Welcome to Summerland! Summerland, surrounded by sandy beaches and scenic hillsides of vineyards, orchards and mountains, is a gem nestled in the heart of the Okanagan Valley. Our cozy community (population approximately 11,000) has the warmth and friendliness of a small town but has all the amenities you will ever need. We have wonderful restaurants, accommodations and unique shops to visit.

The hot summer months are spent at the beaches where the water activities are unlimited. We have a children’s water park as well as a doggie beach. Golfi ng, fi shing, wine touring, visiting fruit stands, biking and hiking our magnifi cent trails are just a few of the many past-times to partake in.

Sport enthusiasts enjoy our Action Festival weekend in June which is an action packed weekend for runners, triathletes and ball players. There are a number of activities going on in the park for the whole family.

People have fl ocked to our annual Fall Fair in September for more than 100 years. We are proud to show off our community’s agricultural and horticultural achievements as well as our local talent. Summerland has a vibrant cultural life and is home to many gifted artists.

November brings our fabulous Festival of Lights celebration where the streets of Summerland are full of family and friends. During the winter months you can visit one of the many nearby ski hills. Skiing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, skating, hockey, curling and ice fi shing are just some of the fun things to do during the festive season.

Whether you are picnicking at the picturesque Ornamental Gardens, riding an original steam train at the Kettle Valley Steam Railway or enjoying a walk up Giant’s Head Mountain, you will love all that Summerland has to offer!

With plenty of sun, moderate hilly terrain and the unique soil properties provided by a volcanic past, our wineries enjoy some of the best growing conditions in the Okanagan.

Among the 14 award winning wineries that make up Summerland’s Bottleneck Drive Wine Route, there is something for every taste, including local fruit wine and organic pinot gris. Take a glass and chill out in charming tasting rooms that range from European romantic to industrial chic.

Remember to make space on your calendar for winery events throughout the year, including entertainment and unique food pairing events. Find your perfect balance with sparkling wine in one hand and truffle popcorn in the other.

For music lovers, mid June means Heard It rough e Grapevine, two days of live music and great wine. You’ll have to plan another visit closer to winter for Light Up e Vines, the largest annual local wine event of the year that runs the last weekend in November. is is when the wineries

Wine in Season at SummerGatePenticton Herald, Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013

by Scott Trudeau, used with permissionMike and Gillian Stohler didn’t let their busy life which includes running a household with their five children stop them from a dream of opening a winery. The Stohlers own and operate SummerGate Winery in Summerland and are committed to producing wines originating from estate-grown, certified organic grapes.“We’re not pushing the organic aspect although that is a value-added piece that we’ve done,” said Mike, who noted of the more than 200 wineries in the Okanagan and Similkameen region about 10 are certified organic.“We’ve always been about creating quality wine at a decent price point.” They used natural techniques such as reduced crop yield, special canopy and vineyard management practices, and working – as nature intended – without petro-chemical pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. Mike, who also sells real estate, is vineyard manager; Gillian is the winemaker. The couple met in Vancouver and had left good-paying jobs when they began to get the itch to leave the big city. “We came through the Okanagan maybe 15 years ago now and we said, ‘Wow’ this is awesome,” said Mike. “We were just stunned at the agriculture in this golden belt of fruit and grapes. I don’t think it was until a few years later that it really resonated with us.”They made several visits to the area at different times to get an idea of what it was like in each season and eventually purchased the property in 2007.The previous owner had planted grapes on the land but the vines needed some tender loving care so the following spring they spent time getting the property back into shape.Gillian took a winemaking course at Okanagan College in Penticton while the winery was undergoing its three-year certification process. She also worked with wine consultants to learn some of the day to day practices. They’ve also learned from people who have come to the winery through a work tourist program which provides room and board in exchange for their efforts. In addition they’ve developed a community of volunteers to assist during harvest in the fall. The Stohlers said they’re also more than happy to give someone a tasting from one of the tanks at various times of the fermentation process. By making an effort to be approachable to those who visit their winery some people who were customers have become friends.“It’s made it a kind of family operation with lots of networks of people,” said Mike. Their children range in age from five months to 12 years of age which presents some challenges but according to Gillian, their lifestyle is compatible with working at the winery.“Our house is right beside the winery here and so it’s easy for me to go back and forth,” she said. “I do it about a hundred times a day.” The vines grow on about eight and a half acres of vineyard. In 2012 they produced over 1,100 cases making it one of the smaller wineries in the South Okanagan.SummerGate produces four white wines: Riesling, Muscat, Kerner and Moonlight Harvest Riesling. Their 2010 Riesling, Stohler Family Reserve received a silver medal at the 2012 Pacific Rim Wine Competition. The winery is located at 11612 Morrow Ave. en route towards the Kettle Valley Steam Train. They are open daily from noon – 6 p.m. until the end of October and on weekends from November through April. DiningSummerland’s abundant local produce means fresh, dramatic flavours.

