On behalf of the New Zealand Association of Musculoskeletal Medicine, it is my pleasure to invite and welcome you to the 2018 Scientific Meeting titled: “The Young and the Reckless-Musculoskeletal Issues in the Young” held in conjunction with the Australasian Faculty of Musculoskeletal Medicine and the Australian Association of Musculoskeletal Medicine.

Our 2016 conference in Christchurch dealt with “Busted Boomers, Musculoskeletal Issues in the Muscle in the Older Adult” and this year in Auckland, we are sure you will enjoy a focus on the other end of the life course with this year’s theme.

We have gathered speakers from across the spectrum from sports physicians to exercise and developmental scientists and clinicians dealing with all areas of youth health, disability and pain. There will be something for everyone who deals with the young whether it be often or occasionally. There will be emerging scientific information as well as practical sessions.

We have been extremely fortunate in attracting keynote speakers Carolyn Broderick, staff specialist at The Children’s Hospital in Westmead, Sydney and Patria Hume AUT professor of Human Performance along with many of our own musculoskeletal, surgical, paediatric and pain colleagues. Sir Peter Gluckman, paediatric researcher and chief science advisor to the Prime Minister has also agreed to contribute to our thinking about developmental issues.

For you, the delegate, we hope that you will leave this conference well informed and have an enjoyable social and networking experience with colleagues from all disciplines. You are most welcome to join us for the pre-conference social outing on October 3rd. The AFMM retreat on 4th October is open to all conference attendees. Numbers are limited for both these days though, so ensure you register early for these events.

Dr Jenny KeightleyNZAMM Past President, Treasurer & Conference Convenor

Conference Objectives:

• To be stimulated, challenged and learn evidence based and clinical skills to use with your younger patients.• Understand how developmental issues can affect later musculoskeletal function and how to intervene early.• Get insight on how to manage paediatric pain from Ross Drake and the Pain Team at Starship Hospital.• Take part in practical workshops of your choice

Conference Committee:

Convenor - Dr Jenny Keightley, Dr Gary Collinson and Dr Stu Thomson

Who would benefit from this meeting?

This meeting will appeal to a wide variety of medical and allied health practitioners, including musculoskeletal physicians, general practitioners, pain physicians, ACC branch medical advisors, occupational physicians, rehabilitation physicians, sports physicians, rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons and allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, clinical nurse specialists, podiatrists, occupational therapists and manual therapists. The Meeting will also be of interest to researchers and those in bioscience.

CONVENOR’S WELCOME

NZAMM acknowledge the generosity of the Rose Hellaby Medical Scholarship Trust and the conference organisers thank the Board of Governors for their support with this Scientific Meeting.
