1.3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research is a systematical enquiry seeking facts through objectives, variables, methods in order to
discover the relationship among them and to deduce from them broad principles or law. It comprises
of defining and redefining the problems, formulation of hypothesis, collecting, organizing and
evaluating data, drawing conclusions or findings and at last carefully testing the conclusions to
determine whether they fit the formulated hypothesis.
A research design or model indicates a plan of actions to be carried out in
connection with a proposed search work. It provides only a guideline for the research to enable him
to keep track of his action and to know that she is moving in the right direction in order to achieve
the goal. The design may be specific presentation of the various steps including
1. The selection of research problem.
2. The presentation of the problem.
3. The formulation of hypothesis.
4. Conceptual study.
5. Print according to which the research to be conducted. This is the first phase of research.
Sample size The number of employees working in the company is 521 forms the universe. The
sample size taken from the survey is 140 employees, which is about 20% of the employees. The
method of collecting data is stratified sampling technique.
Data collection

The questionnaire survey is selected as lot for collection of primary data. The
questionnaire has designed by the research according to the objectives of study. Here the researcher
collects data from the supervisors, office staffs.
There are two types of data:
1. Primary Data
2. Secondary Data
1. Primary Data: Primary data are those which are collected fresh and for the first time and
these happen to be original in character. This data is mainly collected through
a) Observation Method
b) Interview Method
c) Schedule Method
2. Secondary Data: Secondary data are those which are already been collected and which
have already undergone statistical processes. The secondary method are:
a) Magazines
b) Books
c) Periodicals
d) Journals
e) Brochures
Data Analysis Here the data collections from the questionnaire are grouped into suitable table. The data are
analyzed percentage analysis. Two way classification and chi-square test. The graphs are also
prepared for more understanding.
1.4 DURATION OF THE STUDY The organization study was conducted from 1st June to 30th June.
1.5 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY Due to the shortage of time data analysis is not done. An overall performance is only studied.
Mount Zion College Of Engineering 4
An Organization study at DC Books
The project is based on personal interviews with the officials. Cent percentage accuracy could
not be provided as far as the outcome is concerned.
Errors may have occurred due to the inexperience of the researcher, though maximum care
has been taken.
It is also very difficult to ascertain the whole details of a company, because they will not
reveal all the facts about them.
Availability of workers and other management staff because of their busy schedule.
Inability to understand certain phenomenon.
It has a lack of flexibility.
2.1 INDUSTRY PROFILE The Indian book publishing industry is very attractive and has a high growth potential,
but is operating in an extremely competitive market, with over 16,000 largely small publishers
spread across the country. With the Indian economy and the education sector booming, the industry
is at a new juncture of growth and competition.
As of 2007, the Indian book publishing industry was estimated to have a market size
of about Rs. 9000 crores and was expected to grow by 10% each year. The industry is highly
fragmented and competitive in nature, with over 16,000 publishing houses and each of them having a
market share not greater than 5%. Most of these publishing houses are family owned businesses,
having passed on from one generation to the next.
Around 80,000 new titles in 24 different languages are published every year in India.
The country is the 7th largest book publisher in the world and is the 3rd largest English language
books market in the world after the U.S and U.K. However, it has a very low per capita expenditure
per annum on books of Rs. 80 as compared to Rs. 4000 in U.K.
Market Driving Forces
Three key forces drive the growth of book publishing industry in India:
1. High Attractiveness: High and sustainable margins for all the players in the value chain ensures
that each player gets his own rightful share in the value chain, prompting and motivating them to
stay and grow in the value chain.
Mount Zion College Of Engineering 5
An Organization study at DC Books
2. High Potential: With the literacy rate going up, along with the growth of the economy and the
increase in spending power, the demand for books is also on the rise, thereby resulting in high
growth for the industry too. There is a huge untapped potential in India because these factors are
only bound to become more favourable in the future, and drive the growth of the industry.
3. Protection from economic shocks: Books are commodities for the education industry. Since the
education industry is protected from any economic shocks (recessions/slowdown etc.), the book
publishing industry also gets an automatic shield against such shocks.
