FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Should I bring cash or use my Credit Card instead? We recommend using a credit card while in Scandinavia as major credit cards (American Express, Diners Club, Visa, EuroCard, and Mastercard) are honored at hotels, stores, and restaurants, and also accepted in taxis. Please note that some kiosks and retailers in Europe use a Chip and PIN system instead of the magnetic strip technology. Contact your credit card company or bank to see if this option is available and also to notify them that you will be traveling outside the US. If the Chip and PIN option is not available, ATM machines are readily available in larger cities. Cash may be exchanged at most hotels and possibly larger stores in major cities; however, the best rate of exchange is obtained at a bank or post office. We do not recommend taking travelers checks as they are not widely

accepted. For more information, see pages 20-21.

What is the difference between an adapter and a converter? An adapter (which changes the physical plug) and/or converter (which changes the electric current) are necessary if you plan to use an appliance (curling iron, flat iron, rollers, etc.) in Scandinavia. Please note, if your appliance has dual voltage you may still need an adapter for the plug. When packing your electronic items for travel, please review the converter electric current level to make sure it is the same or greater than the items you are planning on using. If you plan on utilizing or transporting a sleep apnea machine, please remember to pack an extension cord & adapter plug to ensure proper function. Most hotels in Scandinavia will have an iron and hair dryer available. You can also purchase dual voltage appliances (travel appliances) before leaving the US. Adaptors are available in the Brekke Store at www.BrekkeTours.com.

Can I connect to the Internet while in Scandinavia? Wired or wireless Internet is usually available at hotels but there may be a fee for use. Most hotels will also have a lobby computer for guest use. Internet cafes are widespread in the larger cities. They offer pay as you go for Internet service, computer usage, etc.

Can I use my cell phone in Scandinavia? Unless your US-owned cell phone is GSM dual band, it will NOT work in Scandinavia or Europe. US cell phones are not compatible with GSM standards; however, you can purchase one abroad for use. Contact your cell phone service provider regarding international plans and service outside the US.

Page 5: 2017 HELPFUL HINTS - Brekke Tours · For Escorted Tour Participants: Airport transfers in Scandinavia are included for passengers arriving/departing on designated flights of Brekke’s

How do I get from the airport to my hotel? How much will it cost? For Escorted Tour Participants: Airport transfers in Scandinavia are included for passengers arriving/departing on designated flights of Brekke’s escorted tours. Passengers on other flights or dates are required to provide their own transportation to the tour hotel at their own expense. After deplaning and collecting your luggage, you will proceed through Passport Control (a valid passport is the only document necessary for travel to Scandinavia). You will see two exits: green if you have nothing to declare and red if you have something to declare. Choose the appropriate exit. After leaving the Customs area, continue to the Arrival Hall where you will meet your tour director.

For Independent Travelers: To transfer from the airport to your hotel, you can choose from several modes of transportation. Airport buses with frequent departures run from the airport to city center and vice versa in each of the Scandinavian capitals. Trains and taxis may also be available from the airport to the city center. It may then be necessary to take a taxi from the central station to the hotel.

For more information and approximate pricing, please see page 12.

How do I use an Independent Travel Voucher? Why do you use vouchers? If you are traveling independently or have booked an independent pre- or post-tour option, please ensure that you have received your voucher or confirmation before departing the US. A voucher indicates that you have pre-paid for the activity/hotel/services booked; therefore you will not need additional funds to cover these items. To use a hotel voucher, simply present the voucher at the check-in desk of the hotel. To use a train voucher, you will need to present the voucher at the ticketing window in exchange for tickets. For tour/bus vouchers, present the voucher to the driver/guide before departure. Any special instructions are listed on vouchers—please read carefully and check information on voucher for accuracy. Please re-confirm the time of departure locally in the event of schedule changes.

AIRLINE / CUSTOMS INFORMATION

AIRLINE TICKETS / E-TICKETS Domestic Flights: Passenger name must appear on the flight itinerary per your government issued ID.

International Flights: Passenger name must appear on the flight itinerary per your government issued passport.

Please note that airline tickets are processed electronically.

