ACTA REPORT Mal Dyson – President Paul Gilbert – CEO

My Clubs My ScoresWe are excited to report that more than 200 of our 250 clubs have now become MCMS users. The Grading and Handicapping Algorithm is currently being tested in the background with the ambition that this can go live in 2022. The ACTA Rules Supervisors are scheduled to meet in the coming months to assess these innovations and propose rule revisions that will introduce and allow these changes to occur.

Member SurveysThe ACTA Executive had a Strategic Planning day on 14 May. One of the items raised at this event was the need to perform surveys with registered shooting members and clubs regarding your perception of the value and usefulness of the products and services the Association offers. CPR Group is currently working with us to design the questionnaires and we hope we will be inundated with responses that will provide us with more clarity regarding what our shooters and clubs want us to provide you moving forward.

National Firearms AmnestyThe Australian Government has partnered with Crime Stoppers Australia to launch a permanent national firearms amnesty to keep Australians safe while ensuring those with a legitimate need to access firearms are able to do so. The amnesty, which began on 1 July 2021, allows anyone in Australia to hand in unregistered or unwanted firearms that could otherwise fall into the wrong hands. If you have an unregistered or unwanted firearm, this is an opportunity to hand it in with no penalty. For further information, please visit: https://crimestoppers.com.au/firearmamnesty/

Mal and Paul

As we move into the second half of 2021, Covid-19 and State

Government intervention has once again disrupted our normal life routines and experiences with intermittent lock-downs and border closures across much of the country. While we are all somewhat frustrated and confused by all of these constant changes, we hope you are coping with the constant revisions and interruptions to your lives and remaining reasonably sane and tolerant with the entire situation.

2021 NationalsAgain, we are trying to navigate our way forward with upcoming National events, the first of which is the 27–29 August Sporting Clays Nationals, followed by the 5 – 10 October Trap Nationals and 18–23 October ISSF Nationals. The first two of these are in NSW / Wagga and the third is in Perth, so any or all of these events could still be impacted by Covid-19 depending on current local or State outbreaks and resultant State border closures. The ACTA is still planning to conduct all three of these events at this point in time, however, IF restrictions and compliance rules remain in force into next month, the events could be impacted. Please watch this space for further information.

2020 OlympicsWith fingers and toes crossed, the previously-postponed 2020 Olympics are now only a few short weeks away, and Paul Adams, Laura Coles, Tom Grice, Laetisha Scanlan, Penny Smith and James Willett will be competing in the ISSF Shotgun events. We wish our athletes every success in their ambition to perform at their highest level on the world stage and do themselves and Australia proud. We hope to see a few of you standing on the podium and being accoladed and rewarded for your devotion to our sport and the huge amount of time and effort you have all invested in it.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Roma Clay Target Club

2021 QCTA State Trap CarnivalRoma Clay Target Club, 1–3 May 2021

It was a long time between carnivals with no state events contested in Queensland during 2020 due to Covid. We were therefore excited to be able to conduct the 2021 DTL championships at the Roma Clay Target Club, and once again the weather did not disappoint. Competitors, visitors and campers arrived in record numbers to enjoy the beautifully prepared grounds and excellent hospitality of the Roma club members and volunteers.

At the same ceremony we were pleased to award Life Membership to long-term member Robert Nugent who has made significant contributions to our association and sport in a variety of roles over the years. Congratulations Robert and thank you for your efforts over the years.

Also recognised for their achievements were Clayton Cusack, Daryl Stevens and Tim Williams who received their Grand Slam awards as recognised by the ACTA.

thanks largely to the work put in by Roma as the host club and their committee, members and volunteers who worked hard to prepare the grounds and facilities. Thank you for your hospitality once again. Our appreciation to the Western Zone team and their recruits for running the office, Woody, Viv, Geoff, Julie, Wendy, Brenda, Kylie and Brett and all who assisted. Thanks also to the Central Zone for maintaining the scoreboard, and for the invaluable help from trappers and grounds staff. A great job once again by Brian Muirson as Shoot Marshal ably assisted by his offsiders Bill Allan and Richard Morrison. We also appreciated the help of Luke Luckhoff who took the presentation photos and provided the many action shots of shooters over the weekend.

