By Glenise Dreaver“There’s a few things I want to

get off my chest,” says Richard Feather, unsuccessful mayoral and Marlborough Sounds Ward candidate.

“And first of all of them, I want to thank those who supported me.”

While he regrets he didn’t get on to the Marlborough District Council, Richard’s not ashamed of his polling figures.

With 458 votes in the ward and 777 as mayoral candidate he is emphatic about this: “I didn’t enter to lose and I never gave up.”

“But I have regrets. I have only a cellphone and had to go down to the gate to get reception. I had no computer and no facebook.

“I was well behind the eight

ball with that.” But others who did have those

facilities scored fewer votes than he did he pointed out.

He said his partner Sue Cress-well, who stood for the Blenheim Ward, was a huge part of his support. “That meant her own campaign took a huge hit.

“I had eight meetings and made a different speech for each one.

“She helped me with this and gave me 100 per cent support.”

Richard and Sue run 80 head of cattle on 65 acres and over the campaign the maintenance work slipped right back he said.

He contrasts this with those already on council who, he said were being paid a wage and had a lot of support during the campaign.

Now, he said, he is getting stopped a lot by people he doesn’t know. They’ll have a chat in the supermarket, or nod. My profile has definitely stepped up.”

Despite the costs, Richard doesn’t rule out standing again.

“If I feel there is injustice, if there are things I believe in, I’ll

definitely try again. And he has advice for other

unsuccessful candidates.“I hope one failure means they

don’t give up. There is so much talent that I didn’t realise was there.

“Please give it another go.”

Marlborough District Councillors have asked that a suitable location for a com-mercial hydroslide be found in Picton, but have agreed that the foreshore reserve is not the right place.

Members of Council’s Assets and Ser-vices Committee on Tuesday declined a proposal from Terry Brown that he be granted a commercial lease to erect the former Timaru hydroslide on the Picton foreshore.

Most councillors had doubts about the foreshore location but they were keen to have council staff work with Mr Brown to investigate alternative sites in Picton.

Council reserves and amenities manager Rosie Bartlett told the committee that there was a significant visual amenity impact from a structure that was 8.8metres high.

The footprint for the slide was 20m X

12m but space was also required for fenc-ing and heating and treating equipment with pumps.

She suggested that other potential sites which could be considered included Auck-

land Street near the skatepark, Memorial Park and Beach Road at Waikawa.

The structure was too large for Shelley Beach and Waikawa Bay reserve.

Picton councillor David Oddie said, while the hydroslide was inappropriate for the foreshore, it was important that Mr Brown was advised which options would be likely to succeed in getting through the resource consent processes.

Councillors agreed that council staff should work with Mr Brown to investigate other sites.

Earlier, in submissions to the wider draft Picton Foreshore Management Plan, 67 people had expressed opposition to locat-ing the hydroslide on the foreshore.

Forty six were in support and another 26 in favour of finding another site for it in Picton.

Interislander has announced its decision to charter Stena Alegra, a roll-on, roll-off passenger ferry to assist during its peak summer period while the Aratere is out of service.

Stena Alegra has a capacity of 350 and a cargo capacity of 325 cars.

The ship is expected to arrive in New Zealand from Europe by the end of December with the aim of having it in service by early January.

Springlands resident Julie Saul can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want to live in a cul-de-sac.

With less traffic, they are quiet and safe, she says.

So she couldn’t understand why her neighbours would make such a fuss about a council proposal to turn their street into a cul-de-sac during construction of a new roundabout at a busy nearby intersection.

“I’m quite happy for it to be a cul-de-sac,” said Ms Saul, who owns two properties on Purkiss Street – her home and another house she is selling.

Marlborough Roads is currently seeking consultation in relation to proposals to build two rounda-bouts in Springlands – at Boyce Street and Battys Road.

The current plan would see the northern end of Purkiss Street turned into a cul-de-sac during the Boyce Street project.

The idea angered longtime resident Marita Winstanley, Ms Saul’s neighbour, who told the Sun – and Marlborough Roads – she didn’t want to live in a cul-de-sac.

She said it would cause local housing prices to plummet, infor-

mation that reportedly came from a real estate agent.

But Ms Saul is not buying it.“I’d like to talk to the real estate

agent who made that up,” Ms Saul said.

