GRAND CHAMPION OF DURAL SHOW& CHAMPION MINIATURE
Rod’s Tango ‘Tobruk’N.& V. Shipway
Apologies: B Mitchell, L & I Friess, B Chan, T Davis, S Cheetham, V HeadRaffle Plants – mixed seedlings donated by Mal Ferguson
Meeting opened at 8.10pm by Geoff Le Marne. Welcome everyone to our Spring Show. Apologies to all for the delay in the Newsletter production. Our Editor has been unwell and has various issues with internet and power at her place. We are hoping to have it out in the next week.
It seems a long time since our last meeting and even a long time since Dural and the National Orchid Extravaganza. We had a very successful show for both members and vendors. One of the highlights was definitely the Paphiopedilum Show – they put on a very impressive display. Thanks to Seong Tay and please pass on our gratitude to the members of the Paph Society. The floral art displays were also extremely good this year. The centre display looked great, thank you to Bill Goodridge for his re-engineering on the structure. Congratulations to Norm Shipway – his Rod's Tango 'Tobruk' was simply stunning.
Thank you to so many members for their assistance in organising the show and working over the weekend to make it a success. Particular thanks to Judith and David Brooks for all their work behind the scenes and David's organisation of the judging, prize cards and sashes; Seong Tay for his generous sponsorship of the show and arranging the Paphiopedilum Show; Nat Cicciari as Show Marshall attending every day and arranging the setup and pull down and making sure everything ran smoothly over the weekend; all the members who helped with the show promotion, especially Sandra Cheetham, Toni Benton and Betty Chan; Mal and Fay Ferguson for their management of the Sales Table; also Andy and Jessie Gatt, Toni and Mick Benton, Norm and Val Shipway, Louis and Irma Friess, George Kovacs, John Gate, Warwick Farlow, Vic Petrovski, Arthur Smyrnios and many more. AND, OF COURSE, THANK YOU TO ALL THE VENDORS AND EXHIBITORS, WITHOUT WHOM THERE WOULD BE NO SHOW.
Nat Cicciari also wished to thank Judith and David Brooks, George Kovacs, Vince Head, the Bentons, Terry Davis (wonderful potting demos yet again), the Shipways, George Serhan and Bill Goodridge.
Judith Brooks provided a report on the financial success of the National Orchid Extravaganza. We made a profit of around $1500 this year with all income and outgoings accounted for, including prize monies paid out. We made a saving on costs this year by deciding not to advertise on the radio, as it was considered the return on investment was no longer positive given the annual increases in the advertising fees. The addition of the sponsorship from Seong Tay and The Orchid Mart was much appreciated. The Sales Table was also successful over the weekend with total sales amounting to over $7,000. Attendance numbers were very good with around 430 people on Friday, 470 on Saturday and 345 on Sunday.
Flyers, etc – Berry Open Gardens Festival 17 – 20 October, Southern Orchid Spectacular 11 – 13 October. Aflask list from George Serhan was also made available for review and orders.
Geoff Le Marne presented the prizes and sashes from the Dural Show. Congratulations to all the winners and place getters.
The orchid fraternity has lost two individuals in the last month – Peter Sunderland of Kimberley Orchids in Victoria. Peter was involved in the Club many years ago and was a wonderful hybridiser of cymbidiums. He was a lovely gentleman who will be missed. Our thoughts are with his wife Joyce, daugter Jenny and the rest of the family. Members were upstanding for a minute's silence. Judy Schaeffer also passed away. She had been very active in the Club in past years and her husband, Neville, had been President of the Club some years ago. They benched many plants at Club events over the years. Geoff Le Marne had visited them often in his early orchid years and Judy had always been very kind and supportive. Our thoughts are will Neville and their children Alex and Peter.
Next month we were due to have a presentation from Greg Bryant, but unfortunately he will be unable to join us. Geoff will be giving a slide presentation on this year's OSCOV show instead.
President’s ReportAt the September meeting we held our annual spring show. There were plenty of spectacular and interest-ing cymbidiums on display , so many in fact we ran out of bench space and had orchids on the floor.Congratulations to all those who participated for putting on an excellent show. Congratulations to DimitriMitsios who won Grand Champion with a well flowered and displayed Kalahari Blaze.
I realised I forgot a few thank you’s for the Dural Show. First a very big thank you to Dr Seong Tay forhis generous sponsorship of the Show . Also thanks to Terry Davis for again doing his wonderful pottingdemos to entertain and educate the public.
I also forgot to mention how great it was to see our old friends Peter Moore and Fay Harris at the show.
Unfortunately Greg Bryant is unable to give a talk in October but maybe next year….I will give a talk and slide show on the recent Orchid Society Council of Victoria Show in Victoria .
Now to the potting and dividing

