APPLYING FOR ADMISSIONStudents are encouraged to apply to Belmont during the early fall months of their senior year. Applications for admission to Belmont are for a particular term of enrollment or the semester prior to the term in which they wish to transfer to Belmont. Requirements of materials may change from one term to another. Acceptance for one term does not necessarily indicate that admission will be granted for any other term. Admission to Belmont is competitive. Please submit the application for admission first, followed by other required application documents.

Applications for admission are considered on a rolling basis pending space available, so early submission of all application materials is strongly encouraged. Applicants will be notified of a decision as soon as possible after completing the application checklist. The application deadlines are July 1 for entry in the fall term, November 1 for entry in the spring term and May 1 for entry in the summer term. The application for admission also serves as the merit scholarship application. General academic merit scholarships are awarded to freshman applicants on a rolling basis following the offer of admission. December 1 is the application file completion deadline for consideration for Belmont’s most competitive merit scholarships. Notification of these top scholarships will be communicated by early February. Applications completed via The Common Application® and Belmont’s online or paper application are accepted and processed with equal consideration.

RE-ENROLLMENTFormer Belmont students applying for re-enrollment are considered on the same basis as new applicants to the University for that particular term. If a student has attended any other college or university since the last term of enrollment at Belmont, official transcripts must be sent. Contact the Office of Admissions to determine what particular requirements may be needed. Re-admission cannot be considered if the student has any outstanding business with Belmont or any other institution attended, whether in the form of a financial, disciplinary or academic obligation. Once those issues have been resolved and the Office of Admissions has been notified of the resolution in writing, the application will be considered. The University reserves the right to refuse admission to a student on any grounds deemed sufficient by the Belmont University administration.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS (FRESHMEN & TRANSFERS)In addition to the application steps listed previously, international applicants must also complete these additional steps:

1. Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by submitting one of the following: official TOEFL scores (required minimum of 550 PBT or 80 iBT), official IELTS scores (required minimum of 6.5), official SAT scores (required minimum Reading test score of 29) or ACT scores (required minimum of 23 English) or by successful completion of ELS Language Center Level 112.

2. In place of official high school transcripts, all freshman applicants must submit course-by-course transcript evaluations of their high school transcripts from one of our approved evaluation companies. Transfer applicants who have completed less than 24 hours of college work (approximately one year) at the time of application must submit course-by-course transcript evaluations of both high school and university work as well as ACT or SAT scores. Transfer applicants who have completed more than 24 hours of college work (approximately one year) at the time of application must submit course-by-course transcript evaluations for all college work; high school evaluations are not required and ACT/SAT scores are not required. Please see the admissions website (belmont.edu/internationalapp) for a list of approved evaluation companies and detailed instructions.

3. In order to be issued an I-20 for the desired entry term, international applicants must be admitted by October 1, March 1 or June 1 in order to enroll for the spring, summer or fall terms, respectively. Application deadlines for international students take priority over all other application deadlines.

ADMISSION TO THE HONORS PROGRAM Applicants for freshman admission with a high school grade point average of 3.75 (4.0 scale) or higher and an ACT composite score of 30, or SAT of 1390 or higher who wish to be considered for the Honors program should complete the admission application by December 1. Additional information can be found online at belmont.edu/honors.

ADMISSION TO THE SCHOOL OF NURSING All applicants to the School of Nursing must submit official test scores from either SAT or ACT. A nursing applicant must be a licensed registered nurse or have a previous bachelor’s degree to be exempt from this requirement. Further information may be found online at belmont.edu/nursing.

ADMISSION TO PROGRAMS REQUIRING AN AUDITION OR PORTFOLIOAn audition or portfolio review is required for admission to the following programs:

• School of Music

• Department of Art

• Department of Theatre & Dance

• Songwriting major

Applicants who wish to pursue a major in these areas will first be considered for admission to the University after all application materials are received. Applicants who audition or submit a portfolio prior to all application materials being received will not learn of an admissions decision into the program until after being informed of an admissions decision. Applicants who are academically admissible to the University but do not have a successful audition or portfolio may choose to enroll at Belmont in another major. An applicant who is academically inadmissible to the University cannot be considered for admission to the College of Visual & Performing Arts (School of Music, Department of Art, Department of Theatre & Dance) or the Songwriting major. An applicant may audition or submit a portfolio while awaiting the general University admissions decision.

ADMISSION TO THE SONGWRITING MAJORApplicants are required to submit a portfolio of their compositions in order to be considered for admission to the songwriting major. An email with details regarding the admission and portfolio process as well as portfolio deadlines will be sent to an applicant upon submission of the University application. Additional information can be found online at belmont.edu/songwriting.

ADMISSION TO THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC Applicants to the School of Music who wish to major or minor in music are required to complete an audition. An email with details regarding the admission and audition process for a music major will be sent to an applicant upon submission of the University application. (The applicants must select a music major to receive the audition instruction email.) Those students wishing to pursue a minor in music (classical study in voice or instrument) should contact the School of Music (SOM) at [email protected]. Additional information, including dates for audition days, can be found online at belmont.edu/music.