Please advise immediately if the name on your flight reservation does not match your government issued identification/passport. Notification must be made within 24 hours of ticketing. All changes including name, dates or destinations incur a minimum charge of $300, plus additional flight costs.

U.S. citizens are required to carry a valid passport when traveling outside the United States. Neither Brekke Tours nor the air carrier is responsible for costs, expenses, or damages actual or consequential, resulting from the failure of a passenger to obtain a valid passport and/or visa as required by the laws of the country or countries of destination or for the refusal of any government or government authority to admit the passenger to its territory for any reason whatsoever. Failure to present correct documentation may result in denied boarding without refund. Some countries require that a U.S. passport be valid for three to six months after your entry or return from their country. Passengers should check with the appropriate foreign consulate for entry and validity requirements. Passports and Visas are the responsibility of each client. Carefully inspect your itinerary when you receive it to ensure correct travel dates and the correct spelling of your name (first, middle and last) as listed on your identification/passport.

AIRLINE SEATING Seat assignment requests are based on the best available at the time of your reservation. Airlines have the right to change seat assignments at their discretion. Not all itineraries are available for advanced seat assignment, and may be reserved for airport check-in only.

Please note that groups seats are assigned at the discretion of the airline. Brekke Tours cannot guarantee specific seating requests. Seat numbers may not be advised until check-in at the airport or departure gate.

AIRLINE / CUSTOMS INFORMATION

DOMESTIC TICKETS If booking a domestic ticket in connection with your international flight, an overnight (at least for eastbound travel) or an early flight (with at least one backup flight available) is recommended, should the confirmed flight for some reason be cancelled or delayed.

If you have booked a domestic airline ticket separately to connect with an international flight, please note:

Per recent regulations, carriers will not necessarily allow passengers to check bags through to the final destination with multiple tickets. Thus passengers will only be able to check the bag to the destination on the first ticket (s).

Passengers must collect the baggage at baggage claim for their first ticketed destination then re-check their baggage with the down-line carrier for the next flight.

Each ticket is subject to each carrier’s policy concerning baggage restrictions and checked baggage fees.

If you are arriving into Mpls/St.Paul Airport with an international departure on Icelandair, Icelandair is located in Terminal 2. Most domestic flights serve Terminal 1, thus passengers using multiple tickets will need to claim and transport their luggage to Terminal 2. Free transportation is provided via Light Rail Transit between the two terminal buildings. A Special Needs Shuttle is also offered as an alternative for the elderly, people with physical disabilities and families with young children.

DUTY FREE ALLOWANCE TO SCANDINAVIA US and Canadian citizens are permitted to bring the following in checked luggage: Norway and Iceland: 1 liter of alcohol (not exceeding 22% proof), 2

liters of beer, as well as 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of cut tobacco. Sweden, Denmark and Finland: 1 liter of alcohol (not exceeding

22% proof) OR 4 liters of wine OR 16 liters of beer as well as 100 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 250 grams of loose tobacco.

For further information, check regulations for duty free allowances with TSA at www.tsa.gov. Norway’s allowance can be found at www.toll.no. You can also contact the Scandinavian Tourist Board at (212) 885-9700 or [email protected]. As customs regulations are subject to change without notice, it is recommended that you reconfirm these amounts prior to your departure.

AIRLINE / CUSTOMS INFORMATION

FLIGHT CHECK-IN Due to increased security measures at all airports, passengers must check in at least two hours prior to departure for international flights. This will allow you time to check your baggage and present your passport and ticket; get seat assignments and boarding passes if you have not already done so; and pass through security procedures to the boarding area. Generally, your bags will be checked all the way through to your destination. Please verify upon check-in.

Brekke Tours has no control over airline booking procedures and is not responsible for and does not accept liability for denied boarding by any airline due to the carrier's over-booking of a flight. Airline routings are not guaranteed and are subject to change at any time. Brekke Tours is not responsible for any additional expenses incurred as a result of airline cancellations, reschedules, or delays for any reason.

TO CHECK AND VERIFY FLIGHT TIMES/INFORMATION, CONTACT THE AIRLINES DIRECTLY 24 HOURS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE.

