Message from the PresidentMessage from the PresidentDear Friends:

The signifi cance of a Catholic education has never been more apparent than our current time. Challenges and temptations of a fast-paced world focus on individual needs with little

emphasis on the importance of cultivating healthy relationships, let alone building a personal relationship with the God who made us and walks with us on a daily basis. I want to take this time to thank you for supporting our mission at Lourdes Academy—one that continues to prepare students for the future.

Your generous support has a daily impact in growing our Catholic identity, contributing to academic excellence, exploring creative ways to foster enrollment, and expanding our infl uence into our local parishes and the larger community.

We’ve received national accolades for our STEM program, earned our fi fth WIAA Scholar-Athlete recognition in seven years, and conducted

service projects to benefi t the Oshkosh Area Community Pantry, Fr. Carr’s Place 2B and other organizations.

These opportunities are producing rich fruit that will certainly provide a positive impact in our Catholic parishes, the city and the world as we move into the future. This work would not be possible without your support. I ask for your continued prayers as we strive daily to make our system a signifi cant player in meeting the educational needs of children in Oshkosh and the surrounding region.

Grace and Peace,

John DineganPresident

What’s Inside

A Living Legacy! In 2001, Harold and Sally Eichstadt started an endow-ment fund at the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation to provide tuition assistance to families at Lourdes Academy. Each year, they added to the fund with the goal of seeing it reach one million dollars. Sally passed away in 2013, but Harold continued to work toward their goal. In June 2019, Harold achieved it...just weeks before his 102nd birthday. “Thanks a Million” Harold for making Catholic education possible for families in our community.

teachers. Strong teachers make for strong schools. It’s important to recognize them and show them they are appreciated. Hopefully this fund will make that hap-pen even more in the future.”

As its president, Buttke continues to guide the Foun-dation Board toward strengthening Lourdes Academy. As a result of the strategic plan developed for Lourdes Academy in 2018, the Foundation Board created the Lourdes Alumni Association to engage alumni and give them opportunities to connect with fellow graduates across the country.

“The Alumni Association needed to have a home and it seemed to fi t well within the Foundation, which exists to support Lourdes Academy. Our goal is bet-ter alumni engagement, from providing opportunities for alumni to connect wherever they are throughout the country to assisting new graduates and students through mentorships.”

The Alumni Association is currently planning an all-class reunion to celebrate Lourdes High School’s 60th anniversary in 2019-2020.

“I have a legacy of giving back from my parents, who were products of parochial education,” Buttke ex-plained. “My mom was Lutheran, and my dad was Catholic, but they both strongly believed in parochial school education. I carried that forward and felt I had received a good experience academically and wanted that for my son. He and his wife, Chelsea (Alt) are both Lourdes alumni, and they want that for their fi ve children who are all enrolled at Lourdes Academy.”

Buttke appreciates the family atmosphere she’s found at Lourdes over the decades and wants to see that continue for future students. She also feels a great sense of pride at the accomplishments of the alumni coming out of Lourdes and how they’ve contributed back to their community.

“I have come to believe in and appreciate more with my involvement with Lourdes Academy over the years how critical it is for the Catholic church to have parochial education as an option for educating young people in their faith. It’s an option we should always have, and I don’t want to see it go away.”

Mary Buttke fi rst came to Lourdes High School in 1966 but her tenure at Lourdes didn’t end when she crossed the stage at graduation. She has been involved in numerous different ways for more than 50 years as a student, alumnus, parent, grandpar-ent, board member and many other roles in between. Regardless of the role, what matters is the passion she brings to the job.

Among her involvements, Buttke served as a Booster Club offi cer from 1995-1999 while her son, Dan, was in high school. She joined the Lourdes Foundation Board in 2002 and has served as its president since 2010.

“After Dan graduated, I was looking for a way to get involved,” Buttke said. “I was invited to be on the Foundation Board. Our job was to monitor invest-ments and donations before the funds were moved to the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation.” Since the relocation of the funds, the role of the Foun-dation Board has changed to become a more active board. The Foundation purchased Lourdes Academy’s Central Business Offi ce and the Unifi ed A+ Storage Units and has managed the properties for the past decade. It also monitors funds raised for endowments, scholarships and the building project and helps set goals for fund growth.

“We work closely with the Board of Trustees and the advancement director to advance planned giv-ing initiatives,” Buttke added. “We have to be good stewards of the money donors have entrusted to us to ensure the successful future of Lourdes Academy.”

Buttke does more than manage funds. She has gener-ously supported Lourdes Academy’s initiatives. She do-nated a gift of stock to the capital campaign to build a new school and supports Lourdes annually through cash gifts. When Lourdes set a goal to establish a fund to support teacher salaries, Buttke was one of the do-nors who provided the seed money for the Bill Behring Staff Endowment fund.

