Dear Friends,
The Dow Jones News Fund operated in 2019 in the harshest journalistic environment since its founding some 60 years ago—an environment marked by shrinking local and regional newsrooms in the face of ever-stronger competition from social media for readers and advertising and by constant presidential attacks on journalists as producers of “Fake News” and “the enemy of the people.”
“Journalism is under a lot of stress,” Joe Stephens, professor of journalism at Princeton University and a former investigative reporter, observed at the time. “The economic model is falling apart. Newspapers are laying off people. Local newspapers are closing. There are a lot of political attacks.” Yet, against this difficult background, the News Fund successfully delivered in 2019 on its mission “to promote journalism careers” and its vision of helping shape newsrooms “staffed by well-trained innovative journalists who reflect America’s diversity and are dedicated to a free, strong and fair press.”
The basic statistics are revealing. The Fund attracted almost 800 applicants for its flagship professional internships in summer 2019 and placed 79 college students’ internships against a goal of 80. Of the 79 internships, 18 were digital media, 15 data journalism, 27 business reporting and 19 multimedia.
Many news organizations returned, among them The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Reuters, USA Today and American City Business Journals, once again the top provider with 10 internships. The growing participation of nonprofits was also evident, doubling from the prior year to 10 and including the St. Louis American, National Public Radio in Washington, and WNYC, a byproduct of our partnership with the Emma Bowen Foundation and the Institute for Nonprofit News.
In our pursuit of diversity, the 2019 results were especially strong and gratifying, since the nation’s newsrooms are still overwhelmingly white. For the first time, 50% of our interns were from diverse backgrounds; 19% African American, 15%

Asian American, 8% Hispanic 7% multi-racial and 1% Native American.
For the second consecutive year, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provided a grant to support summer journalism workshops on health and wellness issues for high school students in underserved communities. The RWJF increased the grant to $50,000 from $30,000, enabling the Fund to co-sponsor 10 workshops, up from seven a year earlier.
With college costs and student debt rising rapidly, the News Fund increased the scholarships for successful interns to $1,500 from $1,000. Also important in our pursuit of diversity was the establishment of an Intern Assistance Fund with a $10,000 grant from the Good Words Foundation headed by Erin Schulte Collier, a Fund alumna, with the aim of covering special financial needs starting in summer 2020.
All of these accomplishments and many more, as discussed throughout this annual report, reflect the talent and dedication of Linda Shockley, managing director of the News Fund since 2014; Heather Taylor, manager of digital media and programs, and Denise Jester, manager of finance and administration.
Again in 2019, there were several changes in the News Fund’s board of directors. In May, Anna Sedgley, former chief operating officer of Dow Jones, was elected a director. In July, Mark Musgrave, chief people officer of Dow Jones, resigned as a Fund director with his departure from Dow Jones, and in September, Kamilah Mitchell-Thomas, who succeeded Mark as chief people officer, was elected to the board.
In closing, I want to express my gratitude to the News Fund staff, the residency directors of the summer internship program and Fund alumni as well as to my fellow directors, News Corp, Dow Jones and the Dow Jones Foundation for their support of the Dow Jones News Fund and its work to strengthen American journalism.

Alumni are central to the continuing success of the Dow Jones News Fund. They lead the industry, they teach aspiring journalists and they give back again and again. Our database has grown from index cards to digital files holding more than 18,000 records on high school workshop participants, high schooljournalism teachers, college professors and former summer interns. We continue to look for and find members of the DJNF family.
It may be that 2019 was our most engaged for alumni so far. Five alumni serve among the 14 members of the Fund’s board of directors: Richard Levine (1961), board president and retired Dow Jones vice president for news; Karen Miller Pensiero (1984), managing editor of The Wall Street Journal; LaSharah Bunting (2000), director of journalism at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; Garry D. Howard (1981), director of corporate initiatives at American City Business Journals, and Gail Griffin (1992), head of digital platforms for T. Rowe Price.
Ms. Griffin reorganized alumni efforts, recruiting committee heads to focus on fundraising, media partnerships and college outreach. Chris Kraeuter (1998), Michael Ryan (1976), Steve Bien-Aimè (2002), Carrie Melago (1997), Jennifer Hicks (2001), Nicole Collins Bronzan (2000) and others, took a strategic approach resulting in a varied group of media partners that yielded 79 internships.
Alumni encouraged their employers to hire DJNF interns, they joined staff at job fairs,
visited their alma matters and dropped in on the internship residencies. Brittany Hite (2007) and Emily Veach (2004) developed a growing slack channel and mentoring program.
Several 2019 interns in New York City struggled with commuting costs; a hurricane forced an intern out of her apartment for several days, another ate once a day while trying to make student loan payments.
We helped each of them but as alumni shared their own stories, we decided to seek financial support.
The Good Words foundation, led by Erin Schulte Collier (1997), stepped in with a donation to createthe Intern Assistance Fund for 2020 interns.
Erin explained her thinking this way: “I want to help make sure that any student who qualifies for a DJNF internship, regardless of income, is able to take the internship. Harmful ‘traditions’ like unpaid internships have left us with newsrooms that are too homogenous to be as effective as they could be, and mean that important stories go untold and great journalists may not get the chance they deserve.”
DJNF has been at the forefront of diversity efforts for more than five decades and has always believed interns deserve to be paid and treated professionally. With support and guidance of an ever widening alumni network, we expect to continue fulfilling our mandate and meeting those challenges.