Thank you to the Beretta team for being available throughout the carnival to provide gun servicing and to talk to shooters, it’s always a pleasure to have you attend State events. Most importantly thank you to all

our generous sponsors who continue to support this event: Winchester Australia, Beretta Australia, Curley Cattle Transport, Western Zone QCTA, Roma Clay Target Club, Go Shooting, Qld Police Clay Target Club and Spika Gun Safes.

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to those who travelled from near and far to attend this year’s carnival, and to all who contributed to its success.

Recently the Bendigo Academy of Sport held their sports awards presentations for the years 2019 and 2020. This year was the first time achievements for 2 years were awarded on the one night, this being bought about by Covid 19.

The Bendigo Academy of Sport caters for some 10 different sports including Clay Target Shooting. Clay Target has now been a featured sport for the past 7 years and it is fair to say that all past and present students have benefited by taking part in the program.

Past students have included Laura Woolley (winner of the Overall Athlete of the Year in 2015), Kiara Dean, Rieley Fitzgibbon, Sarah and Matisse Appleby, Oliver Boucher, Jacob Motha, Cooper Reading and Cameron Ford, to name some who have achieved success in the sport.

In addition to the physical training, the Academy program includes topics on Sports Psychology, Nutrition and Diet, Social Media, Strength and Conditioning, Eye Care and Vision, Injury Prevention, Drugs in Sport, to name a few.

Clay Target shooting students have been fortunate over the years to have had ACTA coaches Steve Atkins, Jim Shepherd and Terry Boucher participate in the program.

Each year a student is named as the “Athlete of the Year” and another receives the “Coaches Encouragement Award”.

For the 2019 year, Connor O’Brien was named as the Athlete of the Year and Troy Anderson received the Encouragement Award. For 2020, the athlete award winner was Cameron Ford and the encouragement award winner was Morgan

Carroll-Keays. All these recipients have a great future ahead, should they continue to compete.

Also on the night, Glenn Woodhatch was crowned Academy Coach of the Year for 2019-20.

BAS Executive Officer, Graham Gordon in a report said Glenn, as one of the coaches of the clay target shooting squad since its inception in 2014, has been the driving force behind it becoming an associated sport with the Academy and he had provided the opportunity for many shooters over the years to improve as athletes and develop personally.

"It was great that Glenn was nominated for this award by the recent athletes, but also for his devotion to the program now over several years," he said.

"The shooters have excelled under Glenn's guidance and tutelage and are fortunate to have him as their current coach."

2019 Athlete of the Year Connor O’Brien with 2019–20 Coach of the Year Glenn Woodhatch,

Psychological Skills for Shooting

I cannot hit the target, if I cannot see the target! When I was studying psychology as an under-graduate back in the 1980s we briefly touched on target acquisition as part of the statistics course. I always thought that target acquisition would be an interesting subject for these articles but it needed to be relevant to shooting and not just mathematical or statistical model that had little bearing on clay target shooting. An internet search for ‘target acquisition’ will bring up the follow- ing topics: surveillance, military models, theory of eye movement, signal detection theory, language acquisition, medical and economic modeling.

One aspect of target acquisition is signal detection theory. Wikipedia gives the following definition:

Signal detection theory is a means to measure the ability to differentiate between information- bearing patterns (called stimulus in living organ-isms, signal in machines) and random patterns that distract from the information (called noise, consisting of background stimuli and random activity of the detection machine and of the nervous system of the operator). An example of this is the modern highway patrol vehicle. In years past the lights, beacons and aerials on the top of these cars were easy to detect (visual signal), even from a distance as they approached you. Now the lights and beacons have a much lower profile (blending into the background) and are not detectable until the cars are very close.

Just before the 2021 Skeet Nationals, a shooting friend, gave me some old copies of an American Skeet and Sporting Clays magazine. In one of these magazines, the topic of target detection and acquisition is somewhat easily explained.

John Shima, in an article called Target Detec-tion and Acquisition, Clay Target Nation May 2018 argues that proper target detection and acquisi- tion provides the visual input that initiates an effective shot sequence. He continues by stating detection and acquisition of the target is followed by three critical elements; centering visual focus and tracking, rotation and synchronization of gun

speed to target speed, and target engagement and hyperfocus.