“Having a degree in education makes me recognize the value of our teachers,” Buttke said. “And having experienced outstanding teachers like Bill Behring, who was also Dan’s teacher, I wanted to be involved at the ground level of starting an endowment fund for

rector of donor services for OACF, is a liaison between Lourdes Academy and the greater Oshkosh commu-nity. Grabner has helped secure funding for books and reading materials, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) programs, career development programs and fi nancial literacy.

Understanding the needs that exist in the commu-nity and listening to donors to best understand how they wish to direct their support helps Grabner match donors with projects, including initiatives at Lourdes Academy.

“We are blessed to work with Karlene and the Osh-kosh Area Community Foundation to establish goals and grow our resources for the future,” said System President John Dinegan.

In 2007, Lourdes Academy partnered with the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation (OACF) to help manage a group of funds that had been established to sup-port the system. The funds ranged from acorn funds to mature endowment funds that support everything from tuition assistance to facilities improvements and band equipment.

Since 2007, the funds have grown by 215 percent, providing valuable resources that support families in need of tuition assistance; technology and facilities improvements; and dedicated staff to name a few.

In addition to Lourdes Academy’s funds, OACF staff works to promote initiatives and programs at Lourdes to its donors who have an affi nity for Catholic educa-tion. Karlene Grabner, 1992 Lourdes alumnus and di-

Catholic schools. The generous gift through their be-quest will help ensure high quality, faith-based educa-tion is available to all families in the community who desire it regardless of income. Support for tuition as-sistance is a great need at Lourdes Academy as nearly half of all students receive tuition assistance.

The additional funds helped Lourdes Academy provide fi ve full-tuition scholarships to qualifying freshmen, easing the fi nancial burden for families moving from middle school to high school. The Williams’ fund will also help large families attend Lourdes with a new multi-student discount program.

“Tuition for families with four, fi ve, six or more children can be intimidating, but we never want cost to be the factor that keeps families from attending Lourdes Academy,” said System President John Dinegan. “We support our families who are open to life and desire an educational experience that combines academics and

Supporting the organizations and programs you care about most doesn’t have to end after you’re gone. In fact, your giving can increase and make an even greater impact.

In 2008, John and Valois Williams could have never imagined what their impact on education at Lourdes Academy would be after establishing the John E. And Valois M. Williams Tuition Assistance Fund with a $10,000 gift. After John and Valois passed, the true impact of their gift came to fruition when their siz-able bequest was given to Lourdes Academy. With this bequest, the amount of assistance available to families increased exponentially, allowing Lourdes to be more intentional in how it awards tuition assistance.

Although the Williams did not have children of their own, they were strong believers in the benefi ts of a Catholic education, and wanted to help families attend

faith formation.”

For John and Valois Williams, their foresight became their legacy—one that will benefi t families for gen-erations to come. Their tuition assistance fund opens doors for families to experience an incredible faith-based education that will prepare students for college and beyond.10

Scholarships

MissionIn partnership with families, parishes and the community, Lourdes Academy provides a family environment in which students can achieve academic excellence, develop strong moral character, live as authentically Catholic disciples, and contribute positively to their communities.

VisionInspired by Our Lady of Lourdes and rooted in our Catholic faith, Lourdes Academy forms and challenges students to realize their God-given potential.

Thank You for Your PhilanthropyLourdes Academy appreciates the generosity of its donors, staff, parents, alumni, volunteers and friends. The 2018-2019 Annual Report recognizes everyone who contributed to Lourdes Academy from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019. Thank you for your support.

The Advancement offi ce has made every effort to publish accurate contrib-utor information in this report. Please accept our sincere apologies for any spelling errors, omissions, or other inaccuracies. To report an error, please contact Karen Boehm at (920) 426-3626, ext. 546 or email her at [email protected] so we can correct our records.

Planned Giving & Other OpportunitiesThe estate plans you make now ensure that Lourdes Academy’s missionand traditions are transferred from one generation to the next. Plannedgiving allows your loyalty and generosity to continue beyond a lifetime.Planned gifts include bequests, charitable annuities, remainder trusts, life insurance policies and securities.

In most cases, planned gifts not only benefi t students and children, but can benefi t the donor as well. This is because many planned gifts can be struc-tured to allow the donor to retain income from or the use of “gifted” prop-erty during his or her lifetime. Planned gifts can also be structured to reduce and, in some cases, eliminate income, capital gains, and estate taxes.

If you are interested in making a planned gift, including Lourdes Academy in your estate plan, or if you would like a list of area attorneys with tax and estate planning expertise, please contact Karen Boehm at (920) 426-3626, ext. 546 or email her at [email protected].
