Further performance gains on the Optima were made possible by incorporating Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (DVVT) which improves engine breathing on the intake and exhaust sides for better fuel

DIE bekendstelling van enige nuwe bakkie in Suid-Afrika is groot nuus, veral as dit een van die grotes in die mark is, soos met die nuwe Isuzu KB-reeks. Die nuwe KB is die sesde generasie, met die eerste een wat in 1972 sy verskyning in Suid-Afrika gemaak het. n Groot taak rus op die skouers van die nuweling, wat plaaslik vervaardig word en na verskeie lande in Afrika uitgevoer word. Die nuwe model is 260 mm langer, 60 mm brer en 60 mm hor as die vorige model, wat meer ruimte vir die insittendes beteken. Die nuwe KB is baie aantrekliker as die vorige generasie veral die voorkant het n heelwat mooier aansig te danke aan die langwerpige opwaartse swiep van die hoofligte en die rooster met chroom-afwerking wat baie prominent vertoon. Die agterligte vou nou verder om die bakwerk met n opwaartse skuins hoek wat self netjies vertoon. Een petrolenjin en twee diesel-kragbronne word gebied, met vyfspoed-hand- of outomatiese ratkaste. Die nuwe model is soos die meeste van sy mededingers in drie bakvorms te kry, naamlik enkelkajuit, verlengde kajuit en dubbelkajuit met vier afwerkingsvlakke, Base, Fleetside, LE en die vlagskip, die LX. Die Base-model is net in 4x2 te kry terwyl die Fleetside as 4x2 of 4x4 beskikbaar is en ook hor vering het. Albei is enkelkajuite en op die werk- en handelsmark ingestel. Volgende is die LE- en LX-modelle wat in al drie bakvorms te kry is met sowel 4x2- as 4x4-aandrywing en albei is ook heelwat meer toegerus. Die LX as topmodel bied onder meer luukshede soos klimaatbeheer, agterste parkeersensors en ses lugsakke. Die nuwe KB vertoon nie net van buite nou heelwat beter nie, die grootste transformasie het waarskynlik aan die binnekant plaasgevind. Die vorige model se oninspirerende, vaal binnekant het plek gemaak vir n byderwetse, passasiersmotoragtige instrumentpaneel. As die instrumentpaneel effens bekend lyk, is dit geen toeval nie, die KB deel sy instrumentpaneel met Chevrolet se Trailblazer, wat saam met die nuwe KB ontwikkel is. Binne is daar geen tekort aan ruimte nie te danke aan 10 mm ekstra skouerruimte en 25 mm ekstra beenruimte vir die agterste passasiers. Hoewel die laaibakhoogte in die verskillende modelle tussen 10 mm en 15 mm laer is, is die laaivolume vergroot, terwyl die ruimte agter die voorsitplek-lening in die verlengde kajuit van 425 mm tot 440 mm toegeneem het. Die verlengde kajuit het nou ook hangkas-deurtjies wat agtertoe oopmaak. Die KB 300-modelle se sleepvermo van 3 500 kg is van die beste in die klas. Die minimum vragdravermo in die reeks is 962 kg vir die KB 250 D-TEQ-dubbelkajuit 4x2, terwyl die LX 300 4x2-dubbelkajuit n vrag van 1 133 kg kan dra van die beste in die klas.Die nuwe Isuzu KB-reeks bied n keuse tussen drie enjins waarvan een nuut en een verbeter is. Die petrolenjin in die reeks, die 2.4 liter-16 klep-DOHC-enjin, is heeltemal nuut en lewer 112kW teen 5 200 r/min en 233 Nm se wringkrag teen 4 000 r/min en is in die Base-, Fleetside- en LE-modelle te kry. Volgende is die laedruk-2.5 liter-turbodieselenjin wat in die Base- en Fleetside-modelle te kry is. Die enjin lewer 58kW teen 3 800 r/min en 170Nm teen 1 800 r/min en word van die vorige model oorgedra, hoofsaaklik vir die werkesels in die reeks. Die 2.5 liter-D-TEQ-dieselenjin word in die Base-, Fleetside- en LE-modelle gevind en lewer 85kW teen 3600 r/min en 280 Nm vanaf n lae 1 800 r/min. Die vlagskip-enjin in die reeks is die verbeterde 3 liter-D-TEQ-dieselenjin wat net in die LX-modelle beskikbaar is. Die enjin lewer 130 kW teen 3 600 r/min, 10kW meer as voorheen, en 380 Nm teen 1 800 tot 2 800 r/min. Al die modelle kom met n vyfgang-handratkas, behalwe vir die KB 300 D-TEQ LX 4x2, wat die opsie van n vyfgang- outomatiese ratkas bied. Op die pad gedra die nuwe KB hom heel goed met n absorberende rit sonder n geneigdheid om te wil bokspring oor ongelykhede, maar ritgehalte is dalk nie heeltemal op dieselfde vlak as Volkswagen se Amarok of die Ford Ranger nie. Die hantering is standvastig en stabiel vir n ho voertuig, maar die stuur is taamlik aan die ligte en vae kant. Die handratkas se skakelaksies is tipies bakkie-agtig, met

