The last couple of weeks have been full of wonderful learning experiences, activities and events that remind me of just how privileged we are to work with young people. They are a constant reminder of human potential and endeavour, and never cease to impress! Last Friday, a group of our youth ministry students were involved in leading a session for the Grade 6 students from St. John’s PS Euroa. The Grade 6 students were here at FCJ College to make use of our great Flexible Learn- ing Space for their Leadership retreat. The theme of the day was My Leadership Journey. The Youth Ministry student lead- ers were great role models to the younger students, and according to the teachers in attendance – an ab- solute hit! On 19/20 February, I attended the Sandhurst Leadership Mass and Gathering. The theme for the year is Listen with the ear of your heart. On the Tuesday night, we heard from Associate Professor Robyn Horner; of the Religion and Theology, Philos- ophy department at the Australian Catholic University as she unpacked this theme through scripture. Then on the Wednesday, Geraldine Doogue, AO, media presenter, led us through various linked themes around leaders listening with the ear of their hearts. As you can imagine, Geraldine had some wonderful wisdom from various leaders to share with us from her amazing journalist career. Tuesday of this week, we held our Annual Swimming Carnival, and it was again a joy to see the engagement and participa- tion of those in attendance. It is these types of days that helps a school culture develop positively, and for students to connect with others out of the classroom in a common cause. Our Year 12 students really stepped up, par- ticipated, and as- sisted throughout the day, which was lovely to see. The winning house was Hughes with 2233 points, followed by Davy with 1889 points and in third, D’Houet with 1811 points. A big thank you must go to Mr Luke Morgan who worked tirelessly with his team of helpers, staff and students alike, to ensure the day was well set up and ran smoothly. The lifting of a suppression order on the conviction of George Pell on five counts of child sexual abuse this week will no doubt dominate the media and certainly reverberate throughout the Catholic world. At FCJ College, we have the utmost respect for the process of the law and the need to uphold the integrity of our legal system. It is the right of every citizen who is ag- grieved to make allegations that may be tested by the law and the right of all to defend them- selves in court. Please know, that as Catholic educators, the best interests and safety of the young are always at the fore- front of our thinking and actions. The wellbeing of all children and especially those in our care will always be our first priority and we have zero tolerance for child abuse. We aim to create a child safe and friendly en- vironment where children feel safe and are free to enjoy life to the full. Our hearts go out to all victims of child sexual abuse. Today, we held the first of our BRCE – Benalla Regional Catho- lic Education – transition days with the Grade 6 students from our partner schools; St Joseph’s Benalla, St John’s Euroa and St Mary’s Mansfield. It was a fabulous day of interaction and participation. Our student leaders ran a great icebreaker ses- sion, which set the bar high for the three following sessions. Mr Luke Morgan and the Year 10 Sport and Rec students, Mrs Kate DeFazio and Year 9 Drama students and Mrs Jane Branigan and the Youth Ministry students ran very interactive sessions for the 96 Grade 6 students in attendance. They all did a wonder- ful job, demonstrating great maturity, leadership and kindness. It is hard to believe we are at the half way mark of term one already! Take care and God bless. Student Medical Information

From the commencement of 2019, PAM accounts will be used to collect and main-tain important medical information for your child.

The collection of this information is a legal requirement which allows us to care for your child’s medical needs while they are attending classes and school activities. We are requesting families update the informa-tion at the beginning of each school year and also during the year as required.

Please access your PAM account using your login details, in the Student Medical Profile section firstly, update your email address and secondly, add medical information for your child.

We do stress urgency for this to occur as a lack of medical information may impact your child’s participation in off-site activities.

SRC - What’s Happening in Year 11

36 ARUNDEL ST BENALLAadmin@fc jbenal la .catho l ic .edu.au enquiries: 5762 1222

It feels like only yesterday that the 2019 Year 11 class were nervously moving in to their lockers in the Language Centre and preparing themselves for their final two years of sec-ondary schooling. I have been impressed with the maturity and dedication that has been displayed in the opening weeks of the year as students come to terms with the increased work load and higher expectations. It is vital, whether students are undertaking VCAL or VCE subjects, that students set the tone early with their organisation and study habits.

On top of the academic work, we have held our SRC elections and our representatives will be announced soon. It was an incredibly tight race with an extraordinary number of out-standing candidates.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, 16 students will be attending a careers breakfast in Wangaratta on Thursday 7th March. At this breakfast they will get to listen to and speak with professionals across a range of industries about how they have found success in their careers.

The date and venue have been set for the 2019 Presentation Ball. It will be held on 13 September at the Lakeside Community Centre, so clear your calendars and make sure that you take part in one of the highlights of the FCJ College year.

FCJ College Art Room

Yr 7 Art & Design students have been learning isometric drawing and the study of visually representing different 'forms'.