“If anything, I’m expecting the value of the properties on this street to go up.”

Another resident, Helen Hannay also supports the cul-de-sac idea.

She would be pleased to see fewer vehicles on her street.

“There is a lot of through traffic that goes quite fast along here.

“I think this street got busier because people find it easier to get out (into traffic) here than at Battys Road.”

Ms Saul says the extra travel time to go back along Purkiss Street, instead of entering Middle Renwick Road, was insignificant.

“Nobody can complain about having to drive an extra 200 metres.”

And with just seven residential properties and two businesses on that section of Purkiss Street com-pared to thousands of motorists each day, she believes the decision shouldn’t be up to the residents.

“For the greater good and the safety of Marlborough, I don’t think seven residents should have that much say about it.”

Roundabout support

purkiss Street residents Julie Saul and Helen Hannay say they support the idea of their street being turned into a cul-de-sac.

marita Winstanley told marlborough roads project engineer Andrew Adams she doesn't want her street turned into a cul-de-sac.

fAmily evAcuAtedA house in Picton was yesterday

evacuated after heavy rain caused a slip to come down against the rear wall of the building.

Police and fire brigade were at the scene helping the family evacuate before a geotechnical engineer inspected the property.

Council checked three other sites, in Wellington Street, Waikawa and Harbour View Heights, and didn’t find any other problems.

24 hours of heavy rain in Picton also put the town’s sewerage system under pressure with overflows into the Waitohi Stream and Picton Marina.

Continued from page 1The women, whose work involves supporting

families of people with mental health issues or alcohol and drug addictions, were nominated by a client who said they always went “above and beyond”.

Lyn said it was quite humbling to be hon-oured, while for Cheryl the recognition came as a pleasant surprise.

“We just want to say a big thank you to our families,” she said.

“But it’s really just what we do here – keeping

families stable and promoting their wellbeing.“We wouldn’t do it if we didn’t enjoy it.” Now in its fifth year, the Kiwibank Local

Hero Awards is one of six categories under the New Zealander of the Year umbrella.

This category recognises good deeds in the community and members of the public nomi-nate those they think have made a powerful impact on their lives.

This year, there were 240 nominations from across the country and nine winners in the Nelson-Marlborough region.

Other Local Hero awards went to Marlborough singer/songwriter Clara Van Wel, Sharon Smith from Blenheim Gymnastics Club and Picton ambulance officer Tony Cronin.

In December, the judging panel will decide on 10 Local Heroes semi-finalists with the three finalists to be announced in the New Year.

The national winner will then be selected and will also attend the New Zealander of the Year Gala Awards.

Local heroes awardedfunerAl for Jim

The funeral of James (Jim) Ham-mond was held yesterday at Church of Nativity on Alfred St.

Jim Hammond (62 years) died after a concrete water feature col-lapsed on him at his home last Saturday.

Jim, was a mechanic who owned Autotech on Nelson St. He will also be remembered for owning the Oa-sis supermarket with petrol pumps, more than twenty five years ago.

The Oasis was started by Blue Derry in the Saunders garage, where Briscoes is on Main St.

He is survived by his wife Kathy and their four children.

Brancott Estate Heritage Centre has won a 2014 In-ternational Best of Wine Tourism award, the only New Zealand cellar door to do so.

The Great Wine Capitals Global Network recently announced nine winners of the 2014 International Best

of Wine Tourism awards. They were selected from

350 applicants.“We’re thrilled to have won

this prestigious award in our second year since opening late 2011,” says Brancott’s chief winemaker Patrick Meterman. Photo supplied.

By Kristy MartinThe new owners of the Four

Square supermarket at Spring Creek say they have been blown away by the overwhelming sup-port from their staff and the local community.

Tommy Glubb and Casey Hilton-Pryor took over the business on Monday, with previous owners Alan and Adrian Withers standing down after 27 years.

Tommy and Casey have moved to the region from Auckland and running a super-market is quite a change from their previous roles – hers in marketing and his in the Army.

But after searching far and wide for the right business opportunity, the Spring Creek supermarket “just felt right”.

“It’s a change of lifestyle for us,” Tommy explains.

“We wanted to get involved in a smaller community and get out of the rat race.”