As the world seeks to come out of the current economic downturn, the $2 billion Indian
publishing industry is getting more organized and getting ready to take advantage of an expected
surge in the outsourcing of publishing activities. Catering to the world's seventh largest book market
overall, and third largest for books in English after the US and Britain, the Indian publishing industry
has long been characterized by small players. But they are now keenly aware of the advantages of
being part of the global fraternity, industry experts said.
According to Moody, exposure to the world is one of the primary reasons for the increase in
the number of readers in the country. “For the first 30 years since Independence, Indian readers had
been rather insulated from what was happening in the publishing industry around the world. “Good
books in French, Latin and other European languages were translated to English and we read them.
But with the mushrooming of publishers and tie-ups with foreign publishers, foreign books are being
translated and published in India leading to a growth in the industry,” Moody explained.
The Confederation of Indian Industry, a leading industry chamber, estimates that the Indian
publishing industry, which is growing at an average annual rate of 15 percent, was now exporting its
books and publishing services to over 120 countries. The export market alone has been estimated to
be worth $550 million a year. Most of the products exported are books, pamphlets, newspapers and
periodicals.
Like most other mature markets, about 60 percent of all books published and sold in
India are educational books, including textbooks. An estimated 19,000 books are published in
English each year, a figure surpassed only by books in Hindi, an estimated 20,000 a year.
The industry still suffers from a serious piracy problem, caused largely by the high price of books,
especially foreign books published under license, where currency exchange rates push up the prices.
But recently, more and more multinational publishers have realized the way to handle this is to set
up Indian subsidiaries and publish the books locally. This process has slowed down due to the
Mount Zion College Of Engineering 6
An Organization study at DC Books
global economic situation, but is expected to pick up again by the end of this year.
The industry also has to sort out how to reduce prices of books, since even popular works of
fiction rarely sell over 15,000 copies each, and sales figures for top non-fiction works rarely cross
5,000.
It is not easy to solve this problem, because Indian publishers typically price their books at two-
and-a-half to four times the direct production cost, far lower than the global average of 10. Industry
experts say increasing volume is the only way to reduce prices, and they expect this increased
volume to come mainly from the Indian languages book market. Among the multinational
publishers, Penguin has started bringing out books in Indian languages, and more are planning to
follow suit, as the book-buying population is growing fastest in this segment, in line with
newspapers sales - a result of the rising literacy level in the country.
INDIAN SCENARIO Indian publishing industry consisting of books, magazines and newspaper is estimated at
Rs. 200,000 million. Of this, the book market for educational and non educational books is worth
Rs.130,000 million approximately. Publishing industry in India is expected to grow at around 15
percent per annum to keep pace with the rising literacy rate.
The Indian book market is truly vibrant with 16,000 publishers and 30,000 bookshops
besides multi-national publishing companies like Oxford University, Press, Macmillan, Penguin ,
Haper Collins, Random House, Hachette, Picador, Rutledge Harvard Business Publishing etc who
along with Indian publishers, bring out around 70,000 titles per annum.

STATE SCENARIO
Today the Malayalam book publishing industry faces a number of problems. The major problem is
the lack of sufficient capital. The costs of raw materials have gone up. Another problem is the
distribution of Malayalam books. There is storage for sufficient outlets and showrooms for exhibiting

and selling books. When we analyze the book publishing industry in Malayalam during the past 60
years after independence, the picture that is certain encouraging.
The use of computer has made very fast and tremendous changes in the appearance of book. Most
of the Malayalam books are typed with the help of computers and printed by offset. Covers are also
designed by the computers. The books are more attractive because of modern book binding system,
lamination of the cover page etc. There is also a growth in the field of promoting book fares, book
clubs, pre-publication scheme, regular publication; monthly bulletins, easy installments etc are the
usual promotion techniques. The electronic media in Malayalam are also helping the book industry.

2.3 PRODUCT PROFILE PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY
Commercial printers produce magazines, phone books, labels, advertising brochures, cat logs,
newspaper inserts, direct mail marketing pieces, corporate reports and other financial printing,
training manuals, promotional materials, and business forms. Most commercial printers offer four
distinct services: design and other prepress services; actual printing; finishing (including folding,
cutting, and binding); and fulfillment, which include packing, storing and shipping (often on a “just-
in-time” basis).Other services can include packaging, database management, Web design, CD
Services, training and consulting.