In all shooting disciplines, the concept of the gun hold point, the target pick-up point and the hit point is well known and mostly understood. Shima explains target detection and acquisition using the following headings:

Accepting the background: Sometimes, the background at the gun club can be challenging. We must remember that all competitors will have the same background, so accept it and make the most of it. While you are waiting to shoot, settle your eyes at the hold point you intend to use and practice detecting the target with your peripheral vision. Direct your attention on what you can see and not what you want to see.

Awareness of the target: Shima explains that awareness is merely being in the present, without attaching any emotions to the thoughts. Keep your inner voice, Self 1 from last months article, quiet. Awareness is a state of readiness to see the target so you can watch it until it breaks. Proper target acquisition involves settling your gaze at the eye hold, expanding the ‘soft’ focus and maintaining it while the target enters your peripheral vision. It is important here to resist the urge to ‘hard’ focus on the target because your peripheral vision needs to detect the direction, speed and dis-tance of the target. If the peripheral vision has not detected the emergence of the target, it will delay the ability of the central vision to acquire the target at the eye hold point.

Detecting the target: Each visual field, peripheral and central, play a specific role in the process of locating, detecting speed and direction, and center- ing visual focus on the target. Shima explains, the ideal method of locating the emergence of a moving target is to settle the eyes (soft focus) at the eye hold. The central visual field should be above the gun on the target path and the depth of focus should be slightly beyond the target path.

Page 29: 2021 QCTA State Trap Carnival – Roma CTC VCTA SEZ …

August 2021 – Clay Target 27

This will allow the peripheral vision to capture the initial movement of the target as it enters the field of vision. The peripheral vision will then transmit speed, distance and direction data to the visual cortex. The image of the target will pass into the central visual field where it will be easily acquired.

Acquiring the target: The target is acquired when the peripheral (soft) focus transitions to centered (hard) focus.

Shima concludes the article by stating that con- sistent and efficient target detection and acqui-sition is the hallmark of an elite shooter: these shooters have developed consistent mechanical,

Psychological Skills for ShootingContinued from page 26

visual and mental habits that allow their conscious mind and adaptive unconscious mind to work together in a harmonious way to coordinate a seemingly effortless, pre-planned move to the break point.

These shooters consistently detect and acquire each target correctly and just watch it continuously while trusting their ability to break it.

On 25th April this year the ACTA lost another Clay Target Hall of Fame Member in Warren Charlton. Warren was a very fine competitor and Champion Trap Shooter. His shooting record in National titles alone was outstanding. Robbie is probably the only shooter who beat Warren in a shoot-off.Warren was a very close friend as we grew up together in Sydney. He was a plumber for the fuel companies when he was not shooting. He also played a hard game of squash. We would play each week, that’s when I gave him the name of “Plastic Pigmy”.Wozza, you will be missed but I will still talk about your achievements and the good times.

28 Clay Target – August 2021

What's happening in the VCTA

I think that my comment in the last issue of Clay Target News that “at last, everything seems to be back to some sort of normality” upset somebody! No sooner had the comment appeared in print than the COVID “bug” raised its nasty head again and we began a “circuit breaker” lockdown in Victoria!Do I dare say that we seem to have things under control at the moment . . . I’m reluctant to utter it too loudly in case it upsets someone – again! The hosting of the 2021 Commonwealth Titles is the next big event on the VCTA calendar. The event will be held at the State Ground–Echuca CTC and is still planned to go ahead from Friday 30th July to Sunday 1st August. With over $12,000 in cash prizes, as well as a number of prize donations from generous sponsors, the Titles promise to be an exciting event. Nominations can be made on-line through My Clubs My Scores, or you can download a nomination form from the VCTA website www.vcta.com.au and send it to me for processing. There will even be an opportunity to nominate “at the window” at the event but you will pay extra for this privilege.Whatever way you nominate, you are sure to be part of a most challenging event with five of the timetabled activities to be shot off 18 metres. Of course, the Handicap event will be shot off your ACTA handicap mark. With many thanks to BEST, Lead Pro, Winchester, Northern Vic Ammo Supplies and Shoot-Off Australia, as the event’s sponsors, the Common- wealth Titles are sure to have something for everyone. The State Ground–Echuca CTC State raffle is now entering its final stages. At the time of writing, there are fewer than 60 tickets remaining! While the raffle is due to be drawn at the end of August, the draw will take place sooner if all the tickets are sold. At $50 per ticket and only 350 tickets in total, you have a good chance of being one of the lucky winners. With the generous support of Beretta Australia,

the prizes for first, second and third promise that the winners will be well rewarded for their purchase.

