Storm from Finger Lime Farm Richmond to Collins Gap Photo: Aileen Elliott

Club NewsFrom the editor Welcome to the June newsletter.A word about the fantastic photo you see above. AileenElliott captured the view on a walk last year. This photois actually just part of a larger panorama. The good news is you could soon own a copy. Aileen has arranged professional mounting and framing of the full panorama which will form part of the raffle prize at Pilgrimage. Just another good reason to attend...We are a bit light on for walk reports this month but that's ok. It shows that people are very busy walking or helping to prepare for Pilgrimage. In lieu of a report I'vematched a Henry Lawson poem with a few scenes I enjoyed in the Blue Mountains last year. Enjoy your reading! Michael HPilgrimage UpdateA reminder that QBW is hosting Pilgrimage 2015 on 14-16 August at Kalbar Showgrounds.Cost is $50.00 if paid before 31 July. ($55.00 after)Registration Forms can be downloaded from the website. Pay by cheque or electronically.A map of the showgrounds is on the web.The Pilgrimage website has been updated at https://sites.google.com/site/qldbwc/pilgrimage-2015.There will be at least a dozen walks on the Saturday, ranging from very easy to quite hard. The really big news is that we have booked a band (Band O' Coots) for the Saturday night bush dance, so you can all stop looking for one now. But keep on finding ways to help it's all greatly appreciated.

The Pilgrimage committee is asking for attendees to please bring a plate of savoury food for the Saturday evening supper. Gluten free options are helpful too. Also needed are soup ladles, large cooking pots eg 10 litres, and a cold water container approx 20 litres with atap. Contact Mary if you can locate these for her.Richard is doing a round of bushwalking clubs giving a brief presentation on the Pilgrimage. He is being warmly received and the talks are very helpful for prospective attendees.Walks Planning 31 MayAttendees at the walks planning meeting enjoyed a delightful alfresco wining and dining experience in a garden setting with the ambience of candlelight. Thank you Sandy for hosting. Many more walks are now booked in. Check the calendar.

  • Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT)The 160km long Brisbane Valley Rail Trail follows the line of the old railway line from Yarraman to Wulkuraka. The trail can be used by hikers, bikers, or horse riders. When completed it is claimed it will be the longest rail trail in Australia and New Zealand. However there are two important sections that need to be developed to complete the walk. One of those is now being done. The Queensland Government recently advised that works started on 11 May to improve the conditions of the trail between Diamantina Street at Wulkuraka and Lloyds Road near Wanora. These works are expected to be finalised by the end of June 2015.That means it will be possible to access the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail directly from Ipswich. Past Walks Paddleboard/walk Burleigh Head NP 16 May SOCOn Saturday 16 May 2015, 7 of us brave people braved the elements and headed off to Tallebudgera Creek to try our skills on paddleboards. We hired the boards from a lovely lady called Leanne. Hire cost $20 for an hour and she gave us a detailed lesson on how to use the paddle and the board, but not how not to fall off which most of us did, but that just added to the experience especially laughing at someone else's misfortune!

After the hour was up and photos taken we got changed and walked across Burleigh Head National Park to find somewhere to eat. It wasn't the best place, but the coffee was good and after shopping and sightseeing we walked back over Burleigh Head and then journeyed home.

It was a great day out and I would probably put it on again when the weather warms up. Thanks to Sandy, Michael, Yvette, Matthew, Aileen, and Bobbie for coming.

The Blue MountainsAbove the ashes straight and tall,

Through ferns with moisture dripping, I climb beneath the sandstone wall,

    My feet on mosses slipping.

Like ramparts round the valley's edge The tinted cliffs are standing,

With many a broken wall and ledge, And many a rocky landing.

And round about their rugged feet Deep ferny dells are hidden

In shadowed depths, whence dust and heat Are banished and forbidden.

The stream that, crooning to itself, Comes down a tireless rover,

Flows calmly to the rocky shelf, And there leaps bravely over.

Now pouring down, now lost in spray When mountain breezes sally,

The water strikes the rock midway, And leaps into the valley.

Now in the west the colours change, The blue with crimson blending; Behind the far Dividing Range,

The sun is fast descending. And mellowed day comes o'er the place,

And softens ragged edges; The rising moon's great placid face

Looks gravely o'er the ledges. Henry Lawson
