Croatia

Zagreb

Croatia occupies the largest part of the eastern coast of the Adriatic sea which, as a part of the Mediterranean sea, pen-etrates deepest into European soil. Croa-

tia’s shoreline and numerous islands enjoy the majority of the Adriatic coastline.

The narrow Dinara mountain range separates the country’s Mediterranean region from its central European continental part, which spans from the easterly edges of the Alps in the North-West to the shores of the Danube in the East, encom-passing the southern part of the fertile Pannon-ian lowlands.A land whose rich cultural heritage is not dis-covered only from within the walls of numerous museums, galleries and churches, many of which today, as zero category monuments, are included in a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, but much more in that magical place on the Mediter-ranean, where even the shortest stroll becomes a journey down a staircase thousands of years old which takes one through a history that is at the same time turbulent, exciting and glorious.

Whether walking the intricate grid of narrow white stone streets and alleys, or revelling in the teeming life of the port towns of Istria, Kvarner or Dalmatia, or climbing the green serpentines of Central Croatia to the fairy-like fortresses and castles, each step is an ever fresh experience, made special by the fact that on it’s territory as many as four cultural circles meet, intertwine and complement one another - west, east, Central European and the southern spirit of the Mediter-ranean. Croatia is a land of urban culture which numbers more cities than any other part of the Mediterranean.

This wondrous country has plenty to offer with its rich history, monumental herit-age, tradition and humor, uniqueness, resistance, audacity, wisdom and the new

pages of its future. From time immemorial, an area where various worlds, cultures and civiliza-tions have collided and merged, three religions – Catholic, Orthodox and Islam, have had a tre-mendous impact on the cultural development of the area. This country is unique in many ways. It is a mosaic of contrast, where the traces of ma-terial and spiritual, colors and scents as well as optimism and pride are interwoven.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, although small on the map of the world is placed at the meeting point of continental and Mediterranean climate. As part of its identity and way of living it has preserved national costumes, music and songs, especially the famous „sevdalinka“ type, which represent a „reflection of the soul“, a melancholic love song with a long tradition. There is folk creativity, cus-toms, cottage industry, old crafts, especially fili-gree work, which requires the precise hand of the master and the patient weaving of fine gold and silver strings, creating exquisite jewelry and other decorative objects that numerous visitors have taken home with them throughout the world as cherished memories of the spirit of this country and its people.

In this manner, Bosnia and Herzegovina opens itself to all, its reality and imagination, the tradi-tional and the contemporary, its yesterday and to-day, all of which can be felt and seen at every step.

Macedonia is a mountainous land in the heart of the Balkans, sprinkled with beautiful valleys and lakes. It has a rich Hellenic heritage. The capital, Skopje,

has many delights, including Kale Fortress, dat-ing from the 10th century with its views over the capital, and the sixth-century Stone Bridge.

Shop in the Old Bazaar (the largest in the Bal-kans), or revel in one of the many lively bars. Macedonia’s many churches and mosques, con-tain fine examples of art and architecture from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.

The city of the immortal Ohrid is the sublime lake-side point that for many represents the culmina-tion of the Macedonian experience, a kingdom of light and water, a repository of an ancient ruins from Macedonia’s earlier kingdoms. Ohrid’s ma-jor attractions are all located within a    remark-ably concentrated and eminently walkable area, among and above the narrow streets of the Old Town lined with restaurants and cafes perfectly suited for relaxing in the cool summer, spring and autumn evenings. The uniqueness of Lake Ohrid and the city’s his-torical architecture has been attested by UN-ESCO, honoring it with an official designation as one of the few places on the cultural institution’s list „World Inheritance“.

Slovenia is the only country in Europe that combines the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Pannonian Plain and the Karst. The changing landscape is constantly surpris-

ing. You can have one eye on the sea, then look in the other direction and be surrounded by high mountains. Heading up into the forests, you can see the green plains below you. From upland meadows your view stretches into river gorges. This proximity of opposites and contrasts is a hallmark of the country.

