Chi Chi’s 3rd Birthday!

Continued from page 1“They were pretty hysterical,

the kids were screaming,” said Anthony McKenzie, from two doors down.

“She (the mother) was in tears, but very quiet.”

It is not yet known whether the house had working smoke alarms.

Mr Dalton said smoke alarms should be installed in every bed-room, hallway and living area of a house and can be tested easily by pressing the test button.

Any smoke alarms nearing 10 years of age should be replaced.

He said it was common for people to remove smoke alarm batteries if the sound went off while they were cooking.

But with the newer style pho-toelectric smoke alarms, which detect the sight of smoke rather than the smell, false alarms should not be a problem.

Smoke alarms are easy to in-stall, but for elderly or immobile people who need assistance, the fire service can do it for them.

Fire alarms save lives

By Glenise DreaverPicton’s 200 cubic metre

landslip was the second lead on TV1’s 8am news yesterday.

It was announced that a dozen residents of Wellington Street who spent a night away from home after being evacu-ated on Wednesday were now able to return.

By 4.30pm on Wednesday, staff of Crafar Crouch had cleared the soil and debris in the street, which stretches up the road behind the St Joseph’s Church Presbytery. The nine affected homes were the last

ones at the top of the street. After an engineer’s inspec-

tion, residents were advised not to return on Wednesday and the road stayed closed overnight.

Marlborough District Coun-cil Assets and Services manag-er Mark Wheeler said the rain stopped on Wednesday night and those affected were able to return after a Picton-based geotechnical engineer was consulted again on Thursday morning.

The weather forecast predicts only light rain for the next few

days, which will enable the remains of the slip to dry.

Mr Wheeler also said that the private land owner was

expected to have EQC engi-neers inspecting the site soon, as remediation of the hillside is considered.

Picton landslip makes national news

Crafar Crouch employees Bradley Horncastle, left, and Geoff Kerslake were part of the team clearing Wellington Street.

Quake demolition for Blenheim Building

Another Blenheim building that failed to meet earthquake standards has been demolished.

A Marlborough Lines building on Sinclair Street came down last week and the company’s managing director Ken Forrest said the site would be landscaped but no new structure would go up.

“We’ll landscape the area and tidy it up, making it attractive,” he said.

Mr Forrest said the building was most recently used for storage.

“It hasn’t been used in a while and since the earthquakes it had to be demolished because it failed to meet required earthquake standards.”

no Beer for thirsty thieves

Police are searching for offenders who tried to force open the doors at Blenheim’s Criterion Hotel on the night of September 24.

The unknown suspects used tools to try and force the doors but failed to gain entry to the Market Street building.

Police are reviewing CCTV foot-age from the cameras located in the CBD.

‘Bee’ prepared to have a sweet time at the first-ever Spring Honey Festival tomorrow.

Featuring fun for the whole fam-ily, including games, market stalls, delicious food and wine, the only thing that could hamper the event is the weather.

The Spring Honey Festival is a

joint venture between Hunter’s Wines and The Honey Company, who wanted to put on a fun, old-fashioned festival for the entire community.

Hunter’s Wines’ marketing coor-dinator Sarah McDermid said the festival needed to have a distinctly Marlborough theme suitable for families that, for once, wasn’t centred on wine.

Hunter’s then teamed up with The Honey Company and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Spring Honey Festival will feature a host of kids’ activities like pin the bee on the flower, egg and spoon races, colouring competitions and face painting.

There will also be live entertain-ment, wine tastings, fudge, honey crepes and Hunter’s chef Alain

Hauswirth will be cooking up a range of gourmet honey-inspired meals in the resaurant.

Prizes will go to the best honey-inspired costumes.

The festival is at Hunter’s Wines on Rapaura Road from 10am-4pm.

Entry is free, but there will be a gold coin donation for games.

Buzz into Spring Honey FestivalPreparing for the spring honey festival are Jane hunter of hunter’s Wines and Claire lindqvist from the honey Company, with Bumble Bee.

Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith is welcoming yesterday’s conviction of a Blenheim man over the killing of 23 New Zealand fur seals on the Kaikoura coast in late 2010.

Thirty-eight-year-old Jemaal Large was convicted on two charges of wilfully ill-treating animals.

Mr Large did not dispute that he, along with co-offender Jason Godsiff, who has already been sentenced for his part in the attack, killed the seals but had pleaded not-guilty to ill-treating the animals.

The fur seals, including some newborn pups, were beaten to death with a galvanised steel pipe at the Ohau Point seal colony in

late 2010. “The men were charged under the Animal

Welfare Act because of the tougher penal-ties available under this Act compared to the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This reflects the seriousness of the attack and the large number of seals killed,” Dr Smith said.

