I would like to take this opportunity to thank the School community for producing yet another great MiMs weekend. In particular, I would like to thank all the boys for their tremendous resilience, dedication and professionalism during the preparation and the event itself. We

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE HEAD

MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE HEAD

I trust that all the parents received my email with reference to one or two concerns that were expressed to the DPA chair. I will be monitoring these issues until next week, after which Mr Anton Redelinghuys, who has been appraised of them as my interim successor, will continue the process.

With me retiring from education and DBCS next week, I have had time to reflect on the past few years in the ‘hot seat’. It has been a rollercoaster for me personally, with definite highs and the odd low. The lows are easy to identify and have thankfully been infrequent, but I certainly have many a high note at Drakies to remember. The fiftieth year has been a very good year, with great contributions at MiMs, a very successful Japan tour, Starlight Classics and the formation of the calendar for 2018 and 2019. My final duty as Head of the school will be listening to the boys sing at the Johannesburg Golf Day in Johannesburg, which is always great fun.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the board, boys, parent body and staff for their support and dedication in uplifting the Choir School once again to an excellent standard. I would like to wish the new headmaster and his team all the very best in continuing the good work done over the past five years, and to keep the name of the DBCS at the required level, encompassing the best boy choir on the planet.

I leave you with this quote, “Strive for progress, not perfection”.

SCIENCE FUN

This term, the different grades were tasked with building different projects for Science. The Grade 4’s were to build their own musical instrument and explain the input and output energy for their instrument. The Grade 5’s were to build their own simple circuit, explaining how electricity flows through it. The Grade 6’s were to build a slightly more complex circuit, which included a motor to show an output energy of movement. Finally, the Grade 7’s were to build their very own solar ovens, to show how radiation is used as a form of heat transfers.

The ink had barely dried on my Take Note contribution last week when the soccer crowd started to roll in. Yes – you read correctly about the ink. I always write the first draft of Snippets in longhand in real pen and ink. On real paper. You might have noticed that I am quite into real stuff (as compared to virtual goods and soft copy). I did recently upgrade from quill to ballpoint in an effort to move with the times, though. But back to soccer injuries. One would think that I would know never to write about quiet San sessions and a dearth of injuries. Without fail, it triggers a subsequent deluge of patients. This is despite the precaution of routinely touching wood. I will try touching plastic in future.

Fortunately, most of the soccer traumas were of a minor nature. However, one right wrist was of concern, and I pondered deeply. Decisions on whether to send a boy to an x-ray facility are not made lightly in our neck of the woods. This gave me reason to call in the dishy Dr Stroh to assess the situation. Dr Stroh examined the wrist extensively – with much writhing from the attached boy – and also pondered deeply. Practicing Bush Medicine does take some hard thinking before treatment options are decided. Exceptions are made in cases where the patient requires CPR or is spraying bright red blood all over the place. Then we move quite fast.

Ultimately, no x-rays were done and the arm is healing nicely.

An interesting little dynamic appears to have popped up on campus recently. We are all aware of the grumbles about menus and unattractive meals. Well, it seems that our delightful young choristers are on a mission of some sort. On Monday morning, a young chap collecting his meds asked if he could use the lavatory in the Sickbay. Being somewhat possessive of my facilities, I eyed him sternly, explaining that its use was reserved for inmates – I mean patients. He insisted that he needed to urinate urgently. This was despite the fact that he had already been out of bed for 41 minutes and would have had adequate time to pass water before exiting Griffin House three minutes previously. Perhaps he also forgot to wash his face and brush his teeth.

Anyway, I gave in and off he went to the loo. After ambling back into the San, the lad announced that my bathroom requires refurbishing. I went back to the offending room with him for a site inspection. I agreed that the bath could do with some re-enameling but pointed out that the amenity is otherwise positively luxurious by DBCS standards. This was acknowledged. As we walked back through the Sickbay, his eyes darted about, absorbing every detail. “Why,” he asked, “do two of the beds not have duvets?” I told him that little guys in Tungay may bring their own duvets and pillows when admitted.

I returned to the San feeling slightly battered and wondering whether my humble facilities had passed the critical assessment. It was tempting to ask what I had scored out of ten.

The sad truth is that anyone who looks hard enough for problems in life will certainly find them. Interesting times, indeed.