For details go to: https://www.raffletix.com.au?ref=4fpbw

The month of August sees each of the four Zones hold their School Student qualifying events. Proudly sponsored by Spartan-Global, each Zone will then send their top three shooters in each of the four divisions plus their winning school team, to the final. This will be held at the State Ground–Echuca CTC on Monday, 6th September. For me, this is one of the highlights of the competition year as we see 60–70 of the State’s best young talent go through their paces. The qualifying events for each Zone are;

South East: Frankston/Australia CTC, August 5

North East: Echuca CTC, August 12

North West: Mildura CTC, August 19

South West: Noorat GC, August 26

The day before the School Student’s Final, Sunday September 5, is the VCTA’s State Ball Trap event. Both individual and Zone Team events will be held – all at the State Ground–Echuca CTC. This, too, promises to be an exciting event and will be an inspiring activity for students who come a day early for practice. At the same time, it will be inspiring for the students to see support from the clay target fraternity who are able to stay on and watch their event the next day.

An excellent lead-up event to the School Students’ activities will be Maryborough’s Central Victorian Junior Classic to be held on the 24th of July. The Maryborough Club has been able to source excellent sponsorship for this event with prizes for first and second in each category. Entry is free to all Junior competitors. You must be under 18 on the day of competition. There is also an “Old Angles Day” being run in conjunction with the Junior event for non-Juniors.

QR codes are now compulsory for all Community Sport activities. This includes Clay Target events and practice. By now, all clubs should have

Page 31: 2021 QCTA State Trap Carnival – Roma CTC VCTA SEZ …

August 2021 – Clay Target 29

registered with Vic Health and have received their code. The code should be displayed in numerous places around club facilities and all attendees, both competitors, club members and visitors need to ensure they have registered when they arrive at your facility. It is a legal requirement and the fines for non-compliance are pretty steep.

Along with this, clubs need to ensure that they are compliant with all social distancing, mask and health and hygiene requirements. It is essential that we look after one another and do all we can to keep each other safe and healthy.

Don’t forget, we are now at that time of year where clubs need to submit their 2022 calendar! Clubs have been sent a copy of the “Shoot Program” pages to complete and submit by the end of August – even sooner if possible!

With a little luck, and good fortune, the ugly head of COVID might leave us alone for long enough to return to our normality again! Stay well and keep safe – and I look forward to seeing you on a shooting lane soon.

For some time, it has been suggested that the list of accredited coaches be published in the CT.

This month we will start with the Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.

Next month Victoria and Queensland and the following month New South Wales.

The coach’s name, their club and the level attained will be the only information listed.

If your name doesn’t appear and you think you are an accredited coach, please contact your Zone Coach or the State Coaching Director in your State who can check the records.

One reason may be that the ACTA has a new computer system and in the past a coach could fall behind the expiry date and still remain on the list until the office manually adjusted the list.

With the new system, once the expiry date is reached, the computer automatically clears the list.

This does not stop the re-listing of a coach once the re-accreditation process has been completed, and the coach will not be required to do a full coaching accreditation course to have their coaching accreditation renewed.

Coaches are reminded that re-accreditations can be completed by a competition level coach.

Competition level coaches that need re-accreditation paperwork can contact their State Coaching Directors to arrange the process.

MY CLUBS MY SCORESATTENTION: Club Administrators

We now have over 205 ACTA Clubs who have requested access to the MCMS system, but now urgently require ALL clubs, as soon as possible,

to be up and running with the program.

In order to collect enough relevant data, that is shooters scores, all ACTA events should by now be using the MCMS program. This will ensure that the automatic grades and handicaps calculated for your

members are correct and in place by 1 January 2022 when the Record books will most likely become obsolete.

If your Club is not as yet using MCMS, you should urgently arrange for access to the program.

The Program is easy to use and FREE to all ACTA affiliated clubs and can be used either online or offline.