langerige gange. Die outomatiese ratkas doen sy ding heel doeltreffend en die skakelaksies is oor die algemeen glad en vinnig. Die KB 300 D-TEQ trek soos n trein en loop nie sommer uit stoom uit nie, hoewel die dieselenjin n bietjie raserig kan wees onder harde versnelling. Op die bekendstelling in n wildreservaat naby Hoedspruit in Limpopo is die KB-bakkies behoorlik deur hul passies gesit op n uitdagende 4x4-baan wat spesiaal vir di doel opgerig is. Glo maar, selfs agter die stuur van die 2.4 liter-petrolmodel in 4x4-gewaad kan die KB se 4x4-vermons nie in twyfel getrek word nie . Die 4x4-verstellings word nou by wyse van n draaiknop op die middelste konsole tussen die voorste sitplekke gedoen. Alle LE- en LX-modelle, asook die 4x4-Fleetside-modelle, het n sluitewenaar wat met die druk van n knoppie geaktiveer word. Die sluitewenaar kan in die ry geaktiveer word tot by snelhede van onder 60 km/h en ontsluit outomaties by snelhede oor 80 km/h. Die nuwe KB-bakkiereeks het groot mededinging van die Toyota Hilux en Ford Ranger. Die Ranger is dalk n meer verfynde voertuig, maar die KB is self n groot sprong vorentoe vir Isuzu en behoort weer rateltaai te wees. WAY back in 1993, as a poor student, I suffered the ignominy of my car being stolen and having to commute by bike. My Suzuki 185cc was a bit of a wreck but my friend Greg had a beautiful Honda CB400N twin which I adored, and purloined quite regularly. In 1996, Greg bought a 1988 model, a grey import Kawasaki GPZ600R, and it was on this machine that I learned to ride. What a pity we had to grow up, get married, have families and become responsible.We were young and dumb in those days, riding with a helmet and little else even riding with flip-flops. I still shudder 20 years on.For whatever reason (the first person to mention "mid-life crisis" gets a thick ear), in 2011 I developed this hankering for the old boney. Having always been a Honda fan, I really liked the Transalp but was intrigued by the NC700X which had just been launched.In 2012, I got my, as they say in Afrikaans, gat in rat and made an appointment to write my Learner's Licence. I also bought a helmet, so that I could start testing a few bikes.At the dealership I discovered that I'm a bit of a waif for the Transalp, it's a little broad in the beam, and I felt uncomfortable in the saddle. Conversely, I felt right at home on the NC.Within no time, I had signed up for a shiny red NC700X. Having become substantially wiser over the years, I went out and acquired a proper jacket and gloves to go with my new lid. I am a firm believer in ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time).In 2013, having ridden my new toy for a few weeks now, I am ridiculously stoked. I've done a couple of commutes (I work 55km from home) and a bit of riding around our suburb.The character of the engine really suits me, with loads of low-down torque and a car-like redline at 6500rpm. The mechanically astute amongst us will point out that it is possible to balance a parallel twin with a pair of balance shafts, for a completely smooth experience. Honda however, elected to deliberately omit one shaft, and in so doing, imbue the engine with a gentle twin throb, hence character.The power output of 38kW may not seem like much, but the bike's forte is torque, which hustles it along quite handily, through its six gears. The bike maker claims a fuel economy of 3.5 litres/100km.Instrumentation is sparse but effective, with a bar-graph tachometre across the top of the screen, and a large-digit speedometre readout central to it all.The forward-canted engine and fuel tank below the seat do wonders for handling, due to their effect of lowering the centre of gravity. Having not been a regular rider for so many years, I am still redeveloping my confidence, and the Honda's superb road manners are just the fillip.The bike is also something of a looker, with that curvy faux tank-seat-tail profile, judicious use of fairings, and stylish black 17" rims.So it goes like hell, runs on the smell of an oil rag, handles like a kart, looks great, and sounds like a throwback to early 80s twins. What if I add in that it only needs to visit the mechanic every 12 000km and only costs R66k, list?Sounds like a winner to me! And I love it. Author - Andrew Perkin -Wheels24.co.za