Yr 9 Visual Art students started with constructing a 'Glos-sary of Art Terms' in their Visual Diary and demonstrating their knowledge with the depiction of the art elements & principles in existing artworks. They are currently explor-ing the use of 'Anthropomorphism' in artworks by con-temporary artist Rona Green. Students will use this as in-spiration for an original portrait acrylic painting task.

Yr 10s have been tested recently on their understanding of Art Terminology and are currently researching a range of historic and contemporary artists and their studio practice. These students are also planning a homage drawing task to their chosen artist and develop understanding of using different drawing materials and techniques.

Yr 11 Unit 1 Studio Art students have been researching & recording their ideas based on a personal selection of vari-ous sources of inspiration including artists and will com-mence their first practical drawing task 'Contemporary Still Life' next week.

Yr 12 Unit 3 Studio Art have completed their first out-come: Writing an Exploration Proposal that formulates

the content and parameters of their own studio process around a chosen theme. Some of the themes this year include; Architecture, Loyalty & Relationships, Greed, Change, The Natural World and Human Emotion.

Recently the VCE Studio Art students visited the Benal-la Art Gallery to attend a floor talk from Contemporary Australian artist Kate Rhodes to gain insight from her stu-dio practice and undertook a workshop on resin casting.Don't forget to follow what’s happening on Instagram fcj_art_room

Anushree’s trip to India

On her recent trip to India, Anushree Vashishta distributed work books and stationery to the underprivileged students at a state school in India. She also encouraged the students to develop good personal hygiene and keep their surroundings clean.

With the support of FCJ College, Anushree was able to provide 50 students with a chance to build a better future for themselves.

Mr R.K Vats, President of Senior Citizen Association, Va-tika City, and Mrs Sangeeta Vashishta, also supported this project by motivating the students and emphasising the importance of cleanliness.

Anushree said, 'I would like to thank Mrs Jane Branigan, my teachers at FCJ College and my parents for instilling human values in me and encouraging me to serve the community.'

Year 11 Psychology Games

This week our Year 11 Psychology classes used their newly created revision games on the parts of the brain to help recap at the beginning of our lesson.

Years 9X and 9Y participated in an extended Digital Technology project based on 3-D design, scaling and construction as part of Maths. I, for one, feel that the digital technologies architectural design project has proven to be a valuable part of this year's learning in Maths.

We used the latest three-dimensional printing tech-nology (TinkerCad) to create a design that incorpo-rates the key themes of scaling, coding and teamwork. The reason that this activity has proven to be benefi-cial to our groups is that it has allowed students to operate in a simulated workplace team environment and we got to design and create a whole group con-struction.

In this project, we completed the house design pro-ject. This involved the class being separated into small groups that worked together to complete the project to the highest standard we could. The groups had a nominated group leader who was responsible for the delegation of tasks to individual group mem-bers, to ensure that everything was completed on time. We were given a design brief that included the key considerations of a house that we were soon to design in modules and then put together according to our floorplans. We began planning our houses in our groups, deciding on the floorplans and layouts of the homes that would soon become our own. We were assisted with scaling to create a smaller version of an actual home design.

The group leaders then delegated specific zones of the home to different people in the group who would then go on to design their modules using Tinkercad 3-D software. Along the way we had to check that floor and wall thicknesses were consist-ent within our groups, as well as checking that our scaling was correct. We were able to design and con-

struct room fittings and some were quite detailed. Most of my peers were able to spend a bit of time perfecting their constructions. Mrs Birnie then print-ed off our designs and we assembled our individual modules into a larger model.

This activity has proven to be worthwhile to all of us because we learned to develop our software manip-ulation skills and learn more about scaling and unit conversions. We also worked in collaboration with our Visual Communication and Design classes and in a way that was like our integrated studies class (PBL).

The digital technologies program has been nothing short of amazing and has been very beneficial to all of the participating students throughout the dura-tion of this semester. It has been extremely interest-ing to work in workplace-like conditions, using small groups and appointed group leaders, to achieve the best possible outcome in all of our personal designs. It has been amazing to have had the opportunity to work with the latest 3D design software, all the while learning new things from our teacher and each other along the way.

Could you be a permanent care parent?

There are a number of children supported by the Department of Health & Human Services who require a family for life as they are unable to live with their birth families. We are seeking committed and motivated people who would be interested in learning more about providing a permanent family for a child. Assistance payments are made to the Permanent Care family to assist with the day to day expenses of caring for a child/young person. Assistance payments are considered to be a reimbursement for expenses and not an earned income. We are also keen to speak with families who are particularly interested in caring for children aged between 5 and 10 years. Information sessions are being held on: Wednesday 20th March 2019 at 6:00pm Department of Health & Human Services 43-47 Rowan Street, Wangaratta Thursday 21st March 2019 at 6:00pm Department of Health & Human Services 163-167 Welsford Street, Shepparton Bookings are not essential.
