Welcome Welcome to the Cirencester Sixth Form College 2016 Prospectus, in this our 25th Anniversary year.With the new A-level curriculum changes, it is more important than ever that we guide you through your decision-making and answer as many of your questions as possible. We offer a great range of exciting courses from Level 1 traineeship courses to university level provision, including opportunities in professional apprenticeships.

By listening to what the students want, we are investing heavily to provide new student

study and social areas, which of course all have free Wi-Fi access and café style facilities.

As Chair of the Corporation, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all prospective parents and guardians to Cirencester Sixth Form College and to emphasise the importance that we place on the partnership between you, our students and our staff.

Having been a parent, helping my sons make their study choices at Cirencester College, I appreciate the difficulties faced by students and parents in moving on to this stage of education. The College actively involves

parents, ensuring parents have a recognised voice within the College. Through the ‘Parent Portal’ you gain direct access to valuable information to help keep track of each student’s progress.

We hope that we can continually improve this vital three-way partnership between families, staff and students.

Parent Zone is the dedicated part of the website where parents will find the latest information together with news updates and the opportunity to sign up for mailing lists. Parents also get an opportuity to feedback to let us know how we’re doing. Parent Zone is evolving all the time and we hope to continue to develop it as a one-stop-shop for the information parents need to support students with their work and revision.

I was honoured to take on the role of Parent Governor at Cirencester College. I have been particularly impressed with the wide range of opportunities available to students, the inspiring teaching staff and vibrant learning environment.

Hopefully, you will have received a taster of what is on offer from the college open days and like me, have been inspired by the achievements of current and past students.

As a parent governor, I aim to work with the Senior Leadership Team and fellow governors to ensure that the college continues to thrive and that parents’ expectations are met.

What is a Sixth Form College?There are 93 Sixth Form Colleges in England which offer an extensive range of courses and pastoral care specially tailored for the 16-18 age group.

Sixth Form Colleges are experts in 16-18 education and act as a valuable stepping stone between the worlds of compulsory education, and higher education and employment. A Sixth Form College timetable can accommodate virtually all combinations of student choices and the curriculum offer is reviewed on a regular basis.

Most Sixth Form Colleges specialise in providing A Levels but many also offer a limited range of Level 3 vocational qualifications. If you look at national A Level league tables for non-selective schools and colleges you will see just how successful Sixth Form Colleges are.

To be a Sixth Form College is to be part of an elite, but not elitist group. On a range of measures Sixth Form Colleges outperform all other types of 16-18 provider.

A 2011 report by the National AUDIT office concluded that of all educational providers, Sixth Form Colleges “perform best on most measures of learner achievement”.

Value Added. What does it mean and why should it matter to you?‘Value added’ might sound like management speak but it tells you more about how good an education provider is than almost any other indicator. Quite simply it tells you how big a difference a school or college makes. There are several models but essentially they all compare the GCSE score a student has at 16 with the A Level or BTEC score they leave with at 18. We use a system call ALPS which is used by top performing schools and colleges across the country.

Amongst all types of 16-19 schools and colleges in England, Sixth Form Colleges have the best value added and make the most difference for students. Cirencester College is in the top 10 Sixth Form Colleges nationally in terms of value added.

What this means for you is that you have a better chance of getting higher A-level grades than your GCSEs would suggest if you study with us rather than almost anywhere else. This is regardless of whether you come in with 5 grade Cs or 10 A*s.

We are able to do this year-in-year-out because we are a specialist A-Level and BTEC College. That is what our staff are expert in and concentrate on. We provide tremendous subject choice , a supportive and ambitious pastoral system and great teaching. However, you will also need to work hard…

As a result of the increased demand from students outside our immediate area for transport to Cirencester College, we now run 25 subsidised coach routes to the College. In addition, there are also public bus routes from surrounding areas.

Our dedicated coaches pick up from various areas in Swindon, Cheltenham, Stroud and surrounding villages including those below. Routes may be subject to change each year. In 2015 the College has introduced a bus coming in from Quedgeley.

What subjects should I choose?

1 Make sure you choose subjects that you enjoy and that you are good at. If you have an idea about a future career or university, think about the subjects that you might need to study. Then find out as much information as possible about the courses as soon as you can. This Prospectus gives you a brief description of all our courses, but for more details we recommend that you look at our online course information on our website www.cirencester.ac.uk

Study Programmes: Students will be expected to be studying full-time (between 540 and 600 guided learning hours per annum). This may include Maths and

English, work experience, enrichment, your courses, tutorial support and for A-level students either General Studies or Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

Choosing the type of learning that suits youWhether you prefer exams or coursework, practical or theory based learning, or are interested in apprenticeships, we are committed to ensuring that you are on the right course when you start here. So before you are offered a place at Cirencester Sixth Form College, you will receive a 30-minute interview with a member of our trained admissions team to help you make the right decisions. It is important to know about and understand all your options, please see the pathways [on page 14] and the course entry requirements.