Thank you to everyone who brought in plants for the Spring Show – the display was wonderful. Congratulations to Dimitri Mitsios for Grand Champion with Kalahari Blaze, flowered beautifully. Well done to all the winners, there were some fabulous plants for the judges to consider and choose from.
Well, that's all the shows over for this year and all of them have been a success. Thank you to everyone for helping out over this busy period. See the Meeting Minutes for the review of the financial results forDural.
ONE MORE MEETING TILL THE CHRISTMAS PARTY – WHERE HAS THE YEAR GONE?? WE WILL BE PUTTING ON OUR USUAL WONDERFUL SPREAD FOR THE EVENING, SO I HOPE WE HAVE A GOOD TURNOUT.
In the meantime, it will be great to see Geoff's pictures from the OSCOV Show. David and I also attended this year – they put on some great displays and it is also good to catch up with some of the vendors from Dural and others we don't see so often.

VALE Peter Sunderland
Peter Sunderland, from Kimberley Orchids in Melbourne passed away recently, after being unwell for some time. He was a hugely important person in the Cymbidium scene in Australia. Peter was a master hybridizer, and bred large numbers of high quality cymbidiums, which were used very successfully for the showbench, but also as cut flowers and pot plants. He presented at many of the Victorian Shows, with fabulous displays of high quality cymbidiums and on a number of occasions won the Grand Champion award. Peter, Joyce and Jenny always welcomed visitors to their nursery at Devon Meadows, south east of Melbourne. The nursery was beautifully set out and maintained, in a fabulous rural environment. There was always some great cymbidiums to admire and want. Peter will be sorely missed by all who knew him and the general cymbidium growing family. Rest in peace Peter Our thoughts and sympathies are with Joyce, Jenny and family.
VALE Judy Schaefer It is with great sadness I’m advising you of the passing of Judy Schaefer of Schaefer’s Orchids in Galston NSW. Judy passed away last week after battling illness this year. She is survived by her husband Neville and 2 children Alex and Peter. As well as running a commercial cymbidium nursery, Judy was a highly respected AOC judge. She was always very obliging and eager to help members. I was very fortunate to meet Judy early on in my cymbidium hobby, and she kindly taught me the basic cultural requirements and got me on track. Judy and Neville both made a large contribution to the Cymbidium Club in the early years. Our thoughts and condolences are with Neville, Peter and Alex at this difficult time. By Geoff Le Marne
VALE Neville Bishop Neville Bishop peacefully passed away on the 29th September, 2019. Neville Bishop was a member of Cymbidium Club Australia (NSW) and Bankstown Orchid Society. He returned to the Central Coast, and joined Central Coast and Lakes Orchid Society and Central Coast-Hunter Region Cymbidium Society. Sadly over the years Dad and I have attended funerals, and I know he has introduced me to friends from these Societies. Sadly it was Dad’s time to leave us, 93 is a good age. He loved his Cymbidiums, and growing other genre of orchids. Fishing was another passion in his life. By Gaewyn Hurst (daughter) Central Coast-Hunter Region Cymbidium Society Inc Secretary

Editor’s Report Hi everyone. Firstly I would like to apologize for not getting out the Newsletter on time last month. Many things were happening around me at the time such as sickness, storms, lack of electricity for 3 days and the increasing workload. I hope you enjoy this combined September/ October newsletter. Condolences to family and friends of Peter Sunderland, Judy Schaefer and Neville Bishop (for whom I just received the sad information).
Next month, November, is our Christmas party. Another year nearly done and dusted!!! Cheers
Sandra Cheetham