To acquire access to MCMS please contactMartin Smith Ph: 0457 079 929

46 Clay Target – August 2021

Fine weather greeted the twenty-eight shooters who rolled up to Bega’s Tarraganda ground for the June shoot. The program included 50 targets Double Barrel, 25 targets Single Barrel and for a change of focus and a test of reflexes, 25 targets Ball Trap to round off the afternoon. The opening event, 50T Double Barrel, saw Craig Field, fresh from his holiday touring, score a possible 50/50 to win AA Grade with Alf Niesar, one target down on 49/50, taking out second spot. In A Grade, Dean Shipton led the field with a fine 48/50, leaving Kevin Hurt and Mick Diss to

fight out second after they finished on 47/50. At the fourth extra, Mick generously missed to allow Kevin to hold on to second prize. In B Grade, Chris Brown and Lindsay Blewitt, shooting side by side in squad four, found 48/50 to be a nice result. Thus followed

a further twelve targets before Chris emerged victor 60/62, with Lindsay in second 59/62. Christel Feldmann showed the way in C Grade, winning with a score of 42/50, with Geoff Beht in second, 35/50.

One shell per target provided the stimulus for the second event, 25T Single

Barrel. Craig Field once again led proceedings in AA Grade with a fine 24/25. One target back were three of the club’s consistent players in Charlie Smith, Alf Niesar and Ray Welch. A very short shoot-off saw Alf take second place, 25/27. Three contestants, Kevin Hurt, Col Sheehan and Stuart Shipton tied on 21/25 to send A Grade to a brief shoot-off. Col emerged winner 23/27, with Kevin runner-up 22/27.

Dale Hurt needed one extra target to decide B Grade, winning 24/26 to Lindsay Blewitt’s 23/26. Christel Feldmann followed up her first event effort, winning

C Grade with a score of 19/25. Bombala regular, Phillip Rumph, took out second, 12/25.

Ball Trap finished up the afternoon. In A Grade, Charlie Smith displayed good reflexes to catch up with 23 targets out of his allotted 25, Alf Niesar taking second, 20/25. Bert Deacon led the field by one to win B Grade 21/25. John Siede, Lindsay Blewitt , Shane Platts and Tony Gray, who all finished on twenty, returned to the field for Tony to take out the second spot. C Grade went to Brian Moffitt with a score of 18/25 with George Toyne taking second on 14/25.

With everything finished, Charlie Smith was declared High Gun with a score of 93/100.

Continental in JulyThe 100 target RV Repairs Continental Points Score event is one of the feature events on the Bega Gun Club calendar each year. RV Repairs principals, Pauline and Phil Body, as well as being long serving club members, continue to provide the sashes and Bronzewing shells, that form the trophy pool for this entertaining event.

Covid, as it has for many things, impacted on attendance, with 27 shooters in attendance. The weather did its bit, providing fresh but sunny con- ditions with a slight breeze. Targets were presented in four lots of 25 with two visits to the traps.

Overall sash winner went to Charlie Smith who shot consistently throughout the day for a score of 281/300 as well as surviving a very brief shoot-off with Steve McIntyre for the prize. AA Grade was won by Alf Niesar with a score of 274/300 from second placegetter, Craig Field on 269/300. Steve McIntyre took out A Grade, gathering up 278 points from the possible 300, whilst Ray

Welch took second with a score of 270/300.

In B Grade, two of the elder statesmen of the club battled throughout the day with Bert Deacon scoring 263/300 to pip second placegetter, John Siede on 260/300. C Grade went to George Ada-mopoulos with a score of 250/300, with Christel Feldmann in second with a score of 196/300.

The fearless treasurer, Allain Magri, kept his blood pressure intact by missing the first target in the raffle so as not to have to pay out the cash and graciously settled for the meat tray.

The Club is very grateful for the ongoing spon- sorship of this event by Phil and Pauline, as they are of all sponsors’ support. Without their gener- osity, clubs would find survival even more difficult.

Next month the club will be offering a program of 20 target Double Barrel, 50 target Points Score and 30 target Handicap. See you there! In other Club news, we are now the proud owners of a defibrillator unit. This unit, purchased with the help of a Sport and Recreation grant, will also be made available to our fellow shooting clubs to ensure maximum use of the resource.
