Kindergarten Orientation

The Kinder Orientation Days have progressed smoothly and all the pre-schoolers are settled and happy. The parent information session was well attended and I thank you all for your support and attendance. The children are certainly enjoying “big school”. Tennis

Last week Kelly, our tennis coach began at Rukenvale PS. She is an experienced coach who works in Casino. Kelly will continue the tennis program for 8 weeks at Rukenvale. Tennis is being funded from the Sporting Schools Grant which we applied for and were successful in securing. Buy Day

Last Friday we held another of our “buy days”. It was popular with most of the students ordering and buying pies. Count us in Music Rukenvale students have been singing “Gold” which is the “Count us in song” for 2015. On Thursday, 29th October at 12.30pm we joined with

over half a million students around Australia in singing the same song on the same day at the same time to celebrate Music education. Media Release– New learning Potential App.

out more. PBL Two weeks ago I attended Professional learning with many of the Principals from our Community of Schools. We attended training on Positive Behaviour for learning. This two day workshop led us through the way to successfully establish PBL within each school. We attended as a CoS group and are going to work collectively to establish PBL within our schools. This will reinforce the values and expectations of students when they visit other schools and later begin at Kyogle HS. Marcus Jones We have had a student teacher working with us for the last 4 weeks as mentioned in the last newsletter. Marcus has included some information about himself in this week’s newsletter. TEN As a Community of Schools we have been working together to ensure all our staff are trained in Teaching Early Numeracy. I am an experienced TEN teacher as I trained in TEN over 3 years ago. Myself and another Principal from a small school in the Casino community of schools applied for a grant in Term 1 and were successful. This has enabled K-2 teachers to be trained as the grant has provided funding for the teachers relief and for us, as the trainers. Abby Sawford has spent three days training and I have assisted in the training of the 16 teachers across our community of schools. It has led to students gaining many strategies pertaining to numeracy

and gaining experience through “hands on ‘activities. The students have loved these ‘games’ and I’m sure we will see the benefits in the future. Tuckshop– Friday, 6th November Next Friday is Tuckshop please ensure you send along some food and small change for your child. Juniors - please supply savoury items; Seniors - please supply sweet food for morning tea. Swimming

Swimming begins in week 8 and continues into week 9. All students will participate in swimming lessons at Kyogle Pool. A note will follow with more information. Afterlee Public School, 13th November As part of our Trading COLOURSS initiative we will travel to Afterlee PS on Friday, 13th November. This will allow the students to build relationships and participate in fun and educational activities. Please see the attached note. Thank you Kerry Flick

My name is Marcus Jones

and I am a student teacher

from Southern Cross

University in Lismore

completing my second

practicum at RPS. I have

been here for over 3 weeks now and am

thoroughly enjoying my time here. It’s a

fantastic experience to be teaching in such a

wonderful school with children so eager to

learn. I am impressed with how much these

students know, and look forward to

contributing to their learning in the weeks to

come. Feel free to come to the school and say

hello, I’ll be here for another 3 weeks.

Great celebrations: Fuel them up with the

right kind of energy!

Grate carrot & other vegies into lean mince for healthier sausage rolls or burgers.

Try delicious kebabs made with lean meat,

chicken or pork pieces and lots of vegies.

Simple cheesy vegie muffins packed full of favourite vegies and reduced-fat cheese. Kids

love the combination of flavour and colour of

corn, capsicum & grated zucchini. How about sandwich sushi made with popular

vegie fillings? Just cut crusts from wholegrain

bread, spread thinly with low-fat cream cheese,

add colourful vegie fillings, roll & slice into 2 or 3 pieces.

Mini pizzas of half a whole-

meal muffin topped with a range of fresh chopped veg, a

little ham, tomato sauce and

some grated reduced-fat cheese, place under grill for 5 minutes.

A Top Tip!

Getting your child to help pack their lunchbox can

be time consuming if they have too many options.

Try the 'three bowl' strategy... put some fruit based snacks in one bowl, vegetable based snacks in an-

other & dairy snacks in a third. Get your child to

choose one from each. It's a great way to get them involved & just leaves you to pack a sandwich (or

other lunch meal) & a water bottle!

Whopping Cough Information for Schools There is an outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) in NSW, mainly affecting school-aged children. Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Whooping cough can spread to anyone at home, including younger brothers and sisters. Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for babies. Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. The infection can occur even in fully-vaccinated children. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and may be worse at night. Children with these symptoms should see a doctor If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough in your school-aged child, please let the

school know and keep your child at home until they have taken 5 days of antibiotics. Keep coughing children away from babies.

Whooping cough vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades with time. Check that all your children are up to date with their vaccines, due at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 4 years and 12 years of age (offered to all Year 7 students through the NSW school-based vaccination program). A booster is also recommended at 18 months of age.

A booster dose of vaccine is also recommended for adults that are in contact with young children, such as school staff and parents. Pregnant women are recommended to have a booster dose during each pregnancy and this is funded by NSW Health. Those who are new parents or carers of babies should consult their general practitioner about appropriate immunisation. Your local public health unit can provide advice about whooping cough on 1300 066 055 or visit the NSW Health website for information for childcare and schools about whooping cough.
