Sponsored by Businesses

and Recreation OrganizationsBy Del Albright

On June 13, 2004, 16 recreational leadersfrom throughout the country graduated fromthe first and only-of-its kind Trail Leader &Land Stewardship (TLLS) Workshop at IceHouse Resort, CA. One of our graduates, DougBarr from Nevada, said, “The four days in thisclass will change the way I interact with people forthe rest of my life.”

Geared towards making better leaders outof volunteers, the workshop taught a lot of the“big picture” of land stewardship so thestudents could pass along this knowledge totheir clubs and associations. Mike Overmeyer, past President and current EnvironmentalAffairs Officer for the Pirates of the Rubiconsummed up his feelings this way, “I am nowready to make a real difference in the fight tokeep our trails open.”

Most significant about this workshop wasthe fact the entire session was sponsored bybusinesses and recreation organizations whofully understand the need for more volunteerleaders in all sports. This unique blending ofrecreation oriented businesses and organizedrecreation groups is precedent-setting in theworld of recreational sports, especiallymotorized recreation. The following made itpossible for every student to attend thisworkshop cost free:

BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC)California Association of Four Wheel Drive

Clubs (CA4WDC)United Four Wheel Drive Associations

(UFWDA)California Off Road Vehicle Association

(CORVA)Off Road Business Association (ORBA)Rubicon4x4.Com

Bob Reed, President of CA4WDC, and JohnStewart of United FWDA and CA4WDC, wereimmediately supportive of getting more leaders

trained in their organizations. “We are placedin positions of leadership, such as the Board ofDirectors for an Association, with little or nobackground or training – just a desire to do agood job. This training is just the start ofgetting more volunteers willing to step up andlead our efforts,” Bob noted.

Students were taught subjects that includedbasic supervision, human communications andinteractions, meeting management, planningand visualization techniques, public speaking, dealing with bureaucracy, NEPA, environmentalstewardship and planning, erosion control, andmeeting facilitation among other topics. Theprimary goals of the course were to produce agraduate with new skills in these areas:

• Facilitate individual and club issues as wellas meetings.

• Know how to prepare and give a speech.

• Understand the big picture of landmanagement and be able to share thatknowledge with others.

• Act as a supervisor of volunteers in anygiven situation.

• Be able to plan any event, meeting, trailride, or conference.

• Be more facilitative in confrontationalsettings.

• Have the skills to act as a train-the-trainerfor land stewardship and leadership.

Unprecedented Leadership Training

• Be able to set the example for other trailusers and recreationists.

• Be qualified to step up to the plate and leadother volunteers to victory!

Jeff Stevens, Red Rock 4Wheelers, fromUtah made this statement, “(I learned) somegreat techniques and tips that I had neverbefore considered. I plan to use some of thesein upcoming club meetings and committees.”Dan Peterson, CORVA, of California said, “I dobelieve the sponsors got their money’s worth. This program is vital to motorized recreationon public lands.”

There was a mix of students in the class;two from Utah, one from Nevada, one fromConnecticut, and the remainder fromCalifornia. Dan Stra, Jon Fund, came from backeast to add a new dimension to the workshopfull of mostly westerners, “I came here seekingknowledge and help for our issues in thenortheastern states. I found not only that, butalso camaraderie and friendships that will lastme a lifetime”, he said.

products to, because our opportunities areshrinking instead of growing.”

Other groups and organizations are doingvarious types of training and workshops; butuntil now, there has been no place for avolunteer to learn how to supervise, interactwith government, and facilitate conflict. Thefounding principle of this workshop is that thejob of a leader is to inspire, motivate andfacilitate. Called the Leadership Triangle, thesethree words drive the essence of what leadersdo. The graduates of this workshop are outthere doing just that, right now!

The BlueRibbon Coalition has alreadystarted making plans to continue this type ofleadership training for volunteers. Once thedetails are worked out, the information on howto sign up for future workshops will be postedon the BRC web site at www.sharetrails.org.

Stephen Zwerling of Boutilier’s Point, NS with a1970 SIIA 88

Jack Lancaster of Rcon4x4,www.rubicon4x4.com, was quick to become asponsor of the training, “We need more peopletrained to assume leadership roles or we’regoing to lose our opportunity to enjoy ourchosen sports,” Jack commented. Roy Dennerof the Off Road Business Association made thepoint very clear, “Without leaders teachingothers how to keep our trails and riding areasopen, businesses won’t have anyone to sell

Ottawa Valley Land Rovers — July 20048

This is the third in a multi-part series of articles byKevin Newell on the adventures of an oil burner.

(Voice of Bullwinkle) “Look! Nothing up mysleeve … presto, change-o” … a 300 Tdi fits!

In the previous installment, we heard aboutthe foibles of fitting the LT 77 gearbox to theseries chassis … and that I did in fact, wearglasses. (Oh! by the way, the fajita dinner was ahit).