Travel Tip: Remember to count all pieces of luggage, including hand luggage, in your and your traveling companions’ possession, and to repeat this check at regular intervals throughout your trip.

FREQUENT FLYER PROGRAMS To ensure mileage credit, present your frequent flyer card upon check-in. Keep the PASSENGER RECEIPT portion of your ticket until you are certain you have received full credit for your frequent flyer miles. If you receive credit for only a portion of your trip, contact your frequent flyer program and give them the number found at the bottom of the ticket. You may need to talk to an agent instead of using phone prompts. For further information, please contact the airline directly or visit their website:

Brekke Tours is not accountable for mileage not being accrued. Traveler is responsible for advising the specific airline(s) of any frequent flyer / awards number at check-in. We recommend you retain all boarding passes as proof of travel.

AIRLINE / CUSTOMS INFORMATION

LUGGAGE Most airlines are now charging for a second piece of checked luggage on international flights. Refer to your carrier’s website for detailed current information. Icelandair allows travelers on international flights from the US to check 1 piece of luggage free of charge and a second piece for $95 each way. SAS allows international travelers from the US to check 1 piece of luggage free of charge and a second piece for $105 each way. Additional baggage fees may apply on domestic flights within the Europe and the US to gateway cities. Please refer to your carrier’s website for detailed

information.

Size and weight limitations for carry-on and checked baggage on international and inter-European flights vary from airline to airline and are subject to change, so please check with your airline or visit their website before departure. Current restrictions for most international flights are 1 checked piece and 1 carry-on per person, in addition to a purse or briefcase. The overall dimension and weight of each checked piece may not exceed 62 in. (l+w+h) and 50 lbs, while the overall dimension and weight of the carry-on may not exceed 45 in. and 13 lbs. Current restrictions for most inter-European flights are 1 checked piece and 1 carry-on per person, however, luggage fees may apply. Brekke Tours is not responsible for additional fees imposed by air carriers regarding baggage. No responsibility is accepted for loss of or damage to luggage or any of the traveler’s belongings. Escorted Tour Participants: On the land portion, due to limited motor coach capacity, we allow only 1 suitcase and 1 carry-on per person. Luggage handling at hotels for 1 suitcase is provided. Airport porterage is not included as security regulations within most airports require that travelers handle and be responsible for their own luggage. We supply luggage tags for you to fill out and attach to your luggage/carry-on prior to leaving home. Please also put a label with your name, address and telephone number on the inside of your luggage in case your tag becomes separated from your luggage.

Page 10: 2017 HELPFUL HINTS - Brekke Tours · For Escorted Tour Participants: Airport transfers in Scandinavia are included for passengers arriving/departing on designated flights of Brekke’s

Delayed or Lost Luggage Should your luggage be delayed, please note that it is the responsibility of the airline to ensure that it is delivered to you en route. Claims for reimbursement for the delayed luggage should be addressed to the airline company. To assist in this process, a claim form should be filled out at the appropriate airline desk before leaving the airport; provide the airline carrier with your contact information so that the delayed luggage may be forwarded correctly. If you need assistance later in contacting the airlines for information regarding your luggage, please contact your tour guide. Your tour guide may also be able to assist you when you make the call to the insurance or airline company, but is not responsible for timings or method of luggage retrieval; this is solely in the hands of the airline involved.

Because luggage can be delayed during air transport, we recommend taking a change of clothing in your carry-on luggage or pack some items in your traveling companion’s bag.

Please do not bring anything with you that will create an emotional or financial hardship if lost or stolen. Leave keys, as well as valuable or favorite jewelry, at home. Please note: Make sure that your checked luggage weighs less than 50 lbs and the overall dimension of each piece does not exceed 62 in. Most airport regulations require that travelers handle their own luggage through customs, so test the weight of your checked luggage; you should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.

For instance, no meals are complimentary in economy class on board Icelandair international flights, but food is available for purchase.