Think about course packagesA feature of our broad curriculum and specialist tutor system is that we are able to tailor programmes to suit your ambitions. We call these ‘packages’ and include particular mixes of courses and enrichment. More details will appear on our website from Autumn 2015 but here are two examples:

Teaching: A combination of 3 A Levels including the appropriate national curriculum subject, Pre-Teaching Programme, Tutor group, Schools placement

Veterinary Science: 3 or 4 A Levels including Sciences, Vets and Medics tutor group, Placement, Animal Management 30 Credit Certificate

If you are thinking of a particular career take a look at the National Careers Service website nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk which will give you examples of many careers and the qualifications you will require. Also take the opportunity to discuss your thoughts at your admissions interview.

Choosing the right pathway

Academic Pathways AS and A-level will suit your learning style if you enjoy and perform well in exams and you want to study a range of subjects. They will suit you if you: • prefer exams to coursework

• like learning about theories, ideas and facts

• want to study 4 or 5 subjects in depth

• are good at revising

• want to keep your options open for employment or higher level apprenticeships

Vocational Pathways A vocational course will give you the career specific skills and qualifications that enable you to have the choice of university or going straight in to your chosen career. They are a great choice if you: • prefer coursework to exams • want to study topics that will directly relate to a specific career you

have in mind

• want to keep the option of going to university open • want the opportunity of work experience that will help to start your career

Apprenticeships As an apprentice, you can work for a local company for four days a week, attend College for one day a week and earn while you learn. They are a good choice if you:

• are ready to start the career you are interested in now• want the experience of studying whilst working • want to gain career specific qualifications• want to start earning money

Cirencester Sixth Form College’s A-level provision offers a fantastic range of subjects, giving students the opportunity to broaden their choices at university or in employment.

A-levels explainedFrom September 2016 most of our A-level subjects will become Linear A-levels, in line with Department of Education reforms. All subjects will be linear by 2017.

The new Linear A-levels will only be assessed by examinations at the end of the two-year course. Students will no longer take an AS-level after the first year as they currently do with the old modular A-levels .

In some of the new linear subjects there will be an opportunity to take a stand-alone AS-level (SA) rather than a full A Level. However. students who choose to do this may not be able to change their minds later and go on to do a full A Level in that subject. This is because the skills and types of assessments in some subjects differ between AS and A-level.

Accounting AS-level

A2-level

A working knowledge of accounting is crucial to the successful running of any business. A dynamic and interesting subject, accounting enables you to interpret numerical data, produce financial reports and make business decisions.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: C in Maths.

Anthropology AS-level

A2-level

Anthropology is the study of humans. Through a range of modules, you will explore the evolution of the human body and how it relates to the way that people live today. Students also investigate the diversity of human cultures and societies across the world, and discover the many ways in which we are all united in being human. This is a varied, multidisciplinary subject which bridges the gap between science and humanities. Pairs especially well with Archaeology, Biology, History and Psychology.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Archaeology AS-level

A2-level

Archaeology is the study of past human lives by looking at physical remains. You will

investigate prehistoric religion and ritual using evidence including tombs, stone circles and

bog bodies. You will also learn about the methods used by archaeologists to examine sites

and have a go at fieldwork for yourself. Fantastic trips across Britain and Europe are an

intrinsic part of this course, which complements science, arts and humanities subjects.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Biology AS-level

A-level

Biology will introduce you to the fundamentals of all biological systems. This will include cell structure, transport systems, biochemistry, enzymes and the role of DNA. Aspects of human health including diet, disease and immunity are explored, as well as the diversity of life and evolution.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: B in Biology or B in both Core and Additional Science.

Business Studies AS-level

A-level

Business Studies introduces you to the world of business decision making, from the inception, planning and launch of a new enterprise to the unique challenges of running a multi-national, global public listed company. Topics include finance, marketing and human resources.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Chemistry AS-level

A-level

Using the knowledge you have gained in GCSE Chemistry (as a single, double or triple Science), this course will develop your understanding of the fundamental concepts further and apply them to unfamiliar situations. With an emphasis on independent learning and problem solving, you will apply your knowledge through laboratory-based investigation and analysis.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: B in Chemistry OR B in both Core AND Additional Science.

Grade B in Maths.

Classical Civilisations AS-level

A2-level

Classical Civilisations gives you the opportunity to study a lively mixture of history and literature centred on Ancient Greece and Rome. Linking political, social and military history, philosophy, sociology and the arts, this course will appeal to those with an interest in a past that shapes our present in so many ways.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Computing AS-level

A-level

If you wish to understand the concepts of computing, how computers work, and how to create software for others to use, A Level Computing is for you. Through theoretical analysis and hands-on practical work, you will learn the core principles of computing and how to apply them.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: Grade B in GCSE Maths.

Design - 3D Design AS-level

A-level

This is a creative course that allows you to design and make products and artefacts. 3D Design requires high levels of visual awareness, including drawing skills and the ability to work skilfully with tools and materials. You will create functional and decorative designs in response to given briefs or project starting points.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: Grade C or a MERIT or DISTINCTION at BTEC Level 2

in an Art or Design subject. Entry may also be made

via portfolio/interview.