Well (following where I left off last time) Istarted back at it the next day, Sunday, by noon.I had drilled and sleeved the holes for thetransfer case mounts too high and the rear propshaft will hit the cross member. So my optionsare to cut out part of the cross member andmodify the seat box or relocate the t-casemounts again. I let this clumsy mistake and itsrepercussions rest in the dark recesses of mymind for now and I moved on to something else.

I want to move onto something where I didn’tfeel I was doing it over, yet again. So I go on tothe front of the engine and decide to take on theplumbing. How will I hook up the rad, intercooler, power steering, oil cooler, fuel filterand the lot? With the Tdi in place I stare at it forabout an hour or two (I like to plan and then actin flurry of activity). I wander about the garage, holding and suspending various parts, pipes andhoses in place. Finally I rig the fascia, grille, rad, bumper and fenders in place (very precariously,no bolts just friction). My wife happens to comeinto the garage at this point and exclaims Wow!You’re almost done, I’m amazed! I smile, thankher, give her a kiss and go inside to get a cold

Moments later under the strain of a pint ofGuinness the fenders and bumper slump overlooking rather sad and disheveled (no bolts wereholding any of these panels together)

Upon my return to the garage I place my beeron the fender and the whole thing collapses, but!I knew what I was going to do. I disassemble thelump then go to work measuring and weldingbrackets, and other fixing stuff. Next I measureand fit hoses and pipes. I used an intercoolerelbow off a Saab 900 Turbo and joined it to theintercooler bottom pipe. The intercooler pipesnow clear the steering drop arm. The lowerintercooler hose now clears the series steeringrelay after I moved it to the opposite side of theintercooler. My wife comes back in and isastonished, “omigod! What happened?” Iexplain and all is well.

The transplanted heart fits!

I use a holesaw for the newlocation and hada friend aluminumweld a plate overthe old hole.

Monday morning I ‘m back at it and I realizethat the front end is sorted out and I musthumbly return to the transfer case alignmentissue. I decide to just weld on the mounts. Imeasure… again, and re-measure… again, andmark the frame… again, this time I’ll get it right! The welding will necessitate me pulling theengine and gearbox out one more time (but notall the way). I move it just enough to put in the

Notice how closethe turbo is to thesteering box anddrop arm.

gearbox mounts. I weld the mounts onto theframe and re-weld the welds twice to be sure justlike I did with the engine mounts.

By this point in time my nephew has beencoming by to help me out and we celebrate withhearty high five and a cold drink (Water that is!)It’s been 27 degrees for the past few days. Now Ihave to get the prop shafts custom cut (so they’llfit) 24-spline diffs and custom 24-spline innershafts with 10-spline outer half shafts and heavyduty Spicer U-joints for the front axle as well as24-spline for the rear. A quick call to Bill at GreatBasin Rovers and we discuss my plans then heships me the stuff FedEx. JL (the infamous Jean-Leon) has the diffs for me and all should cometogether by the weekend.

As I await the parts from Utah and for JL todeliver the diffs I figure how to fit the massive aircleaner under my, now very crowded, bonnet andstuffed engine bay. I had decided what to dowhen I was studying the (as my wife put it)“almost done” mock up. I need to move thewhole air cleaner assembly forward by abouteight inches. To save two of those inches I cutthe huge intake hose as it goes into the back ofthe air cleaner and where it meets the turbointake.

why I like to study and think about things thenhave at it! This job took three hours to get it justright but it took me just a few minutes to pictureit in mind’s eye.

air intake on top and not underneath asdesigned. This requires me to grind out the steelstraps that hold the can in place so they’ll fitaround the fresh air intake opening … as you

There is actually no space between thefirewall and the rubber intake hose on the left ofthis picture (it rests on the series bulk head). Inthe 1998 Defender 130 that my Tdi came fromthere is still several inches between the firewalland that same hose (which normally sits eightinches further aft compared to the position inthis picture).

It is Thursday and there are now only fivedays left to have Stan ready so I can go down toKansas to play at the Adventure Team Challenge.(I am beginning to have doubts that I will makeit). Kevin Willey and I had planned to get ourLand Rovers ready and go down again this yearand have some fun.

My nephew was supposed to be my co-driverbut, instead, has become my apprentice LandRover junky. I decide to not fret nor hurry andtake my time; Stan will not be ready for ATC2004. Kevin Willey and I pow-wow and we moveour timeline to be ready for the OVLR BirthdayParty two weeks hence. The enterprise nowtakes on a sense of calm and comfort rather thanhurried chaos … Still lots to do!

Next month shall be the final installment …Til then keep on Rovering!

I decide tokeep the bracketthat is bolted tothe engine (viathe head bolts)in the sameposition andinvert the aircleaner canisterto have the fresh
