Defusing Angry & Abusive PeopleAVAILABLE AS AN IN-HOUSE COURSE

There seems to be increasingly more anger and violence in our society and workplaces. We all encounter angry people and whilst we cannot always defuse the anger, then at least we should know how not to inadvertently escalate it into violence.

This course will show you how to read the signs of anger and recognise the potential for violence. You will learn techniques to handle your own reactions in stressful situations and how to best communicate with people at different stages of the anger cycle.

You will use scenarios and video examples, and you will have the opportunity to discuss your own personal experiences in a confidential setting. Our facilitator is a highly experienced former police and hostage negotiator, who has extensive practical experience of what actually works when faced with angry and abusive people.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES:

• Explore anger & emotion and identify the different stages of anger• Threat assessments – learning the warning signs• Learn techniques to help you to stay calm and in control• Understand your personal triggers and reactions• Learn how to talk a person down from anger• Set limits on how a person can express their anger• Deal with bullying & intimidation• Mental illness & drug/alcohol• Know how to avoid escalating the violence• Protect yourself from violence• Debriefing and coping with the aftermath

This unique training opportunity is relevant for anyone who works with the public, who has tried to calm down an agitated person, and those who want to know how to handle abusive and threatening behaviour. In particular, it will be highly relevant for the following:

• Teachers• Healthcare professionals• Government departments• Social services workers• Call centre staff• Customer service• Property managers• Parking wardens • Airline employees

• Customs• Correctional staff• Receptionists• Hospitality staff• Bank & Insurance• Public transport operators• Referees