This small country is a big attraction. Extending over 20,273 square kilometers and situated in central Europe between Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia, Slovenia has become a tourism mag-net that can easily be reached using all forms of transport.Slovenia has numerous sites of special natural interest, with features of all four main areas: the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Karst and the Pan-nonian Plain. It also has a wealth of diverse ar-chitecture and urban design. You can truly feel at home in Slovenia’s towns.

Slovenia is a land of greenery, which offers great opportunities for activity holidays. Its high-qual-ity accommodation guarantees a comfortable stay. It is perfect for a summer holiday, a winter break or a weekend away.

Serbia

Serbia has connected West with East for centuries – a land in which civilisations, cultures, faiths, climates and landscapes meet and mingle.

It is located in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula, in southeastern Europe. The northern portion be-longs to central Europe, but in terms of geography and climate it is also partly a Mediterranean coun-try. Serbia is landlocked but as a Danube country it is connected to distant seas and oceans. Serbia is a crossroads of Europe and a geopolitically impor-tant territory. The international roads and railway lines, which run through the country’s river valleys, form the shortest link between Western Europe and the Middle East. The cultural and historical heritage of Serbia be-gins with prehistoric archaeological sites and its legacy from classical antiquity. Perhaps its great-est richness, though, are in the many mediaeval Serbian churches and monasteries, some of which are included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

All year round, numerous cultural, entertainment, traditional and sporting events are held in Serbia, demonstrating the creative power and spiritual vi-tality of this country.

Today, Serbia is a modern, democratic European country, on the path to membership of the Europe-an Union, which a diverse range of visitors – from young backpackers to participants in congresses and fairs – visit every day.

Statistically, the most-visited tourist destinations are the cities of Belgrade and Novi Sad, the moun-tains of Kopaonik and Zlatibor and the spa towns of Vrnjačka Banja and Sokobanja.

Montenegro, the pearl of the Medi-terranean, unique in many ways, is situated in the south of the Adriatic. Montenegro is certainly one of the

most interesting spots in the world. Even though it covers only 14,000 km2 and has about 670,000 citizens, its contribution to the cultural heritage of the world is impressive, considering its size....Nowhere else can you find, so much natural wealth, beauty, mild beaches, clear lakes, fast riv-ers, and gorgeous mountains in such a compact area as in Montenegro. In the morning you can wake up along the beautiful Adriatic coast, have lunch on the banks of Skadar Lake, and enjoy an evening walk in the Montenegrin mountains. Montenegro cannot leave you indifferent.

Not only an excellent choice for holidays, Monte-negro has many other remarkable characteristics: history, culture, tradition, good weather condi-tions, clean air, beautiful nature, the blue Adriatic Sea.... Everyone should visit Montenegro. This little country combines features of both the Bal-kans and the Mediterranean, near Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Italy and Albania. Despite its small size, Montenegro offers great diversity and abundant natural beauty. Don’t forget to take your camera to capture the dream-like grandeur of every view in Montenegro. You won’t need to stage your photos; just click and capture the most beautiful photos from your holidays in your album.

Explore the heritage of a country influ-enced by the Greeks, Romans, Italians and Turks. In the heart of the Mediter-ranean, on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas,

Albania is fast becoming one of the world’s most interesting getaways. Still relatively un-spoiled by globalization, tourists will notice an inspiring mixture of civilizations and cultures - making this European country truly unique.     Nestled in between Greece, Macedonia, Ko-sovo, and Montenegro, and across the Adri-atic from Italy, Albania boasts blue and tur-quoise seas, beautiful beaches, snow peaked mountains, rivers, lakes, and forests. As well as stunning nature, Albanians themselves are famous for their hospitality, and tourists are welcomed with heart-warming generosity.   Albanian history and culture is fascinating. Butrint, one of the world’s archeological won-ders - and a UNESCO World Heritage site - in the south of Albania provides a glimpse of Mediterranean civilization from the Bronze Age through the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods - all atop a cliff overlooking Corfu. It’s not to be missed!     Home of both Mother Theresa and the great 15th Century hero Skanderbeg, Albania today offers not only beach and mountain holidays, but also a vibrant city life, a relaxing outdoor cafe culture and you will see that it’s quickly evolving in a myriad of directions.

