THIS SUMMER, THE auctions and dealer shows in London look tobe particularly diverse and engaging for collectors and curators offine paintings.

Thomas Agnew’s Ltd will open their new St James’s premises withthe exhibition Portraiture through the ages. Among the canvases(including some loans) will be Don Balthasar Carlos on Horseback byJohn Singer Sargent (1856–1925) after the Prado’s magnificentpainting by Diego Velázquez (1599–1660). Rafael Valls Ltd (withTomasso Brothers Fine Art) will stage A Grand Menagerie: AnimalsDepicted by Master Painters and Sculptors, which will include TwoPumas in a landscape by the Liverpool artist William Huggins(1820–84). Showing mainly Italian paintings and drawings, visitingdealer Maurizio Nobile will be selling The Holy Family with St Johnthe Baptist by Gaetano Gandolfi (1734–1802).

An ambitious themed exhibition, Napoleon: From Antiquity toEmpire, will take place at Robilant + Voena, coinciding with the200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. Works such as thePortrait of the Emperor Napoleon in coronation robes by the studio ofFrançois Pascal Simon, Baron Gérard (1770–1837) projectNapoleon’s desire for civilisation, power and grandeur.

Christie’s will offer a selection of Old Masters from the Alfred BeitFoundation, including two works on panel by Peter Paul Rubens(1577–1640): Head of a bearded man and Venus supplicating Jupiter. Alsoon offer will be a rare religious scene by Adriaen van Ostade(1610–85) and a Venetian view by Francesco Guardi (1712–93).Sotheby’s will offer many fine paintings including La bocca della verità(The jaws of truth) by Lucas Cranach The Elder (1472–1553).

COLLECTORS AND AFICIONADOS of drawings will once more dis-cover a diverse medley of works at the dealer shows and auctions inJuly. The mixed stock and themed hangings will overwhelminglyrepresent British and European schools from the sixteenth to thetwentieth-century.

Stephen Ongpin Fine Art has assembled some sixty Italian draw-ings, including works by Ridolfo Ghirlandaio (1483–1561),Salvator Rosa (1615–73) and the Futurist Giacomo Balla(1871–1958). British drawings and watercolours will be well repre-sented by artists such as Thomas Gainsborough (1727–88), PeterDe Wint (1784–1849), Thomas Rowlandson (1756–1829) andJames Ward (1769–1859). Martyn Gregory will be offering thelarge watercolour Waterfall, Betws-y-Coed by David Cox (1873–59)and Lowell Libson Ltd will show Sunset by James Ward. DidierAaron Ltd will show predominantly French drawings, including afigure drawing in black chalk, Study for a Satyr, by the painter andprintmaker Michel Dorigny (1617–63). Later French works willbe available with Stoppenbach and Delestre Ltd, where sheets byPaul Cesar Helleu (1859–1927), Paul Signac (1863–1935) andRaoul Dufy (1877–1953) will be on view.

The richly patinatedÉcorché Horse by Fracesco Righetti (1749–1819) is a fine exampleof both anatomical science and artistic endeavour. Other worksdate from the Renaissance and Classical Antiquity.

Daniel Katz Gallery will loosely unify a group of outstandingworks under the banner From the Salon. Works formerly shown atthe Paris Salon, Royal Academy, London, and the VeniceBiennale will include examples by Joseph Chinard (1756–1813),Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) and George Frederick Watts(1817–1904). This year several figures from mythology will makean appearance at a number of showings. With Trinity Fine Art willbe a late Renaissance bronze Farnese Hercules from Italy; KneelingSatyr, a finely rendered bronze by Severo da Ravenna (1465–1538)will be shown at Benjamin Proust Fine Art; and a white marbleVenus by Vincenzo Vitagliano (active 1740) will be available atBrun Fine Art.

the sword), who were both martyred for refusing to marry.

They were painted in around 1866 and were originally designs forstained glass, now in All Saints Church, Cambridge.
