MIPC AT A GLANCE
The McGill International Portfolio Challenge (MIPC) is the first international competition targeting innovative portfolio design and asset management. Led by a team of ambitious and diverse students, it is an initiative that bridges the disconnect between academia and finance industry practitioners. Paired with a mentorship program, recruitment and networking opportunities, and speaker series, the MIPC is truly a global forum that aims to share sustainable finance solutions with the broader community.
Throughout the course of four months, the MIPC offers opportunities for your firm to recruit students from the best universities in the world, to network with fellow finance practitioners and prospective clients, and to discover new solutions to issues that you face every day. We also provide opportunities to promote brand visibility among bright, young minds, as well as professors and other professionals from all around the world. Sustainable investing is a core pillar of the MIPC and being part of the challenge can allow you to elevate your firm’s brand. We hope that you see the tremendous value of participating in the challenge, as we do.W

KEY BENEFITS
Build relationships.
The MIPC, because of its strong
reputation, is able to attract dozens
of high-profile guests, such as
C-Suite executives, politicians, managing
directors, portfolio managers, and future leaders of society. We
offer a chance to start meaningful conversations.
63+ Past Universities
19Countries
90+Teams per Year
5Continents
Recruit top talent from aroud the
world.
The MIPC’s curated group of talented students from around the globe creates an
excellent pool of prospective applicants, not only for North
American offices, but international offices as well.
Strengthen your image.
We are a highly anticipated
challenge with increasing media
coverage in recent years. The MIPC
allows companies to show their
commitment to the societal issues
we tackle.
Draw inspiration
from students’ proposals.
Teams that participate in
MIPC bring diverse perspectives on
the issues we cover. Winning
proposals typically introduce highly
creative, new ideas that few in the industry have thought
of previously or evaluated in detail.
To continue ensuring the safety and well-being of all our stakeholders, we are planning to host MIPC’s fifth edition in 2021 in a virtual format. Here are some of the key opportunities that we provide in the months leading up to and during the competition:
• Diverse recruitment opportunities: We will hold recruitment activities throughout the two-month challenge, rather than just the “finals weekend,” to maximize our partners’ time to connect with students. We hold numerous events with our partners in a group setting, ranging from traditional recruiting sessions to more creative, thought-provoking events.
• Expedited recruitment timeline: In addition to the events throughout the two-month challenge, we are implementing for the first time an initiative to hold recruitment events as early as the summer in order to match the recruitment timeline of many top finance firms. We plan to leverage the full capabilities of our newly minted online platform to do so.
• Mentorship program: Returning to the MIPC this year, we offer a mentorship program for each of our semi-finalist teams. Each student team will be matched to a mentor from one of our partners, who will meet with them to give a review of their proposal. This is an excellent opportunity for your firm to offer professional advice to these students and share your expertise with the future leaders of tomorrow.
• Speaker series: Our Speaker series is composed of TED-style talks by senior leadership from many of our partners. Participants are able to engage with your company through live Q&A and small-group discussions on the topic at hand.
• Individual networking opportunities: In a variety of formats, students have the chance to engage with our partners on a one-on-one basis, helping them to form deep connections and fostering interest in your form. Additionally, the MIPC is an excellent opportunity for your firm to network with colleagues, peers, and potential clients as well.
• Panel discussion: Every year, we host a panel of C-Suite and other high-profile executives to engage the broader community on how finance can benefit society as a whole through the lens of institutional investors and of practitioners. Participants will get a chance to learn from leaders in institutional finance.
As the student leaders of the MIPC, we are very excited about the multitude of opportunities and value we are able to offer, supported by continued sponsor engagement. We hope you see the same as well!
Opportunities Beyond the Competition
Grace FrancoeurExecutive Director
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MIPC 2021?
GRAND CHALLENGES
Each year, the MIPC poses a grand challenge, our cases center on solving that pertinent issue through innovative portfolio strategies that satisfy the needs of a broad range of stakeholders. Hundreds of students from all over the world participate to solve complex societal issues in which large institutional investors play a critical role.
MIPC 2021 Grand ChallengeUltra Low YieldsFor the fifth edition of the MIPC, we want you to join us in exploring the Grand Challenge of ultra-low yield environments. For long-term asset managers, the combination of ultra-low interest rates and high valuations in equity and real estate markets around the world is creating a strenuous challenge. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, how can they design sustainable investment strategies that deliver adequate returns without taking on excessive amounts of risk?
Past Grand Challenges
2020: The Rise of Protectionism and Social InequalitiesWe are now seeing countries seeking independence as protectionist narratives are being revived and geo-economic dynamics are changing. How should long-term asset managers invest amid rising protectionism and social inequalities? Can we find innovative portfolio solutions that are both profitable and have a positive social impact?
2019: Climate ChangeClimate change is one of the most urgent global challenges of our time. How do asset managers manage the transition from traditional to sustainable investments? What are some constructive ways we can make a positive environmental impact through our investments?
2018: America’s Pension CrisisThe majority of U.S. public pension plans are severely underfunded. How can these plans invest their way back to fiscal health? Is there a long-term portfolio solution that solves the underfunding while meeting the needs of municipalities, state governments, taxpayers, and plan members?
2017: Solvency of Corporate Defined Benefit PlansThe combination of high longevity and low interest rates has made it challenging for corporate pension plans to remain solvent. Should plans pursue riskier strategies in the hope of increasing returns? Is there a portfolio strategy that delivers the promised pensions while minimizing the need for future cash injections from plan sponsors?

The remaining of the top 5 teams will share a “Runner-Up” prize.
Through our inclusive prize structure, we will be able bring to spotlight more diverse and innovative solutions, encourage intrinsic motivation, create greater intellectual exchange, and foster collaboration.
Partners who opt for naming rights enjoy increased exposure on top of their existing benefits. They will be promoted through our social media extensively in the week leading up to the finals weekend, be featured in our media after the competition, and of course have their name associated with the top proposals and winning teams.

It is my pleasure to welcome you as a potential partner of the student-led McGill International
Portfolio Challenge (MIPC), a world-class knowledge hub tackling pressing grand socio-
economic challenges from the lens of long-term investments. To the industry partners who have
supported us from our humble beginnings in 2017, I appreciate your continued commitment to
our efforts as we launch this fifth edition.
The MIPC student executive team, under the tutelage of Desautels Finance Professor Sebastien Betermier, has
identified an invaluable opportunity for all stakeholders involved to bridge the gap between academic knowledge
and industry practices. As we collectively move towards a ‘new normal,’ the team intends to engage all our
stakeholders to continuously evolve our design and create a fruitful experience for everyone. Today’s asset
management industry is faced with a unique set of challenges that demands innovative and multi-dimensional
approaches. I believe that students have the ability and drive to shape the future of this industry.
Thank you in advance for your support and expression of confidence in the Desautels Faculty of Management
and McGill University. We look forward to welcoming the world’s most accomplished students and global industry
leaders to the virtual edition of MIPC.
Warm regards,
Morty Yalovsky