PASSPORTS AND VISAS U.S. citizens are required to carry a valid passport when traveling outside the United States. Some countries require that a U.S. passport be valid for three to six months after your entry or return from their country. Passengers should check with the appropriate foreign consulate for entry and validity requirements. Passports and visas are the responsibility of each client. A visa is not required for Scandinavia or Western Europe for stays of less than 3 months. A visa is required for passengers traveling to Russia. When obtaining a passport, call ahead to your local courthouse or post office to complete instructions and necessary documents. For further information visit the following websites:

www.travel.state.gov or www.usps.com/passport Safeguard your Travel Documents: Take at least two copies of all important documents and travel aids, including your passport, tickets, traveler’s checks, birth certificate and credit cards. Keep one with you and store the other in a safe place. Guard your Passport: Do not pack it in your luggage or hand it to an unauthorized person. STOPOVER AIRPORT INFORMATION

COPENHAGEN KASTRUP AIRPORT Copenhagen Airport is the major airport serving Copenhagen, Denmark and the other cities within the Oresund Region. It is located 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of Copenhagen city center, and 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of Malmö city center at the other side of the Oresund Bridge, on the island Amager. The airport lies mainly in the municipality of Tårnby, with a small portion in neighboring Dragør.

Information desks are located in the Arrivals and transit halls in Terminals 2 and 3, and there is a visitor center in Terminal 3. Banks are located in Terminal 2. There are money exchange stations in Terminals 2 and 3, and ATM’s in all terminals. A post office is situated between Terminals 2 and 3. Wireless Internet is available at many points in the terminals and a number of self-service Internet kiosks can be found in the transit areas of Terminals 2 and 3. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés at the airport. Shopping is plentiful, with many duty free shops. A lost and found office is available at the luggage facility in Terminal 2.

SAS Passengers: SAS passengers continuing on to Norway will need to show their passport at Immigration before heading to the gate for the flight to Norway. Depending on your destination, you may need to arrive 30 minutes ahead of departure time to catch a bus to the plane. You will not need to collect your luggage in Copenhagen if it has been checked through to your final destination.

REYKJAVIK KEFLAVIK AIRPORT Keflavík International Airport is the largest airport in Iceland and the country’s main hub for international transportation. It is situated near the town of Keflavík, about 31 miles (50 kilometers) from Reykjavík.

If you need to exchange your money there are two Landsbanki Íslands (The National Banks) located within the airport: landside in front of the arrival hall, and for departing passengers in the departure hall, second floor.

Icelandair Passengers: Passengers arriving on Icelandair and continuing on will need to show their passport at Customs before heading to the gate for the flight to Norway. You will not need to collect your luggage in Reykjavik if it has been checked through to your final destination.

STOPOVER AIRPORT INFORMATION

STOCKHOLM ARLANDA AIRPORT Stockholm Arlanda is Sweden’s largest airport and an important hub for both the Stockholm region and Scandinavia. At the information counters in Terminals 2 and 4, you can buy the same tickets for ground transport as in Arlanda Visitor Center, get answers to airport-related questions and look at brochures and selected tourist information (for more detailed tourist information, go to the Arlanda Visitor Center in Terminal 5).

If you need to exchange your money to Swedish Kroner, there are several ATM’s located in Terminals 2, 4 and 5 as well as Sky City. You will also find two banks in Sky City: Handelsbanken and SEB.

SAS Passengers: SAS passengers continuing on to Norway will need to show their passport at Immigration before heading to the gate for the flight to Norway. You will not need to collect your luggage in Stockholm if it has been checked through to your final destination.

STAYING COMFORTABLE ON AIRPLANES Below are some tips to help prevent discomfort on long flights and jet lag:

To help adjust to new time zones, just after take-off, set your watch to the time zone of your destination; however, remember that if you change your watch before you leave, you may have some confusion if you have a layover in a different time zone—make sure you know how long you have between flights to avoid missing a connection.

If your flight arrives in the morning, try to sleep on board—if you have trouble sleeping, try over-the-counter sleep-aids.

Bring a toothbrush, and anything else which isn't a liquid or a gel, that you need to help freshen up before getting off the plane.

Wear loose fitting clothing. Wear comfortable shoes and try not to take them off as feet occasionally swell during long flights.

