College Twilight Festival: – Wodonga Campus, Friday, 16 October 2015 It was fantastic to see so many people at last week’s Twilight Festival at our Wodonga campus. Although it was warm and humid, we were really very lucky with the weather, given that at one point the forecast was for storms and a top temperature of 35 degrees! The Festival had a lovely feel to it and I enjoyed talking with so many people as I made my way around the stalls and listening to our students perform. A lot of time and effort goes into preparing and presenting an event like this, and I do wish to thank and acknowledge a few people in particular for their work in this regard. Firstly, I wish to thank all of the parents who agreed to set up and run a stall or activity as part of the Festival; your enthusiastic and generous support is very much appreciated and adds significantly to the success of these gatherings. I wish to acknowledge our student performers and helpers who on the evening ensured that our focus was on our students, as it should be in a school! Thanks to Mr Brett Spokes, Mr James Eggleston and Mr Glenn Mancer for their work in organising the student performances! Thanks to all the staff from both campuses of the College who contributed to the Festival via stalls and activities – again, your support is gratefully appreciated! I wish to thank the College’s Grounds and Facilities staff for their tireless work in the days leading up to the event – preparing the grounds and setting up stalls – the venue looked fantastic and the preparation work was fantastic! In particular, I thank Mr Lynton Parker, the College’s Facilities Manager for his tremendous work in this context!

Finally, I wish to thank Mrs Karen Phillips who really did the lion’s share of the organisation and preparation! Thanks, Karen for coordinating the Festival so well, for liaising with external suppliers, for communicating with parent volunteers and for coordinating staff to assist on the day! You did a great job and I am really grateful for all that you did in relation to this year’s Festival! Next year, the Festival will be held at the Albury campus two weeks into Term 4. I am sure that this event will be as successful as this year’s and I will look forward to seeing lots of people there in October 2016!

Appointment of College Chaplain - 2016 I am delighted to advise the College community of the appointment of Canon Bryn Jones to the important position of Chaplain from the commencement of the 2016 school year. Rev’d Bryn was of course, Chaplain at Trinity until half way through 2011 and then left to take up a parish in Bendigo. After four years of serving his parish, Rev’d Bryn was keen to pursue the role of Chaplain at the College when he heard that Rev’d Lee Weissel had resigned to take up a Chaplain’s position at another school. After a number of conversations and obtaining the approvals of the Bishop of Wangaratta and the Archbishop of Perth, I am pleased to say that Bryn’s appointment has been finalised in recent weeks! For those who remember Rev’d Bryn, I am sure that you will be as pleased as me with this outcome and announcement! Rev’d Bryn will be very welcome as our new Chaplain when he returns to the College next year! In my career I have worked with many Chaplains in a number of schools and I would suggest that Bryn Jones is certainly one of the most effective Chaplains I have ever worked with. In 2010, Bryn was awarded the Matthew McInnes Award for his work with youth by the Bishop of Wangaratta. Bryn is very well qualified with an Honours degree in English Literature, a degree in Theology (he also won the Flinders University prize for Theology), a Bachelor of Education and a Diploma in Pastoral Studies.


End of Year Exams: Years 7 - 10 Over the weekend I was doing some work and looking through my calendar to get a few things organised. It appears that yet again the term is slipping away and will be over before we realise! One important period of time which is coming up very quickly will occur during Week 6 (the week commencing Monday, 9 November) and this is of course, the end of year exams for all students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. These exams form a very important part of the assessment of students in these year levels to end the year and I trust that all students in Years 7 – 10 have commenced their preparation for the exams. I would recommend that students begin by talking with each of their teachers about the up-coming exams – what units of work will be covered in the exam (and what won’t be covered); what is the format of the exam; how long is it; what am I allowed to bring into the exam (calculators, any notes?); how much weighting will be given to the exam in relation to my end of term assessment and report; and how would you recommend I go about revising the work? These are important conversations as they should help students understand the exam and therefore assist with their revision and preparation. Over the next couple of weeks in the lead up to the exams, all students in Years 7 – 10 should be undertaking regular revision in preparation for their exams. I wish all students the very best as they prepare for the exams! World Teachers’ Day Early in October World Teachers’ Day marks the work of teachers around the world. UNESCO established this day in 1994 to remind us that the role of a teacher is very significant in terms of educating young people who will contribute positively to society in their adult lives. I believe that Trinity has outstanding teachers and I take this opportunity to acknowledge the professionalism and commitment that they display to their students and to the mission of the College so often. Perhaps students could find a time to thank their teachers for the work that they do with them? I know that a word of thanks from students has a huge impact and goes a long way to making all of that work seem very worthwhile for teachers! Later this month, I plan to put on a morning tea for all teachers at the College and to thank them for their energy, their drive, their commitment and their professionalism! Staff News I am pleased to announce that Mr Stephen Kilgour and his wife, Katrina, are the very proud parents of Sophie, who arrived happily and safely on Monday, 5 October. On behalf of the College community, I congratulate Mr and Mrs Kilgour and hope that all is going well for the family.