TEAM Bairy Hollocks emerged the winner of the 10th Land Rover Centurion Defender Trophy. The milestone event in one of the most respected 4x4 competitions in South Africa, was described by many as the most challenging and unanimously as the best. Warren Vos and Peter Healey displayed a masterful approach to the epic event, their experience and teamwork ultimately giving them the edge.The tenth anniversary of the Land Rover Centurion Defender Trophy follows a long legacy of Land Rover off-road competitions that have included such iconic events as the Camel Trophy and the Land Rover G4 Challenge. This exciting 10th year anniversary challenge was a fitting celebration of the iconic Defender's prowess and one of the most challenging for the hardened competitors.Team Bairy Hollocks showed whole-hearted determination and consistently displayed all-round Defender skills to take the 10th title from Two Brothers & a Landy (Rob and Mike Eriksen-Miller) and Team Oupoot (Trevor Stiebel and James van Onselen). This year's event was held on the historical Prynnsberg Estate owned by Rick Melvill (of Melvill & Moon fame) just a few kilometres from the town of Clocolan, providing a centralised point for the five -day event, and some of the most grueling driving conditions. Rain and the consequent mud gave the event a further twist.The competition was fierce as teams pitted their skills not only against the Free State countryside but against each other too. The stakes were the highest they have been: not only for being recognised as some of the best off-road drivers in the country, but having a Land Rover Defender 90 as the main prize from Land Rover Centurion. The Hella Night Challenge was perhaps the most taxing, testing the team's communication skills, night vision abilities and technical driving skills whilst at the same time, traversing rocky terrain. The teamwork activities extended to floating a replica Land Rover Defender across a dam, crossing a mud gully and navigating through a gully. The driving challenges within time trials included winching, general extreme off-road driving, raft building,

DIE Suid Afrikaanse Skole Atletiek (SASA) kampioenskappe het plaasgevind in Oos Londen vanaf 20 tot 23 Maart 2013. Volgens 'n plaaslike koerant in Oos London was daar so 1 800 atlete van regoor die land (al nege provinsies) betrokke. Mareli Hiemstra en Isak Beytell het die Mpumalanga span verteenwoordig. Albei het uitstekend presteer en Isak het 9de algeheel geeindig in die 100m hekkies, seuns o.15. Mareli het net so goed gevaar en alhoewel sy haar uitdun gemaklik gewen het, het sy 7de algeheel geindig met die finale van die meisies o.17, 800m. Dit was werklik ho gehalte atletiek en 'n ervaring net om deel te wees daarvan. Hulle was die enigste twee van Horskool Lydenburg wat deurgedring het en ons is opreg trots op hulle.

Martin van Rooyen was crowned Club Champion for the third time in a row by Club Captain Rudi Conrad. He thanked all the players that took part in this year's Championships and congratulated all for competing in very hot and humid conditions at the prize giving on Sunday afternoon. He also congratulated the green keeper Johann Swanepoel for the great condition of the course and the set up for the competition, and Martin van Rooyen for all the hard work with the organizing of the Championships.Saturday saw very good scores come in from the field of 35 players, in the sweltering heat and also very unpredictable wind that blew, sometimes gusting very strongly. This could be seen in the back nine scores. Championship Sunday was to seperate the men and women from the boys and girls. As in all major competitions world wide, the weaker players start to play first and then the teams with the possible winners thereafter.