Drama & Theatre Studies AS-level

A-level

Develop your acting and directing skills to work in different theatre styles. Explore how to make a classical text come to life. Watch live theatre and learn how it speaks to its audience. Improve your self-confidence and ability to work together with others as you rehearse and perform a play. Express your ideas through essays that communicate your experiences.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Economics AS-level

A-level

If you want to know what society does about high prices, globally powerful firms, a limited choice of goods, underdeveloped countries and poverty, this is the course for you. You will examine questions such as “Why do pop stars get paid more than nurses?” and “Why should the government pay young people to study?”

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Electronics AS-level

A2-level

The study of Electronics will enable you to gain an understanding of the electronic circuit. You will develop the skills needed to design and build your own circuits; this course is an excellent complement to Sciences, Engineering and Computing.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: C in both Core and Additional Science. C in Maths.

English Language A-level

This course will develop your analytical skills by exploring how language is used in both writing and speech. You will learn grammatical terminology which will allow you to approach texts with impressive precision. You will also write a great deal, from play scripts to newspaper reports, and learn to analyse your own writing.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: English Language at C grade.

English Literature A-level

This course introduces you to a detailed analysis of a range of literature. You will read a broad variety of books and plays, and discuss your interpretations in class. You will also develop your essay writing skills, incorporating your own critical ideas whilst showing an awareness of other critics’ interpretations.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: English Language at C grade.

English Language & Literature

AS-level

A-level

This course develops your analytical skills in reading literary and non-literary texts as well as improving your writing. The course will suit you if you enjoy analysing language in detail and want to use precise terminology in studying literature.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Environmental Studies AS-level

A2-level

This course is for anyone interested in getting beyond the headlines about environmental issues and discovering the science behind the stories. You will look at how our environment works and how we manage and conserve our vital resources. Themes include wildlife conservation, pollution issues, global warming and the future use of energy.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects..

Film Studies AS-level

A2-level

This course will develop your analytical skills and teach you about the unique features of the film industry. You will watch and analyse a wide range of films, discuss and present ideas, write essays and evaluations and research current issues around the film industry. You will also have the opportunity to do some practical and creative work.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Fine Art AS-level A-level

This course will stimulate you to explore the work of a range of artists and generate your own ideas through practical and written work. You will be introduced to a broad variety of materials and techniques, and encouraged to experiment with them to develop ideas and produce final pieces.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: Grade C or a MERIT or DISTINCTION at BTEC Level 2

in an Art or Design subject. Entry may also be made

via portfolio/interview.

French A-level

A language A-level opens many doors. You will gain the confidence to speak and write freely on a variety of topical issues, to understand the ins and outs of the target language (TL) grammar in addition to acquiring transferable research and analytical skills. The course content focuses on developing in-depth knowledge of the target language culture and will include the study of both a film and a novel. You will improve your ability to problem solve, to be creative and above all to communicate well.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: French B grade. If you don’t have a GCSE in French you can

join the GCSE course in your first year before studying for

the full A-level in year two.

Geography AS-level

A-level

The study of the world: you will examine key topics of physical and human geography, including rivers, floods and management, coastal environments, population change and health issues. In the second year, you will study plate tectonics, ecosystems and world cities. This exciting course includes a number of fieldwork trips and teaches a range of investigative skills.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Geology AS-level

A2-level

Geology involves the study of the processes that operate on or below the Earth’s surface and covers a wide range of topics: earthquake devastation and the tsunamis it can cause, oil spills and shortages, fracking and dinosaur evolution…If you are interested in why these events take place and the impact they have on us, Geology has the answers.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

German A-level

A language A-level opens many doors. You will gain the confidence to speak and write freely on a variety of topical issues, to understand the ins and outs of the target language (TL) grammar in addition to acquiring transferable research and analytical skills. The course content focuses on developing in-depth knowledge of the target language culture and will include the study of both a film and a novel. You will improve your ability to problem solve, to be creative and above all to communicate well.

Government & Politics AS-level

This course is for those interested in current affairs, ideas, and how the country is run. Government and Politics explores the British political system, and looks at how countries work with one another to gain influence and shape the world we live in.

Graphic Communication AS-level

A-level

Graphic Communication is concerned with conveying messages using images and text. You will work to themes or briefs to generate designs including illustrations for books or magazines, film or television posters, DVD or CD covers. You will explore typography and its relationship to images and develop an understanding of how graphic design can sell a product or service.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: Grade C or a MERIT or DISTINCTION at BTEC Level 2 in an Art or Design subject. Entry may also be made via portfolio/interview.