“Plus it’s a wine region, so that helps,” Casey laughed.

The early starts have taken some getting used to and there is a lot to learn, but the couple say they have often sat down

and discussed the challenge ahead.

“We’ve had that talk a million times,” Tommy said.

“We knew what we were getting ourselves into.”

Casey’s mum Jenny has also come on board to help out for the first few months.

Tommy, 29, and Casey, 27, admit it is a daunting prospect taking over from Alan and Adrian, who have built up a strong network of loyal cus-tomers.

But this is exactly what at-tracted them to the store.

“I didn’t expect people to be coming in literally day after day and remembering your name,” Tommy said.

“They’ve done such a great job and we have massive shoes to fill.”

They are hoping to install Lotto in the New Year, but most other aspects will remain unchanged.

The couple met three years ago in Spain, at the Running of the Bulls festival.

Tommy was deployed in Egypt at the time and Casey was on a European holiday.

“I followed her around Eu-rope and then she followed me back to New Zealand,” he said.

At this stage, they are not married or considering chil-

dren, preferring instead to focus on the business.

“This is our baby,” Casey said.

Support for new owners

Tommy Glubb and Casey Hilton-Pryor are the new owners of the Four Square supermarket at Spring Creek.

With December quickly sneaking up on us, the team at the Sun are already getting into the Christmas spirit… kiwi style.

Window painter Toby Hartley (pictured) brought “a bit of New Zealand kiwiana Christ-mas decorating” to our offices on High Street on Wednesday.

Art is just a hobby for Toby, who works in retail, but bookings have come in thick and fast and he will be spending the coming weeks brightening up plenty of other shopfront windows throughout the Blenheim CBD.

Dear Ed,Like a correspondent last

week I am puzzled why the second to last polling candi-date in the Blenheim Ward, i.e. Terry Sloan has been made the deputy mayor when it should actually go to the top polling or the second polling candidate.

Is this the so-called A team at work again, looking after each other?

It does not make sense to me. To the contrary is it a bit of jacking up?

Graham ElwellThis subject is now closed. Ed.

Dear Ed,There is credible independ-

ent evidence that sugar is playing a significant part in our metabolic diseases.

“Facts about sugar” (Nov 20) ignored the question that was posed in the original ar-ticle (Nov 13) “Do we realise just how much sugar we are eating?”

I suggest we do not. What is moderation? How

do we eat in moderation when sugar is disguised in so many processed foods?

It is embedded in many places we do not expect.

Sugar has over 40 names and they are unlikely to all be in the equation when consid-ering our overall sugar intake.

When considering research that backs nutritional advice, I want to know who the spon-sors are of that research and I do not want a spin on it from a public relations company.

Do your own research into the food you are eating.

Read your food labels. Edu-cate yourself where sugar is in your diet. Eat real, whole foods.

This year we photographed a wedding in Germany, which was one of those ‘life highlight’ times for us. While there we spent some time in Paris. Ah PARIS!

Q What’s your favourite music?Easy listening, particularly James Taylor. I’m pretty sure this officially makes me uncool as James had his ‘Best Of’ album the year I was born.

Q What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you?I photograph the beautiful parts of birth as well as babies who have died. The latter is my least favourite but it does give parents a beautiful image of a baby they never got to know.

Q What’s next on your wish list?

I’d love to photograph more weddings in Eu-rope, I think that’s about as cool as it gets!

Q A saying you like to live by?

“Do unto others as you would have oth-ers do unto you.” This is followed closely by “Please leave me some chocolate”.

Baked camembert with fig paste. I’ve only just been introduced to it this week, so it’s a brand new love. This would be followed closely by chocolate.

Probably anybody that will be happy with spaghetti bolognese, and I might even whip out some baked cam-embert and fig paste, just to be fancy.

Who would you invite to dinner?

Picton Christmas Parade organiser Beryl Bowers said the weather forecast for the parade and concert on Sunday was for fine though cloudy weather. “They are forecasting 17C, which is about right.”

Some 30 floats had been registered, with a number of new ones, she said.

The concert that follows will be interspersed with the announcement of parade prizes she said. Santa would also be distributing sweets and as well as the entertainment there will be free facepainting and balloons for the children.

The function will end about 5.30pm.