Eric Simard/TOTA/SCC

Page 13: Summerland BC 2014 Visitor Guide

When it comes to ingredients, Summerland chefs truly have the pick of the crop, with access to the best produce in the Okanagan valley, much of it grown right in our community.

Like everything else in Summerland, we take our time with our food. If we buy our sushi to go, it’s only so we can get to the beach in order to relax more thoroughly.

If you’re after a hearty lunch overlooking the greens at the golf club, a cozy family meal next to a roaring fire, or fine dining with a view of Okanagan Lake, there is always a dish waiting to tempt you. Take a drive to a winery bistro, or ride your bike to earn your dessert: a double scoop of ice cream in homemade waffle cones.

Some communities are lucky enough to have a local coffee roaster. Summerland has two. As a result, café life here is vibrant and friendly. Enjoy a latte while you dig into Dutch apple cake, or sip a dark roast with your pulled pork sandwich with espresso BBQ sauce.

www.tourismsummerland.com 13

Looking for something a little different for your reunion or wedding? Summerland’s caterers have built their reputations on creative food experiences. Why not hit the beach for an east-meets-west lobster feast? Or push the boat out – literally. Hire a pontoon boat and sit back while our local “extreme caterer” prepares you a fabulous meal on deck.

Treat yourself to a night out at Local Lounge • Grille, a repeat winner of B.C.’s best wine list. While you order you’ll read how far away the restaurant is from each winery, so you can plan the next day’s tasting route.

Do breakfast right. Whether it’s Saturday eggs benny or a delicious organic croissant, we love our mornings, especially with extra coffee.

String tied parcels are piled on the wooden platform and a woman in a long-skirted traveling costume is hurrying to her seat. All the while the conductor is urging passengers to “climb aboard”! It’s all part of a magical bygone era of riding the rails.

Relive it on the historic Kettle Valley Steam Railway behind the 100 year old 3716 engine - e “Spirit of Summerland” as you ride through the Okanagan countryside. It’s a dizzying view when you venture out onto the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge and gaze down 238ft to the canyon floor. And if you’re travelling on one of the Great Train Robbery trips, be prepared for gunslingers on horses to surround the train and demand your fortune.

Looking for a quieter escape? Take the time to experience the Summerland Ornamental Gardens. Created by Agriculture Canada in 1916, this 16-acre public garden is located on the grounds of the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre. Maintained by the Friends of the Gardens

www.tourismsummerland.com 19

Society, this oasis is perfect for a relaxing stroll, an informative garden tour or the loveliest outdoor wedding.

No visit to Summerland is complete without stopping at Summerland Sweets, a family owned and operated business that’s been making delicious fruit based products since the 1950’s. You can sample and take home their jams, jellies, syrups and wines. en spend a lazy afternoon on their patio with an enormous ice cream.

Still have a bit of time? Car lovers can pay a visit to the Okanagan’s only classic car showroom at Nixdorf Classic Cars and if you’re travelling with family don’t forget to stop at the oldest continually running trout hatchery in B.C. Tour the Summerland Trout Hatchery and learn the best places to fish in the area.

At the Summerland Museum on Wharton Street, “the spirit of our pioneers comes alive.” You’ll learn how Okanagan First Nations first inhabited the area around Summerland more than 6,000 years ago, and how beauty and opportunity later drew settlers and fur traders to the region. Discover how those early pioneers lived and how the fruit packing houses of the 1930’s drove the burgeoning economy. Follow the expansion of railroads in B.C.’s west with the museum’s extensive collection on the historic Kettle Valley Steam Railway.