Whooping cough information for schools There is an outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) in NSW, mainly affecting school-aged children. Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Whooping cough can spread to anyone at home, including younger brothers and sisters. Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for babies. Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. The infection can occur even in fully-vaccinated children. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and may be worse at night.

Children with these symptoms should see a doctor.

If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough in your school-aged child, please let the school know and keep your child at home until they have taken 5 days of antibiotics. Keep coughing children away from babies.

Whooping cough vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades with time. Check that all your children are up to date with their vaccines, due at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 4 years and 12 years of age (offered to all Year 7 students through the NSW school-based vaccination program). A booster is also recommended at 18 months of age.

A booster dose of vaccine is also recommended for adults that are in contact with young

children, such as school staff and parents. Pregnant women are recommended to have a

booster dose during each pregnancy and this is funded by NSW Health. Those who are new

parents or carers of babies should consult their general practitioner about appropriate

immunisation.

focus of their exams and the material that they need to revise. During the examination

period, students must remember to bring study materials to school as there is time built

into the study timetable for some revision.

Year 11: HSC Assessment Information

Year 11 students have received the important policy document ‘Year 12 Assessment

Information for Students, 2016.’ This document outlines the policies and procedures

regarding the completion and submission of assessment tasks for HSC courses. It is

important that students are fully au fait with this material and adhere to the processes

outlined.


Assessment schedules for all subjects have been distributed and students have received an

advice that details the due dates for all assessment tasks. This is an important planning tool

that will allow students to allocate the appropriate amount of time to prepare, draft and

seek feedback so that assessment tasks are completed to the best of their ability.

Year 11 HSC Information Evening for Students and Parents – Tuesday 11 November, 2014

Mr Thomas and I will be hosting an information session for all Year 11 students and their

parents from 7pm on Tuesday 10 November. We will be focusing on the ways that students’

assessment marks and exam performances combine to produce HSC marks and on the sorts

of processes that students and parents can implement at home in order to maximise HSC

success. We look forward to seeing as many students and parents as possible.

Learning is an emotional business. It is important to recognise the paramount place that our

emotions have when we are learning. Sometimes it is easy to say, “Well, just get on with it

and learn. No need to moan about it.” I know that these words probably were spoken in our

house at some stage.

As a parent it is always a delight to witness the pleasure that our children gain when learning

is a positive, challenging and fulfilling experience. So we need to ensure that we nurture

positive values. It is quite easy to justify negative approaches. “Well, Maths was never my

strong point.” A positive methodology involves setting a target for your child with their own

learning. Make the target clear and concise with no tangible reward other than the actual

achievement of the goal. In some recent research that focused on the improvement in

learning the findings suggested that this approach, and the ownership the student has of

this approach evokes a positive emotional response, even if the target is not fully realised.

As we continue with a busy term the heat has had an effect on many students already. It is

important that we cover up where possible (sunscreen and hats) and remain hydrated.

K-2 Swimming

All students from K-2 have now taken part in the swimming program. There has been some

wonderful feedback from students and staff about the involvement and general

improvement. This is an essential skill in our community, given the length of summer. We

are all looking forward to the Carnival on Thursday, 29 October.

Poet Performance

The Year 5 and 6 classes enjoyed a session with Steven Herrick, an Australian performance

poet. It was very entertaining and raised awareness about this wonderful form of

communication.

Year 6 Initiative Skills Sessions

The Year 6 students took part in all manner of initiative games aimed at improving skills.