Alumni Pool Resources for Future Journalists
Spurred by a Temple University-based survey, which found that nearly half of all college students experience food insecurity, Dow Jones News Fund alumni stepped up and formed an Intern Assistance Fund to help interns meet their financial needs during their internships.
The fund was seeded by a $10,000 donation from Good Words foundation, founded by Erin Schulte Collier, a 1997 News Fund alumna.
“I know that I would not have had the career that I did without the DJNF internship or my connections to the DJNF network; I’m convinced it helped me stand out in a crowded field early on in my career,” Collier said.
Collier’s support will aid students who have trouble paying for food, commuting or affordable housing during their summer internships. It will also provide support when emergencies strike.

In 2019, the Fund trained and placed 79 undergraduate and graduate students to work as data and digital journalists, business reporters and multiplatform editors in paid internships at 65 of the nation’s leading news organizations.

DATA JOURNALISM
Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE trained 15 journalists at the University of Missouri to obtain and analyze data, visualize information and employ other computer-assisted reporting methods. Among them are six students selected by the Emma Bowen Foundation in partnership with the Institute for Nonprofit News through a grant supported by the Democracy Fund. DIGITAL MEDIA
Eighteen students, including two Emma Bowen fellows, refined their digital media skills at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. Led by Michael Wong, director of career services, they were prepped to handle video, photography, social media, data visualization and web design before working for digital-first media, television and radio stations.
During the nine day program, the interns worked as a team to produce When The Dust Settles, a multimedia project on redevelopment in downtown Phoenix.

The digital media interns spent 10 days at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University sharpening their digital skills and creating When the Dust Settles, a multimedia project that examines the development boom in downtown Phoenix.
The digital journalists hit downtown Phoenix to interview residents, business owners and artists impacted by the changes. What they found were booming downtown growth, food deserts, a lack of affordable housing and gentrification in the arts district. After 48 hours, they packaged their original reporting in a digital publication that includes videos, audio clips, interactive features and a podcast with five Phoenix residents.

The Dow Jones News Fund brought business reporters to New York University to learn from top journalists about finance, investing, mergers and acquisitions and labor issues before interning at respected business outlets and digital news services.
For the fifth summer American City Business Journals hosted a business reporting program for 10 interns to work at ACBJ publications. The program was co-directed by ACBJ’s director of corporate intitiatives and DJNF alumnus Garry D. Howard (’81).
Both programs were led by Paul Glader, director of The McCandlish Phillips Journalism Institute at The King’s College.