History AS-level

A-level

Study the significance of key events, individuals, issues and societies throughout history in a stimulating and interactive environment. You will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of topics including Dark Age Britain, Medieval and Tudor England, The British Empire and 20th century Europe and America. This is a two year course assessed through examinations and coursework in the second year. In the one year AS-level course you will have the opportunity to study conflict in America 1945-76 and the British Empire 1857-1890. The course is assessed through examinations.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: If students have taken GCSE History, they have to have

achieved a Grade C or above to take AS-level or

A-level History

Law AS-level

A2-level

This course is for anyone interested in learning about the operation of the English legal system and the basics of criminal law and negligence. When exploring Criminal Law, we will look at offences against the person with real case law including fighting on the streets and malicious wounding. The study of Law is for everyone, not just lawyers. You will engage in a range of debates, take part in a mock trial and learn a range of skills needed for higher education and employment.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Mathematics AS-level

A2-level

This course gives you an insight into some of the diverse topics that can be studied in Mathematics. While it is a subject that is interesting to study in its own right, it is also a useful aid to other courses with mathematical or statistical content such as the Sciences, Business Studies, Economics and Psychology.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Mathematics (Further) AS-level

This course is only AS-level Further Mathematics, not the full A Level. It is for anyone who has already studied AS Mathematics. You must have completed either Statistics1, Mechanics1 or Decision1 alongside Core1 and Core2. This course is usually taken by second year students. The related course for first year students is listed under ‘Mathematics & Further Mathematics’.

Entry requirement: Grade C in AS level Mathematics, with at least a B grade in both C1 and C2.

Mathematics (Use of) AS-level

A2-level

This subject has been designed to give students valuable skills to support their studies in other subjects. It is an ideal choice for students who want to pursue a practical and relevant maths course, and is particularly useful for subjects such as Psychology, Biology, Business Studies and Geography. It includes elements of Algebra, Data Analysis and Decision Maths.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Course specific entry requirement: Maths GCSE grade B and grade C or above in English.

Mathematics & Further Mathematics

This is a combination course which takes up two of your A Level options. In the first year students study Mathematics AS Level and Further Mathematics AS Level. In the second year students complete Mathematics A Level and Further Mathematics A Level. Six modules are studied in each year and include a mixture of Pure Maths, Statistics, Mechanics and Decision Maths units. If you are hoping to study Mathematics, Physics or Engineering at a prestigious university, you would be advised to study this course.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Media Studies AS-level

A2-level

Film, television, radio, the press, advertising and the internet are the media through which ideas, attitudes and information are communicated. Media Studies explores how these channels work and aims to help you understand, criticise and enjoy media products by combining theoretical study with practical projects.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Music AS-level

A-level

Study the music of the great composers, jazz icons and pop stars; compose and perform your own music; develop your harmony and rhythmic skills and perform in whatever style you choose.

Philosophy, Ethics & Religion

AS-level

A-level

Western philosophy includes discussions on the arguments for and against the existence of God, the nature of the mind and how it differs from the body and what implications this has for a possible life after death. In Ethics you will compare and contrast different theories on ‘how to be good’ applied to ethical dilemmas such as legalising euthanasia. You will question whether you are truly free and what role the conscience plays in moral behaviour.

Explore Buddhism which is considered by many to be an eastern philosophy rather than a religion. You will look at teachings on the nature of reality and human life, wisdom, morality and meditation.

Entry requirement: At least 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including 5 from the core subjects.

Photography AS-level

A-level

This exciting hands-on course offers you the knowledge and skills to become highly inventive in the creation of eye catching, thought provoking imagery. The course follows both traditional and digital techniques where much emphasis is based upon the research and study of both historical and contemporary photographers.

Physics AS-level

A-level

Through this course, you will gain experience of what real physicists do. You will consider the weird and wonderful quantum nature of light and matter, learn about electromagnetism, delve into the depths of particle accelerators and explore the natural rhythms of orbital systems in the clockwork universe.

Psychology involves delving into the forces that drive and determine human behaviour. You will study some of the most important and interesting research from around the world as well as having the opportunity to study mental health disorders, forensic psychology and one other elective module, either sport, child or environmental Psychology in your second year. Studying Psychology enables you to learn the skills that are required to design and carry out research projects, and to apply your psychological knowledge to real life situations and events.

This course will appeal to those interested in human behaviour and the critical study of society. Level 3 Vocational

Cirencester Sixth Form College’s has an excellent reputation for vocational study.

Vocational courses are designed to provide routes into employment as well as allowing progression to university.

Courses include more practical learning and skills development than A-levels but also have a theoretical background. They can be taken alongside, or in place of GCSEs and A-levels.

Level 3 vocational qualifications are mostly assessed through coursework. You build a portfolio of projects and assignments, throughout the courses. Each programme is made up of units, the number of which depends on the level and size of the course. Qualifications are graded either as a Pass (A-level grade E), a Merit (A-level grade C), a Distinction (A-level grade A) or a Distinction star (A-level grade A*).

Level 3 vocational qualifications can be taken by themselves or with GCSEs or A-levels.

