LEADERSHIP ACADEMY CAPSTONEPROJECT PRESENTATIONS

MONDAY, AUGUST 159:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. :: 2 CEUs (must attend both) :: HIGHLAND A

• DEVELOPING THE BEST OF THE BEST: FUNERAL DIRECTOR RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

Presented by: KENDRA HARRIS-CONSTANT, MARTY HUGHES and TYLER KENTAre mortuary schools failing to prepare students for the “real world” of funeral service? Funeral home owners often report difficulty in hiring people, and finding employees with the right skills. Funeral director residents often report spending their time doing “odd jobs” rather than funeral work. Mortuary students often notice less than half of their classmates from the 1st semester make it to graduation. Where is the breakdown happening? This session will share our research results and provide recommendations for how to fill the gap.

• THE FUTURE OF FUNERAL SERVICE: THE POWER OF CONNECTION

Presented by: NICOLE LARUE and JULIA O’BRIENThe way we connect with our colleagues and friends has changed. How must our approach evolve to ensure that funeral service professionals continue to have a network of support? If local associations are to continue to exist, we must make significant shifts in how we engage the next generation of leaders - through programs, events and other outreach. This session will share the findings of our recent research to investigate how people connect today.

Page 7: 2016 NYSFDA · • SOCIAL MEDIA AND DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS FOR FUNERAL DIRECTORS Presented by Sean Conboy Lilac Ballroom • UNDERSTANDING NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION Presented by Jan Latiolais

MONDAY, AUGUST 15 (continued)

The following one-hour programs are available at 11:15 a.m., or 12:30 p.m.

• CREMATION . . . YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW 1 CEU

Presented by MIKE NICODEMUS

LILAC BALLROOM — Cremation isn’t new and it’s not a fad. It’s here to stay. But are you willing to make the changes needed to survive into the future? This program will show how cremation has evolved over the years and what funeral directors need to do to make sure they maintain, and increase market share in their community. This statistical program will take you through the past and present issues of cremation, and what three things are a must for you to look at to determine if you are connecting with cremation families, and why these families would choose you over your competitor. This thought provoking program goes by quickly and will point out what changes you need to make that create opportunity with the families you serve.

• COMMUNITY HEALING AFTER A SUICIDE LOSS 1 CEU

Presented by MARIANNE REID SCHROM, CAE

HIGHLAND B — Funeral directors are on the front lines of a family’s grief following a death by suicide. As such, they have an amazing opportunity to support the family and reduce the shame and stigma often associated with suicide. Funeral directors can play a critical role in recognizing the impact on the family and community, along with connecting the immediate family/survivors of suicide loss with resources, support, and guidance for memorial and funeral services.

• GOT ETHICS? I’VE BEEN DYING TO TELL YOU 2 CEUs

Presented by CHUCK GALLAGHER

HIGHLAND B — From the year I was born, 1957, until now, the funeral service profession and death care industry has changed in ways that funeral service professionals would never have dreamed of. At that time, there was no Walmart or Costco selling caskets, and cremation was in its infancy. Today, however, with advances happening more quickly than many can keep up with, we face a rapidly changing market and the guarantee of business disruption. “I’ve Just Been Dying to Tell You” is an entertaining, educational and provocative presentation that will open your eyes to the ever-changing landscape of the future for funerals or celebrations of life.

The goal of this timely seminar will educate funeral directors on ways they can be better prepared for any mass fatality situation. Learn more about security measures funeral directors should consider moving forward to protect their businesses and the families they serve.

• BUSINESS SUCCESSION AND ESTATE PLANNING 2 CEUs

Presented by MACKENZIE MONACO, MICHAEL CATALFIMO and STEVE FERRARO

HIGHLAND C — Have you made plans for the succession of your business and the distribution of your estate? Learn how to discuss your wishes with your family members and business partners, and how to make effective plans to accomplish your goals. The program will also help you to identify and assemble the right team of professionals to guide you through the planning process and create the documents needed to make your plan legal and viable. Topics covered will include: understanding why you should have business succession and estate plans in place; knowing how to develop successful plans; determining what YOU want; maximizing business value; developing the next generation and your legacy; holding meetings with family members and business partners; choosing and working with professionals; understanding common planning issues and techniques; and converting ownership into personal financial freedom and peace of mind.

It documents each step taken to overcome the injuries. These cases are presented with the permission of the families. The second hour will feature a live demonstration on facial reconstruction using commonly available products on RATH (restorative art teaching heads) which are life size heads with matching traumatic injuries. In addition, new Simskin heads, which are medical realistic surgical training models are utilized.

The following two-hour program will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Presented by T. SCOTT GILLIGAN

LILAC BALLROOM — Funeral directors often find themselves in the middle of family disputes over exactly who has the legal right and responsibility (“control”) to arrange for a loved one’s final disposition. In addition, because of their specialized knowledge, funeral directors often have the opportunity to “educate” lawyers and other “experts” in the intricacies of New York State’s preneed funeral law.