The day was a great success and the TAFE Wodonga students’ enthusiasm and professional

approach ensured a great day.

Stationery and Texts 2015

All is running along and the various companies are now quoting for the stationery and texts.

The stationery lists will be sent home with students. Much of the material will remain at

school for use in the classroom.

College Twilight Festival

Thanks to all students, parents and staff for a great evening. Particular thanks to the

performers on the day who kept us entertained.

This is probably taking place as you read the newsletter. It is a wonderful initiative and many

staff and parents have joined in with supervision.

Jack and the Jumping Beanstalk

All K-2 students will be attending a performance on Friday, 30 October.

Kindergarten 2015 Orientation mornings

These will take place in Week 5, with groups of students joining with the current

Kindergarten students to have a taste of a morning in the big school.


Camps

The Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 Camps take place in Week 6. Notes and information regarding

these were sent home with students earlier and if there are any concerns please contact

the College for clarification.

Twilight Festival

At the time of writing, proceeds from the Twilight Fair hadn’t been finalised, but thanks to

everyone who made such an effort to make the Fair a success. Thanks particularly to the

teaching staff at Wodonga who organised their Class Stalls, and to Albury Campus teachers

who came across to help. Thanks also to our wonderful band of parent helpers.

The Wodonga Campus grounds were looking a treat, a great testament to all those people

who helped, both for the Fair and in the preceding weeks.

Wonga Wetlands Excursions - NAIDOC Week

Students from P-6 Wodonga Campus enjoyed an excursion to Wonga Wetlands recently. It

was a chance for students to become more familiar with the cultural heritage of Aboriginal

people, in particular the local Wiradjuri, and to learn about the strong environmental links

the Aboriginal people have with the land.

The Wiradjuri Cultural and Education Centre features an Indigenous campsite established

by the local Wiradjuri people that helps visitors to better understand indigenous history and

culture. It is a working campsite, set out according to tradition, with areas for cooking,

sleeping, tool making and rock art, as well as a ceremony/dancing circle.

The students were be asked to sketch and write about the features of the camp site and

environmental studies. As a follow-up to the day, each class is in the process of designing

and painting a wooden panel that reflects the cultural and environmental heritage of the

Indigenous people. Once complete, the panels will be arranged together and then put on

display in the Hall.

Playground Improvements Our new Playground is ‘up and running’ and students are enjoying the challenges of new

equipment. We’ve had some blisters, and some bark grazes, but generally it has been

enthusiastically received. Thanks to the Trinity maintenance crew for their hard work in this

regard.

Special thanks must go to Lindsay Halligan for the outstanding renovation work he has done

on the set of picnic tables now in place on the playground. The “new” tables were launched

at the Twilight Fair.

Upper Hume Athletics

Congratulations to those students who represented Trinity Wodonga so successfully at the

Upper Hume Athletics over recent weeks. We had seven competitors who achieved some

stunning results. They included Jessica & Mark Baker, Tiahn & Ashton Myles, Jana Geerling,

Zac Reid, Georgia Stefaniak, Sam Chase, Emily Franolic, Darrah Andrews.

Four of those achieved outstanding results – Darrah Andrews (100m, 200m), Georgia

Stefaniak (1500m, High Jump), Ashton Myles (800m, 100m), and Tiahn Myles (200m).

These students will further represent the College at the next level. We know they will

Prep 2016 Information Night

We welcomed Prep families to the Wodonga Campus last week, at the Prep 2016

Information Evening. Thanks to Lydia for her fabulous briefing, and I know those parents

will already be feeling part of our Campus.

The Wodonga Children’s Fair

The Wodonga Children’s Fair is being held on Sunday, 25 October at Wodonga Racecourse,

10am-2:30pm. The College provides a manned stall for the day and this event is a major

enrolment function for the College. Should you be visiting the Fair do drop by. Special thanks

to the Year 5/6 students who are assisting with the Face Painting.

Bushfire Preparedness for Season 2015-2016

With the Bushfire Season upon us, this is a timely reminder about fire danger ratings and

warnings, introduced in Victoria last year to provide clearer directions on the safest options

for preserving life, particularly in a school situation.

