Preparedness can mitigatewater crisis

Sir, With Chennai facing severe water crisis, the Govt. should ready its resources for themonsoon on a war footing.

It should desilt and clean all the reservoirswhich have gone dry.

Similarly, all the other smaller water bodies, waterways and canals should also be desilted, deepened and cleaned.

Though the govt. is making regular suchannouncements, the work is only taken uprandomly and is progressing at a slow pace.

Perungudi lake is a classic example, wherethe residents’ concerted efforts ensured theconstruction of a wall around the lake to pro-tect it from private lorry tankers emptyingsewage into the lake.

All the water bodies must be in a ready stateto capture all the rain water from the ensuingmonsoon and ensure that it does not drain intothe sea.

Similarly, all buildings (commercial and resi-dential) should ensure functional rain waterharvesting structures to augment the groundwater levels. N. Vijayaaghavan, 59/1,Muthalamman Koil Street, WestMambalam, Ph: 99626 64766

Rainwater harvesting structuresaugment ground water

Sir, The rain water harvesting structuresinstalled almost a decade back in several com-mercial and residential buildings have not beenmaintained properly.

The water crisis and the fast depleting groundwater level is proof of this in spite of the floodsin 2015.

The fact that many of the houses and apart-ment complexes where the structures aremaintained properly are able to draw groundwater is proof of the success of rain waterharvesting.

Research has shown that for every 1sqm ofroof area, if there is 1 mm of rain, for an averagerainfall of 80 cm to 90 cm, the runoff from a 100sqm area of terrace would be 70,000 to 90,000liters a year, which is substantial and couldeither be let off into percolation pits or into hugesumps as a few have done.

I appeal to all the residents to maintain rainwater harvesting structures. P. K.Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments,Gandhi Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 98402 93321

Appeal to replace transformer onMotilal Street
