An Update from Loneliness, a child protected and nourished by your gifts to Temwani

PaKachele Primary School Student - Grade 5

Loneliness writes, “My grandmother depends on selling vegetables for livelihood and that makes life very difficult

because sometimes she sells very little then we have no food at home. Pakachele School is helping me a lot because … they

provide us with books to write in, pens, pencils, everything that I need for school. They give me food to eat and some clothes. I now look better than before I came ... I have learnt to be a good child

... and a better person in the future. ”

2

I first met a shy girl named Loneliness in 2011. I walked with her down the dirt path that led from PaKachele School to her grandmother’s cobbled-together block home. Her grandmother labored to care for her and many of her cousins. Loneliness had never met her father and struggled with the domestic tasks and childcare duties that regularly made her late for school. A recent update, written in her own words, shows a determined 13 year-old survivor who has overcome the challenges reflected in her own sad name.

Loneliness’ story shares similar themes with other PaKachele School students, who are almost all either orphans and/or living on less than $1/day).

Temwani continues to support PaKachele School because of its record of success. With your heartfelt donation, join hands with the Temwani Children’s Foundation to keep the important safety net of this loving school open for 2016!

8% of deaths of children under 5, and 11% of all deaths in Zambia are due to inadequate access to safe water and sanitation.1

In rural neighborhoods, families must often walk long distances to retrieve water, and this responsibility is mostly left to women, young girls and children.2

A 7th grade student writes that before attending PaKachele School, “I was not doing well in class. I did not even know how to read when I reached Grade 5.” Now after 3 years at PaKachele, she loves learning and especially the teachers as they under-stand her challenges. She finishes, “Now I really want to continue with my education.”

“[At home I must] fetch water from the community borehole which is some distance from our house. So I am always late for school, every day. But thank God, at Pakachele School

they do not send children away even if they are late to report.” – Ester, Grade 7

Besides education and meals, PaKachele provides psychological and social care. The school takes many paths to help students find strength and resilience in the midst of extreme poverty, and to cope with the death of parents, a reality for 1/3 of its students.

Special workshops, camps and onsite counseling sessions help young children deal with loss which also comes in the form of separation from siblings, and lack of a stable home life.

The Temwani Children’s Foundation has connected with another amazing school in Lusaka, Zambia that is one of the few area facilities dedicated to children with physical and mental disabilities.

Children with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, epilepsy, spinal, hearing and vision impairments are all supported by Little Assisi. In the past, Temwani has provided teacher training, tactile story books, and school supplies.

“Being at Pakachele School has really helped me. It has changed my life. Before I was very rude and used to fight a lot. [The school’s] counseling sessions and

camps … have helped me to cope with my many challenges. I now have respect for other people and I can manage my anger.”

Imagine a 10 year old who has never traveled more than a few miles from home, played in a fountain, or visited a zoo? Field Trips allow the children living in slums to see beyond their neighborhoods, visit animals (zebras, lions, giraffe and elephants actually live in Zambia!), play in waterparks, view waterfalls and live in a world where they are free to dream. $2000

With almost 240 students in 2015, the school’s current bus is too small for the number of children that need transportation. On top of that, vehicle maintenance and repairs are becoming costly for this aging bus. Help Temwani keep the wheels going round with a safe ride for the children! $30,000

Temwani Children’s Foundation is committed to supporting PaKachele School and the 240 children who depend on it for education, food, counseling, love and protection. The school’s reach goes far beyond the children themselves, to touch 1,500 staff, families and members of the community.

With a new afterschool Carpentry Program, workshops in child abuse and human trafficking prevention, and future plans for better playgrounds, after school clubs, and teacher trainings, there is a bright future ahead! The current level of donations enable Temwani to fund only half of the school’s needs each year, with little guarantee of meeting future needs. Your generous gift will keep the doors to the school open! $50,000