Mr Large will be sentenced next month.

holiday farm safety

With school holidays starting today, Marlborough farmers are reminded to be vigilant when it comes to children and farm safety.

“Our home is our workplace and when the children are home from school, we need to be more alert to hazards around the farm,” says Jeanette Maxwell, Federated Farm-ers health and safety spokesperson.

“Last year we had 14 fatalities and 408 serious injuries on farm.”

RJ Hill expansionOne year on from establishing a presence

in Marlborough, RJ Hill Laboratories opened its expanded wine and food mi-crobiology laboratory in Grovetown Park’s Marlborough Research Centre this week.

The $500,000 regional investment gives the laboratory room to expand its local staff from seven to nine.

It has also installed new, high-tech equip-ment to service its rapidly expanding wine customer base.

It has been a hectic week for the staff at Mitchell Sports Power, as the business has moved to a new location on Scott Street.

The sporting goods store held a massive sale last weekend in a bid to clear stock from the old premises on Wynen Street.

The old building that housed the business was due for demolition.

“ Confused about whether you can get a mortgage? I can help!”

The Picton Heritage and Whaling Mu-seum has reapplied for a resource consent for a whaling wing extension on the foreshore.

The application is for the construc-tion of a two storey, 18 x 12m building to display two whaling craft gifted to the museum, the whale chaser Cachalot and Ron Perano’s replica whale boat Swiftsure.

The extension would also allow better display of the museum’s whaling artefacts.

This revised submission comes after an earlier application for a $1m extension was refused largely based on section 104 of the Resource Management Act. Independent commissioner Richard Fowler said in October last year it clashed

with the New Zealand Coastal Policy State-ment because it covered open public space.

He said it also failed to meet the criteria of Marlborough’s Regional Policy State-

ment and with the Marlborough Sounds Resource Management Plan.

Dr Bill Brehaut, the museum’s extension liaison spokeman said these issues had been addressed.

The new concept drawings show a free-standing building with a glass-walled link span to the existing museum.

As well as a small theatrette, a mezzanine floor is planned.

Although the extension is two storeys, the view from London Quay would be that of a single storey building.

The society has also offered to remove the disused concrete changing sheds in partial compensation for the grassed area taken by the extension.

It is seeing the joy on people’s faces when their cherished leather goods have been reju-venated that makes work all the more satisfying for Ken and Jude Eustace.

Ken and Jude, owners of Leather Restorations at Spring Creek, are able to make old leather furniture, car seats, bags and shoes look near new again.

It can be a meticulous process, and one the pair lovingly and painstakingly undertake, but they are both incredibly pas-sionate about what they do.

“We have been involved with leather for about six years now and we mainly do leather furniture,” Jude explained.

“We don’t do leather jackets or saddles at this time, but we can do things like shoes and bags.

“We can also change the colour of shoes, which is great for weddings.”

The couple previously owned Jae Services, which involved carpet cleaning, upholstery and flood restoration, and this is where their passion for reviving

leather goods developed. They started up Leather

Restorations, a part-time en-terprise, about a year ago, but Jude recently gave up her other job to focus solely on it, as it is her passion.

Ken hopes to also make full-

time work of it, but that will depend on their ability to attract community support.

The crafty twosome are able to clean and revive items that are worn out, faded or sun dam-aged and those that have nicks, abrasions or cat scratches.

“People don’t realise that the quality of leather produced today is not as good as it once was,” said Ken.

“We give people a chance to keep their beloved items that they would otherwise throw out.”

A new iPhone app is helping people who feel unwell to self diagnose.

Health Minister Tony Ryall said the new Healthline symp-tom checker phone application, launched this week, was helping New Zealanders access free health advice at the touch of a button.

The symptom checker can be downloaded for free from iTunes.

“People can enter their symp-toms by either selecting the area on a body map or searching by name from a list, such as leg injury.

“Depending on the type of injury or illness and the severity of the symptoms, the courses of action may be calling an ambulance, seeing a doctor within 24 hours or information on how to manage the condition at home.

“When you download the symp-tom checker you can add your GP’s phone number.

“If the suggested course of action is phone your doctor you can do

it with a push of a button through the phone app.

“The Healthline symptom checker has been adapted from the successful Australian application.

“It has been modified to our environment, so information about brown snake and red back spider bites have been removed!