This course focuses on the practical applications of science and develops an understanding of how science is used in the world. Students also develop important study and research skills and the ability to analyse and evaluate sources and experimental data. Childcare & Education Level 3

Cache Diploma

Ideal for those who want to work in a childcare setting such as a nursery, early-years centre, playgroup or crèche, this two-year, full time course consists of three days in the classroom and two days on mandatory work placement. This means you will gain the knowledge and skills required to become a successful childcare practitioner, putting class theory into practice in an interesting and supportive environment. The programme also supports learners hoping to pursue a career in primary education.

Throughout the course you will gain essential knowledge about children’s growth, development, care, education and how best to work with parents and professionals alike.

Level 3

This course is aimed at those who wish to work outdoors or in any of the countryside, heritage or environmental industries. The course uses a mix of practical and classroom activity, which will provide valuable preparation for work or pave the way to Higher Education. Progression is also available via our Foundation Degree routes [see page 119].

Dance Level 3

Subsidiary Diploma

Certificate

Explore the world of dance, through the genres of jazz, contemporary dance and ballet. This course has a mainly practical approach, leading to improving your dance skills, whilst learning to choreograph and use the vast world of dance styles currently available. You will be continually assessed throughout the course, and as you progress to the second year, you will get the chance to take part in creating your own work in your final major performing project. Students should have experience of dance in at least one genre.

Engineering Level 3

Extended Diploma Diploma Subsidiary Diploma

In two years, ‘single engineering’ leads to a Subsidiary Diploma (=1A level), and ‘double engineering’ leads to a Full Diploma (= 2 A-levels) and ‘triple engineering’ leads to an Extended Diploma (=3 A-levels).

The course provides a general engineering education through a mixture of electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering units, and units that are relevant to all engineering disciplines, such as health and safety, maths and communications.

The CAD and CAM units apply modern technologies to engineering problems, and you will complete an engineering project. In addition, you will do practical work in the College workshop. This course is aimed at singers, guitarists, drummers and bass players and focuses on pop, rock and Jazz music performance and the music industry. The course will suit those of you that have several years experience on a chosen instrument and have an interest in performing a range of musical styles with the aim of improving both your practical ability and your general knowledge of music. The course will involve performance as part of a live band and as a soloist and the study of music theory, ear training, rhythm studies and sight reading.

Course specific entry requirement: A good level of musicianship. We assess your musical

Develop your music technology and production skills using Logic Pro, work on projects based on realistic workplace situations, learn to sequence, record, produce and compose with technology. A practical performance course in which you gain skills and understanding through productions. Working in the College’s professional theatre, The Sundial, this is your chance to develop your skills in acting, dancing and singing and then try them out in front of an audience. Biology Level 2

IGCSE

With an emphasis on human biology, the IGCSE Biology syllabus helps learners to understand the technological world in which they live, and take an informed interest in science and scientific developments. Learners gain an understanding of the basic principles of biology through a mix of theoretical and practical studies. This course is ideal for students who wish to pursue a career which involves biology and who do not already have a grade C or better in a GCSE science subject. It is also good for those wishing to teach.

English Language Level 2

IGCSE

The new IGCSE course in English Language will involve both writing and reading. You will have to write both stories, descriptive pieces, letters and newspaper articles. In addition, you will read a novel and some short stories. The aim of the course is to help you to improve your ability to express yourself accurately both on paper and orally as well as to understand a variety of other texts. The new grading system runs from 9 to 1 (with 9 the top) and we will be aiming to get everyone to at least a grade 5. The Speaking and Listening element is marked separately.

French Level 2

This is an intensive language course for students with no previous experience of French. You will have the option of studying for a full A-level in your second year.

Functional Skills English

Level 2

Level 1

This course seeks to improve your use of language, both in writing and in speaking. There are two exams which can be taken at Level 1 (pre-GCSE) or Level 2 (the equivalent of a grade C at GCSE), both of which test your ability to understand something that you have read and to write clearly in a practical context, such as writing a letter or a report. In addition, you will be assessed on how well you speak in a variety of contexts. Exams can be taken at several points during the year, enabling the teacher to tailor the pacing of the course to suit each individual.

Functional Skills Maths Level 2

Level 1

Unlike GCSE Maths, all Functional Skills Maths questions are set in a context, such as a carpenter’s workshop, a supermarket or a travel agents. Functional Maths is all about using your numeracy skills to solve real life problems. It is these skills which employers want their employees to have.

Level 2 Functional Skills is roughly equivalent to half a grade B at GCSE.

Event Planning Level 2

Award

This qualification is suitable for learners interested in planning events. It provides an overview of the skills required for successful event planning, organisation and evaluation. This is a short course aimed at Level 3 students. This course can be taken alongside Level 3 Courses.

Resort Representative Level 2

Award

The Level 2 Award for Resort Representatives provides the skills, knowledge and understanding required to carry out the role of Resort Representative. It is ideal for those seeking employment in the industry without formal qualifications. The qualification has been endorsed by Thomas Cook. Thomas Cook has indicated that the qualification meets their needs for well-trained staff and have further indicated the value of the qualification to the sector by guaranteeing an interview for those students who successfully complete the qualification and meet their minimum criteria. This is a short course aimed at Level 3 students. This course can be taken alongside Level 3 courses.

