Social Entrepreneurship for Service Learning and

Student-Led Innovation

An emerging trend among U.S. universities has been a growing interest in the field of social

entrepreneurship. Unofficially defined as the use of business tools and techniques to address

social problems, social entrepreneurship is inspiring students to effect social change through

a compassionate version of capitalism. By emphasizing interdisciplinary knowledge and

practical solutions, social entrepreneurship offers educators the opportunity to challenge

students to collaboratively take action on social problems they choose to confront. This

presentation will introduce the concept of social entrepreneurship and provide a brief

overview of how it can encourage students to pursue their own paths towards social

innovation. Several case studies of the social entrepreneurship process will be highlighted as

a means towards implementing student-centric solutions to pressing social and environmental

concerns, including the speaker’s experiences with his own social entrepreneurship

project. The presentation will conclude with a call for educators to motivate a new

generation of change agents to reshape their world through social entrepreneurship.

Dr. Keith H. Sakuda is an assistant professor of management at the University of Hawaii

West Oahu. His research interests include cross-cultural management, intercultural relations,

and social entrepreneurship. He is also a former president of the Western Casewriters

Association. His industry experience includes opinion leader marketing, social

entrepreneurship, and consulting for sustainability projects in Hawaii, Tahiti, China, and

Japan. His current project is co-founding Ho‘oulu Pacific, a social enterprise promoting food

sovereignty in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. Dr. Sakuda has a B.A. in Economics and

Page 18: 201507-Hong Kong Conference Program

16

Environmental Science Management from Claremont McKenna College and an M.B.A and

Ph.D. in International Management from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Ho‘oulu Pacific’s mission is to improve self-sufficiency and holistic health in the Pacific

Islands through innovations in aquaponics and coordinated distributed agriculture. It believes

that an affordable, reliable supply of nutritious food is the foundation for all healthy

communities. Ho‘oulu Pacific has received numerous social entrepreneurship awards and has

been featured by media outlets such as Fast Company, the Guardian, National Geographic,

GreenBiz.com, The Magazine, and Undercurrent News.

Cyber Security Challenges in the 21st Century

Every day we hear about cyber security attacks on commercial businesses, private companies,

celebrity’s private emails misused and Facebook accounts being hacked. Who would have

thought back twenty years ago, that everyday tools such as Internet Applications via networks

and smart phones, would be subjected to constant assaults by organizations and people just

because they want to see how vulnerable a system or program is or if it can be penetrated and

exploited? No country is or industry is safe from cyber threat and the damages it can cause.

We face these common dilemma’s globally on cyber security and the protection of our

information and networks. What methods can we use to prevent future violation of private

and sensitive public data? Are the current processes in place sufficient protection? Who is

ultimately responsible for breaches in a business or corporation infrastructure? How

vulnerable are you at your home or workplace? The main questions that should be asked is

how often cyber awareness training being conducted at the overall organizational level and is

information security in general being looked at, documented, and tracked.

This presentation will examine the security challenges that we have had, since the

Millennium Bug (Y2K) ushered in our new century, of cyber security, evaluates the steps and

measure we can take as a global community. Additionally, we will explore what we can do

to protect our information and minimize data breaches.

Civilian Government worker. His current positions are Information Assurance Engineer and