Children’s services, and schools, identified as being at highest fire risk will be closed on days

declared by fire authorities to be Code Red. Our school has been identified as being one of

those at highest bushfire risk.

Where possible, we will provide parents with up to three days’ notice of a planned closure.

We will contact you directly by letter or phone, with advice on planned closures and will

confirm the decision to close by 12:00 noon the day before the planned closure. Once

confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of improvements in the weather

forecast.

For those living in a bushfire prone area, when Code Red days are forecast, the safest option

is to leave the night before, or early in the morning of the Code Red day. On all days of high

fire risk, children should never be left at home in the care of older children.

As part of preparing our facility for the threat of fire, we have completed the Department

of Education and Early Childhood Development’s self-assessment of our emergency

preparedness. We have also updated our Emergency Management Plan. Parents should be

familiar with the details of the School’s Emergency Preparedness Policy & Procedure for the

2015-2016 bushfire season. A parent meeting was held on Tuesday, 20 October to outline

the Campus’ bushfire readiness plan, but anyone wanting to know more about the Plan can

contact the school for details.

Parents should ensure their family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes

alternative care arrangements in the event that our facility is closed. Make sure the School

has a record of your current contact details, including your mobile phone numbers. Talk to

your children about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan.

Urgent Announcement Regarding Victorian Public Holiday

The Victorian Government have declared Friday, 27 November (Wodonga Cup Day) as the

Gazetted Public Holiday for this area of the State. This date now replaces the previously

declared Public Holiday on Melbourne Cup Day.

Victorian school buses operate as normal on Tuesday, 3 November, but WILL NOT run on

Friday, 27 November 2015.

Access to school is vital and, for this reason, it has been determined that the Wodonga

Campus WILL BE OPEN on Tuesday, 3 November, but WILL BE CLOSED on Friday, 27

November.

I fully realise that this departure from what is recorded on the School Calendar will be

inconvenient for many people. I sincerely apologise for that. Should you have any queries,

please do not hesitate to contact the office.

NSW Secondary All Schools Athletics Congratulations to Luke Davis and Montanna Schollick in their recent efforts at the NSW All School Athletics Championships. This competition is open to all educational sectors from within NSW. Congratulations to Luke who finished fifth in the Under 16s Triple Jump and Montanna who finished fourth in the Open Shot put; a wonderful effort against the top athletes across the State.

BISSA Gala Waterpolo Day Trinity was well represented in the BISSA Gala waterpolo day, contested on Wednesday, 21 October at the Albury Swim Centre. The College has many up-and-coming waterpolo players who demonstrated their enthusiasm throughout their three games.

Both teams were well led by our Senior students, with Jacob Pargeter taking on the role of playing centre forward and setting up many of our speedy Year 8 students. Jacob found the back of the net multiple times throughout all games and the scoreboard also ticked along nicely from the hard work of Sam Cavanough and Will Edgar.

Throughout the day, many of the College boys sort revenge by volunteering to defend our goals. This role was shared between Bailey Waters, Leighton Coe and Kyle Magee. Bailey’s propeller like egg-beater ensured very few goals crossed the line, while Leighton’s and Kyle’s height was definitely advantageous. The boys went on to win two of their three games; an admirable result against some difficult competition.

The girls had three difficult games against two Xavier High School teams and a Mater Dai team. Fortunately, we had a full bench, which was rotated quickly to keep up with the speed of our more experienced opponents. Throughout the games the Trinity team improved remarkably, taking on the advice of their coach and playing to their strengths. Morgan Mamouney was heavily marked, however, was able to find the back of the net consistently throughout the day. Well-done to all students! All games were played in good spirits, making it an enjoyable day to be a part of. No doubt the College team will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future.

Southern Sports Academy - Waterpolo The Academy is now calling for nominations for its 2016 Waterpolo Program. The selection criteria for waterpolo is fully outlined on the Academy’s web page www.ssa-nsw.org.au.

All scholarship holders will participate in an ongoing program of intensive coaching covering all aspects of their sport. This program will include specific workshops in practical skill training, fitness testing, strength and conditioning advice, nutrition and hydration principles, recovery strategies and sports medicine advice.

Athletes will also attend personal development workshops designed to assist them with issues off the sporting field.