Beryl and her team are also starting on the Picton Maritime Festival on January 18.

Port Marlborough is supporting them, including donating prizes for the novelty raft race.

There will also be the annual mussel float raft race and entertainers from Nelson and Auckland brought in to support local groups.

A display of whaling memorabilia is being organised and the clinker boat group is running a Le Mans-style race.

As always, there will be stalls and food, with the fireworks display at 10.30pm.

By Belinda Jackson Bruce Matthews was a man on a

mission. He bought – in his own words - ‘a complete basket case’ of a 1954 Morris Minor Convertible some years ago with the intention of restoring it. It was little more than a rusty shell, but as an original convertible, Bruce was hooked, even developing a special rack that the car could be rotated on to any angle. After five or six years of nurturing and replacing parts with those from the later model Morris 1000, this same Morris Minor is justifiably his pride and joy – the shiny pewter grey, red trim and smart black soft-top giving no clue as to the original state of the vehicle.

This wasn’t the first car that Bruce had returned to its former glory. He inherited a 1935 Austin 7 from his brother which first gave him the bug for restoring old cars. This Austin 7 had first been registered to Nurse Fisher and Lenard of Wiarton Hospital in Park Terrace as the hospital’s staff car.

Once completed, Bruce found the car to be less than practical with the increasing traffic and sold it to an enthusiast in Southland where it often appears in vintage car rallies.

Bruce also owned a number of British cars through the years including a Hillman Humber 80, Vauxhall Velox, Holden King-swood and various MK IV Cor-tinas. He also had a passion for British motorcycles and still owns a 1965 Norton Dominator - a twin cylinder motorcycle originally de-signed in 1947 to compete against the Triumph Speed Twin.

Between 1978 and 1982, Bruce rebuilt another Dominator – a 1954. This was sold and is now in the North Island. He also owned a genuine, New Zealand-new, Honda

VFR 750, a ‘sport touring’ motor-cycle produced from 1986 to 1997.

Also in the garage is an MX5 (the best-selling two-seater convertible sports car in history). However, the fact that it is just a two-seater does have its drawbacks – particularly for the ever-present Fergie – a char-acter-filled West Highland Terrier that accompanies Bruce wherever he goes (unless he’s driving the MX5...)

One of Bruce and Fergie’s favour-ite past times is heading to Omaka Classic Cars for morning tea and a good chat with Owen and Jeff and

various other classic car lovers. Bruce is quick to acknowledge the great help and knowledge of Anthony and the team at Basis in Renwick and Owen Packham with

his workshop at Omaka Classic Cars. “Owen’s always ready to give advice and help with any problems. We’re very lucky to have him and Basis here.”

Bruce says he’s not a fanatic, but as a ‘bit of a petrol head’ he appreciates the vehicles and enjoys them as a hobby. “They are a bit of fun” he says.

No Minor Mission!

Nine cases of hospital treatment causing harm to patients in Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) hospitals were reported in 2012-13.

The hospitals in which the events occurred are not identified as the focus in on the NMDHB’s responsibility to manage risks and prevent recurrences.

Two people died and others had major injuries or delayed recovery as a result of what are defined as serious or sentinel adverse events.

Six were fractures caused by falls. Two deaths were associated with accuracy

of diagnoses and treatment delay. One serious event occurred when a laparo-

scopic procedure was transferred to an open procedure.

This patient had to return to the operating

theatre to have a swab removed.Chief Executive Chris Fleming said: “Each

of these events represents a traumatic event that profoundly affected patients, families/whanau, and staff.

“My sincere thoughts go to the families of the patients who died in our care. We are never immune to these tragic events.

He said that each event was thoroughly investigated and recommendations carried out promptly to ensure it did not recur.

The number of events was within the expected range for the size of the DHB he said, though it was disappointing that despite their Falls Prevention Programme there had been six people injured in falls.

He said that how nursing was distributed on the wards had been changed, with nurses stationed closer to their patients.

Picton author Dr Patri-cia Berwick will launch her new book, a Fragile Strength, at the Picton Lit-tle Theatre this Sunday.

The book tells the story of a young girl growing up in Taranaki from the 1860s-1880s and her suf-fering at the hands of an abusive father, interwoven with the unfortunate events of surrounding the siege of Parihaka.

