ent Overview

A Rich History In 1881, the world’sbest tennis players gathered in Newport for the very first U.S. National Lawn Tennis Championships. The tournament was played in Newport until 1914, eventually moving to New York and evolving to the event we now know as the US Open. Today, the coveted US Open trophies are displayed in the Museum at the Hall of Fame for fans to see year-round, with the exception of the weeks they are utilized in New York.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame preserves and promotes the history of tennis, celebrates its champions, thereby serving as a vital partner in the growth of tennis globally.

In the Museum The Museum chronicles thehistory of tennis from its origins through present day and showcases the lives and careers of the legends of tennis through an extensive collection of memorabilia, art, fashion, photos, videos, and much more.

In 2016, the ITHF completed a 15 million dollar Capital Campaign which included an expanded campus featuring an indoor tennis facility, pro shop, member lounge, fitness center, boardroom, ITHF offices, three outdoor tennis courts and a complete renovation of the Museum.

Home to the Legends of Tennis Truly a one-of-a-kind experience, Hallof Fame Weekend offers the opportunity to be part of tennis history and to spend time with tennis’ greatest champions and contributors at unique special events.

Unique Venues When its grand BellevueAvenue doors opened in 1880, the Newport Casino was the premier location for social events for Newport’s rich and famous residents. In 1987, the facility was named a National Historic Landmark in recognition of its social and sporting history and for its extraordinary architecture. Today, the site retains the incomparable charm and beauty that made it so popular at the turn of the century, while offering an extraordinary venue for sponsors to host memorable events.

More to See & Do The ITHF promotes events and activities tohonor Hall of Famers year-round through ring ceremonies, traveling exhibits and Brand Ambassadors, reaching millions of tennis fans around the globe.

The celebration of the Class of 2017 began in January with a special ceremony on court at the Australian Open in which more than 20 Hall of Famers welcomed the inductees.

If not for Rod Laver’s records, what would Pete Sampras have used as a motivating benchmark? Today, it is history-maker Serena Williams who has inspired countless young girls to pick up a racquet. Since its origins more than 50 years ago, the International Tennis Hall of Fame has been committed to preserving the remarkable stories of tennis history with the intent to inspire future generations.

As stewards of that history, the ITHF operates a world-class Museum that chronicles tennis’ origins through today. The ITHF celebrates those who have received tennis’ ultimate honor—the 252 individuals from 23 nations who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. We offer access to tennis that can be embraced at all levels, be it as a fan in the stands watching our pro tournament or a child participating in a youth clinic.

Our Mission in Action Today• Educational programming in schools using tennis as a basis for curriculum in social studies, science, and math

• Free Museum admission for kids, a unique opportunity to learn about the history of tennis, the stories of its champions, and its impact on society

• Putting racquets in the hands of kids who may not otherwise be exposed to the sport through partnerships with community youth organizations

• Access for underserved youth to interact with collegiate and pro athletes who provide motivating, positive messages

• Tennis coaching for kids and adults of all abilities

• Philanthropic support to aid growth of the game in developing nations

• Traveling museum exhibitions around the world

• Celebrations for Hall of Famers in prominent locations worldwide

Youth Tennis ProgrammingWe seek to inspire the next generation of tennis fans and future champions through building and supporting more youth tennis programming in Newport and abroad. Our ultimate goal is to develop a thriving Tennis & Education Program, which will utilize tennis as a tool for teaching life skills such as honesty, goal-setting, and healthy living to at-risk youth.

Promote Tennis HistoryWhile we remain steadfast in our efforts to preserve tennis history, preservation alone is not enough. We are committed to also promoting the sport’s rich history in innovative and cutting-edge projects including an extensive digitization of the museum collection, traveling museum exhibits, and oral history programs featuring the legends of the sport.

Build Impactful PartnershipsWe are committed to deepening our relationships with the professional tennis tours, the Grand Slams, our Hall of Famers, and many other leaders in the sport, so that we can collectively grow the sport globally. We intend to further our support of the philanthropic activities of our Hall of Famers and to work with our tennis partners around the world to foster youth tennis development.

We aspire to build impactful philanthropic programs that will provide positive experiences through tennis for people around the world. Your support will enable our vision for the future to come to fruition.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame has recently become a financial partner in the Development Fund. The program is jointly funded by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Grand Slam Development Fund, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The program is focused on the concept that the leading tennis industry organizations collaborate to develop competitive tennis opportunities for juniors worldwide.

The ultimate goal of the program is to offer players the chance to gain international competitive experience so that more nations and players will be represented in the mainstream of international tennis competition. Funds are allocated worldwide, with heavy emphasis on developing nations. The program has been a positive factor in the development of many great players, including Hall of Famer Guga Kuerten, Grand Slam champions Victoria Azarenka and Li Na, and French Open finalist Simona Halep.