Language Perfect as a tool for revision for French Exams

As all students from years 7 – 10 work on their French revision, a reminder that the Language

Perfect programme is a useful aid to study. Computers are available in the library and the

French Room for students who have problems accessing computers at home.

DELF Exams

A reminder to students who have enrolled in the DELF exams that tutorials run on

Wednesdays and Thursdays after school until the exams on 7 November.

Last Thursday, 15 October saw the Trinity Years 3-6 Creative Pursuits Activities return for

Term 4.

Activities covered this term are tennis, conducted by local tennis coach Garth Quast, cricket

by staff of NSW cricket, dance with local dance instructor Kimberly Crowther, cooking with

Miss Short, sphero golf with Mr Parkin, triathlon with Mr Stevens, photography with Mrs

Moffat and swimming (Year 5s) with Mr Hillary and Ms Vanegmond.

“Dance made me feel free to let my skills roam and the teacher helped me feel free to dance

like no one was watching.” Savannah Fagence.

“Sphero Golf is fun. You get to use sphero balls. My favourite part was learning how to

control the ball with the iPad.” Josh Davidovic.

“Triathlons are really fun when it’s a hot day. You get to warm up with a short run then when

you’re boiling, you then jump in the pool to practise swimming. If you like swimming riding

and running, this is your sport.” Lachie Elgin.

“The cricket in this term’s Creative Pursuits was amazing because the people that run it are

teaching me how to play the sport. My favourite part about it was everything.” Jun Yang Lin.

“In photography we learnt about all the different types of cameras and different ways to

take a great photo. One of the ways to take a photo was called ‘The Golden Mean.’” Lindsay

“We made freshly squeezed orange juice and fruit kebabs with Greek dipping yoghurt. Did

you know that store bought orange juice has a lot of sugar? Why not try your own? All you

The students in 1MC last week excitedly welcomed the arrival of our classroom incubator,

which is incubating 48 fertilised chicken eggs. Students have been learning about chicken

embryo development and the lifecycle of a chicken. We have been reading books about

chickens, brainstorming what we know about chickens and making chicken themed craft.

Last week we candled the eggs to see which eggs had chicks developing inside. Candling the

eggs involves holding a bright torch against the side of each egg in a dark room and looking

for changes to the chicks developing inside the eggs. Inside the fertilised eggs we observed

veins, a heartbeat and an air sac. Each day we look at our classroom posters to see what the

chick embryos inside the egg look like. The incubation period is 21 days and the class is

eagerly counting down the days until hatching day.

Each student has made a prediction of how many eggs they think will hatch, with the student

who guesses correctly winning a prize.

The new group of Toastmasters convened this week and elected a President, Alex Thurling,

a Secretary, Laura Chase, and a Sergeant-at-Arms, Ewan Noonan.

This group, like the others from Year 9 throughout the year, will learn the skills of running a

meeting, giving a prepared speech in public, evaluating the speeches of others, and speaking

impromptu. These valuable skills are part of the Toastmasters International Leadership

Training course kindly run for us by Carmel McCartin and her colleagues from the Thurgoona

branch. We are very grateful for their time and energy as we build skills.

Monday, 16 November is the date of the annual Trinity Toastmasters Speech Competition.

The inaugural Albury/Wodonga Model United Nations competition took place on Friday, 11 September, with students from Years 9 and 10 competing. Participants were given the opportunity to act as delegates to the United Nations Security Council, debating and passing (or blocking) resolutions. The students who chose to be involved did a fantastic job and learned a lot about the function and processes of the United Nations as a result. Zoe Twist and Ruby Kearney particularly impressed the judges and were selected for the next round of the competition, which was held in Canberra on Saturday, 26 September. They reported the following: After competing in the regional Evatt Model UN competition held at Trinity, we were given the opportunity to attend the ACT Grand Final. Conveniently enough, this was held in Canberra, which called for a few last minute travel arrangements. On the 26th of September, we arrived at the Australian National University for a day of intense debate. On arrival, we realised that we were both the youngest and the most inexperienced team. Nevertheless, it was an amazing experience that we both learnt a lot from. With this new found knowledge, we hope to return to the competition next year with a cutting edge. We would like to thank Mr. Kilgour and the Evatt UN Youth ACT for organising the event and allowing us to take part.