Day 10: TIRANA - KRUJA - SHODRA - PODGORICA (MONTENEGRO) - BUDVA (240 km)We start the day at the charming little town of Kruja, perched high on the face of a hill. Kruja was the centre of the 15th C. Al-banian resistance under Skanderbeg against Ottoman Turks. We visit the museum named after him. The street leading up to the castle is built in the style of a Turkish bazaar. From here we continue to Shkoder, in Illyrian times known as Scodra one of the oldest cities in Europe and the traditional centre of the Gheg cultural. Shkodra is rich with historical monuments, in-cluding the old Illyrian Rozafa Castle, Mesi Bridge. After cross-ing the border to Montenegro, we drive to the capital, Pod-gorica. We take a scenic drive alongside Lake Skadar to the Montenegrin coast to Budva. Budva is a medieval town and is definitely the most attractive tourist place on the Riviera. The old part of the town is fortified with typical architecture of narrow streets and stone buildings placed around the main cathedral.. Free evening.

Day 11: BUDVA - CETINJE - KOTOR - DUBROVNIK (CROATIA) (260 km)A scenic drive up the mountain gets us to Cetinje, capital of Montenegro during the Njegos era. It doesn’t have a strong fort like many other important capitals from its time as na-ture blessed this place with natural stone protections. We visit the royal palace of King Nikola II, last King of Montene-gro which contains both a beautiful small museum as well as the Monastery of St. Petar. Next we visit the World Her-itage Site of Kotar - a town museum which was inhabited from the times of the Illyrians and the Romans. Our walk through the city takes us back to medieval times, as most of the monuments we observe are from the 14th to 18th C’s. We vist the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, St. Luka Church, St. Mihail Church, amongst other sites. Late afternoon we con-tinue on a spectacular drive to Dubrovnik. This drive will be witnessing beautiful Boka Kotorska Bay and many old fish-ing villages, churches, monasteries, marinas and beaches. We cross the border into Croatia before arriving Dubrovnik. Day 12: DUBROVNIK This morning we start with a walking tour through the old walled heart of Dubrovnik. All motor vehicles are banned from the center and our transport drops us outside the Pile Gate where we visit the Franciscan Monastery, housing one of the world’s oldest pharmacies, the old harbor, St Laurence For-tress, the Sponza and Rector’s Palaces and other points of in-terest in this best preserved European walled city. Afternoon, we are free to enjoy Dubrovnik’s old city or its popular Adriatic Sea beach.

Day 13: DUBROVNIK - TREBINJE - SARAJEVO (BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA) (280 km)After a leisurely day at Dubrovnik coast, we drive inland up the mountains where we cross the border into Bosnia and Herzego-vina. We pass through the picturesque little town of Trebinje fa-mous for its Old Town and by the church Mausoleum of the very famous poet Jovan Ducic. We proceed through the bare moun-tains of the area, then through the National Park of Sutjeska, crossing the river Sutjeska and driving through its Canyon before arriving Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Day 14: SARAJEVO We start the day with a walking tour of Sarajevo. This magical town with all its charms takes us instantly back to the Otto-man day as we visit beautiful Ottoman mosques, old quar-

to tour Lipica Stud Farm. The impact of Lipica has been far greater than its tiny size would suggest. In 1580, the Aus-trian Archduke Charles, son of Ferdinand I, established a stud farm (kobilarna) to breed horses for the Spanish Rid-ing School in Vienna. We later visit Postojna. The cave at this scenic town is one of the largest in the world, and is among Slovenia’s most popular attractions. The Postojna Cave (Pos-tojnska Jama) system, a series of caverns, halls and pas-sages some 27 km (17 miles) long and 2,000,000 years old, was hollowed out by the Pivka River, which enters a sub-terranean tunnel near the caves’ entrance. The river con-tinues its deep passage underground, carving out several more series of caves, and emerges again as the Unica River.