Stories of the fur traders and entrepreneurs and of Summerland’s early agricultural history are told on a dozen painted murals that adorn our downtown buildings.

Just as wine touring has become a popular pastime, touring Summerland’s many art studios is a great way to give yourself a dose of creativity. Drive our winding roads to meet with a wood carver, spend time with a clothing designer, chat with a watercolourist, and find a new favourite stoneware piece from a local potter.

www.tourismsummerland.com 21

Many of our studios are open year-round, with many more open by appointment. Twice a year the studios get together to host weekend-long open house events. We challenge you to try to visit them all!

At the heart of Summerland’s art scene is the Summerland Art Gallery and Center, located downtown on Main Street. e Art Gallery hosts regularly changing shows of BC artists, and an amazing Summer Arts Program for Kids, ages 3 – 13.

If you’re visiting Summerland in the early spring, take part in the annual tradition of painting one of the banners that will be hung around the community from May to October.

From literary events including book launches and author readings, to art show openings and the annual Arts and Culture Week celebration, Summerland has no shortage of cultural events to choose from.

Visit www.tourismsummerland.com for a full list of local galleries and studio tour details.

MarketsBaskets piled with fresh produce and the juiciest tree fruits remind you that you’re in Summerland, the heart of agriculture in the Okanagan.

Summer in the Okanagan is all about abundance. And nothing says that better than every type of fresh fruit and vegetable from the market. e world’s most popular cherry – the Sweetheart – as well as multiple award winning apple varietals all come from the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre right here in Summerland. It’s easy to find varieties of apples that aren’t available anywhere else, so head to a local

market and start picking out your favorites. e cherries are sweet and the apricots taste like sunshine. Here’s a tip: wear something tie-dyed. e juices running off your chin will blend in better!

Outdoor AdventureAction or relaxation… whatever your passion, Summerland has the outdoor opportunity for you.

In Summerland, when it comes to recreational opportunities, we’re spoiled for choice.

In the cool morning air you could play a game of tennis at Powell Beach; your ball making that satisfying ‘thwack’ as it hits your racquet in the quiet park.

Or maybe you’d enjoy a game of golf? e Sumac Ridge Golf Club and the

Summerland Golf and Country Club both offer one of the longest golf seasons in Canada and beautiful, well groomed greens with spectacular views.

When the day warms up it will be time to get your boat in the lake and head on out. Didn’t bring your own boat? You can rent power boats, seadoos, canoes, kayaks, paddle boards and pedal boats down at the

Now what to do in the evening? Fishing off the dock… a trail ride up at the rodeo grounds? Or maybe a relaxing beach front fire as you watch the sun go down.

Hmm . . . tough choices. Sorry for making you think so hard on your vacation.

Page 37: Summerland BC 2014 Visitor Guide

Walk through the iron gates of Giant’s Head Mountain Park on a beautiful day and begin the winding ascent up Summerland’s striking landmark. Looming 845 meters above the town, the ancient face of the giant has been surveying the surroundings for thousands of years. Leaving the quiet road near the summit, you can take the steep Confederation Trail or the more relaxing Centennial trail. Whichever you choose, the journey is worth the panoramic views from the top.

For hikers and cyclists the Trans Canada/KVR trail can’t be beat. e Summerland portion of the trail covers 61 kms between Penticton and Osprey Lake and features four bridges, including the KVR’s highest, the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge. Remember to pause and take in the best views of Trout Creek canyon, more than 70 meters below.

www.tourismsummerland.com 37

If intensity is your favorite way to relax, we’ve got you covered there as well. Not for the faint of heart, the new Giant’s Head Grind in May will take you on a 4 km climb from the beach to the top of the mountain. For cyclists, bring your mountain bike to the Test of Humanity race in September where cyclists of every ability have a chance to race as well as support an amazing cause.

Whether you’re looking for marked trails or the serendipity of meandering roads with views of orchards or lakes, hikers and bikers will be delighted with all the options.

For complete trail information drop by the Visitor Centre or check out www.tourismsummerland.com.

BeachesOn a perfect summer day, Summerland has a beach to suit your mood.

Eric Simard/TOTA/SCC

Page 41: Summerland BC 2014 Visitor Guide

With a lake like ours right outside the door, you know the beaches and water life are going to be fantastic. If the sun is shining you can pack a picnic and make a day of it. e only big question is ‘which beach do I want to go to today’?

