EarthCorps leverages the power of young people to ensure that people and nature thrive together. Our world needs leaders who understand how to build diverse and inclusive teams, communicate across cultures, and inspire a shared vision. EarthCorps’ environmental leadership program provides young adults with the experience, skills, and knowledge necessary to be the leaders we need to care for our planet and our people.

Corps members grow as environmental professionals by working across the Puget Sound region. They tackle projects in city parks, rural forests, and everywhere in between.

With supporters like you by our side, we have been building a diverse community of global environmental leaders from across the U.S. and around the world since 1993. Last year was no exception. We welcomed more than 50 emerging leaders from across the U.S., as well as from Brazil, Colombia, Georgia, Haiti, India, the Philippines, and Russia.

We hope that as you read our 2019 annual report you are proud of the change you are helping to inspire- change within the young people in our program as well as on our environment. Thank you for all that you do to ensure that people and nature thrive together.

With gratitude,

Steve Dubiel, Executive Director

In 2019, EarthCorps celebrated our 200,000th volunteer. This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of volunteers like Zac and Sophia, a father-daughter duo who volunteer to spend quality time together while giving back to their community. Together, Zac and Sophia have volunteered more than 72 hours! EarthCorps is thankful for the hard-working and forward-thinking volunteers who help keep Puget Sound parks healthy for future generations to enjoy.

Riparian areas, the narrow strips of land adjacent to streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, and wetlands, are an important component to the health of salmon. Restoring the vegetation in these areas helps to provide shade, which works to reduce water temperatures and supports higher oxygen levels, all of which is key to the survival of fish.

In 2019, EarthCorps helped salmon and other species thrive by caring for lands along the Green-Duwamish, Skagit, Snoqualmie, Stillaguamish, Samish, and Puyallup Rivers.

LANDS AND WATERS OF PUGET SOUND

Last summer EarthCorps worked along the Pete’s Creek Trail to Colonel Bob Peak in the Olympic National Forest. Initially constructed in the 1990s, the trail was littered with fallen trees and was so overgrown that, in some places, it was difficult to follow.

Since the trail is in a designated wilderness area, crews had to follow strict protocols to reduce disruption, including no engine use. That meant no chainsaws or brush cutters – only human-powered tools- so our hardworking crews used crosscut saws to cut through fallen trees.

“At EarthCorps, I got confident. Confident enough to lead crews. Confident enough to truly believe I could be a face of environmental work. And confident enough to commit to the idea that all kinds of faces should be a face of this work.”

Randi is Stewardship Manager for The Nature Conservancy Washington.

More than 1,000 young adults from 78 countries and 41 states have transformed into global leaders through EarthCorps. Meet some of our alumni:

“It was through my time at EarthCorps that I gained a foundational understanding that, when we take time to build strong communities centered on achieving common goals, we are most effective in our work.”

ABOUT EARTHCORPS

At EarthCorps, we believe that we have a collective responsibility to care for each other and nature, and that we need new ideas and boundless enthusiasm from across the globe to create a better world where people and nature thrive together.

EarthCorps brings together emerging environmental professionals from the United States and around the world for an intensive year of service in the Puget Sound region.

Corps members learn leadership and cross-cultural communication skills through educational workshops and through collaboratively executing technical environmental restoration projects along shorelines, trails, and in forests. They leave EarthCorps with the experience, knowledge, and commitment to sustain the health of our environment.

EarthCorps invites the community to help create a world where people and nature thrive together. We lead thousands of volunteers each year in caring for our parks and forests.