When possible, walk up and down the aisle to stretch your limbs and get your blood circulating. Participate in the in-flight exercise video, should your flight provide one. These are designed to help with body circulation and reduce fatigue.

Drink plenty of water on the plane. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and carbonated drinks.

Avoid wearing contact lenses in flight because cabin air tends to dry them out.

If you tend to get airsick, drink a small bottle of ginger ale before boarding and pack a newspaper in your carry-on bag. The ginger ale will help calm your stomach and so will the smell of the newspaper.

CURRENCY

CREDIT CARDS & ATM CARDS Although not as widely accepted for ship and rail travel, major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express) are honored at most hotels, stores, banks and restaurants. Please note that some kiosks and retailers in Europe are transitioning to a Chip and PIN system instead of the magnetic strip technology. We recommend that you contact your credit card company or bank in advance of departing to determine if this option is available to you. Please note that most credit card companies charge a foreign transaction fee on purchases made abroad. When contacting your credit card company or bank, notify them of your travel dates so that they will anticipate charges being made outside of your hometown and do not suspend your cards for what may appear to them to be “suspicious” charges. We also recommend making a photocopy of the front and back sides of your cards to leave behind with someone at home who can assist you in the event your cards are misplaced, lost, or stolen.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE ATMs There are more than 800 ATMs in Norway. ATMs in Europe only

accept 4-digit numerical PINs. Generally ATM cash conversion rates are better than conversion rates assessed by credit card companies. For specific locations of ATM machines, please visit:

www.mastercard.com (Cirrus ATM network) www.visa.com (Plus ATM network)

Exchanging Cash in Scandinavia US Dollars can sometimes be exchanged at hotels in larger cities

and possibly larger department stores, however, the best rate of exchange is obtained at a bank or post office. Banks are open Monday-Friday, and may close as early as 3-4 p.m., depending on location. Banks at airports, rail and ship terminals often have longer hours, particularly at peak travel times. Banks at the airports are located in the baggage claim area in Copenhagen/Stockholm, and in the arrival hall (after Customs) in Oslo. We recommend exchanging money at the airport as ATM’s and banks may not be available in smaller Scandinavian cities / rural areas. We do not recommend taking traveler’s checks as they are not widely accepted.

CURRENCY

EXCHANGE RATES The monetary unit in Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Iceland is one krone (equals 100 ore). In Finland, it is one euro (equals 100 euro cents). The currencies of the five countries are not interchangeable. It is not necessary to purchase foreign currency in the US as you can generally obtain good rates of exchange at banks located in the arrival airport. Exchange rate averages for 2016-2017 as of 05/02/17 are:

Exchange rates fluctuate. For exact rates, consult your local bank, the business section of your local paper or online at www.oanda.com. Please note: If you plan on visiting multiple countries in Scandinavia, currency is NOT interchangeable between countries. Thus, you will need to exchange money to the local currency upon arrival.

HOW MUCH CURRENCY SHOULD I HAVE ON HAND? The most difficult question to answer is "How much money will I need?" Of course, this depends on many factors - the length of your stay, the extent of your travels, and, last but not least, your shopping and sightseeing plans.

We have two suggestions: first, plan your budget well in advance of your departure, and second, take more money than you think you will need rather than less - this way you won't be disappointed if you find a "must-have" item.

Escorted Tour Participants: Most meals and services are included in the cost of your tour, however, you may want to have some local currency to purchase lunch, snacks and personal items. Local currency can also be given as a tip to your tour director, bus driver and local sightseeing tour guides. For more information on tipping, please see page 23.

HOTELS AND MEALS

ELECTRIC CURRENT The electric current in Scandinavia is 220 volt AC in 50-60 cycles. Prongs on the wall outlets differ from those in the US and Canada. Thus to operate small travel appliances, such as irons, hair dryers, or electric shavers, current converters and adapters are required. Most hardware stores and some discount stores and camera stores carry these products. Larger hotels in major cities might also have them available for guests. Please note: A power adapter is the plug only. A power converter is needed for converting power on an electrical appliance (curling iron, flat iron, rollers, etc). Most hotels in Scandinavia will have an iron and hair dryer available. Power adapters can be purchased from the Brekke Store at www.brekketours.com.