Music Technology & Performing ArtsWe do not currently run these courses at Level 2. However students who are talented in these areas may be accepted on to Level 3 certificates or diplomas, following interviews with course leaders, even if they don’t have GCSEs in Maths and English.

Level 1 Works for MeThe ‘Works for Me’ study programme is perfect for anyone aged 16-18 years old who hopes to progress into work but needs some support and guidance to do so. The course will develop skills you need for work.

You will be given the opportunity to undertake voluntary work and a work experience placement so that you can gain work experience whilst boosting your confidence and CV.

The course is broken up into different elements:• Researching Employment Opportunities• Operating in a Work Environment• Interview Skills• Building and Managing Workplace Behaviours• Recognising Leadership Skills• Presentation Skills• Dipping into a level 2 unit in an area of your choice

English and Maths are essential in order to gain employment and successfully progress within the world of work. You will therefore improve and develop your English and Maths. Suitable candidates will have the opportunity to gain a Level 1 and/or Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in English and/or Maths.

Entry RequirementsMinimum full Level 1 in any subject area. We welcome applicants without prior experience but you must be motivated to work and be capable of coping with a work placement within 3 to 4 months.

ProgressionOn successful completion of the ‘Works for Me’ programme, students can either move into employment or progress onto the Traineeship programme where a work placement will be secured in an area of your choice. This programme will run for up to six months where upon completion we hope you will progress into employment or an apprenticeship.

Land Based & Animal Studies

Level 1

One year

We offer two pathways:

1) Large animals and countryside/conservation

2) Small animals and countryside/conservation

Our local area gives young people a huge choice of land-based careers. These Level 1 courses can help you gain the skills and experience needed to set you on the path for a great job or, if you prefer to carry on with your studies, you can progress to our excellent Level 2 courses.

Both pathways are very practical and you will get to work with the animals at our local yard or on site here in college as well as on land-based projects in a variety of different settings. You will build up a wide range of skills in a friendly, supportive and interesting environment, with experienced staff and dedicated support technicians to give individual help both in class and outdoors. The course also includes work experience to back up your studies.

We will help you with your Functional Skills in Maths and English, give you the chance to work on wider employability and personal skills and ensure you have the right support for your individual needs. Trips and visits are also included and can be a fun way to get the most out of your studies.

Functional skills in English, Maths and ICT are also an integral part of the course.

Entry requirement: Mainly Grade Es to Gs at GCSE.

In September 2015 thanks to a Sport England initiative Cirencester Sixth Form College was able to employ a resident Sports Engagement Project Officer who will be working with the College to encourage more students in the college community to get active. Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport have set out ambitious aims to engage ALL students in some form of physical activity on a regular basis and not just main stream sports so our Sports Engagement Project Officer would like to hear from you if you have ideas on what sport/physical activity you would like to participate in or are interested in.

Inspired by the London Olympic Games legacy, in 2013 we launched our very successful Sports Development Squads to build on the success of our sports clubs in Netball, Rugby, Basketball, Hockey and Badminton in addition to our well-established Football Academy.

Football AcademyThe Football Academy concept was initiated by Cirencester College and Cirencester Town Football Club in 1996.

The vision was to provide full-time football coaching in conjunction with full-time education. This model set the benchmark that numerous colleges have followed and we gained the coveted National Training Award in 1999.

Elevate

Working in partnership with the highly successful Elevate Education, you will take part in two inspiring workshops on how to commence your studies with us to maximise your potential and how to ‘Ace your Exams’ at the end of the year. The young presenters will provide you with practical skills you can use immediately that will support the experience and expertise you are your subject teachers.

Cirencester College Online (CCO)

Cirencester College Online (CCO) is where you will be able to access all of your personal information regarding your progress at college and where our virtual learning courses via Moodle are accessed. CCO is also home to the Careers and Higher Education Micro Site where quality careers guidance information can be accessed including Kudos an online personalised careers matching tool.

Career Insights and Higher Education Guidance

Throughout the year, you will have the opportunity to attend sector relevant insight talks to help inspire you in your next steps. Our Careers and Higher Education Guidance Programme includes our annual Employer and Higher Education Convention with over 50 external exhibitors and targeted events supported by your personal tutor. The Learning Centre and Library support student learning by providing a staffed and supervised independent learning environment. Information and Digital Literacy Skills are delivered via Moodle courses to enhance study skills and expert staff are on hand to advise you on how to get the most out of the resources which include books, DVDs, journals and Electronic materials.

Enterprise

Young Enterprise is your chance to set up and run a real business with other students. One of the best ways to find out what your unique skills are is to get involved. We also run an annual entrepreneurial competition alongside this called ‘The Tenner Challenge’. We also have our own Enterprise Society that works with local businesses to enhance the employability skills of students through a range of activities including networking events and guru speakers [see pages 104-107].

Enrichment

As part of your Study Programme, you will be able to enjoy a wide range of enrichment activities from Duke of Edinburgh to Mentoring School Pupils or Volunteering in the community [see pages 108-115].