Day 21: LJUBLJANA - BLED (60 km)We start the day with a tour of “Bela Ljubjana.” This was the nickname given to this delightful city after it was entirely re-built in the 16th century following the massive earthquake of 1511. We visit the old town with its large university, philhar-monic hall, and beautiful square of the three bridges. Across the bridge in the old town we will see the city cathedral. Per-haps the most interesting parts of the building are the brand new bronze doors. Commemorating centuries of struggle towards independence, these doors recount major events in the history of Slovenia. Our walking tour is not complete without time spent wandering through the open air and in-door city market. Our next visit is Lake Bled. Reflecting the high peaks of the Julian Alps, the lake has always been con-sidered sacred to the locals. We start with a visit of the cas-tle perched on a cliff overlooking the town. Offering stunning views over the still morning waters, the castle is also home to a small historical museum with artifacts dating back to the time of the Romans. At the shores of Lake Bled we em-bark on a boat ride to Slovenia’s only island. Legend has it that this little island was originally inhabited by fairies. To-day the island is home to a Baroque church dedicated to Our Lady of the Lake. Near the altar of the church hangs a rope attached to the bells in the tower. Legend has it that if you make a wish while ringing the bells the wish will come true. Day 22: BLED DEPARTURECompleting the historical trail of the Balkans with return transfer to Ljubljana airport

ters and the authentic Turkish “carsija”, with its oriental sweets shops, cafes and traditional Bosnian food. Sarajevo is also a town in which for more then 400 years mosques, orthodox churches, roman-catholic churches and synagogues have been standing to-gether. Day 15: SARAJEVO – MOSTAR (135 km) No visit of Bosnia & Herzegovina is complete without a visit to Mostar. We start the day with a breathtaking drive along River Neretva and through the Bosnian Mountains before ar-riving Mostar. Afternoon, we tour Mostar, a picturesque town, more then 5 centuries old and made famous by the Old bridge. The construction of the bridge began in 1557 and continued for nine years making it the masterpiece of Hajrudin, and un-der the close observation of the Caliph, Suleyman The Mag-nificent (builder). We stroll through the narrow medieval style old bazaar with astounding Ottoman Islamic architecture.

Day 16: MOSTAR - MEDJUGORJE - SPLIT (CROATIA) (155 km)After a short drive through the bare mountains of the area, we reach

the pilgrimage site of Medjugorje. It is a small village and a target of many pilgrims from all around the world in the last 24 years. In 1981, several of the local children received the messages of Virgin Mary, and since then, this has been a place of “miracles” which draw many believers. We tour the big local church and the area where the miracle is reputed to have taken place. A picturesque drive through the mount of Biokovo will take us down to the Dalmatian Coast where we make a brief stop at the town of Makarska mak-ing our for our final destination of the day to the old town of Split. Day 17: SPLIT Split is a vibrant city of shouting stall owners, in-transit travelers, and white-suited sailors who give it a noisy, night-on-the-town feel. At the heart of all of this, hemmed in by sprawling estates and a modern harbor, lies Diocletians’ Palace, a crumbling old town, and some of the most outstanding classical architecture in the world which we will enjoy visiting today. Surrounded by dense woods, the region, UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site is a natural phenomenon of rare and unique beauty. Wooded paths follow the succession of lakes and waterfalls where streams burst out of rocks creating a unique place. The colors of the pools are reminiscent of Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. Upon arrival to Zagreb in afternoon, we visit the Zagreb Cathedral followed by the lively atmosphere of Dolac Market. Our walk will also take us to St. Mark’s Church and the Lotrscak Tower, from where noon time is announced by cannon firing. We culminate the day with a tour of Maksimir, the oldest public cultivated park in Europe.