FOOD & MEAL SERVICE / REQUEST Scandinavia offers the traveler a rich variety of world-famous foods for almost every taste and budget, from local specialties in cozy restaurants or country inns to French cuisine in elegant hotels or sophisticated restaurants of international standard.

The average cost of Scandinavian meals per person (without wine or liquor) is as follows: Sandwich from $10 and up Lunch or dinner from $20-25 at a cafeteria Dinner from $45 and up at a restaurant or hotel

Most Scandinavian hotels include breakfast in the accommodation price.

On some international flights you will be served a hot dinner and a light snack prior to arrival overseas. Special meal requests will be submitted to the airline as per your instructions.

Escorted Tour Participants: Please reconfirm any special diet requests with your tour director who will try to assist. Additional costs are at the expense of the tour participant.

HOTELS AND MEALS

HOTEL ROOMS Rooms in Scandinavian hotels may have twin beds, a double bed or day beds. Although triple rooms may be requested, please be advised that conditions may be crowded, as Scandinavian hotel rooms tend to be smaller than American standards. Hotel bathrooms may also be smaller. Many times showers are compact, and sometimes determining how to turn on the hot water can be confusing. If that’s the case, some hotels actually post instructions next to the shower.

Please be advised that hotel rooms are normally not available until after 2:00 pm. An additional hotel night may be purchased should you wish to secure immediate occupancy upon your arrival.

Please also be advised that not all hotels in Scandinavia are air-conditioned.

TIPPING, SERVICE CHARGES AND TAXES Tipping is not as widespread a custom in the Scandinavian countries as in the US and Canada. A service charge is automatically included in most Scandinavian hotel bills. At restaurants a service charge is included in the bill, but a small gratuity is expected for evening meals (7-10%). Taxi drivers are not tipped in Iceland or Finland. In Norway, Denmark and Sweden, drivers should be given a few extra kroner, i.e., even out the total kroner amount of the taxi fare. Escorted Tour Participants: Gratuities to the tour director, guide and driver are left to the discretion of the tour members and are therefore not included in the tour cost. If you have been satisfied with their services, we suggest the following amounts as appropriate:

Local city guides: $1-2 per tour

Bus driver: $3-4 per day

Tour director: $4-5 per day

WHAT TO PACK

CLOTHING Medium-weight clothes are recommended as a base. A raincoat with removable lining is a good choice for summer visitors. A coat is necessary in fall, winter and spring. Casual clothes are appropriate for sightseeing and touring, as well as dining in the hotels. Some tour participants choose to bring dress slacks / skirts for dinner, but this is optional. We highly recommend comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing along cobblestoned streets and for touring, especially in the mountains of Norway.

You may also want to pack the following: A swimsuit if you wish to use indoor pools at some hotels Scarves, gloves and cold weather hats may also be needed

depending upon the weather

FILM/MEMORY CARDS Take plenty of film and/or memory card(s) with you and make sure your batteries are fresh and your camera is working well. Film and camera repairs are expensive in Europe. Due to security equipment utilized at US airports, if you have film for your camera, pack it in your carry-on.

GIFTS Gifts for your family and friends in Scandinavia are not expected, but always appreciated, especially if they are extending their hospitality to you in some manner. Ideas for gifts include:

American flag or wind sock Books (cookbooks / stationary) Calendars Jewelry Cap, t-shirts, sweatshirts or other items unique to your city/state College or professional team sport clothing/caps Native American or country western themed items Liquor/liquors For children: Disney clothing, candy, puzzles, football or cartoon

characters

WHAT TO PACK

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS You may want to add the following items to your travel checklist:

Snacks, mints/gum and water bottle Travel alarm clock Tissues Calculator Sewing kit / safety pins Washcloth (not usually provided at hotels) Medications (motion sickness, aspirin, cold medicine, anti-itch cream) Converter/adapter Band-aids / First-aid kit Plastic baggies (freezer size) for wet items Extra eyeglasses, eyeglass repair kit, contact lenses and

prescriptions Sunscreen and sunglasses Maps and travel information Journal – to record your favorite memories at the end of each day Spot remover – Tide stick, Shout wipes, etc. Collapsible umbrella or poncho Inflatable pillow (neck rest) and eye mask Small daypack for sweaters, camera, snacks and water

To purchase maps, adapters and other travel necessities, visit the Brekke Store at WWW.BREKKETOURS.COM.