Employability Skills You will be encouraged to reflect on your Employability Skills in your one to ones with your tutor and you can record your personal progress on your own individual learning plan. Activities that you are involved in outside of college will also add to your personal portfolio of evidence which will be an invaluable tool for providing you with the confidence to move on with your life when you have completed your studies with us [see pages 98-103].

How we support youMoving from a school to a Sixth Form College is an exciting time. Sometimes this will feel challenging, but we have the expertise to provide outstanding and age appropriate support. While recognising the need to treat students with respect and help to develop independent learning skills, we are still keen to ensure that students have the pastoral support and guidance to help them develop and to achieve their academic and personal goals.

Tutor Groups We will ask you at interview about your ambitions and then to try and match you as closely as we can to a personal tutor who specialises in your chosen area. For example there are tutor groups for students wanting to progress to universities to study a particular degree such as history, to move into the media industry or to progress to an apprenticeship. Tutor groups meet weekly to help prepare you for your chosen paths and to ensure that you know about the huge range of events and opportunities we offer throughout the year.

Personal Tutoring: one-to-one Personal Tutors support students on their journey through College, helping students to settle in and working together to help ensure the best results possible. This is done by tracking progress and supporting students into becoming independent learners. As well as reviewing target grades, tutors will set separate targets linked to their progression, whether that is in higher education or employment and will be a key point of contact for parents.

Target Setting and Academic Monitoring: one-to-one Three times a year, students will formally meet with each of their lecturers on a one-to-one basis to discuss progress. These meetings will provide information on performance

and target setting to maximise grades and to keep students on track. Targets are available for students to see in their own area of the website and parents are encouraged to keep updated on performance via Parent Zone. When all the interviews are complete, students will sit down with their Personal Tutor to discuss overall progress.

Careers Guidance: one-to-one Impartial one-to-one careers guidance appointments are available for all students; the Careers Adviser works individually with a student to develop an action plan. Also, there are a range of careers related activities to help throughout the year, including a large Higher Education and Employment Convention, university visits and weekly Career Insight talks from a range of guest speakers.

Senior Tutor and Progression Tutors

Senior Tutors and Progression Tutors provide another level of one-to-one support for students regarding their progress and well-being. Progression tutors will ensure that students maintain high levels of attendance and any barriers to attendance are addressed and resolved through working with them and parents. Senior Tutors (think year heads at school) will oversee any disciplinary and welfare concerns and will work with tutors to ensure students achieve and succeed.

Parents’ Evenings We believe strongly that parents have a major role to play in supporting students. In addition to Parent Zone we offer two consultation evenings a year where parents, students and lecturers can discuss progress and how to ensure success.

Financial Support Students aged between 16 and 19 years old who think they might struggle with the costs of full-time education can apply for a bursary. Students most in need will be eligible to receive a bursary of £1, 200 a year. This group includes:

Safeguarding The welfare of our students is at the heart of everything we do. Our comprehensive Safeguarding policies and procedures ensure that all staff are fully trained and aware of the correct guidance and referral procedures. We also run training for our whole community in line with the Government’s Prevent Radicalisation programme.

Student Journey Team The Student Journey Team located in the main reception area is a central hub for questions and queries about college processes, including timetables, exams, transport, absence reporting and anything else you might need help with.

Academic Support Academic support is available for students with a recognised medical condition, physical disability or learning difficulty. Specialist staff can discuss this with you at our Open Days and Admissions Interviews and specialist assessments are carried out before the start so that support is available immediately according to student needs. The range of support includes one-to-one teaching, in-class support, drop-in supported learning, specialist equipment and assessment for exam dispensation.

Other Specialist Support Some students encounter difficult personal problems during their time with us which impact on their studies. Our pastoral team will assist students in getting the support they need including providing some mental health and counselling services on site.

STEMScience, Technology, Engineering and Maths“ I am keen to educate students about the multitude of career opportunities available through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

I co-ordinate STEM activity in the college, which includes work with primary and secondary schools, universities and employers. College STEM students volunteer as Ambassadors to work with younger school students at events such as the ‘Big Bang at Cirencester’, and have the opportunity to attend a STEM Enrichment Club. STEM careers advice includes presentations from a large number of local professionals in STEM employment; and through our curriculum many students visit local workplaces to see STEM in action.

Our Engineering Career Ready Academy, which includes representatives from local employers as well as student reps, facilitates guidance and liaison for STEM events, focussing on development of non-academic ‘employability skills’. Students interested in STEM careers receive specific support and guidance. Those wishing to pursue a career in Medicine, Veterinary Science or Dentistry attend additional tutorials and receive targeted support which has proved extremely

successful in raising the number of successful applicants to unprecedented levels.

Through the STEM and Medics/Vets tutor groups, the STEM High Achievers Group and the STEM Enrichment Club, which is

open to all students, young women and men at the College, will have the opportunity to get involved in projects and competitions. They will liaise with people in the broader community in order to develop their skills and learn more about the world of STEM. I hope that through understanding the role of STEM in the community, students will raise their own aspirations to achieve and enter an exciting STEM career of their own.”