ADMISSION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF ARTApplicants for the Art Education, Design Communications, Experiential Design and Studio Art programs are required to submit a portfolio of their work. An email with details regarding the admission and portfolio process for an art major will be sent to an applicant upon submission of the University application. Incoming freshmen who wish to be considered for a Leu Art Scholarship should submit the portfolio by the December 1 priority deadline. The art department will contact scholarship finalists with invitations to participate in personal interviews with art faculty to determine the final Leu Art Scholarship recipients. ADMISSION TO THE BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN THEATREApplicants are required to either complete an audition or submit a portfolio depending upon the applicant’s area of emphasis. HOW TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID1. Complete the application for admission. You must be accepted for admission before being considered for merit scholarships

and/or need-based institutional financial aid. Freshman applicants are required to submit their completed application file by the December 1 priority date to be considered for our most competitive merit scholarships.

2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at fafsa.gov. Designate Belmont as a recipient of your Student Aid Report (SAR) by listing Belmont’s Title IV code 003479. The 2019–20 Undergraduate FAFSA Priority Filing Date is December 1, 2018. Admitted undergraduate students who submit their FAFSA by December 1, 2018, and include Belmont as a recipient of their FAFSA data, will be included in the first round of financial aid packaging. Financial aid packaging for 2019–20 will continue thereafter on a rolling basis.

3. When you receive your SAR, review it for accuracy. If you are selected for verification, be sure to complete the verification worksheet available online at belmont.edu/sfs.

TYPES OF FINANCIAL AIDFinancial aid is used by families in almost all income brackets and should probably be thought of as “money management” rather than aid. Almost 73 percent of Belmont students receive some form of financial aid. An important distinction in financial aid is between merit-based and need-based aid. Merit-based aid is based upon the student’s academic record or outstanding talent in an artistic or athletic capacity. Merit-based aid typically comes in the form of scholarships. Need-based aid is based upon the student and family’s financial need as determined by the FAFSA. Need based-aid comes in the form of grants, loans and on-campus employment.

NEED-BASED AIDBelmont is authorized to award the following types of need-based federal aid (for U.S. citizens or permanent residents): Pell Grants, Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (SEOG), Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans and Federal Work Study. Grants are the best type of aid since they do not need to be paid back. Educational loans are meant to help reduce your immediate out-of-pocket expenses. Many student loans are even deferred and do not require a payment as long as you are in college. You may use earnings from on-campus employment, commonly called Work Study, to assist with your spending money. Further details on these types of financial assistance can be found online at fafsa.gov.

The state of Tennessee offers need-based and merit-based grants, including those through the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship Program (HOPE). Submission of the FAFSA is required to receive HOPE funding, regardless of need. Details on qualifications and award amounts can be found online at tn.gov/collegepays.

FRESHMAN MERIT-BASED AIDBelmont awards a variety of merit-based scholarships to qualified admitted freshman each year. Listed below is general information on the scholarship process and the different types of scholarships awarded by the University. More specific information can be found online at belmont.edu/merit.

GENERAL ACADEMIC FRESHMAN MERIT SCHOLARSHIPSGeneral academic merit scholarships range from $3,000 to $10,000 annually. Admitted freshmen are considered for these awards following admission on a rolling basis as funds remain available. The application for admission to the University also serves as the application for academic merit scholarship. Admitted freshmen with academic credentials that meet or exceed the University’s freshman class profile (ACT composite score of 27 or SAT score of 1213, with a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.7) are considered competitive candidates for a general academic merit scholarship.

NAMED SCHOLARSHIPSCandidates for the University’s highest academic merit scholarships (including the Presidential, Hearst and Faculty Scholar awards) must have completed their application for admission to Belmont by December 1. Those selected for further consideration in the named scholarship candidate process will have already qualified for the highest level of general academic scholarship (currently $10,000). A named scholarship usually replaces a general academic scholarship previously awarded. Each year, there are approximately five freshman Presidential Scholars, one Hearst Scholar and 175 Faculty Scholars (from the pool of approximately 8,000 freshman applicants). The University will notify you should you qualify for these scholarships. Notification of these top scholarships will be communicated by early February.

Presidential ScholarshipsBelmont’s most competitive scholarship, awarded to approximately five incoming freshmen, covering full tuition, room, board, books and fees. Consideration criteria include a minimum ACT Composite score of 30, or SAT score of 1390, an average cumulative high school grade point average of 3.5, top 10 percent class rank and significant individual achievement. Finalists are invited for an on-campus interview.

Of those awarded a Presidential Scholarship, the average cumulative high school grade point average is 4.40, the average ACT Composite score is 34.66 and the average SAT score is 1560.

William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship One scholarship covering full tuition, room, board, books and fees for an incoming freshman from a diverse background with outstanding academic and leadership records.

Faculty ScholarshipsApproximately 175 $15,000 awards to the top incoming freshmen who qualified for the Presidential Scholarship.

OTHERLeadership ScholarshipsTwenty-five $3,000 awards to incoming freshmen who demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities through their resume of activities.

National Merit FinalistsStudents named a National Merit Finalist are automatically named a Belmont Faculty Scholar as well, with a Belmont merit-based scholarship totaling no less than $15,000.

Church-Related Vocation/Service Scholarship Students who are in service or wish to pursue a career in a church-related vocation; i.e. pastoral, education, music, youth or mission ministries are eligible for $500 per semester (fall and spring only).

RESTRICTED GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPSBelmont is privileged to receive a number of small restricted scholarships from the gifts of friends and alumni of Belmont.