Four-year-old Bronson Blissett proudly displays the rocket project that he and his fam-ily prepared for Redwoodtown kindergarten’s science fair on Tuesday September 24.He and his three-year-old sister Brooke learnt how to launch a rocket and used a pump, a coke bottle and some water for propulsion. The kindergarten has focussed on experimental science this term. The aim is to stimulate

children’s thinking while pro-viding resources and equip-ment for them to develop their own theories on how the world works.projects included building con-structions, plants grown from a seed, photography, a model of the solar system, mixing liquids and colours, growing crystals and bottle rockets. Libby Gunn from Hills Laborato-ries came to view the children’s work and give out certificates.

Local members of the New Zea-land Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) rolled up their sleeves to clean up the Wairau Diversion as part of this month’s nationwide Spring Clean project.“The Spring Clean is a practical way for members to not only give back to our community but also to reinforce our commitment to the environment,” said Kevin Addley, NZMCA’s Marlborough

area chairman. “As an organisation we’re proud of our beautiful country and we recognise our responsibility to play a part in keeping it that way.”He says the environmentally con-scious members chose the Wairau Diversion for the Spring Clean because the area was a popular spot with locals and visitors for fishing throughout the year, espe-cially during the whitebait season.

They held a rally at the diversion last weekend and felt it was the ideal time and place for the Spring Clean.Over 30 members turned up to the rally and picked up all kind of things including used four litre oil containers and their contents. The event was also a way for local NZMCA members to celebrate the organisation’s 50,000th member-ship.

IT'S TIME FOR A MORE OPEN APPROACHAs a candidate in this years local body elections, I am delighted to see the number of people who have put themselves forward for oce. This shows that certain individuals just like myself are up for the challenge. Over the next few weeks leading up to Election Day all manner of statements will be made to entice you, the voter, to back them and their vision for our district.

I love the fact that I live in a country where we can all exercise our democratic rights once every three years, and decide who is doing the business for us, and who is not. I like to keep things simple, like most Kiwis. Have the present councillors met our needs well? My view is that they have all done their best, but is it time for some changes? I, for one, feel that the time for exploring new angles that will better meet your needs as ratepayers has come.

I will work hard to represent you, and your needs if elected. It's time for a more open approach.

I Support A Healthy District

Long term environmental sustainability are high on my agenda. I have always believed we have a responsibility to care for our environment if it is to sustain us all going forward.

I also believe that there have been issues that have been causing major concerns within our local environment, and these concerns need to be addressed in a clear, and transparent way.

If elected my approach would be to work closely with all participants to achieve sustainable outcomes for all concerned.

look me up

I am available at Election HQ at 3 Maxwell road Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

My v i s io n i s t o h ave Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman working together equally to deliver the best possible health outcomes for all people in the top of the South Island.

To achieve this vision we need to be innovative, creative, and business savvy . My experience in private business, community and business boards, combined with 30 years as a medical practitioner

(23 years in Marlborough) both in hospital and general practice offers something of real value to the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board.

The elections are held at the same time as the MDC elections.

Last time, only 26 per cent of valid votes for NMDHB

candidates were received in Marlborough. There are, in to-tal, 23 candidates standing for seven seats across the Nelson/ Marlborough/ Tasman area.

Without a strong Marlborough vote, the area could find itself unrepresented on the board. Local candidates have there-fore decided on a collaborative

approach to raising awareness of the need to vote to help pro-tect health services in this area.

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board candidates

Dr Brigid Forrest

I am a current NMDHB mem-ber, a member of the Disabil-ity Support Advisory Committee and Disability Support Services Steering Group.

After an accident in 2006 which left me paralysed, I have gained

extensive experience in the health system.

I bring to the board strong local knowledge and an awareness of what it’s like to be a patient.

Throughout this term on the DHB, I have been a staunch

advocate for the maintenance of health services throughout the region.

I have also sought to pro-mote discussion and raise aware-ness about older people’s health issues.

Fleur Hansby

My extensive background in health and nursing has pro-vided me with practical and management experience. This includes leadership roles with the Plunket Society, NZ Red Cross, Health Funding Author-ity, Capital & Coast DHB and Hospice Marlborough, all of which required strong advocacy and governance skills.

In my role establishing, and then managing Marlborough’s hospice and palliative care service I came to fully appreciate Marlborough’s unique and generous community spirit and their need for a quality health service.

I am currently an appointed member of the Community & Public Health Advisory Com-mittee for NMDHB. I support

closer ties between community and hospital based services so the people of Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman get timely care as close to their home as possible.

Please note there are two Jenny Blacks standing. The Nelson-based, current board chair is also called Jenny Black.

Jenny Black

As the Marlborough Strength-ening Families coordinator and a self employed dietitian, I enjoy my spare time coaching swim-mers and nurturing our youth with lifelong skills.