High Achievers AcademyStudents from state schools and colleges often find themselves at a disadvantage when applying to the most competitive universities. The programme of support from our High Achievers Academy (HAA) is designed to help address this. It is for all students with good academic records and who would like to try for the more selective universities (e.g. the Russell Group) both in the UK and abroad.

It includes:

Guidance and encouragement to apply including additional University visits in year 1 and opportunities to ask questions of University representatives and some of our many ex-students who have gone to Russell Group Universities.

A briefing for parents to help them to support you through the research and application process.

A specialist Higher Achievers tutor group led by one of our HA team.

A range of extension sessions designed to develop your abilities to think critically and

Development of higher level academic skills including use of journals and referencing. This will lead into opportunities to undertake an Extended Project (EPQ) over the summer and autumn term of Year 2.

Most HAA activities will not take place on Wednesday afternoons so you will still be able to take part in enrichment activities such as STEM club, sports, music and Duke of Edinburgh.

Gifted & Talented‘Gifted and Talented’ is a term used to describe students who may possess talents not necessarily measured in pure academic terms. This could be in the creative arts, sporting skills or those who have the potential to develop significantly beyond what is

expected of them in a variety of areas.

It is our aim to identify and recognise students who have these talents and gifts or have gone above and beyond what is expected of them. We know we have exceptional students here, who have faced and overcome challenges and gone on to succeed, as well as students who have continuously given their free time to help others.

Career Ready links students to the real world of work through a programme of employability workshops, career and market sector lectures, mentoring, workplace visits and internships.

The focus of the Career Ready programme is on raising aspirations, developing career awareness and enabling students to reach their full potential. To deliver this each of our Career Ready programmes is managed through a Board made up of active and enthusiastic employers.

Through the two-year programme students develop their employability skills alongside their academic studies. It helps students with their career planning and the choices they have to make about the future, be that university places, apprenticeships or embarking on a full time career when they leave College.

Our Career Ready programmes are affiliated to the national employability programme also called ‘Career Ready’ and Cirencester College is the only local college to offer this opportunity. In 2014 the College won the Bank Santander Career Academy of the Year Award.

BICCHS (Business in Cirencester College Help and Support) was set up with the purpose of providing students who wish to start their own businesses either now or in the future or who already have a business opportunity to network with established local entrepreneurs and attend guru lectures from people who have ‘been there and done it’.

BICCHS have put on several excellent enterprise and innovation opportunities including:

collaborating with the Royal Agricultural University on a world record attempt for Speed Networking.

Attending an Innovation Forum at Mitsubishi Motors supported by the Cirencester Growth Hub.

Networking with 29 local business people and entrepreneurs to hear their stories and share ideas.

Rebranding and re-launching the College sweet shop as Caddy’s Candy Shop with ‘Made in Chelsea’ star, and owner of Candy Kittens, Jamie Laing.

NCS Summer Challenge 2016In Summer 2016, Cirencester College will be running NCS for young people looking for adventure, fun and achievement.

NCS is a 4 week programme of activities and challenges for 15-17 year olds that will support them to develop the skills and attitudes they need to be more engaged with their communities and become active and responsible young people. It is a challenging and enjoyable opportunity for young people to gain new skills, meet people they would not normally meet, and work together for the benefit of their communities. It supports young people to realise their potential and prepare for adult life.

The young people are given the skills and support to devise, develop and deliver a social action project within the community. In the past the teams have supported various projects including young carers, mental health charities, riding for the disabled and many choose to carry on their support once the NCS programme is complete. Feedback from young people who have participated in NCS summer events tells a fantastic story.

In 2015/2016 there will be up to 128,000 places available across England (over 60 places in Cirencester and the surrounding area) and the programme will be open to many more young people in future years.

Why did you sign up for the NCS programme?

I wanted to make new friends ready before starting college at the end of the summer, I wanted to have a summer of adventure and fun as a break after my GCSE’s but also to make a difference and have something extra to put on to my CV.

What did you enjoy most about the programme?

I had such an amazing time sailing, canoeing, paddle boarding and rock climbing in the day, campfires and playing rounders in the evening. I made such great friends and have memories that I know I will smile at for many years to come.

How have you stayed involved with NCS since the programme?

I was nominated to be the Cirencester representative for the NCS Graduate Youth Board, which means I help plan the future of NCS. I have also applied to volunteer on the next years NCS as a volunteer leader.

What lessons did you learn from NCS about yourself and what would you say to a student thinking about joining the NCS programme?

I have grown in confidence and leadership skills, and have developed my team work and social skills. I have learnt that if I put myself out there more, so many opportunities are available to me and that something as simple as saying hello could spark a friendship.

I would say, do it! You won’t regret it! NCS will be an adventure from start to finish, you will make loads of new friends. You will have a fun filled summer and pick some new skills up along the way! It will be one of the best summers of your life!