Trayes Scholar
SWENSON NAMEDTRAYES SCHOLAR
Allison Swenson, a 2019 Dow Jones News Fund multiplatform editing intern at the Associated Press, was named the 16th Edward Trayes Scholar.
Trayes praised Swenson for her professional bearing and attitude throughout the Temple residency program. He said her day-by-day performance was consistently among those at the top. She was very engaged, asked good questions and she was motivated to learn as much as possible.
“It is all of the above plus her other professional and personal qualities that put her solidly in the
company of previous recipients of the Edward Trayes Scholar Award. She has the intellect and skill sets to succeed in today’s world of journalism, wherever she may go,” said Trayes.
Swenson, a Columbia Journalism School graduate, interned at the Associated Press East Region desk in New York City following her training at Temple.
Christina Paciolla, AP news editor for Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey, praised Swenson’s performance.
“Ali absolutely thrived in her role as an editing desk intern. Her news judgment, AP style knowledge and communication skills with reporters were very impressive. She felt like a regular, longtime member of our team, not just a temporary summer editor.”
As the Trayes Scholar, Swenson received a $1,000 scholarship endowed by the O’Toole Family Foundation of Short Hills, New Jersey, which began the scholarships in 2004 to honor Trayes. Paula and Terry O’Toole, a 1979 copy editing intern at The Wall Street Journal, have donated a total of $20,000.

EMERGING JOURNALISTS
The Dow Jones News Fund selected 16 college students to receive free registrations to six journalism industry conferences through its Emerging Journalists Program. The aim is to offer opportunities for diverse students whether at universities or community colleges to build their skills and professional networks at these important gatherings.
The 2019 winners were selected from 59 applicants, they attended the Asian American Journalists Association convention in Atlanta, Investigative Reporters and Editors in Houston, the National Association of Black Journalists in Miami, the Native American Journalists Association in Prior Lake, Minnesota, the Online News Association in New Orleans and Excellence In Journalism in San Antonio.

Twelve journalism instructors from Hispanic-Serving Institutions traveled to the U.S., Mexico border region to participate in the 10th annual Dow Jones News Fund Multimedia Training Academy at the University of Texas in El Paso. The instructors received training in the latest digital tools and storytelling techniques. During their time at UTEP they reported on El Paso community issues for Borderzine.
The program was directed by Kate Gannon, Borderzine digital content editor. Trainers included multimedia consultant, Doug Mitchell; independent radio reporter, Monica Ortiz Uribe; and broadcast TV veteran Andrew Valencia.

Eight professors from Historically Black Colleges and Universities spent one week in Bowling Green, Kentucky, learning the latest trends for the digital newsroom during the Fund’s Digital News Workshop at Western Kentucky University, led by Dr. Pam Johnson.
During the week-long workshop, faculty members were grouped in teams. Each team produced a digital story about a health topic and how it affects diverse populations in the WKU campus community.
The training included new curriculum on drones, 360 cameras and whiteboarding, as well as podcasting, graphic design, web design, video and data visualization. Professors worked in teams to produce three multimedia projects focused on mental health, refugees, and sports.
The eight HBCU faculty are: Semaj Robinson, Alabama A & M University; Kangming Ma, Hampton University; Mark Beckford and Yanick Rice Lamb, Howard University; Emily Burch Harris, North Carolina A&T University, Brett Chambers, North Carolina Central University; David Marshall, Morgan State University, and Ladonia Randle, Texas Southern University.
The professors’ coaches were Nancie Dodge, former adjunct faculty at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University; Ron DeMarse, WKU School of Journalism & Broadcasting and Kara Williams Glenn, WKU Department of Communication.

