SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Monday: The Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle Tuesday: Ss. Timothy and Titus Wednesday: St. Angela Merici; Tu B’Shvat (Jewish new year of trees) begins at sunset Thursday: St. Thomas Aquinas FEAST OF FAITH — The Peniten al Rite Standing together in the presence of the Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins and faults and failings. But the peniten al rite is really less about our sins than it is about God’s mercy. It is not a me for individual confession, like a mini-sacrament of reconcilia on. It is, rather, a preparatory rite, preparing us to praise the mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses the miraculous catch of fish—when he realizes who is in the boat with him—he falls at Jesus’ feet with the words, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more aware of the Lord’s presence we become, the more awareness we also have of our sinfulness, our weakness.

OFIARA MSZY ŚWIĘTYCH Eucharystia jest „źródłem i zarazem szczytem całego życia chrześcijańskiego”. To z niej płyną niezliczone łaski. Prosimy o kontakt z biurem parafialnym.

  • ON CALL NARRATIVES, AND FOLLOWING THE CALL

Copyright 2021 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected]) Call narra ves. In a scriptural context, the term refers

to stories of individuals being called by God for some mission. Look to Moses for a classic example. He’s shepherding his sheep when he sees the burning bush on Mount Horeb. The bush isn’t being consumed, though, so he goes over to check it out. “Here I am,” Moses says upon hearing his name. That’s when God tells him to lose his sandals, and introduces himself to Moses as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Then God tells Moses to go to Pharaoh to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. As call narra ves go, this one is pre y drama c.

But a lot of the call narra ves are pre y drama c. In Acts, Saul’s story begins: “Now Saul, s ll breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord…” Here Saul seeks authority from the high priest to go to the synagogues in Damascus so that, should he find any early Chris ans, “…he might bring them back to Jerusalem in chains.” Of course, as Saul is nearing Damascus, a light from the sky flashes around him, knocking him to the ground. A voice asks: “Saul, Saul, why are you persecu ng me?” Saul answers, “Who are you, sir?” and hears “It is Jesus…” Then Jesus sends Saul--now blinded by the light--into town to await further instruc on. Yikes!

And while call-narra ve-ly speaking, today’s first reading (beginning with “The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying: ‘Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and

announce to it the message that I will tell you’”) seems mild enough, don’t forget the larger call narra ve that immediately precedes the passage the Church gives us today. The larger call narra ve begins with “This is the word of the Lord that came to Jonah…set out for the great city of Nineveh, and preach against it; their wickedness has come up before me…” Jonah doesn’t want the assignment, so he sails away to Tarshish. Away from God. But enter the big fish, as God saves both Jonah and Nineveh in the end.

By comparison, the call narra ve in today’s Gospel is pre y laid-back. Jesus has just begun his public ministry, proclaiming that the kingdom of God is at hand and direc ng all to repent and believe in the gospel. Then, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, he calls to Simon and his brother Andrew--both fishermen--saying, “Come a er me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They do. He calls to James and his brother John--also fishermen--next. They follow Jesus, too. Now, the reading doesn’t say precisely why the four leave their nets for Jesus, but they apparently find something compelling in the man. Which, even knowing what we now know of salva on, prompts the ques on: Do we? Per the Apostle Paul to the Corinthians, “…the world in its present form is passing away.” These words seem as mely now as they no doubt did then. Regarding discipleship, our own call narra ves [be they drama c (a burning bush?) or laid-back (a nagging feeling that God is nudging us in a certain direc on)] are playing out all around us. Time to listen. Time to respond to the call.