Living in Blenheim with my husband and three children, I

have a strong commitment to the health and well-being of those living in our community and would advocate for services that can be wrapped around the whole person/family.

I feel I have the appropriate understanding and skills to “think

outside the box” and support collaboration between sectors - health, social services and local government.

I am acutely aware of the chal-lenges faced by NMDHB in prioritising health services.

Jenny Gane

I am standing for the NMDHB to ensure there is a strong voice for Marlborough to ensure we retain our services. Our hospital must continue to function at the present level.

We have a number of high risk

occupations, including marine farming, logging, farming and tourism. We need to have access to medical and emergency services. Families will only come to our region for employment if there is reliable health care.

These are the future.I am deeply passionate about

this and have a wide practical experience. I want to ensure the allocated budget is spent wisely and in the areas for which it is intended.

Pam Thomlinson

How to voteTo ensure a valid vote, it is important NOT to

“tick” your preferred candidate. You number them in order of your preference, and do not put a number beside any candidate you do not wish to vote for.

Some people do not understand the voting pro-cess and either “tick” their preferred candidate or don’t number correctly.

Photo supplied.

Today we run information on the first five of the nine Marlborough candidates standing for the seven Nelson Marlborough District Health Board seats.

DAVID & CRISTINA BLENHEIM

For 25 years Versatile Homes & Build-ings has had a strong presence throughout Marlborough, and now since the launch of its range of new homes Versatile is continuing to go from strength to strength.

The Marlborough franchise is owned by Renwick couple David and Cristina Hansen who purchased the franchise at the beginning of the year.

David, who has worked as an independ-ent builder in Marlborough for the past 10 years decided it was time to expand their services and felt the Versatile brand fitted best with their own values.

Supported by Cristina in the adminis-trative role, the couple are proud to be part of a highly respected, trusted and professional company.

“Versatile is all about building quality and affordable homes and buildings that last, and using local suppliers and raw materials where possible is important too,” David said.

Since taking over the franchise David has built three homes and is in the process of building one of Versatile’s new plans.

The home is located at the corner of Kirk and Brydon Streets in Renwick, and will be available for viewing by people interested in the new plans.

“Versatile’s new plans are simply exam-ples of what we can do to give ideas and inspire those who are looking to build.

“We have a fantastic design team who can alter the plans and work to the clients needs. Homes can even be designed from scratch if need be,” he said.

The same applies for garages. These can also be custom designed.

Once a plan has been settled on, Ver-satile offers fixed price contracts with no hidden extras, meaning clients know exactly how much they are paying.

Dave and Cristina welcome all enquiries and are happy to meet you onsite to dis-cuss your requirements and tailor design a package to suit your needs.

“We can take care of as much or as little as you want, including building consents, driveways, drainage, electrical and even curtains,” David said.

Call for a free no obligation site visit and

quote, or to explore the many and varied options for your building requirements.

You can also contact David and Cristina to organise a walk through of their current build at 13 Kirk Street, Renwick.

Versatile Homes & Buildings is currently building at the corner of Kirk and Brydon Streets in Renwick, and this home will soon be available for viewing.

Why go anywhere else? This is the message from Vortex

Marine & Outdoors owners Pete and Diana who say their range of hunting, fishing, firearms and ac-cessories are extremely affordable, and in many cases the cheapest in town.

From the outside of their Dobson Street building people can be forgiven for thinking they only

offer boat and outboard repairs, but inside there have been some exciting developments.

Walking through the workshop where you will often see Diana working on a boat, you will come into a number of hunting inspired retail areas specifically designed to showcase the growing range of hunting, fishing and firearms range.

There is the new ‘Gun Shack’

which displays a full range of am-munition and soon to be added to the collection will be a number of new firearms.

To the right is a dedicated fishing, camping and diving area with walls adorned with hooks, lures, fishing rods, camping supplies and tents as well as Apollo dive gear.

From there it leads into a hunter’s paradise with a large stag’s head

mounted on the entrance to show the way.

A real hunting atmosphere is felt with the camou netting and dinghy display, decoy ducks and manne-quins dressed in full outdoors gear.

But it doesn’t stop there.Hunting enthusiasts are in for a

real treat when they venture up-stairs to the clothing and footwear display area.

The walls are lined with clothing racks, backpacks and accessories while display stands hold outdoor boots, gloves and camouflage face masks.

So, back to the original question; “Why go anywhere else?”

Visit Vortex Marine and Out-doors, browse through the range and prepare yourself for your next hunting or fishing trip.

More than meets the eye

Pete is happy to announce he has been granted his firearms dealers license and will soon be stocking a range of new firearms inside his ‘Gun Shack’ as soon as supply is confirmed.