A typical commercial printer has different presses and binding equipment available to
work on various types of jobs. The main printing process used is offset lithography, using either
individual sheets (sheet-fed presses) or continuous rolls of paper (web presses). Sheet-fed presses
print up to 16 pages of letter-sized product (16 page signatures”) at a time, at speed up to 15000
impressions per hour. Web presses print 32 pages at a time at speeds over 40000 impressions per
hour, and are usually used for production runs of more than 50000 copies.
Mount Zion College Of Engineering 15
An Organization study at DC Books
Presses usually print in one, two, four or six colors; some presses can print eight. Digital
presses are increasing in use, especially for print runs under 5000pieces. Digital technology is also
becoming the norm in pre-media services and design.
Paper is the biggest individual manufacturing cost, often amounting to 25percent of revenues.
Printing papers are often coated, and are bought in sheets or role from distributers. Many customers
provide their own paper. Paper prices can vary significantly from year to year. Commercial printers
generally don’t keep largely inventories of paper as requirements change from job to job; instead,
they rely on regional distributors to provide the many varieties and grades. Ink, films, printing plates,
and cleaning solvents are other major material costs. The solvents used to clean inks off the presses
can be an air quality issue. Major press manufacturers include Heidelberg and Komori for
conventional presses; and Xerox, Hewlett-Packard’s Indigo, Kodak’s Express, and Punch Graphic’s
Xeikon for digital large ink manufacturers include Sun Chemical and Flint Group. Printing
technology is evolving rapidly.
Virtually all prepress work is now done with computers. Digital presses are still expensive, but
falling in price and used mainly for smaller runs, but movement to an all-digital printing environment
is rapid. Small printers that delayed transforming to digital technology are beginning to do so as the
price falls. Digital presses also have the benefit of beginning to do so as the price falls. Digital
presses also have the benefit of added labor productivity, reducing the man-hours required for press
setup.
BUSINESS TRENDS
Transitions to Digital Technology-Digital presses have become the norm in commercial
printing; industry growth is coming almost entirely from Digital printing. The commercial printing
industry is shifting to faster production of smaller order quantities with more color, the major benefit
of Digital printing over offset and other printing methods. While digital inkjet printers began at the
small end of printers, technology is increasingly able to make digital printers with greater capacity.
Industry Consolidation has characterized the US commercial printing industry since 1990s, and is
ongoing due to the dramatic changes in the marketplace. Industry Consolidations are driven by
technology shifts and companies seeking to grow by expanding into new geographic markets through
acquisitions. Most consolidations are private companies, losing value and unable to keep up
technologically, selling to another private firm. Small, family-run printers are least likely to be able
Mount Zion College Of Engineering 16
An Organization study at DC Books
to afford digital printing technology and the investment it requires. Transition to Service Business-
Commercial printing has the traditionally been a manufacturing focus, it’s evolving into a service
business. Smaller printing runs, subject to customer changes, edits, and faster deadlines, are
becoming the norm. Almost all industry growth comes from companies with digital printing
capabilities, able to respond to smaller runs and changing customer needs quickly.
Lower Cost per Page-Advances in both digital and conventional offset printing
technology are lowering the cost per page for new printers. Info Trends projects that the decline in
cost per page will average 10 percent per year through 2010. As the cost of color printing has
dropped, spot color is starting to replace previously all black and white print jobs.
Digital Image Storage-Because of the increasing conversion of images to digital format before
printing, some commercial printers provide digital inventory services. Some printers, to expand
services, are capitalizing on their expertise in the transfer, manipulation, and storage of digital
images, especially in the front -end CAD process, Web page design, CD production, and generally in
document and information management and distribution.
New Printing Technologies-With the introduction of digital plate-making, the entire printing
process can be handled most effectively using digital technology. The traditional printing process
relies on cameras and photographic film as an intermediate step in the photochemical production of
the plates used in printing. New processes can make film from digital images without using a
camera.