Do you want great people watching opportunities, a long walk in the sand with someone special, water sport rentals, lots of picnic and barbeque space and great concession food? Choose Sun-Oka Provincial Park at the southern most edge of town.

Would you rather have a quieter option with a stroll to a pretty lighthouse and great views of the clay banks across the lake? en head to the local’s favorite – Powell Beach in the Trout Creek neighborhood.

Kids and teens find their fun in the Lower Town area of Summerland. Great docks make for lots of jumping and splashing. Ample sand castle material, change room facilities and an outdoor shower can all be found at Gordon Beggs Rotary Beach.

www.tourismsummerland.com 41

e historic Kiwanis Walking Pier is nearby. (is is also the best after-dark beach option when you just need to cool off!)

If your family has some four-legged members, take a stroll along the beach walking path to the Summerland Dog Beach. Rover can play and make friends with other dogs and you can relax at a picnic table between games of throw-the-stick.

Walk a little further and you’ll be at the spacious Peach Orchard Beach and Park where you’ll find a fantastic playground and the best spray park in the Okanagan. Your kids (and you!) will love it. Much of Lower Town is linked via the walking path from the boat launch at Peach Orchard Park south to the Summerland Waterfront Resort. It’s a great option for a relaxing walk any time of the day or evening.

For more beach options drop by the Visitor Centre or visit www.tourismsummerland.com.

Festivals & EventsName a season and we’ve got a festival to match. In Summerland it’s easy to find a reason to celebrate.

Mathieu Warnet-Pelletier

Page 51: Summerland BC 2014 Visitor Guide

Summerland’s calendar is so stuffed full of great events, there is something for every interest, whether you’re looking for inspiration, a new challenge, or a memorable day out.

Festival of Lights: On the last Friday in November, Summerland hosts the Okanagan’s oldest and most extravagant welcome to the Christmas season. Prepare for five very hectic hours of food, ice carving, fireworks and more.

Adrenaline Junkies: Cyclists should mark their calendars for events like Granfondo and Test of Humanity. Racers can register for the Giant’s Head Run, the UltraMan Canada competition, the Summerland ORCA Sprint and the Kids of Steel Sprint and Triathlon, or North America’s oldest freeride longboard competition. e new Giant’s Head Grind Race involves racing 4 kilometres from “beach to peak.”

Family Fun: Action Fest weekend in June has something for the whole family, including a parade, a slo-pitch tournament, live music and games galore in the park.

Outdoor Adventure: Love the outdoors without all the racing around? Check out Earth Week in April, the Meadow Lark Festival in May and the Kids Fishing Derby in June.

www.tourismsummerland.com 51

Arts and Culture: Tour our galleries and take part in creative events during Arts and Culture Week in April. For music lovers, the annual Bluegrass Festival in June is one you won’t want to miss.

Food and Wine: Wine lovers can take in Spring and Fall Wine Festivals, Heard It rough e Grapevine in June and Light Up e Vines in November.

September brings Summerland’s annual Fall Fair. For more than 100 years locals have gathered to compete in baking, preserving and growing. Bring the children to take part in the hands-on heritage displays.

Train spotters: Our famous train, the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, runs from mid-May with their regular schedule and offers speciality rides for Easter, Mother’s and Father’s Day, and Christmas. Don’t miss the chance to book a ticket for one of the Great Train Robbery & BBQ events.

Described in the early 1900’s as “heaven on earth with summer weather forever,” Summerland’s climate and picturesque surroundings continue to entice people to move here.

Business people come for our entrepreneurial spirit, new developments, committed local government, a great employee pool and proximity to larger centres, airports and universities.

Families come for excellent schools, great parks and friendly neighbours, every type of sports program and amazing festivals throughout the year.

Live HereThose of us who live in Summerland know that it’s not only the best community in the Okanagan, it’s a state of mind.

Retirees enjoy our dedicated service clubs, welcoming churches, a strong volunteer ethic and a variety of cultural options.

And we all enjoy numerous well maintained hiking and biking trails, stunning beaches and access to the best produce and organic breads and meats all crafted within a few miles of home.

We hope you’ll download our new Relocation Guide at www.summerlandchamber.com and see for yourself. We believe you’ll want to live here too!