Other items which are selling well are the ammunition and reloading components.

“Sales are booming and we are stocking more for a bigger range all the time,” Pete said.

For those requiring repairs and modifications to their firearms, there is no need to send them away. Vortex Marine & Outdoors has the support of a local gunsmith who can carry out the work.

Binoculars and scopes:Brands such as Swarovski, Ziess,

Leupold and European Minox are in stock, though Pete can source any brand you want.

Things are ‘booming’ around here

Pete and Diana have over the years invested a lot of time, money and training into the outboard repair side of the busi-ness, and believe they come out on top as being the best in town.

“Diana and I have had exten-sive and up-to-date training and have all the diagnostic tools for Yamaha, Mercury and Etec.

“I want people to know that we can do it all here. We don’t just repair outboard motors, but we also do trailer boat repairs, engineering, bearing repairs and

welding.“And when it comes to wiring

and electrical work, save time and money by coming straight to us. We can carry out all wir-ing work associated with your trailer boat.

Vortex Marine & Outdoors offers customers the option of genuine or aftermarket parts to save money, and because they buy through one of New Zealand’s biggest importers, parts can normally be delivered the very next day.

Our repairs are unrivalled

When it comes to outdoors and hunt-ing apparel what are the main things people look for?

Waterproof, windproof, warmth and comfort.

Q. Who is the Councillor able to generate change on Council to create the right sort of economic growth?

A. David DewThis advertising has been authorised by David Dew, 4 Richmond Street.

Eighty one-year-old Brian Hutchison from the Blenheim Rowing Club was the oldest competitor to take on the New Zealand Masters Rowing Cham-pionships held at Twizel last weekend.

This was out of a total of 290 rowers contesting 85 events over the two days.

Competitors came from all across New Zealand and Aus-tralia, including a large number of ex-elite and international rowers.

Eight rowers and one coach from the Blenheim Rowing Club competed, their ages ranging from 34 to 81.

The youngest competitor in the event was 29-year-old Edwina Hooke from Sydney.

Competition was very high with some very close racing.

Blenheim Rowing Club mem-bers competing were Cynthia deJoux, Sarah Lissaman, Fiona McKay, Lindsay Fraser, Jeremy Best, Brian Parker, Mark Noble, Brian Hutchison and coach Kevin “Mouse” Taylor.

The entire Blenheim Squad won medals.

“All members competed excep-tionally well in all the events they contested and were rewarded for their effort and the training they

had done,” Mr Taylor said.“Very commendable results

from one of the smallest clubs at the regatta.”

The club took home a total of six gold medals, four silver medals and four bronze medals.

Mr Taylor said this was a fan-tastic result achieved with only a small number of rowers.

It has been a successful season for Blenheim Rowing Club, who competed at the South Island Masters Regatta in June, where they were named Top Overall Club for the second consecutive year.

A concert to raise money for a small Kenyan village was a resounding success, collecting almost $4000.

Featuring local bands, singers and dancers, the St Mary’s Youth Group Concert for Joseph’s Well last Friday generated almost half of the money needed to build a borehole well in the small rural village of Emali, Kenya.

This is where St Mary’s foster child Joseph Nzisia lives with his large family.

“The night raised $3038, and with extra dona-tions the total stands at $3938,” said St Mary’s youth minister Mieke Hilhorst.

“This is nearly half way to our goal of $9000.”The concert, held at St Mary’s Parish Centre in

Blenheim, showcased the wide variety of talent of Youth Group members and others from around Blenheim.

“First time auctioneer Maurice Davies did well to keep the auction lively with a huge array of items donated by St Mary’s parishoners and local businesses, ranging from a kayak to a barrel of slime for the kids to bid on.

“Parents donated a tonne of baking for the supper, along with local businesses New World, and Brumbies.”

St Mary’s Youth Group have been sponsoring Joseph through Childfund for the last 10 years.

it’s third race of the season last Sat-urday from Christchurch, a straight line distance of 242 km.

The 85 birds were liberated at 8.30am along with birds from the Kapiti Coast area and although the weather was relatively fine at the lib-eration point, conditions deteriorated the closer the birds got to home.

The first arrival took 4 hours 15 minutes and arrived at the loft of Carl Kirkwood of Spring Creek with a velocity of 950.04 metres per minute, followed closely by a bird from the loft of Donald Morrison also of Spring Creek taking 2nd position with a velocity of 945.06 mpm.

Joan Webb of central Blenheim also had a good fly gaining 3rd with her bird achieving 910.92 mpm, and young James Mc Ilroy was well pleased with his bird into 4th place with a velocity of 896.99 mpm.