Dr Berwick, a semi-retired educational anthro-

pologist, spends about four hours writing each morn-ing and A Fragile Strength is her first novel after 40 other publications.

She admits she is slightly nervous about the launch.

“But I hope that a lot of people come and that would be lovely.

“I really just hope that people will read it and find it of value.”

The event will commence at 11am at the theatre, on Dublin Street.

Win your body Weight in Wine

Entries are now open for the Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon.

The event will be held on May 10, 2014.

There will be a new category for the speedsters, so if you think you can run the course in less than 1hr 40 for men or 1hr 50 for women you can now enter The Dash.

This category will feature extra special spot prizes and to top it off, the fastest man and woman will each receive their body weight in wine provided by Saint Clair Family Estate.

By Adam Poulopoulos One of the region’s foremost women’s

events returns this weekend for its 31st consecutive annual appearance.

The Marlborough Women’s Triathlon takes place this Sunday, starting at Stadium 2000 at 8:30am.

Contestants will run 5.5 kilometres, before cycling 14 kms and finishing with a 100 metre swim.

So far, about 300 contestants from 9-72 years old have signed up, the highest number of entries in five years.

Two-time New Zealand Olympic triathlete Samantha Warriner is headlining the field.

Event organiser Mark Grammer said athletes will have access to Stadium 2000’s new indoor pool for the first time.

New pool aside, he said organisers were trying to bring the event back to its roots, which encouraged participation from all women of any ability.

He said new sponsor Jules Taylor Wines was helping in this regard.

“It was a successful signal that we were

giving the event back to women. “It’s totally unlike organising an event for

men because for a lot of women, it is more about the social experience.”

There are around a dozen trophies and spot prizes up for grabs on the day.

Mr Grammer said he enjoyed recognising the athletes’ achievements.

“It’s a signal it’s ok for you to enter – there’s a place for you here.

“I have a nice collection of silverware I’m looking forward to giving away!”

The first triathlon was the brainchild of a local joggers’ group back in 1983.

Vicki Green, who has helped with and competed in almost every triathlon since, said there was a tradition of Marlborough women challenging themselves as much as each other.

“There is competition, but it’s also about participation. It becomes quite a personal thing.

She said public support was always high. “There are always people on the side-line

cheering you on.”

Blenheim Kickboxing’s sole fe-male fighter Sinead Travers went down to opponent Antje Schmidt from Nelson Fight Club on Saturday night.

The women went head-to-head during the Night of Wrecking 12 held in Nelson.

Sinead lost on points in what was only her second competitive fight.

By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough’s best young tennis players will

play for a chance to compete nationally at the South Island Primary schools tournament next week.

The tournament, which includes the best play-ers from each region’s qualifying tournament, will be held at Wilding Park in Christchurch this Monday and Tuesday.

Those who perform well will have the op-portunity to compete at the national age group championships early next year.

Renwick School provides three representa-tives at the event in boys’ runner-up Torban Otway, and Torban’s siblings, twins Jade and Kyla.

Bohally’s Jack Winstanley and Ella Wil-liams and Rapaura’s Ruairi Meighan will also compete.

Parent and Rapaura schoolteacher Giselle Otway said it was a great opportunity for the kids.

“Coming from a small regional area we strug-gle to get high-level competitive opposition.

“This is an opportunity for them to test them-selves against the best from the South Island.”

Mrs Otway said the squad had the drive to go a long way in the game heading into the future.

“They’re a really dedicated bunch of kids. “They train three times a week and play on

Saturdays as well as playing other sports.”There has been a change in the draw for this

year’s event, with eight boys and eight girls set

to compete in a new division catered for players from year six and below.

The open draw, where all primary and intermediate players are eligible and includes 16 on both the boys’ and girls’ sides, will be played out as normal.

National events co-ordinator Dan Shepherd said events like these were an integral part of the New Zealand tennis calendar.

“It’s fair to say most of New Zealand’s top juniors have come through their primary school events. It’s a great springboard.”

heading to the South island tennis championships are (back row L-r) ruairi meighan, 10, Jack Winstanley, 12, and torban otway, 10, and (front) kyla otway, 10, ella Williams, 11, and Jade otway, 10.
