2015 AMBA Wage and Benefits Report ii
Report Layout Company representatives participating in the 2015 Wage and Benefits survey process provided data via an online input questionnaire over a period of six weeks. It must be understood that no wage or salary question was made mandatory, so of the 163 companies participating in this report, no one job title or question contains responses from all survey participants. The 2015 report analyzes the Starting Rate, the High Rate, and Average Rate of Pay for each job classification: Low (Indicates the lowest rate reported by survey respondents in a specific category) High (Indicates the highest rate reported by survey respondents in a specific category) Average (Total of reported rates over number of companies reporting rates) Median (Middle point of the respondent data ranked from least to greatest) When viewing the report, the user is recommended to identify his corresponding annual sales revenue range in millions of dollars and first use the Median Data for that range for comparison purposes. (Information located in the Average (Ave) columns may be useful in cases where the overall difference between the low and high data values possessed little deviation, and the total number of employees is large.) In cases where the employee population size for a sales revenue range is small, report users are recommended to use the highlighted “Total” row at the bottom of each table as these data points are aggregate amounts combining all respondents for each job classification. Users of this survey also are strongly encouraged to closely examine “Years of Service” when viewing Average Rate of Pay as the experience level documented has a strong, correlated impact on the data contained in this column. Report Disclaimer First Resource, Inc. and the American Mold Builders Association (AMBA) have exercised professional care and diligence in preparing this report. However, because the data used in this report comes from third-party sources and representatives from First Resource, Inc. and AMBA have not independently verified, validated, or audited any such data, First Resource, Inc. and AMBA make no representations or warranties with respect to the accuracy of the information contained in this report. First Resource, Inc. and AMBA shall not be liable to any client, manufacturing or business company executive, or any other person or entity for inaccuracy or inauthenticity of the information contained in this report for any errors or omissions in its content, regardless of the cause of such inaccuracy, inauthenticity, error or omission. Executive Summary
2015 AMBA Wage and Benefits Report iv
Executive Summary AMBA’s 2015 Wage and Benefits report represents the largest compensation study focused on the United States moldmaking industry sector. AMBA’s Wage and Benefits Report contains comprehensive analysis on 50 job classifications from mold manufacturing-related firms who serve a variety of end-use markets. These job classifications represent nearly 4,805 hourly and salaried employees located across America; a 25.3% increase from 2014’s report. The 2015 Wage and Benefits Report represents inputs from 163 different mold building companies scattered across 28 states across the US. Over 57% of the survey respondents represented companies with sales revenue of less than $5.0M while companies with sales levels ranging from $5.0M - $15.0M comprised 28.2% of the population with companies in excess of $15.0M representing 14.5%.
The employment outlook for 2015 is very optimistic as slightly over seven in ten respondents anticipate expanding their employment base while 7% are not planning any new hires for the next 12 months. The need to locate and find skilled people to fill technical positions far outweighed the need to fill both administrative and leadership positions. Although the moldmaking sector continues to experience cost pressures,
the tactical use of production supervisors remains unchanged as the majority, or nearly 50% of the respondents to this year’s survey, assign a supervisor to every ten employees; 29% use a 1:20 ratio of employees to supervisors; and 5% a 1:30 ratio. (Over 14% have actually eliminated production supervisors.) As initiatives are underway in nearly every manufacturing industry to attract youth into their respective sectors, the moldmaking industry relies on the wisdom of long-term employees as 65% of the marketplace is represented by those 41 years of age and older. Since the future of the mold manufacturing industry relies on new comers embracing machine trades, startling is the fact that the replacement workforce, those under 30 years of age, represents 17% while another 17% of the workforce is represented by those between the ages of 31-40. By examining the age demographics found in the 2006, 2011 and 2015 AMBA studies, an unmistakable trend reveals shrinkage of the workforce under the age of 50 and expansion of the workforce above 50. More comprehensive details on age demographics in the moldmaking industry are contained in this report.
