22 Days to Earth Day: Activity 1

How to Make a Wind Chime from Old Silverware

April is a great month to create yard art! Wind chimes can blow in the April breezes, bringing

healing effects on our bodies from the different tones, while vibrations can release stress and

emotional tensions.

This activity is appropriate for ages 14 and up.

Step 1: Gather your material

Tools needed will include a drill with a set of bits, pliers, a heavy duty needle nose pliers and

fishing line.

You will need 6 pieces of silverware, at least 1 of which must be a fork. Forks and spoons work

the best.

Step 2: Prepare the fork that will be your hanger. Drill a hole near the end of the handle and

one near the tines of the fork. This is where the middle hammer will hang.

Use your pliers to bend each tine until they are at a 90 degree angle to the fork's handle. Finally,

curl the end of each tine so that the fishing line can be looped through it. Use your needle-nose

pliers to grab the end of each tine and wrap it back on itself until it forms a small loop.

Step 3:

Drill holes in each remaining piece of silverware so that they can be hung. Only 1 hole

needs to be drilled in each of the 5 additional pieces of silverware. You may want to secure the

silverware with a C-clamp when drilling.

Step 4:

To begin assembling the wind chimes, cut 5 pieces of fishing line to the length that you want

the lower pieces of silverware to hang. Carefully tie the end of each piece of fishing line, using

the Clinch Knot technique (see below) to the hole in each lower piece of silverware.

You can add beads or any bling before you tie the knot. Then you can add a small amount of

glue to secure fishing line at the fork’s tine.

Step 5: The fifth piece of silverware should be tied to the hole you drilled in the broad part of the

central fork. This will be the hammer.

Step 6: Now, the 5 lower pieces of silverware should be hanging from the centerpiece fork

above. The only remaining step is to tie a piece of fishing line through the hole in the handle of

the central fork. You can secure the top of the fishing line with a “S” hook. Hang the entire set

of wind chimes from your desired location.