SUMMER JOURNALISM WORKSHOPSWith support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Dow Jones News Fund co-sponsored 10 summer high school journalism workshops that focused on health and wellness reporting themes. These programs offered a diverse group of students, who lack access to journalism training or face barriers to pursue media careers, the opportunity to get hands-on experience producing print and digital content like videos, high resolution photos, podcasts, articles and more — and using those newly acquired skills to produce journalism focused on health and wellness topics.
The Mosaic Journalism Workshop led by the California Chicano News Media Association at San Jose State University empowered young journalists to report and write stories important to them – from housing costs to poverty to immigration status and impacts on the health and welfare of children and adults in Silicon Valley. Their stories were published online by The Mercury News. Workshop director: Joe Rodriguez
Marshall University High School Journalism Workshop had students report on the effect of the opioid crisis on local communities in Huntington, West Virginia, while embedding themselves in The Herald Dispatch newsroom. Their videos, podcasts and stories were published on The Herald Dispatch website. Workshop director: Burnis Morris
The Hugh N. Boyd Journalism Diversity Workshop at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, taught basic journalism and video skills to students from New Jersey. Students covered mental and behavioral health issues such as stress, anxiety, depression and opioid addiction. Their work was featured on local TV, published online, and shared at a community forum. The Peace Sullivan/James Ansin High School Journalism & New Media Workshop at the University of Miami had students cover the issues facing young people, such as college debt, ICE activity, gun violence, climate change, political dysfunction and health care. During the Donald W. Carson Journalism Diversity Workshop at the University of Arizona, local teens learned a variety of multimedia journalism skills as they covered the Campus Health Service and reported on stories that impacted their peers, such as access to health care, vaccinations and nutrition. Journalism in July at the University of Texas, El Paso, taught local teens digital and broadcast journalism as they covered health issues that plague the U.S.-Mexico border region such as obesity, diabetes and depression. Workshop director: Dino Chiecchi
Students at the Andy Harvey Broadcast Workshop at Northern Arizona University reported on the physical and mental well-being of the indigenous population in Flagstaff, Arizona, as they produced multimedia content for a live-to-tape broadcast, website and social media. The Howard University Multicultural Media Academy taught Washington, D.C. students how to report, write and broadcast stories about the causes of poor health outcomes in their communities using solution-oriented storytelling. Workshop director: Yanick Rice Lamb
Students at the ThreeSixty Journalism News Reporter Academy at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, learned about health equity from experts at the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. Each student worked closely with seasoned journalists from the Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press. Their stories were published in the ThreeSixty Journalism fall magazine. The Oklahoma Institute for Diversity in Journalism at the University of Oklahoma brought a diverse group of students together to learn broadcast and digital journalism. Students covered issues around mental illness in the community for the Norman Transcript. Workshop director: Yvette Walker

Six Students Win High School Workshop Competition
Six high school journalists from California, Florida and Minnesota won college scholarships in Dow Jones News Fund’s 2019 summer journalism workshops essay competition. Students are recognized for the outstanding journalism they produce at a DJNF-supported summer workshops.
Four of the winners attended the James Ansin/Peace Sullivan High School Journalism and New Media Workshop at the University of Miami, directed by Fred Blevens and Sam Terilli.
David Perez of Miami, Florida, won Best Data Journalism for his article and accompanying graphics about the gender wage gap in Miami.

Caroline Wheeler-Hollis of St. John, Florida, won Best Overall Health Reporting for her article about the lack of sex education in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Thomas Morcillo of Coral Gables, Florida, won Best Photography for his slideshow of Miami parents, students and teachers impacted by increased active shooter drills in schools.
Alexander Someillan of Doral, Florida, won Best Videography for his piece about the growing organic, farm-to-table trend at Miami restaurants.
The Best Reporting award went to Julie Hernandez of San Jose, California, from the Mosaic
Journalism Workshop at San Jose State University, directed by Joe Rodriguez. Hernandez reported on the plight of couples facing separation from their U.S.-born children.
Ayo Olagbaju of Minneapolis was given an “Award of Excellence” for her article about a synchronized swim team with a social justice mission produced at ThreeSixty Journalism’s News Reporter Academy at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, directed by Chad Caruthers.
Five winners were awarded $1,500 college scholarships from the Fund for the 2020-2021 school year. Olagbaju, who received an Award of Excellence, won $1,000.
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS
The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) named Melissa Falkowski, a journalism teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School at Parkland, Florida, the 2019 National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year. Four teachers were honored as Distinguished Advisers and three others were named Special Recognition Advisers.
The National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year Awards program is managed and sponsored by CSPA and co-sponsored by the Dow Jones News Fund, with support from Poynter Institute for Media Studies and The Wall Street Journal.
The honorees were presented plaques on March 21, 2019, during a luncheon at Columbia University in New York City.
The News Fund began the journalism teacher awards program in 1960, which has honored more than 350 educators. The Fund became a co-sponsor in 2017. CSPA continues to administer the awards annually.
“Melissa Falkowski has proven herself an exceptional teacher and representative for the scholastic media community,” said Linda Shockley, DJNF managing director.
Additional honorees include four Distinguished Advisers: Erinn Harris, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Alexandria, Virginia; Debra Klevens, Parkway West High School, Ballwin, Missouri; David Ragsdale, Clarke Central High School, Athens, Georgia; and Julia Satterthwaite, Monta Vista High School, Cupertino, California.
Also named as Special Recognition Advisers are Tom Hayes, Ben Davis High School, Indianapolis; Liz Palmer, duPont Manual High School, Louisville, Kentucky; and Michael Reeves, James Bowie High School, Austin, Texas.