PACKING TIPS Save space by rolling your items (instead of folding) Pack socks or odd items inside your shoes Put all of your heaviest items near the wheels of your luggage so

when it's standing, it doesn't topple over Bring clothes in neutral colors that you can mix and match, and only

pack shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits Use zip lock bags with clothes packed by outfits—this will keep you

from having to reorganize your suitcase every time you stop Pack old clothing and leave them behind as you move. The extra

space in your suitcase can be used for souvenirs and gifts! If traveling with someone, pack clothing for both people in each

suitcase - in the unlikely event the airline misplaces one of your suitcases, you will have something fresh to wear.

SHOPPING IN SCANDINAVIA

TAX FREE SHOPPING A Value Added Tax (VAT) is included in the purchase price of everything you buy. As a foreign tourist you are entitled to a partial refund (approx. 11-18%) based on a minimum purchase. Please inquire as to the amount and request a VAT receipt which can be exchanged for cash upon departure from Scandinavia. When you make your purchase in a store that displays the “Tax Free for Tourists” symbol, you should receive a VAT receipt that is exchanged for cash when you depart Scandinavia. The Customs office must stamp the VAT receipt and the refund will be paid in the transit hall at any of the airports (after going through passport and security control). Since you may have to show your purchased merchandise to the customs office at the airport to get your VAT receipts stamped, we suggest you either pack your purchase(s) in your carry-on luggage or visit the customs office prior to checking your luggage, so you can pack your purchase(s) in your checked luggage after receiving the stamped receipts.

For more information, contact by email: [email protected] or visit www.global-blue.com.

SHOPPING TIPS Looking for a gift or souvenir? Popular items purchased in Scandinavia include knitwear, glassware, Dala horses, wood and ceramic trolls, cheese slicers, boxes with rosemaling, jewelry, items made from pewter, chocolate, linens, porcelain, Christmas ornaments, flags, and geitost (the sweet brown goat cheese that can be found in just about every Norwegian kitchen). You may also want to look for popular, classical, or folk music CDs; English translations of Scandinavian books; or clothing by Scandinavian designers, such as Moods of Norway.

GENERAL INFORMATION

METRIC SYSTEM Scandinavia uses the metric system of measures:

NORTHERN LIGHTS The Northern Lights ("Aurora Borealis") stem from when large numbers of electrons stream in towards the Earth along its magnetic field and collide with air particles.

The aurora can be viewed best during early evening and at night when it's not overcast. In Norway, the best time of year is September until the middle of April. Tourists' favorite viewing locations are Northern Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Finland. The Northern Lights can be viewed from other locations as well, but Northern Norway and Iceland are famous for prime viewing opportunities.

Page 32: 2017 HELPFUL HINTS - Brekke Tours · For Escorted Tour Participants: Airport transfers in Scandinavia are included for passengers arriving/departing on designated flights of Brekke’s

Get acquainted with local customs and respect them.

Travel in a spirit of humility and with a genuine desire to meet local people.

Remember that you are not only one among many visitors; do not expect

privileges.

Realize that other people may have concepts of time and other patterns,

which are very different - not inferior - only different.

Spend time reflecting on your daily experiences in order to deepen your

understanding. What enriches you may be robbing others.

Cultivate the habits of listening and observing, rather than merely hearing or

seeing.

Rather than knowing all the answers, adopt the habit of asking questions.

Instead of seeing the “beach paradise,” discover the richness of another

culture and way of life.

Be aware of the feelings of the local people to prevent what might be

offensive behavior, particularly when taking photographs.

Be cautious about bargaining; the poorest merchant will often give up his

profit rather than his/her dignity.

Of journeying, the benefits are many: the freshness it bringeth to the

heart, the seeing and hearing of marvelous things, the delight of beholding

new cities, the meeting of unknown friends, the learning of high manners.
